The Comobuz publisher describes former Columbia Public Schools (CPS) superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood as an impressive guy. Dr. Yearwood has been named as the next superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) in Louisville, Kentucky. Comobuz publisher Mike Murphy joined host Fred Parry in-studio for the hour Saturday on 939 the Eagle's "CEO Roundtable." Mr. Murphy says district officials in Louisville were impressed with the sharp increase in the annual performance report (APR) for CPS from 70.1 percent in 2023 to 86.5 percent in 2024, under Dr. Yearwood. That's a 16 percent increase. Fred Parry tells listeners that Dr. Yearwood was fired by CPS. Mr. Murphy also updated listeners on the status of the former IBM building on Columbia's Lemone Industrial and businessman Raman Puri's plan to build a convention center near Menards in north Columbia. Mr. Parry and Mr. Murphy also discussed the Comobuz model and they discussed the status of the "Columbia Daily Tribune" and the "Columbia Missourian." Fred tells listeners that it's hard for him to read the Tribune. They also discussed voter interest in Columbia issues, with Fred complaining that 75 percent of registered voters didn't vote in Columbia's April municipal election:

I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is one of the most exciting painters working in the world today, Michaela Yearwood-Dan. Hailed for her works that bloom, dance, and come alive when you are witness to them, with an abundance of textures, weathers, colours, mark-makings, and more, Yearwood-Dan intertwines the botanical with abstraction, and brings painting back to its natural-like essence. Never restricting herself to just one medium, Yearwood-Dan works across ceramics, sound, installation, performance, and all-encompassing paintings that can range from small to the colossal, with some measuring up to 8-metres-wide. See them in the flesh and it's like seeing an entire ecosystem unfold, embedded with hidden languages, whether it be the symbolism she uses or the small elements of text, poetry and song lyrics, that add another dimension to her rich, embellished worlds. Raised in London as the youngest of three girls, by parents and grandparents that taught her about craft, weaving, seamstressing, Yearwood-Dan completed her studies at Brighton from 2013–2016, where she graduated top of her class, before going onto experiment with an artistic language that has constantly been growing and reinventing, and pushing paint to its limits. While early work – at the time I met her in around 2019, when she invited me for a studio visit when we were both in our mid 20s – explored more interior images intertwined with house plants, it has been incredible to watch her work mould into spaces of abundance, possibility and exhilaration. And indeed, her work has been described by the renowned writer and curator Ekow Eshun as having “a sense of boundless possibility”, which feels apt for a time like today, when it feels more than ever for art to be our guide to expanding our imagination, and also joy in times of despair. This is exactly the topic of Yearwood-Dan's new exhibition, opening at Hauser & Wirth in London on 13 May, titled No Time for Despair, referencing a line from Toni Morrison's 2004 article for The Nation, which states, “in times of dread, artists must never choose to remain silent.” – and I can't wait to find out more… Exhibition page: https://www.hauserwirth.com/hauser-wirth-exhibitions/michaela-yearwood-dan-no-time-for-despair/ -- THIS EPISODE IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE LEVETT COLLECTION: https://www.famm.com/en/ https://www.instagram.com/famm_mougins // https://www.merrellpublishers.com/9781858947037 Follow us: Katy Hessel: @thegreatwomenartists / @katy.hessel Sound editing by Nada Smiljanic Music by Ben Wetherfield

Columbia Public Schools' (CPS) settlement with retiring Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood contained a gag order that prohibits Yearwood from talking about his departure publicly. Columbia school board president Suzette Waters and interim CPS Superintendent Dr. Chris Belcher joined host Mike Murphy live Sunday morning on 939 the Eagle's "Columbia Buzz" program. Mike Murphy joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" this morning, telling listeners that Sunday's interview with President Waters and Dr. Belcher cleared up a lot of things. Murphy tells listeners that Dr. Yearwood did not retire and that the board chose to part ways with Dr. Yearwood. But he emphasizes that personnel records involving school employees are protected by state law, so the board cannot discuss details. Mr. Murphy tells listeners that this was a negotiated departure that has been in the works for months:

The retiring Columbia Public Schools (CPS) superintendent will be paid regularly on his $261,000 annual salary through December 31 and then will receive a lump sum payment of $667,000 in January. 939 the Eagle's Mike Murphy, who publishes Comobuz, broke that story in late November. He joined host Fred Parry in-studio for the hour Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's "CEO Roundtable." Mr. Murphy outlined the "separation agreement and release” document he obtained through an open records request and explained that, by law, the board and Dr. Yearwood cannot discuss it. Mr. Murphy says he understands that and says they're correct about the law; However, Mr. Murphy says that state law needs to be changed. He says Boone County's legislative delegation should lead the effort to change it. Mr. Parry and Mr. Murphy also discussed Columbia business license fees, which were maxed at $750 from 1964 to 2022. Murphy tells listeners that some business owners are paying triple now for a business license fee and that the cap is now $10,000:

