The concept of expressive individualism in one that all parents should be aware of, as expressive individualism is a pervasive ideology in today's world that's guiding the beliefs and behaviors of our children and teens. Perhaps a better way of saying it is that this ideology is mis-shaping our kids away from who God desires them to be. In a recent article in the 9marks journal, Abigail Dodds explains expressive individualism as holding that each person's core self is an inner psychological self based on inner feelings and desires that ought to be lived out and expressed. Dodds offers three suggestions about raising children in the midst of this ideology. First, help your kids see that who they are is discernable and given to them by God. It's not a matter of personal choice. Second, help them to see that they need to focus their thoughts and actions on God and his will. Finally, help them to trust the external reality of God and his Word as the guide for life, rather than their own personal feelings.

(2) Has the Feminist Movement advanced in recent years and if so, how? (3) How do we rightly or biblically empower women, especially on issues where women are being mistreated or misrepresented? In addition to these questions, we also discuss two events/articles that made their way into the public eye this past week. First, USA Today's publication of an article identifying Dr. or Admiral Rachel Levine as “one of USA TODAY's Women of the Year.” USA Today considers this award, “A recognition of women across the country who have made a significant impact” (USA Today). Second, the NCAA's recognition of Penn State Swimmer Lia Thomas as "the first transgender woman to win an NCAA championship" (The Washington Post). But when we understand womanhood through the lens of Scripture, we see that we need a bigger category for what God has called “woman.”This book breathes fresh air into our womanhood, reminding us what life in Christ—as a woman—looks like. When we see that we are women in all we do, we can be at peace with how God has created us, recognizing womanhood as an essential part of Christ's mission and work.Books:A(Typical) Woman: Free, Whole, and Called in ChristBread of Life: Savoring the All-Satisfying Goodness of Jesus through the Art of Bread MakingPodcast:Home Fires Podcast

What does it mean to take delight in the everyday duties of motherhood? Emily Jensen, co-founder of Risen Motherhood and co-author of the book of the same name, knows firsthand how challenging motherhood can be. A disordered view of motherhood would tell us that the sacrifice it takes isn't worth it and that we need to escape in order to recharge. Emily proposes instead that the mundane, self-sacrificial design of motherhood is actually where the beauty is found. Abigail Dodds, author of "(A)Typical Woman," says that despite the culture's depiction of women as warriors, women's bodies were made to do something very different. To understand a woman's role, you have to study how a woman is made. Men have 50% more body strength than women. Women, on the other hand, are softer, and have the capacity to bear children. Dodds explains that just because a woman is created differently than a man doesn't make her inferior. A woman's fragility, like a crystal chandelier, only increases her value. Ep. 010 | Developing a Theology of Suffering with Abigail Dodds

