Wednesday, May 14 - Host and American Family Farmer, Doug Stephan www.eastleighfarm.com shares the news affecting small farmers in America, including a focus on farm real estate selling very well right now amongst a scarcity of land happening around the country and which states have the most options, the potential for agriculture to be greenhouse gas negative, and farmers experiencing increased allergies. Then, Doug introduces us to Corrinna Sammons, owner of Dragonfly Farm in Franklinton, NC. Dragonfly Farm is known for their hatchlings and hatching eggs, as well as their tips and recommendations for anyone just getting started with their own flock. At Dragonfly Farm, they have chosen breeds that get along well in mixed flocks, and give variety in both egg color, and feather color. They have tried many other breeds, but have kept only those breeds that seem to outshine the others. Plus, they are very particular about their roosters, only keeping the most beautiful/correct grow outs, with the most gentle dispositions. They do not keep/breed any rooster that has shown aggression to them, their youngest daughter, or their hens. Aggression in roosters typically passes to their offspring, and no one should have to deal with a nasty rooster. Dragonfly Farm undergoes testing every 6 months by the state for their NPIP-ai certification. You can learn more on DragonflyFarmNC.com. Lastly, Farmer Doug shares news on food and beverages that are loaded with microplastics — sea salt, shrimp and oysters, bottled water, rice, tea and more. In August, a game in December at home against the Washington Commanders and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels was marked as a sure victory for the New Orleans Saints. My, how 4 months can change things, as the home team currently stands as a 7½-point underdog. That is the lead topic on Wednesday's Dattitude Podcast (Ep. 321) presented by Evangeline Securities, as host Jim Derry asks if the Commanders are a model franchise to look to when thinking about the future – or maybe just take pieces from multiple teams. Also, Jim talks to former Saints safety Roman Harper and asks how the team can back to respectability. Lastly, Franklinton football coach Nick Saltaformaggio again joins the show to discuss his team playing in an LHSAA state title game on Friday, and Gabe Henderson talks about the potential of legendary coach Bill Belichick going to the college ranks at North Carolina.
Mark Somerson of Columbus Business First has the latest local business news including the passing of the co-founder of Tommy's Diner in Franklinton
We made up a new word on Wednesday, and it seems pretty simple. So we ask our viewers and listeners where the New Orleans Saints rank in the NFL's “lowerarchy?” There are plenty of teams in worse shape than us, right? That is the lead topic on Wednesday's Dattitude Podcast (Ep. 317) presented by Evangeline Securities, as host Jim Derry begins to look ahead to the Saints facing one of those “lower” teams in the New York Giants. Derek Carr or Drew Lock? Alvin Kamara or Tyrone Tracy? Brian Daboll or whoever the next coach of the Saints will be? You get the picture. Also, Jim is talking about Friday's LHSAA football semifinals, as this weekend's winners are headed to the Caesars Superdome for the state championship games next week. One of the 16 coaches joins us, as Franklinton's Nick Saltaformaggio is here to discuss his Demons, as well as what it's like to be in the semis with a third different school in 11 years. Jim and Salt also look at the other games in the semis that involve local schools.

"As we forgive those who trespass against us," are the words Jesus shares in the Our Father prayer, and yet these words become hard to practice when serious offenses are committed. How do you forgive someone if you don't condone the act? How do you show love when you feel grief and sorrow? For Rachel Muha forgiveness was not a feeling, or an option. It was an act of love and something she knew without any hesitation. In this episode, Andrea talks with Rachel about the power of forgiveness and what it really means when we forgive. In May, 1999 a terrible tragedy hit the Muha Family. Her son Brian, who was 18 years old, was murdered in cold blood. Rachel prayed these words and forgave Nathan Herring and Terrell Yarbrough, the two young boys who killed Brian. But what's even more remarkable is the fact that her family forgave too... because she forgave. Later that year, Rachel and her extended family started The Brian Muha Memorial Foundation in memory of her son. The Foundation's mission is to raise scholarship funds for inner city children to attend excellent schools, in the same neighborhood where Brian was murdered. In 2005 The Brian Muha Foundation started the Run The Race Club, an after school center for inner city children and young adults on Columbus' west side. That has grown into an outreach to all families in the Hilltop and Franklinton area, two of the most violent neighborhoods in Columbus. The Foundation has a food pantry, clothes and appliances distribution, a Make A House A Home program, a Farm to take the children to, sports, parties, holiday give-aways and more. In 2020 The Brian Muha Foundation started a small private school called The Day School for inner city children. All of this is an effort to help young people and their families know the love of God and love of others and to know they are capable of so much more than what they see in their neighborhoods, schools and homes. If you'd like to connect with Rachel or see how her organization helps others you can visit her website at www.brianmuhafoundation.org Read about Rachel and Brian's story in Legacy of Mercy Follow Andrea and Jennifer on Instagram or Facebook or connect with them our the website at www.mourningglorypodcast.com

