Welcome to The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Season 7 episode 6 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 8 Feb 2024.  As always, the show consisted of 3 hours of Rock and Metal and covered all sorts of artists from late 1960 through to albums released this week.  You should find something amongst this lot, see 'Artists featured' below (in order of appearance).     The Immortals track this week came from Blue Öyster Cult, a track called Shooting Shark off The Revolution By Night album.  Buck Dhara on guitar never disappoints.  The Diabolical Challenge this week looked at the letter ‘F'.  As with last week's 'E', this one was not easy either, not a lot of bands starting with ‘F'.  Foreigner got bumped for Fokofpolisiekar which may not make sense to international listeners.  All I can say is that if you read the book, The Story of Rock and Roll, things will be clearer.  Fokofpolisiekar were a legendary live band and a huge part of my life in the early '00s.   We looked at the following albums and played a track off each: Free – Fire and Water Five Finger Death Punch – American CapitalistFokofpolisiekar – LugsteuringsFoo Fighters – Wasting Light Artists featured:  The Jam, Motörhead, Night Ranger, the Temperance Movement, Phil Campbell, Roan Van As, Tom Petty, Iced Earth, hell Fire, Kiss, L.A. Guns, Massive Wagons, Circus of Power, Doomsday Outlaw, Halestorm, The Distillers, The Wildhearts, Iron maiden, Judas Priest, Nevada beach, Tokyo Blade, Tony Martin,  Roadkill Ghost Choir, Volbeat, W.A.S.P., Blue Öyster Cult, Free, Five Finger Death Punch, Fokofpolisiekar, Foo Fighters, Extreme, Deep Purple, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Avenged Sevenfold, ACDC The Story of Rock and Roll. Even with champions like Peter Gabriel, U2, Jim Kerr, and others singing their praises, and songs like “The Walls Came Down,” “I Still Believe” and “Let The Day Begin” scratching out a presence on college and alternative radio, The Call never lived up to the commercial potential their fans knew they deserved. And when frontman, vocalist, and primary songwriter Michael Been passed away in 2010 while on the road with his son Robert Levon Been's band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, it became heartbreakingly clear that The Call was on 80s band we would not be hearing more music from.   Or would we?   Recently the band found several previously unreleased – and in some cases unfinished songs. The surviving members regathered, adding fresh tracks to fill in the empty spaces, and giving them an incredible polish. They then reached out to fans via a new Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds necessary to release this LOST TAPES project – a campaign that closes in late February 2024. When the band reached out to us, to see if we would like to talk about this incredible project, we jumped at the chance. So on this special episode we sit down with keyboardist Jim Goodwin to hear not only about The Lost Tapes, but about what it was like to write songs, record, and perform with the band back in the day.   Hopefully you heard our full-length special episode featuring a previously unheard 1994 interview with Been, rescued and restored from an ancient cassette tape. If not, please do. And if you have not backed the Kickstarter campaign, you can do that HERE. (We certainly hope you will.) Holli draws on inspiration from her rich theatrical background, as well as from iconic artists such as PRINCE, Dusty Springfield, The Cure, Bowie, Stevie Nicks and Siouxsie and the Banshees.Crafting a unique sound, KiKi Holli's music is beautifully vulnerable and nurturing, with themes of connection, healing, personal growth, and living in the moment. She's been there. Her music is a blend of vulnerability and nurturing, exploring themes of connection, healing, personal growth, and living in the moment. Holli's authentic delivery stems from her own life experiences.KiKi Holli made her debut with a breathtaking cover of Roxy Music's "More Than This," an intimate rendition that reflected her journey through intense grief and loss. Collaborating with Grammy-nominated producer Ethan Allen (known for his work with Throwing Muses, Tricky, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club), she ventured into her own version of the song. Her first original song, “NEW HIGH” has soaring vocals with sunshine-dipped melodies over lush and blissful pop rock soundscapes. The track received praise from the likes of Earmilk, Atwood Magazine and Buzzbands who proclaimed it "a day-brightener in which her crystalline vocals ooze optimism with every note"."Play To Lose" explores leaving toxic relationships, finding one's voice, and regaining confidence. Grimy Goods says “KiKi Holli shines a radiant light on the kind of euphoniously-groovy energy that permeates her songs…delivered via her honey-dipped vocals and the song's gilded instrumentals.” -Steven WardHer single, “Sun Playing Tricks,” is a sultry fever dream in a mirage of lost love. It was praised by Rolling Stone, saying, “KiKi Holli delivers a performance of great beauty.”Her latest release, "PRETTY BOYS," is a dance anthem that transcends genres, appealing to music lovers of all backgrounds. It's about finding your strength and power in that community, in friendship and on the dance floor.” KiKi Holli's signature vocals soar over thumping basslines and energetic synth hooks, inviting listeners to embrace self-expression and confidence. The lyrics explore themes of attraction, allure & self-empowerment, encouraging everyone to be their own version of a "Pretty Boy."KiKi Holli says, “It matters what you think of yourself not how the world defines what a pretty boy may or may not be.”Produced by Grammy nominated producer Ethan Allen, "PRETTY BOYS" boasts a production quality that's as impressive as it is innovative. With a new album in the works, KiKi Holli creates relatable music that culminates into a diary of hope for listeners across the globe. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Holli was drawn to the arts from an early age, with her passions gravitating towards music and theater. Subsequently, she found solace in these disciplines and later earned her BFA in voice and theater for further exploring her unique talents. In addition to being a trained vocalist, Holli also grew up playing the guitar, saxophone and viola. Theatrically she has appeared on stage in the plays Of Mice and Men, Three Sisters and Twelfth Night, and also played the lead role in the Rocky Horror-channeling indie film Isle of Lesbos, celebrated by Swampflix as “a politically angry, deliberately offensive, post-John Waters, queer-as-f*ck movie musical with deep...

Today's guest makes me wish I had a middle name…or two. But it's OK. He gave me one of his. It's Danny Lee Blackwell of Night Beats. I've wanted to have Danny for quite a while. So I have to thank our mutual friend Paula. Without her, this episode would probably not have happened. Danny and I soon discover that we have another mutual friend, Clyde Mays. And he keeps popping up when you least expect it.  We open the show with a cameo by Sam Cooke's Night Beats album and my dogs, Albert and Hammond. Danny grew up in Texas and talks about his unusual influences like Indian classical music and his brother's influence on his musical taste. He started off playing drums just to get into bands. That led him to playing out by the age of fifteen. But he had serious stage fright. But that anxiety helped reaffirm that this was his calling. Danny left Texas for Seattle because he loved everything about the city. Plus his sister was there. That's where he started Night Beats. Danny talks about being open to magic in the studio and keeping things as raw as possible. He's worked with a lot of great musicians, including Robert Levon Been of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, which is how I became familiar with him. Danny discusses how they met and how important Rob has been to him and the band. The sound of Night Beats is always evolving and that is evident in the album Rajan, and it is something special. I think part of that is because Danny is not a gearhead, but he's a collector. He's willing to experiment and seek out unusual sounds. Rajan is out on Suicide Squeeze and Fuzz Club Records. Go get it. I'm not asking! And follow Danny @thenightbeats on Instagram & Twitter. Night Beats should be hitting the road soon so keep an eye out for that. This week features the second interview in a two-part series with Daniel Ash and David J., lyricists and songwriters behind Love and Rockets, Bauhaus, and multiple other band and solo projects. I interviewed Daniel and David separately, with a similar set of questions. The success of their projects can be attributed, in part, to their distinctly different approaches to writing lyrics and crafting songs. Today's episode features David J. I spoke with Daniel and David while they were preparing for Love and Rocket's first US tour in fifteen years. Named after the underground comic by the Hernandez brothers, Love and Rockets announced themselves to the world with their radically unique take on the classic Temptations song “Ball Of Confusion.” This debut proved that they were going to be a force to contend with. It became a huge seller and a popular club hit in the US and Canada, where it also went gold. The legacy of the band has only grown with more people realizing the extent of their influence and generations of new fans discovering them. The list of artists who cite their influence is impressive: The Flaming Lips, The Dandy Warhols, A Place To Bury Strangers, Jane's Addiction, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Beck, Maynard Keenan, Dubfire, the Pixies and many more. Vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Jame Lathren formed Candy Coffins in 2018 in Columbia, South Carolina. A cultural outcast, his resilience, sensitivity and hyperawareness of his emotional state would ultimately permeate his own music, getting right to the heart of the emotions surrounding the human condition. After disbanding his band Crown The Cake, he formed Candy Coffins with hometown guitar legend Tom Alewine (Bachelors of Art), followed by seasoned bassist Alex Mabrey, keyboardist Justin Purdy and drummer Jonathan Bradley (Iron & Wine). With dynamic and textured approach, the band's trademark lush sound bolsters Lathren's emotive songwriting and delivery. With tasteful nods to Joy Division, The Cure, The Psychedelic Furs, The Afghan Whigs and The Cult, as well as The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spiritualized, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Interpol, Candy Coffins' sound is dark and emotionally restless, but with elements of hope and elation. Defiantly unique, their sound is a welcome respite from musical mediocrity.