Held

In this episode of the Held Podcast, I chatted with Abigail Dodds about the importance of developing a theology of suffering. We talked about what a theology of suffering is, how to develop one, and walked through some common thoughts and reactions to miscarriage that cause us to doubt God’s goodness in the face of our suffering. What we believe about God shapes our experience of suffering, I hope this episode will be a true help in helping you to reconcile your hard experience with a good and sovereign God. About Abigail: Abigail Dodds is wife to Tom and mom to five great kids. She is a Regular Contributor at Desiring God, the author of '(A)Typical Woman' (Crossway 2019), an M.A. student at Bethlehem College and Seminary, a baking enthusiast, garden fanatic, and mediocre knitter. She writes at hopeandstay.com and on instagram @abigail__dodds . Questions in this Episode:  Would you start off by just telling us a bit about your own experience with miscarriage personally?   Today’s episode is entitled “Developing a Theology of Suffering.” Can you explain for us what this means, and why it’s so important to have?   I know that your miscarriage led to a much longer season of hardship. Can you tell us a bit about that and perhaps use that experience as an example to show us how what we believe about God and know about his word shapes our experience of suffering? How did that season challenge or shape what you believed about God? Or maybe how did what you believed about God impact your experience of that season of suffering?   I received a message recently from a woman who has miscarried who said that that was the first time she had had to deal with “senseless suffering” personally… and by that she meant, a situation in which there was no one or nothing to blame but… well, God. The intensely personal experience of experiencing death within your own body can raise a lot of theological questions, it definitely did for me! Let’s think for a moment from the perspective of a listener who felt like they had a solid understanding of suffering but is suddenly feeling totally stumped by the problem of evil. If God is good, and in control, how can I reconcile the presence of evil, sickness, and death with his character?! What wisdom do you have for us here?   What are some practical ways that we can develop a theology of suffering even in the midst of it?   Maybe you could help us apply the truth to these real scenarios I have read online…             a. “I feel like God is taunting me, pregnant women and big families everywhere, even at church…”             b. I know God is trying to teach me something, but what is there left to learn? I mean really, four miscarriages?! Can we move on to another trial?!             c. For a women for whom the process is taking forever or is having a season of suffering after loss that won’t let up… perhaps she’s saying “I’ve heard the expression “refiners fire” but I feel like I have been forgotten in the kiln, maybe God is punishing me for something.”             d. I’ve done everything I’m supposed to do! I waited until I was married to have sex, we were prayerful about when to start trying, we have served God and attended church and worked with the youth group! What more could he want from us?! How are these teen girls and drug addicts that don’t even want their kids getting pregnant when I’m not?             e. “It’s been a week since they told me the baby’s heart had stopped. I’m still throwing up, still have this bad taste in my mouth, still so exhausted and having food aversions… The baby is dead, the least God could do is take away these symptoms!”   Questions for every guest: What’s one way God has used your experience of miscarriage to work in your heart and life? If you could encourage a woman to meditate on or memorize any verse or short set of verses in this season, what would it be and why? Noteworthy Quotes: “When the miscarriage happened, I had all my theology ducks in a row. I knew what I believed about who God was— his goodness, his sovereignty— and I had all the boxes checked I knew were from his word. There was nothing lacking in that in a truly sinful or negative way. I had been well taught. And I believed what I was taught from the word. But as the scriptures talk about so often we are tested at times. And so what happens is those beliefs that are in one sense theoretical can’t remain theoretical anymore. And that’s what happened with my miscarriage was it was kind of that first ‘I’m an adult, something bad has happened’ that really impacted me personally.”   “Theology is just our knowledge of God. And so a theology of Suffering would just be trying to understand what we know about God as it relates to our suffering. What does suffering mean when we believe certain things to be true about God’s character. Is there a way to reconcile suffering with what we believe about the character of God? And so those are usually the types of things people are trying to sort through and work through, hopefully biblically, when they talk  about developing a theology of suffering: What do we believe about God in relation to our suffering? It’s often in regards to suffering that we can’t relate to our own sin.”   “Adam sinned. Sin entered the world through the one man, Adam. So if you zoom out, if you step back, sin still is the cause in some ways of the evil and the sickness and the death that we see in the world. There is a futility, a groaning, that has worked itself into creation that we can say is the result of sin. Not our specific sin that led to this miscarriage, but sin in general. And I think that’s a helpful thing to realize and recognize. It’s helpful because it allows us to grieve, and it also allows us to hate sin as we ought to, even original sin that has now gotten into everything in a way.”   “God is in control. We serve a sovereign God who is completely in control of everything that happens. And if I stopped at “Oh, sin cause what happened.” And if I didn’t move past that or join with it that “no, that was God’s plan. He planned it before the foundation of the world, he is sovereign over it,’ and as a Christian we get to add ‘And I know and trust that there is good in it.’ And the best place I can take us to see this is the cross. Here you have Jesus, Gods own son, who is receiving the greatest evil. And yet at the same time we can read in Isaiah that it was the will of God to crush him. I don’t know what to do with that. These are high thoughts. We don’t go around sort of glibbly trying to reconcile them or easily fit them together in a puzzle, but what we do is we stand back and we look at this all powerful God who planned that reality of the cross, the reality of the greatest ‘senseless’ suffering to ever happen to happen to his Son, who did no wrong who was never deserving of anything bad to happen to him, and he worked the greatest possible of all possible goods for it—for his people.”   “What was really helpful to me was to be given very small bite sized pieces of truth that I could affirm and that weren’t too overwhelming.”   “[We must] guard against making someone else’s blessing our trial.”   “Certainly God is teaching us, there is no doubt about it that he is teaching us through our trials, but not in that kind of a transactional way where if we just do X then he’ll finally give us the thing we want. A Christian’s deepest want is him. And so, we don’t use God to get the thing we want, the thing we want is God. What’s potent is that he gives us himself in the trials.”   “What is there left to learn? There’s left to learn the heart of God for you. [Even] if the trials don’t let up, he is for you in the trials!”   “God is so much better than what you can use him for. He, himself, is the gift.”   “We have a sense that there is a way things ought to be and when it doesn’t go that way we can feel the futility and even that is a sign of God’s purposes and plans because they will one day be as they ought.”   “Go to the cross again and just keep looking to the proof, the absolutely irrefutable proof that God is for you. And the only way that you can keep reminding yourself of that reality, He’s for you, He’s for you, He’s for you, is looking at the cross because the scriptures tell us that this is love. Keep reminding yourself of what love actually is.”   “He has used [miscarriage] to help me trust his goodness and his ways more.” Scripture References: The Book of Job Psalm 145 Romans 5 The Book of Ecclesiastes Psalm 131 Romans 8   Intro/ Outro Music: My Soul Will Wait (Psalm 62) [feat. Is motherhood a woman’s highest calling? Is it marriage? Or does it depend on our gifts, interests, and circumstances? Purpose is an important topic. We want to know our God-given purpose because it impacts how we live in the here and now, and today matters for eternity. But here’s the truth we see in Scripture: we all have the same highest calling. We are all called to glorify God. But what does this look like? Bethlehem North Women's Ministry Kickoff ... our theme for the coming year is, “No Other Gospel,” based on Galatians 1:6–7. I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. In this media-heavy age, we face a barrage of messages every day. Some are wholly and obviously untrue, but many more contain a confusing mix of truth and error. We have a crafty adversary constantly luring us with deceptively appealing and persuasive ideas, and the need for careful, biblical discernment is crucial. Pam Larson opened the evening, introducing Women's Ministry at the North Campus and also introduced our theme, "No Other Gospel."  A panel of North women from across the generations discussed this theme, with Abigail Dodds as moderator, and four women from four generations on the panel, each offering her unique perspective on the issue: Adrien Segal Liz Stein Jenni Naselli Addalai Nowlin *Note: this was recorded from the audience, using a phone, so the quality is not great.