Shared experience enhances our sense of space. Over the summer, I had the opportunity to attend the annual Franklinton Board of Trade Gala, held at COSI. That night's keynote speaker was the well-known Central Ohio journalist, legislator, and author Michael Curtin. His remarks that evening struck a chord with me, and I asked him to recite them again here for Confluence Cast listeners. Mike's speech touches on the impact Franklinton had on him, the local figures who ascended in their careers despite humble beginnings, and the role that Franklinton has had in molding the broader Columbus community. I hope this episode instills in listeners what it did for me: A greater sense of the city's rich history and our opportunity to find a place in that history. Developing a Dynamic Downtown Series If it's been more than a year since you last visited the Franklinton section of Columbus, just west of downtown, you're in for a shock. Longtime vacant lots and boarded-up houses are gone, replaced by trendy new apartment buildings that look like they've been plucked from a hip neighborhood in Copenhagen. The new developments are more than just places for urbanites to live: they're complete destinations, stocked with brewpubs, restaurants, coffee shops, and art installations. The living arrangement's often modern too, with “co-living” apartments now becoming more common: in these “adult dorms,” bedrooms are private, but spaces like living rooms and kitchens are shared for maximum socialization and minimal rent. No developer in Columbus has been closer to the epicenter of Franklinton's complete reinvention than visionary Brett Kaufman. His 15-acre Gravity project, “the world's largest conscious community,” is now almost a city-within-a-city and features apartments, offices, and coming soon – an adult “experience park” featuring pickleball courts, an ice rink (in the winter), and space for food trucks. Columbus Business First's Bonnie Meibers sits down with Brett Kaufman for an-in-depth conversation on his vision for Columbus and the city's unrealized potential as a modern, sustainable, and equitable city. The speakers are: Brett Kaufman, Founder, Kaufman Development With host Bonnie Meibers, Commercial Real Estate Reporter, Columbus Business First Greg Davies, CEO of Columbus Downtown Development Corporation, provided closing remarks. This forum is part of CMC's ongoing Developing a Dynamic Downtown series, presented by the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation and Capitol South and sponsored by Thompson Hine. This forum was also sponsored by REALM and supported by The Ellis. The livestream was presented by The Center for Human Kindness at The Columbus Foundation and by The Columbus Dispatch. This forum was recorded before a live audience in Columbus, Ohio on September 13, 2023.

Today's guest on the Gravity Podcast is Joshua Clark, an award-winning Columbus-based filmmaker. His production company is located in Franklinton, at the Idea Foundry, placing his inspiring creative endeavors squarely in the Gravity universe; it was only a matter of time before we crossed paths and I'm so glad that we did.He shares his vivid story of growing up in Pittsburgh in the view of violence and volatility, his own path into the same kinds of destructive patterns as a youth, reaching rock bottom with a suicide attempt, and how therapy helped him ultimately discover filmmaking as an outlet for positive impact. His voice is authentic and measured as we discuss the heavy burdens he's uncovered and overcome through emotional explorations with his family back home – a growth and personal development he's captured on film for the Cinema Columbus Film Festival, titled: Cycle Breakers. It certainly sounds like Joshua has put together a truly special behind-the-scenes piece of American life and I'm looking forward to seeing the end result. Joshua's story has a different frequency to it than most we hear on this podcast. Its vivid colors are important to include in the rainbow of experience that we call life. Rasheedah Crawly is an Entrepreneur and the Owner of Franklinton Market & Luxe Skincare. This week is such a fun and insightful episode as I sit and get to know Rasheedah and all that she does and wants to do right here in Columbus, OH. A few months ago I saw news that a "market" was coming to Franklinton, which is the area this podcast's studio currently resides in. While that doesn't sound like a big deal, what it meant was I could go grab drinks and snacks right across the street anytime and didn't have to drive a few miles for it anymore! So, you'll hear me chat with Rasheedah about how wonderful that is, but of course we dive into how the Market came to be out of necessity not just for people in the area, but it all started from Rasheedah herself wishing it existed! We talk about her background in marketing, the whole process of how her and her business partner created the Market, her goals with it, the growth of the city of Columbus, what's preventing certain growth, what prevents us as indivuduals from growing in general and how to get past that, starting her skincare brand 'Luxe' & lots more! We welcome Jordan Helman as our guest on the podcast, to celebrate the official opening of High Bank Distillery Co.'s new Gahanna/New Albany (OH) location on 5/18/22! Intentional is the word that comes to mind when referring to High Bank Distillery and its growth process in Columbus, and it also explains the core beliefs of two men whose friendship evolved and resulted in this successful distillery and restaurant. Jordan Helman and Adam Hines believe in purpose, and as the original founders of High Bank, they admit that every step of their journey has been well thought out and built on an uncompromised approach. The High Bank story starts with Jordan and Adam's friendship and joint business dealings between Adam's business, States of Design, and Jordan's business, Zest Juice Co. As they began talking about a combined, new business venture featuring whiskey, two new partners were added to