The plight of Black farmers in America has a dark history. The trauma of stolen lands and exploited labor may explain why there are now relatively few Black and Indigenous people in farming, agriculture, or even within environmental activism.  Leah Penniman is one farmer fighting to change that. Penniman explains that there’s a rising generation of Black and brown farmers reexamining their relationship to the land and reclaiming the farming and agricultural practices once held by their ancestors.   Penniman, who is the co-founder of Soul Fire Farm, says that “Black farmers had already declined from 14% of the nation's farmers in the early 1900s to just about 1% today.”  As a result of racism and discrimination Penniman says, “millions of acres of land were lost out of the Black community, and with that so much intergenerational wealth and knowledge.”  Penniman says her mission with Soul Fire Farms was to help end racism and injustice in the food system and explore and embrace of her own ancestral heritage to the land and agriculture; “nature as a source of spiritual connection permeates African diasporic thinking and very much informs the way we [operate] at Soul Fire, but also [how] the broader rising generation are conceptualizing our relationship to the land.”   “The food system pertains to all of us. All of us eat, so all of us are connected. All of us are complicit, but also all of us have these immense opportunities to contribute to change as consumers in the food system.” For over 20 years the Reverend Lennox Yearwood has also been fighting for racial and environmental justice. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Rev. Yearwood has always had a strong affinity for music; “all music, particularly hip-hop and jazz. R&B, the Blues… for me, music was really more a pathway to the soul, just a way to escape. Music is so uplifting, it's so encouraging, it's just so beautiful — particularly with instruments and singing.”   Rev. Yearwood is President and CEO of the Hip Hop Caucus — a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization which began in 2004 and leverages hip-hop culture to encourage young people to vote and participate in the democratic process. Rev. Yearwood’s passion for music ties into his environmental activism and his work on human rights issues in the Gulf Coast region after Hurricane Katrina.  “Hip-hop’s roots are based in people who have been put in sometimes very difficult situations. They're using their cultural expression to shape their political experience. They’re talking about what they're going through, and they're trying to use music and culture to explain and sometimes bring light to situations.”   “Chuck D said that [hip-hop] ‘became the CNN for those communities.’ And so … listening to that, hearing that music, and hearing the power behind it definitely drew me into wanting to be a part of it.”  More: Chuck D on creating ‘naphic grovels,’ embracing mistakes (Press Play, 2023) Rev. Yearwood is actively involved in seeking environmental justice.  He continually highlights racial disparities and heightens awareness of the social and economic issues that negatively impact Black people.  The Hip Hop Caucus’ short film Underwater Projects sheds light on the coastal urban flooding happening in Norfolk, Virginia — including its effects on a historically Black public housing community.   Eternally hopeful and with a strong sense of faith, Rev. Yearwood is optimistic that things can be done to make life better: “When we come together, we do well. That's my prayer, that's what keeps me excited, motivated, and lets me know that at some point in time… That the power of humanity is just an amazing, beautiful thing.”  Delve deeper into life, philosophy, and what makes us human by joining the Life Examined discussion group on Facebook.

