Find out more at https://www.focusmate.com/ *Main section* Just exactly why are some foods are just so addictive is actually 2 questions: #1 What is it about some particular foods (their ingredients, the way they are processed etc) that can encourage compulsion? ....and #2 Why do we feel compulsive about some foods in the first place? Why do human beings feel they need to manage problems with food at all? #2 is a more empowering question, because it turns us from passive victims into responsible beings with the power to change our lives. Jayna Davis was 15 years old when she first came out as a lesbian to those around her. However, her coming out journey never stops. Due to her femme-presenting nature, she is constantly challenged on her identity and has to correct others about her romantic preference. She opens up about what it's like having to prove herself and her sexuality to others, battling comments like “you don't look lesbian”, “I have girl friends, too” and “I could change your mind”. She also discusses the shame aspect of going against what is “expected” from a woman who looks like her. Sexism, undermining, and harassment occur regularly and unfortunately probably always will. While we have come far in taking steps towards equality for the queer community, there is so much more work that needs to be done. Jayna emphasizes the importance of asking questions, getting informed, and enforcing change. This can be as simple as permitting queer friends to correct you if/when you make a mistake, allowing them the space to open up, and validating their experiences. Jayna reminds us to own who you are with confidence; that “your dreams, desires, and identities are not defined by the way others see you. As you become more in touch with who you are and what you want in life, you might lose connections with people who don't understand. And that's okay. This is the “Know Better, Do Better” series born from the countless conversations two CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals, Lauryn Williams and Chloé Moore, have about the trendy narratives and clickbaity articles that make it hard for them to help their clients. They want to help you gain financial confidence and clarity to control your destiny. Shalini helps her clients ensure that their loved ones stay out of court and out of conflict in the event of their passing or incapacity. Lauryn and Chloé find that a lot of their clients don't feel that they need estate planning because they're too young, aren't married, don't have kids, or aren't rich. But Shalini shares why estate planning is for EVERYONE. In this episode Lauryn, Chloé, and Shalini talk about: What estate planning is Why EVERYONE needs estate planning (Even if you're young. Even if you're single. Even if you don't have kids. Even if you're not a millionaire.) The estate planning documents you need to have in place Why you need to make some important decisions now instead of waiting The importance of having the right people in place to handle your finances if something happens to you Things to think about when choosing who to handle your medical or financial affairs What you need to know if you're in a long-term relationship and living together but not “married” What you need to know about prenuptial agreements (Spoiler Alert - It's not just for rich people.) From the time she wrote her 2015 essay that went viral, “A Letter to My Son Jacob on His 5th Birthday,” Mimi Lemay became more than the mother of a young trans boy—she became an activist, fighting for his rights and thousands of others facing misunderstanding at best and outright harassment and discrimination at worst. Her son Jacob, born “Em” (a pseudonym), knew before he was 3 that his birth gender didn't match who he was. Through his transformation to his true self, he took a journey that was a reflection of Lemay's—a woman raised in an ultra-Orthodox Jewish community within a rigid framework of rules and roles defined by her gender. In this moving episode, we talk to Lemay about her beautifully written memoir, “What We Will Become: A Mother, a Son, and a Journey of Transformation,” how trans visibility has changed since 2015 and how the fight for the rights of trans and nonbinary people has been central in her life. From the joy of seeing Jacob's “gender euphoria” upon finally living as his true self to the pain of seeing discrimination of trans people leveraged for political gain across the country, Lemay talks about what she has learned in the past six years and what we can all do to help ensure every person is cherished. Abigail Dodds teaches on the beauty of God's good design regarding gender. Women, Dodds explains, are absolutely just as fearless as men, but their physical reality naturally makes them nurturers. If women are created to bear life, then what about single women? Though singles are excluded from childbearing, they aren't excluded from anything essential to God's kingdom. Hear how single women can be nurturers and life-givers in their homes and communities. Abigail Dodds, author of "(A)Typical Woman," says that despite the culture's depiction of women as warriors, women's bodies were made to do something very different. To understand a woman's role, you have to study how a woman is made. Men have 50% more body strength than women. Women, on the other hand, are softer, and have the capacity to bear children. Dodds explains that just because a woman is created differently than a man doesn't make her inferior. A woman's fragility, like a crystal chandelier, only increases her value. Author Abigail Dodds, a wife and mother to five, talks about the way men and women are inherently different from one another. It's easy to generalize male and female characteristics, but we must be careful. Dodds admits she doesn't really fit the mold of a woman with a gentle and quiet spirit.
