But after her mother read a story of a young boy from Michigan who was a diabetic and got under Chiropractic care and was healed and able to get off his insulin shots, she knew I would consider this as a career. She borrowed books from a Family Chiropractor, and used them to write an essay on chiropractic and won a scholarship to Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. As she wrote the material and studied the books, she had no question whatsoever that the Chiropractic premise was perfectly sane and made her realize that she had to be a chiropractor. Our conversation today is with Rania Awaad, M.D. She is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine where she is the Director of the Muslim Mental Health Lab, Associate Chair of the Division of Public Mental Health and Population Sciences, and Chief of the Diversity Section in the Stanford Department of Psychiatry. Her research and clinical work are focused on the mental health needs of Muslims. Her most recent academic publications include an edited volume on "Islamophobia and Psychiatry" (Springer, 2019) and Applying Islamic Principles to Clinical Mental Health Care (Routledge, 2020). She has also produced a toolkit, fact sheet, CME course, and is now editing a clinical textbook on Muslim mental health for the APA (American Psychiatric Association).Through her outreach work at Stanford, she is also the Clinical Director of the San Francisco Bay Area branches of the Khalil Center, a spiritual wellness center pioneering the application of traditional Islamic spiritual healing methods to modern clinical psychology. Prior to studying medicine, she pursued classical Islamic studies in Damascus, Syria and holds certifications (ijaza) in Qur’an, Islamic Law and other branches of the Islamic Sciences. Dr. Awaad is a nationally recognized speaker, award-winning teacher, researcher and author in both the Islamic and medical sciences. In the past, she worked in typical outpatient physical therapy clinics, where she was seeing 4 people every hour. But, she always felt there had to be a better way - because she always felt so rushed with each patient. Our conversation today is with Iman Zamzam, RN BSN, a Wet Cupping (Hijama) Practitioner. She has a degree in Business and never thought about working in healthcare. That changed in year 2011 when she got severely sick for 6 weeks, and the only non-surgical treatment that was effective and reduced her symptoms was Hijama. Her brother had been an Hijama Practitioner for about 20 years, and always encouraged her to practice Hijama, but she didn’t because she was scared of blood. So he performed the Hijama procedure on her in 2011 and she felt the benefits. This encouraged her to earn her Hijama Diploma and License in 2011. She has been practicing Hijama since then. She later went into the nursing field and got a Bachelors in Nursing from Northern Arizona University in 2018.