The climate movement faces mounting pressure in 2024. Record-setting temperatures and extreme weather disasters continue to devastate over a turbulent summer. Prominent plans to roll back environmental regulations and stiffle climate mitigation and adaptation initiatives have movement leaders pushing back on attacks. Is the climate movement able to handle the pressure at this critical moment?  Few people are as equipped to answer that question as Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr. Over his decades of climate and progressive leadership, Rev. Yearwood has advanced climate solutions with policymaking, culture change, direct action, and more. And he's part of a new initiative to educate people on critical issues like climate change during this transmorative year.  The “2024 & Beyond: Creating Our Shared Future” campaign is reaching out with open town halls to educate and debate on key political issues and building a network of experts and organizations like Center for Climate Justice, Center for Popular Democracy, Hip Hop Caucus, Greenpeace, and Center for Oil and Gas Organizing.   Rev. Yearwood Jr. joins the show this week to discuss his life and work, how change actually happens in the climate movement, why the climate movement needs to address its own weaknesses, and what strategies will be most effective in advancing progress and fighting off attacks.  Rev. Yearwood Jr. is the President & CEO of Hip Hop Caucus. Missouri Senate President Pro Tem Caleb Rowden (R-Columbia), who sponsored the charter school provision, disagrees with that, saying Dr. Yearwood's comments are ludicrous. Ep.182 features MICHAELA YEARWOOD-DAN. Throughout paintings, works on paper, ceramics, and site-specific mural and sound installations, Michaela Yearwood-Dan (b. 1994; London, UK) endeavors to build spaces of queer community, abundance, and joy. Yearwood-Dan's singular visual language draws on a diverse range of influences, including Blackness, queerness, femininity, healing rituals, and carnival culture. Moving freely between media, Yearwood-Dan embeds botanical motifs and diaristic meditations within brushy abstract forms and heavy drips of paint. From the monumental scale of her paintings to the more intimate scale of her ceramics and works on paper, Yearwood-Dan's practice frequently reflects an inviting domesticity. Resisting any singular definition of identity, the artist explores the possibilities of creating spaces—physical, pastoral, metaphorical—that allow for unlimited and unbounded ways of being. Lush and brightly hued, Yearwood-Dan's work is at once personal and political. She often engages colors and materials for their symbolic associations—from the hints of the oranges, pinks, purples, and blues of the lesbian and bisexual pride flags mingling through the compositions to the queer histories of the ceramic carnation and pansy petals collaged into her recent paintings. Language intertwines with botanical motifs throughout Yearwood-Dan's work: abstract habitats teem with painted plant life while live houseplants grow out of wall-mounted ceramics. Within the paintings, she inscribes lines of text—pulled from song lyrics, poetry, or her own diaristic writings. These meditations, appearing at various scales and degrees of legibility, are at once insightful and funny, confident, and questioning. Her words beckon the viewer into a vivid, welcoming world of paradox, play, and contemplation formed within an atmosphere of swirling forms and brilliant chromaticity. Yearwood-Dan's work has been shown at the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, AZ; the Green Family Art Foundation, Dallas, TX; Palazzo Monti, Brescia, Italy; and the Museum of Contemporary African Art, Marrakesh, Morocco, among others. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.; Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, FL; the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA; the Jorge M. Perez Collection, Miami, FL; and the Columbus Museum of Art and the Pizzuti Collection, Columbus, OH. In 2022, she produced her first public mural installation for Queercircle, London, UK. She has participated in a range of fellowships and residencies, including the Palazzo Monti Residency, Brescia, Italy, and Bloomberg New Contemporaries in Partnership with Sarabande: The Lee Alexander McQueen Foundation, London, UK. The artist received her B.A. from the University of Brighton in 2016. Yearwood-Dan lives and works in London. Please visit cerebralwomen.com for her expanded bio. Thank you. Here in the northern hemisphere, as the winter solstice approaches, the light is changing quickly, and the sun sits lower on the horizon with each passing day. By now, all the harvest celebrations have come to an end, but the practice of gratitude and acknowledgement for the rewards of summer's hard work continues.  As we wrap up Season 3 of Seedcast, this very special final episode is dedicated to the hard work that has gone into this podcast. We revisit the diversity of nine productions created since last autumn by different producers. Through this journey, Executive Producer of Seedcast, Tracy Rector, shares her gratitude for how each of these creatives have played a vital role in the storytelling of Seedcast. Storytelling is one of the most connective experiences people have with each other. Throughout the world during the coldest months, Indigenous Peoples wintertime traditions most often include sharing stories about who they are, their histories, and lessons of the season to offer wisdom and inspiration across the generations. Winter is a time to share what we have, to draw from what has been gathered to give us energy and offer lessons of survival through the coldest of seasons and it is through storytelling that the link between humans and all life on Earth – seen and unseen - is understood, maintained, and nurtured.  As our team settles in for the winter, we ask you, our listeners: How will you come together in kinship this winter? Wintertime is the perfect occasion to get to know one another better through storytelling, ceremony, and joy. Enjoy! Special thanks to special artistic contributors Jennifer Kreisberg, Joel Schomberg and Mia Kami.   Host + Co-Producer: Tracy Rector. If you're wondering whether taking custody of client accounts and a virtual assistant is right for your independent advisory firm, this episode's for you! Taking custody can be a scary decision, but sometimes it's the right one. Just ask XYPN member Kate Yearwood Young, CFA, CFP®, founder of Yearwood Young Advisors.  From engineering to Wall Street to founding a successful business, she acquired the skills and services to meet her client's needs where they are.  And their needs dictated that she take custody. Born into the advisor role despite her family's best efforts—her father, aunt, and cousin are in the industry—Kate was encouraged to explore other avenues of interest, but sometimes it's in your blood! After getting a degree in engineering, Kate pivoted back to finance and soon found herself on the Wall Street Trading Floor. She developed her knowledge and expertise in evaluating hedge fund managers for large pension funds and ultra-high-net-worth clients. In 2019, she made the decision to leave her last firm and start her own business. She launched in May 2020 with a six-month-old baby but found a way to persevere and began to grow her firm. Kate has a really unique service offering.  In addition to comprehensive financial planning and investment management, she also has a family office service. She needed to take custody of client accounts because she has bill pay authority for her office service. A deeper dive into the topic reveals her experience with the audit process and the documentation required when you have full control of a client's bank account. We also dive into what she's building and how she plans to get more control of her calendar, the number of hours she works, and how she's leveraging a virtual assistant and soon-to-be outsourced paraplanner. From being in touch with her clients' needs to growing her business in the most sane and productive ways, Kate's story is one that we need to hear.