In a culture that can belittle womanhood on the one hand—making it irrelevant—and glorify it on the other—making it everything—it’s hard to know what it really means to be a woman. But when we understand womanhood through the lens of Scripture, we see that we need a bigger category for what God has called “woman.” Abigail Dodds brings beautiful and freeing truth to us straight from God's word to us today regarding our being women created in the image of God. I love how she says THAT GOD created women is an essential part of the story He is telling about Himself. But God brings us near through the most peculiar circumstances. He redeems us, he gives us a new name, calling us daughter. He chooses to redeem a people and it looks, from a human standpoint, like he is getting a really bad deal with us. Just like it looked like Boaz should have reconsidered his options. But God he goes ahead makes us his bride, against all human wisdom. He makes the unlovable, lovely, by his beautifying love. God does it all.  2-   God’s people act like God’s people.  This may seem to contradict the first one. If God does it all, who cares how we act? Let’s not focus on Ruth or Boaz, let’s just focus on God. But part of focusing on Ruth and Boaz’s worthiness and honorableness is that it actually glorifies God. We get to see what it looks like when God is working in the life of his people and what obedience is like.  They show us what it looks like to be Israelites on the inside. It doesn’t look like staying a Moabite. It doesn’t look like sin. It looks like honoring others and humble submission, and costly leadership. And so, if it’s true that God does it all and that God’s people act like God’s people, that means that God is at work in us causing us to work really hard. And we should praise God for that. We should praise God for God and we should praise God for Ruth and Boaz and Naomi.  3-   God’s purposes for your story go way beyond your story.  It was true of Ruth and Boaz and Naomi and it’s true of us. We are not in the upline of Jesus, but we know this: we are his downline. We are his descendants and heirs. We are born of him, the very children of God. We cannot know his purposes for our lives, but we must not live like they end when we die. We must be working for goals 1000, 10000 years from now. DO you have that in your flowchart of goals?  What aroma do you want to pass down to your spiritual children? That aroma may far outlast the remembrance of your name. What godly, Christ-like, inheritance are you bequeathing to the people around you? Your children, your nieces and nephews, the kids in Sunday school, your neighbors, your co-workers, your friends? Remember God is faithful to a thousand generation of those who fear him. Who will come after you in the line of Jesus?

