While there are many positive aspects of The Eating Coach podcast, one potential downside is that some episodes may lack in-depth commentary. While they are packed with useful information, they could benefit from more analysis or personal anecdotes from Harriet herself. However, this does not detract significantly from the overall quality of the show as it still provides valuable insights into nutrition and overcoming food addictions.
In conclusion, The Eating Coach podcast is a must-listen for anyone looking to improve their eating habits and regain control over their relationship with food. This episode is a follow on from episode 207 on your body as your long lost twin. Listen to that here: https://eatingcoach.libsyn.com/ec-207-your-body-is-your-long-lost-twin Today I talk about three ways to reconnect to that long lost twin inside you and make those important health and weight goals much more easily achievable. Reconnection Point 1: Eating Presence What is eating presence? Well, it's slow eating, Jim - but not as we know it. Slow eating has probably the same status in your mind as watching paint dry while being poked with a sharp stick - boring and painful. No lie - it is uncomfortable. But in the same way that many of the great leaps forward in your life (getting married, becoming a parent, getting the promotion) involved discomfort, it is so worth it. So what has eating slowly got to do with feeling more connected to your body? Well, when you are eating slowly, you are NOT eating fast - and speed eating is a surefire way to check out of your body. It's as if you have to drug yourself just to sit next to your wounded self in the canteen of life. It's like Back to the Future where George McFly is the wounded self, Biff the bully is the inner critic, and Marty (Michael J Fox) is the part of you that is eating slowly to sit by George. Reconnection Point 2: Evolutionary Psychology Evolutionary psychology is, in a nutshell, the part of our brain left over from our cavedwelling ancestors: our Cavebrain. Fight or flight is one example - you switch into lightning fast reaction mode if you see a dangerous driver or your child runs into the road. The great news is that you can use your Cavebrain to feel more body acceptance. Reconnection Point 3: Possibility Shifting People have been in struggle for years and years around their health. Limiting beliefs are the culprit - but simply telling yourself to ignore them. The truth is that these beliefs are a faulty coping mechanism. In this episode I go into more details on this. Top of many people's health goals is weight loss. The problem with this is that this perfectly useful measure of health has been corrupted by the diet and beauty industries, who have injected harsh unrealistic expectations into the mix, along with a nice toxic dose of body shame. Actor Rebel Wilson's story around her weight loss departs from virtually every other celeb's yo yo dieting, and she has a lot to teach us about the difference between toxic perfectionism and healthy health goals. There are two distinct reasons that I am guessing that underlie Rebel's sustainable weight change Find out what they are in this episode. Journaling for this topic: Write down all the reasons you have to lose weight. Now put them in order of internal importance. For example, if you have written ‘to ease joint pain' and then ‘to fit into my favourite dress' then easing joint pain must come before the dress, because it impacts your life on a deeper level. Think health, think ease of movement, think what else you could do that you cannot nowadays. Now look at the top and bottom reasons and notice if your motivation has shifted. Heads Up Here's the link to access the talk on Carrot or Stick? Neither! On Wed 3rd August at 8pm UK (3pm Eastern) https://www.facebook.com/groups/eatingcoachgroup What is The Fundamental Fatribution Error? I made this term up. It is a corrupted version of the fundamental attribution error (FAE), which is the mistake we make when we for example blame others' bad driving on personality defects, but if we cut someone up in traffic it is usually down to factors outside our control. Most people believe that they are above averagely skilled drivers. The fundamental fatribution error (FFE) is when you weaponise the FAE against yourself, and is exemplified by self attack statements like "I'm so fat because It's so undisciplined" In this episode you will find out why the FFE is so toxic AND so strangely comforting…as well as an alternative. About The Carrot and Stick Talk on Wed 3rd August: We all know about carrots and sticks when it comes to human motivation. Punish or reward yourself (or get someone else to do it for you) and you are sorted…right? Wrong. This Wednesday at 8pm UK (3pm EST) I will be talking about why I don't think either really work for stopping binge