E137 - We catch up over Christmas break while Joelle's in Idaho & Julianne's in San Diego editing our documentary. Hear about snowy plans, Poway bandits, Red Riders & Home Alone. We made this year's https://www.AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com calendar, talk crappy kids in photos & Mouse finally gives her London recap. See tourist recommendations from a Brit Pod Scene podcast below & hear Number One Rerun's deep thoughts on Harry Potter. We discuss when to scrub social media for work, & then get right into Weens' viral banana video & Hairy Pants song! Speaking of clickable, listen to Julianne's stories about the real personalities of Jack Black, Michael Shannon & Keanu Reeves. Do they have Brad Pitt's face blindness? Do you forget how you know people like Mouse does? We jump into the gutter for a while to discuss monorchidism & the female body part that rhymes with Horace, chorus & taurus. And finally we discuss Elon Musk's comedy career, finding out what politics, the Rachel Maddow Ultra & BagMan podcasts, & cat-sitting have to do with each other. We bring around the episode talking boobs, mammograms, & gallows humor. Then Weens redefines social work, throws out some gross words & ends questioning her solitude and dislike of crowds these days. If you want to get the tube to North Greenwich you can see the O2 - has outlet shopping, restaurants, etc & Toca Social (a virtual football/soccer place). Cable cars there too so nice views & if you want to be mega adventurous you can walk up the O2 as well. Shopping: start at Marble Arch & walk up to Oxford Circus & turn off into Carnaby Street (you can come back out & head past Tottenham Court Road towards Leicester Square (also cool & near Piccadilly Circus) to see Denmark Street on the way if into music (though not hip hop!) For restaurants/cool shopping - Covent Garden or Borough Market (you can see the Shard near there too). Good coffee chains Oree/Joe & The Juice/Ole & Steen/Peyton & Byrne). There's Harry bloody Potter things everywhere so you won't miss that little sod. Plus obviously for you see Buckingham Palace, go on a London bus, etc - lovely." There are few intergenerational figures in a music scene that sees bands come and go on a weekly basis. Chief among those that are, however, are Al Grigg and Tom Wallace. Best friends since college, the pair first played together as part of 2000s indie wunderkinds Red Riders, before transferring their guitar-loving and hook-wielding expertise over to the garage-rock world with Palms circa 2011. Here, they lay out their life in music, both on and off the road, on the line in their most in-depth interview to date. Whether you came up circa the Hopetoun or circa the Oxford Art Factory, there's some long lines down these palms well worth tracing. Intensity Sunshine is out now via Ivy League/Mushroom. Heads up, Faith No More fans: this ain't your guy, and yes he's heard all the jokes. Power-pop songwriter and dj/music curator Mike Patton joins us as we continue counting down our ranking of all the Beatle songs. At #218, Hold Me Tight is, as Macca describes it, " an attempt at writing a single that didn't quite work out." Sure is snappy though! Mike tells Jonathan why he's way off base with it at #218. Following that is George's "You Like Me Too Much," a song that, once listened to with modern day thoughts and sensibilities, maybe isn't one of George's finest moments. Jonathan put it at #217, Julia puts it in the dumpster. Note: this portion of the episode does contain discussion of abuse. If you'd like to skip that part, following the "intermission," jump ahead about 23 minutes to continue the show. We also discuss Mike's music with the bands Vista Blue, Ralphie's Red Riders, his indie label and power-pop radio show. The dude does it all! Non-Beatles songs in this episode include The Treasures "Hold Me Tight," Vista Blue "Three Chord City" and "I Think Cathy Is Crazy (About You)". Check out Mike's music at https://wearevistablue.bandcamp.com/music. His power-pop radio show "The Radiant Radish" can be heard Saturdays at 9:00pm on Radio Free Nashville (103.7 FM) or online here! The archives of his show are available to stream and are a treasure trove of great pop songs, highly recommended for good times in your ear holes! Red Riders: The two founding members of Red Riders, Alex Grigg and Adrian Deutsch, first met at a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club gig in 2002 and discovered a common interest in music. The band started playing house shows in 2003 and would spend 2004 moving up the ladder of the Sydney music scene with support slots with Jet, The Sleepy Jackson and Franz Ferdinand and the release of their self-titled debut EP before the end of the year. 2005 turned into another busy year with the release of their second EP ‘The Plan A’ amongst more national touring and 2006 saw the release of their breakthrough debut album ‘Replica Replica’ on Ivy League Records. In 2008, Adrian Deutsch announced that he was leaving the band to concentrate on his solo career and was replaced by Brad Heald, who was also playing guitars in The Vines, their label mates at the time. Red Riders released their album, titled ‘Drown In Colour’ in 2009 and continued touring all the way through 2010, even hinting that they were demoing songs for a third album. In April 2011, the band made announcement that they were splitting up, with farewell shows to follow featuring Adrian Deutsch back on guitar and playing as a five-piece outfit. In 2017, Red Riders announced that they were reuniting to support their long time friends Dappled Cities for a string of shows along the east coast. We were lucky enough to capture their Brisbane show during this run. Recorded & Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at The Foundry in Brisbane on the 12th of May 2017. PALMS: Palms are the rockin’ noise brats from Sydney who have been leaving a trail of destruction wherever they go, in the audio sense, that is. The four piece is made up of ex-members of Red Riders, John Steel Singers, Stature::Statue and Straight Arrows. Born kicking and screaming into the music world in 2012, They released their first album ‘Step Brothers’ on Spunk Records in 2013 and have just released their sophemore effort ‘Crazy Rack’ on Ivy League Records. Their brand of noise rock has a summer-y tinge to it, perfect for the season we’re about to enter. Recorded and mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at The Foundry, Brisbane, 20th August 2015. Dead Farmers: Hailing from Sydney, garage-punkers Dead Farmers sprouted up through the cracks of Australia’s largest city’s underbelly and began rocking audiences in the mid-2000’s. Very reminiscent of the Detroit rock scene that produced bands such as The Stooges and MC5, they self-recorded their latest album ‘Wasteland’ straight onto half-inch tape free of reverb and post-recording effects, and sent it off to mastering to be improved upon. Recorded and Mixed Branko Cosic. Recorded at Greenslopes Bowls Club, Brisbane, 14th March 2015. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 27th November 2015. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