Week 3 Ruth Chapter 2 by Abigail Dodds

When I outlined chapter 2, I framed it around Boaz. Here are five points to observe about Boaz: 1)   Boaz’s greeting 2)   Boaz’s protection 3)   Boaz’s provision 4)   Boaz’s prayer 5)   Boaz’s position What can we take away from this scene in Ruth 2? It’s a wonderful story. It’s a chapter where no one sins—at least not explicitly in the text! Did you notice that? I think that’s why it’s such a pleasure to read. Only good examples in chapter two. And that’s what I want us to consider—how different this chapter is from Gen. 3, not to mention Judges and so much of what we observe in the Bible and in our own lives.  Contrast Boaz in Ruth 2, with Adam in Genesis 3. But don't stop there. The point of the story isn't that Boaz seems to be a lot better than Adam. The point is that Boaz is a pointer to the Better Adam: Jesus. And when we compare Boaz to Jesus, we see just how much better Jesus is than anyone else in history--even worthy Boaz.

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I had a chance to chat with Ginger Ciminello about freedom! Ginger and I chat about what it looks like to walk in the freedom we have in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Listen to what she said, “The Gospel is Jesus plus nothing equals salvation. When Satan wants to put on heavy burdens of the consequences of our sin or of the law and saying you have these 613 commands that you have to follow or you are not enough, Jesus instead comes and says, ‘Come to me all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, learn from me, for I am humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’”   I confessed to Ginger that it’s a real struggle for me to walk freely, but after this conversation paired with the past two episodes we released on rest with Abigail Dodds and on fear with Matt Lantz, I am finding myself more readily embracing the rest and freedom we have in the Gospel when my fear is rightly oriented on God which leads to a rightly oriented faith in Christ.     GINGER’S RESOURCES Galatians Galatians for You by Tim Keller Breaking Free by Beth Moore You Can Change by Tim Chester Counseling   GINGER’S SIMPLE JOYS Date night with our cup of questions Sunday naps Being in the Bible early in the morning   CONNECT WITH GINGER Website Facebook Instagram Twitter   SPONSORSHIP DETAILS Get more for your money at MyBargainBuddy.com! On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I had the true joy of chatting with Abigail Dodds, someone I’ve admired from afar as I’ve read her articles for Desiring God and followed along with her life via Instagram. Abigail is married to Tom and mom of five kiddos ranging from age 14 to 4. She’s a part-time writer, part-time Bible study teacher, part-time homeschool teacher, part-time baker, gardener, and knitter. But she would tell you she’s a full-time Christian, a full-time wife and mom, full-time member her church, and full-time friend and sister in Christ. She’s also soon to be a student again, as she’s starting this fall at Bethlehem College and Seminary getting her Masters in exegesis and theology.   Today we chatted about REST! Something that we, as believers, have already been given, but too often fail to actually rest IN. Here’s one of my favorite quotes, “Knowing Jesus means we get to know the Father. In knowing Jesus, we know rest.” Hearing Abigail, a busy mom of FIVE kiddos, communicate the true rest we have in the Gospel encouraged me deeply, especially in this busy season with little people.