eating or freeing yourself from junk food addictions like sugar. For anyone with a history of food compulsion, the stick will trigger their Inner Food Rebel, a force 1000 times more powerful than any goals you might set. I have found that carrot does work SOMETIMES for me…but only under certain conditions. And it has never really landed with any of my clients. So…what can we replace the carrot and the stick with? Something deeper. Something that always works. Something that connects you to a more powerful way of living. Something that is totally transferable to other areas you need motivation for. Clip discussed in this episode https://youtu.be/KaknXLvgJI4 Heads up: Grab your link for the 5 Minute Appetite Suppressant Session here: https://www.theshiftinside.com/sessions/ One of my favourite films is Arrival, starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. But it's not just a great movie - it is a brilliant metaphor for ending binge eating. Adams plays Louise Banks, a linguist who the army have asked to help do a bit of translation. Alien translation. Yup, there's a egg-shaped UFO floating in the air, and it's all down to her to find out why. In this clip, we see Louise take off her protective suit in order to really communicate properly with the aliens. Everyone is freaked out, but no harm comes to her. In this clip, the protective suit is emotional eating, and the aliens are life. The beautiful, messy, uncertain life you miss out on when you keep yourself finished via binges and junk food. Louise takes a risk and realises she CAN get to know the aliens better. Are you willing to take the risk of managing your life without food? What might your life look like without food compulsion? One that is also a digestive aid and can help reduce stress. The only drawback is that you need to sit and do nothing for 5 minutes while the pill takes effect. Oh yes, and it's free too. Q: Would you take it? A: Why the heck wouldn't you? Something 100% natural that makes you eat less, with a price tag of £0. At this point you may be thinking: What's the catch, Harriet? And there is one - but it's a catch in the same way that you need to learn to read in order to enjoy The Harry Potter series. A 'catch' that you'll be glad exists. Ok, so the catch, the big reveal - is that this appetite suppressant is…. Slow eating. Ta-dah! Confused? Disappointed? Yes Harriet, I'm Totally Confused What if I told you that eating fast blocks satiety (fullness) signals to your brain. Your stomach can't really know it has had food if it's coming in too fast - and your body cannot properly digest and use the nutrients in the food if you have not chewed it properly. This is a bit like a quiet drink in a cosy pub that suddenly gets overwhelmed by 20 party goers. How well would you be able to get to know each of the new arrivals? Yes Harriet, I'm Pretty Disappointed What if I told you that eating fast puts your body into a state of stress, which triggers the release of cortisol - the fat storage hormone which is responsible for millions of people's central obesity AKA belly fat. Central obesity is one indicator that you could be starting down the path to type II diabetes. So maybe the point of slow eating is to avoid eating your way to a big tummy and a big health problem down the line. Now, what if I told you that there was a easier-than-you-think way to get started with this thing that you assume is too hard and undervalue in order to justify your perception of its difficulty? The answer is to get started in five minute increments. The answer is to turn slow eating into a game, thereby removing all the pressure. The answer is to leverage the power of a tribe to motivate you. The answer is to attend The Eating Coach Zoom session on Thursday 28th July at 8pm UK time. It is free, but there will be no recording. This is only for people who take the trouble to attend. It is a highly experiential session. (Can't make it? Some people, perhaps, would say that there was little to choose between the two ways, but Dumbledore knew - and so do I, thought Harry, with a rush of fierce pride, and so did my parents - that there was all the difference in the world.” No idea? Grab your link for the 5 Minute Appetite Suppressant Zoom session on 28th July: https://www.theshiftinside.com/sessions/ Pop Quiz: #1 Would you give a five-year-old Tolstoy's epic War and Peace as reading homework? #2 Would you ask the office junior on their first day at work to present to the board of directors? #3 Would you get a learner driver to tackle a Formula One racetrack? No, no - and once again NO! So why do millions of people regularly do the equivalent in terms of managing their health and weight? War and Peaceing your health means taking steps that are far too advanced for you. In this episode I talk in more depth about this, and give an alternative.