the “founding fathers” – Calvin Jones and Jeff Ireland. The four founders were all Columbus residents and very familiar with the current offerings of the local beer and whiskey scene. The founders were confident that there would be room for their new spirits in the market, so they dedicated their skills to designing a distillery and restaurant that would focus on each ingredient for each specialty that was served, whether alcohol or food. They believed this would set them apart and this intentional approach would end up leading to the inspiration for their name – High Bank! According to their website, “When Ohio forged plans for the state capital, the area is known as Franklinton, was a primary consideration due to its close proximity to the water and pre-existing infrastructure. After much consideration, they concluded the risk of flooding was too great. On February 14th, 1812, the state legislature accepted plans to lay out the capital, now known as Columbus, on the High Bank, opposite Franklinton, at the fork of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers. We take the same uncompromised approach when selecting each ingredient to create every plate of food, crafted cocktail, and bottle of High Bank spirits.” Much like the cautious planning of Columbus' founding fathers, these gentlemen have been committed to slow, intentional and organic growth. Their ultimate goal is to do this while being devoted to community partnerships from purchasing local coffee to sourcing Amish produce. They are also proud to serve beer options from Columbus neighborhood breweries that additionally offer a circle of support that has continual returns - breweries are some of their best accounts to buy from and sell to. With a business model that relies on the safety of the “High Bank” through thoughtful and purposeful actions, there is potential for growth and expansion, but again, with an intentional pace. The discovery process began in 2014, they opened the distillery/restaurant in 2018, and they are just this year expanding to a second location in Gahanna after a very successful original location in Grandview fulfilled their expectations. The Gahanna location is slated to open in May. According to Jordan, “We have so much growth left in the state of Oho, and our goal is to become the most well-known distillery in the state and to put Ohio on the map from a distillery standpoint.” In 2021, they were voted home of the best-blended whiskey in America by the San Francisco World Spirits Corporation. The restaurant was also awarded the Best Creative Cocktails in Columbus by 614 Columbest for three years running. With product in 180 of Ohio's 480 liquor stores, they feel that some of their recent awards will spur continued growth including brand recognition. Heartland was proud to partner with High Bank recently to guide them through their expansion. “We wanted to get with a smaller bank that valued our business more and believed our story because we want to grow. We need a partner who believes in what we are doing as a business and can see not just the pa...
Jim Sweeney became Executive Director of the Franklinton Development Association Community Development Corporation in 2002. While in that role for 14 years, Jim led the effort to revitalize Franklinton through the creation of over 150 affordable housing units, various community-building activities including founding the Franklinton arts district, and aggressive neighborhood advocacies on all levels. Jim moved Franklinton, AKA “the bottoms,” to the center of the discussion about central Ohio development. He built consensus around the revitalization of east Franklinton as an arts destination, an initiative that gained the support of city hall and now has begun the path to reality. The fifth in line of five kids, Jim grew up fast to keep up with his siblings. What caught his attention as a kid was building – he'd find himself in the woods, taking pieces of lumber out of people's yards and building forts. This fascination with building wouldn't return until later in his life when he turned his attention to his old neighborhood and what could happen there with some conscious revitalization. Jim grew up in two worlds: The suburban lifestyle of Columbus and the dense city life of Brooklyn. He knew the benefits of both, and he became deeply attuned to the strengths of each place – more importantly, how he could utilize those strengths in urban planning. This conversation begs us to take a look at forgotten spaces and how we can truly have the best of both worlds. What Brett asks: [01:48] Can you tell us about your life growing up? [10:22] What kind of person were you in grade school? [20:16] What was it like going to college in Athens? [28:22] What was it about city planning that got you interested? [32:08] How did your studies start to shape you moving forward? [36:44] What inspired you to build and plan your own neighborhood? [42:24] Where did your vision for Franklinton come from? What was the beginning of that? [55:12] How are things in Franklinton and where are they going in the future? Matt and Kristen (and the gang) are live in Franklinton, NC at the home of our customer Jimmy. It's been over two years since Jimmy got his 6'x18' American Coop and he is finally cleaning it out. Matt and Kristen show how easy it is to clean out one of our coops, with the drop down clean out gate and the 12" deep litter beds that is lined with food safe high density polyethelene. After about 15 minutes, the coop is cleaned out, and we leave some of the litter in there to kick start the new hemp we put in. After two years and 9 chickens, there is no smell from the deep litter bed. Then the question of what to do with all that good chicken poop. If you are going to use it in the garden, do you wait or use it right away. Till or no till. We explain the benefits of the no till method of gardening for a more healthy ecosystem for your plants.