This is the first interview in a two-part series with Daniel Ash and David J., lyricists and songwriters behind Love and Rockets, Bauhaus, and multiple other band and solo projects. I interviewed Daniel and David separately, with a similar set of questions. The success of their projects can be attributed, in part, to their distinctly different approaches to writing lyrics and crafting songs. This episode features Daniel Ash with David J.'s interview coming next. If you listen to this podcast, you're most likely a fan of music. And chances are, you've seen a live concert. Have you ever wondered what goes into getting a band from one show to the next? What kind of preplanning is needed? And how much more goes into an overseas tour?Well my guest and friend Chris Bergstrom joins me to give us all a taste of what it takes to make a tour successful and how it has changed over the years. He's worked with some incredible acts, like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Dandy Warhols. But he's also worked with acts I wasn't expecting, like The Oregon Symphony Orchestra and country music star Tracy Lawrence. He's done everything from load-ins & load-outs to Front of house, to tour management. He's got great behind the scenes stories as well as a collection of live recordings that I would kill for! But it's not all sex, drugs, & rock & roll. In fact, that stereotype has changed so much over the years. But for many, the hardest part is still acclimating to post-tour (or normal) life.Chris is candid about all of it. So if you want to follow his touring exploits, check him out @blackeyedprod on Instagram. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on IG & Twitter. On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Jeremy Fury from Jeremy & The Harlequins. Magic materializes in many forms, but its clearest manifestation in our world would be music. It exists unseen in the ether, yet certainly leaves a physical, emotional, and spiritual imprint. Jeremy & The Harlequins deal in this sort of magic. Finding the crossroads between sun-soaked sixties California harmonies and New York garage rock gutter fuzz, the quintet kickstart a new phase of American rock ‘n' roll. Following 2013's American Dreamer, they quietly emerged as a critical and fan favorite with Into The Night [2016] and Remember This [2018]. Along the way, they earned the endorsement of USA Today, Paste, Interview, Wall Street Journal, Nylon, Consequence of Sound, Atwood Magazine, Relix, and Huffington Post who christened them “true originals.” Meanwhile, they can be heard loud and clear throughout popular culture with syncs in Edge of Tomorrow: Live. Die. Repeat., Seal Team, Shameless, Vampire Diaries, Royal Pain, Heavy, Life Partners, and a Miller High Life national campaign. On SiriusXM, Little Steven's Underground Garage selected “Starlight” as its “Coolest Song In The World” and “Trip Into The Light” as the “Coolest Song of the Year.” Everything just set the stage for their fourth full-length and 2022 Pasadena Records debut, ABRA CaDaBRA. To conjure up this magic, they tracked the music at Van Zandt's Renegade Studios with producer Geoff Sanoff [Bruce Springsteen, Little Steven, Jesse Malin]. For vocals, they reteamed with Rick Parker [Lord Huron, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Scott Weiland] in Hollywood's Sandbox Studios. They also welcomed an all-star cast of supporting players such as Hamilton lead violinist Jonny Dinklage, Ben Jaffe [tenor sax], and Steve Garcia [trumpet]. The boys introduce this chapter with the spellbinding single “Let Me Out Of You.” Sherry and Jeremy chat about the new album ‘ABRA CaDaBRA' and much more! He began playing in a band with his brother at age 11, doing covers. He began playing bass soon after. His first one being made from some wood he found under his house, clothesline wire, and some nails. Once he got a proper bass, he began playing out, doing the biker bar circuit where fights would break out on the dance floor. After playing with the bands Scarlet and The Morning After Girls, Scott formed The Black Ryder with Aimee Nash. This episode I'm joined by Jared Artaud & Brian MacFadyen, AKA The Vacant Lots. They are definitely the coolest band from Burlington, VT. After realizing they had this great connection, they started writing and playing, and working with some incredible people. They formed a tight bond with Alan Vega of Suicide, Dean Wareham of Galaxie 500, Sonic Boom, Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. They tell me how they manage to play they music live as a duo and still keep the depth. And they have a new album out called Interzone. Pick it up from Fuzz Club records or wherever you buy music nowadays. Follow the band @thevacantlots. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Subscribe, rate, review, & share. And I'd like to thank Leah Shapiro for bringing Jared & Brian into the Performance Anxiety family.