Heads up: Join the Eating Coach Facebook group here to access the Live talk on parent-child dynamic: https://www.facebook.com/groups/eatingcoachgroup You've heard of dinner dates, right? But have you ever thought about dating your dinner??? You: What madness is this, Harriet? Me: This quite ludicrous title hides a very powerful shift that is the foundation for this work. It is highly likely that for a long time you have been in a parent-child dynamic with how you eat. Basically this involves the diet being the strict parent and the dieter being the naughty child who cannot be trusted to make their own food choices. Looking to a diet or personal trainer or ANY external meal plan for instructions you must slavishly adhere to in meal planning and eating is to risk putting yourself in the naughty child role - because too often these meal plans etc are sold as temporary escapism. Think: lose 10lbs in a week and so on. No human (except those giving birth) can do so sustainably. Instead, we are going to EXPERIMENT with trying new ways of eating. Think of me as a matchmaker, helping you find the best way to eat for yourself. If I was a dating coach, my job would not be to force my idea of Mr or Mrs Perfect onto you, but to help you meet someone who is good for you, but also that you want to date again. Cheers now Harriet PS I will be in the Eating Coach Facebook group tomorrow (Wed 13th) for a new weeklyfeature - talks called What Really Works Wednesdays. I'm going to talk about something called the parent - child dynamic that is at the heart of so many compulsive eaters' food issues. The Eating Coach is back with a series of short 5-6 min episode for your pleasure during the month of July. Today: How junk food is an anaesthetic (as well as being damn hard to spell!). Check out the Facebook group where I will be posting more content. https://www.facebook.com/groups/eatingcoachgroup Many people understand that emotional eating is trying to do the job of managing life, a bit like a sticking plaster or band aid. But what I have realised is that it serves a much more subtle and invisibly powerful function - that of an anaesthetic. If you've ever come down from any kind of high (be it from food or overstimulation) and used a takeaway to fill that emotional gap - you are using food as an anaesthetic. If you binge because you are dreading the meeting with person X - you are using food as an anaesthetic. If you use sugar as dutch courage before an interview in the same way alcoholics nip into the pub - you are using food as an anaesthetic. The question is - does the anaesthetic ever work? If it did, then you would have renewed vigour, boss that meeting and ace the interview - you would be more confident with the help of food. Of course not. No anaesthetic can ever do more than a temporary job. That's what they are meant for. Great for dental work, rotten for emotional eating. So the question to ask yourself before you anaesthetise yourself via the deli aisle is this: Is it worth it? The Eating Coach podcast is back and in this episode I have two more questions you can ask to alienate yourself from that anaesthetic. Cheers now! In a nutshell, Eating Presence means eating nutritious food slowly. It doesn't mean being perfect and trying to turn yourself into a poster girl/boy for low carb/keto/paleo/no dairy/no sugar etc etc. It means aiming for the most nutritious meals possible, while still allowing pleasure. And it means eating them consciously. In this episode I go into detail about what Eating Presence means in the real world, and we hear from on of my clients and how it has helped her. An interview that makes no mention of food – yes, it's true! I interview artist Catherine Rains and I wanted to bring you this interview because I extracted so much wisdom from it. Catherine is an amazing human being who has lots of life lessons that will put food out of a job. At the end of the interview, I discuss two areas relating to compulsive and binge eating that what we talked about #1 – Non-verbalising feelings #2 – the difference in language between us. I referred to the victim, where Catherine talks about ‘the child'. How much of the shamed child lives in you, one who is carrying shame that doesn't belong to her? Highlights “Double-pronged non-resistance”: while continually affirming the job she wanted, she was at the same time embracing the job she had. How to be unintentionally intentional The five words anyone can use in a negative situation to feel more empowered Catherine's epiphany about non resistance The non linear nature of change. How she diverted her energy to sidestep jealousy and intended her way to the job of her dreams Why affirmations don't work for so many people - because they are doing this thing alongside the affirmation Her strategy for releasing fear and dread after her cancer diagnosis (I have never heard this from anyone else) How she developed compassion for her husband in the midst of her divorce but still shielded herself from his manipulation Her hilarious way of managing old resentments RESOURCES Check Catherine out on Instagram: @catrains.artist https://catherinerains.com/ See the Freedom from Sugar course: https://www.theshiftinside.com/freedom/ Find out about one-to-one coaching: https://www.theshiftinside.com/coaching/ Watch the video version of this interview: https://www.theshiftinside.com/catrains/

Today I present a completely biased review of Whole 30. Biased? I hear you cry. Isn't that meant to be UNbiased? Nope. I am completely skewed in favour of recovering binge eaters finding a programme that empowers them, that helps them start to trust themselves again. One that allows them to proceed at a doable pace, and build confidence as they go. This diet in sheep's clothing is not it. Read on (or listen to the podcast episode below) for more information and what the alternative looks like. What Is Great About Whole 30 It increases awareness about all the fake natural sweeteners out there, such as agave nectar A lack of focus on measurements, although it seems to be very happy with before and after photos, which are problematic. Problems With Whole 30 #1 It tries to do too much, too fast. This is not just a misguided issue that is borne ourt of well-intentioned ambition. It is a cold, hard profit-driven strategy that leverages compulsive eaters desire to escape themselves via a temporary transformation. It is very, very hard to give up a multiplicity of foods that you are addicted to all at once and make that change sustainable. I think the clue is in the name. No wonder it's not called Whole Forever. #2 it Demonises Certain Nutritious Foods That Actually Reduce Compulsive Urges and Cravings Quinoa. Lentils. Brown rice. Ah yes, how silly of me not to see that they need to placed in the nutritional sin bin with high fructose corn syrup, candy cigarettes and deep fried everything. Really? Really? #3 Fruit Juice Is Permitted That's right, kids. Lentil soup is verboten, but something with more fructose than Coke is OK. Listen to the podcast episode above to hear what Dr Robert Lustig has to say about fruit juice and type two diabetes. #4 It's Based on Original Sin This criticism is something that Whole 30 shares with just about every health fad and diet out there. You are broken the deprivation-fuelled edicts silently imply. You can chase that bad guilt and shame away with this nutritional hairshirt. Escape yourself in only 30 misery filled days! That is one whole month of your life you're never getting back. If you've been using food to manage your life, trying to leverage guilt over past mistakes is not only unkind to yourself…it's downright impractical. #5 It Denies Pleasure Just because you may have eaten chaotically and got extreme and fake pleasure from food does NOT mean that misery and deprivation is the counterbalance. Pleasure is a core human drive, and if you deny it, your primitive Cavebrain will take over and make sure you get it via more binge eating and other unhelpful knee jerk responses. Bye bye Whole 30. #6 It Sets Up a Parent-Child Dynamic With Food Listen to the podcast episode to understand exactly what I mean here. Alternatives To Whole 30 If nonsense like this programme is not the answer to your food compulsion, then what is? Here are some pointers. *Curiosity *Experimentation – which gives you data and is impossible to fail at. In the episode, I give a concrete example of how this plays out. *Learning to relax enough around food to get real (not fake) pleasure from real food *Imperfectionism *Being present with food, instead of using it as an escape route from self More on coaching with Harriet https://www.theshiftinside.com/coaching/ RESOURCES Freedom From Sugar programme www.theshiftinside.com/freedom Whole 30 Rules https://whole30.com/whole30-program-rules/ Fat Chance is by Dr Robert Lustig Louise Breaks The Binge-Deprivation Cycle episode https://eatingcoach.libsyn.com/ec-156-louise-ends-25-years-of-the-binge-restrict-cycle Email me about your emotional eating. tell me about yourlast emotional eating episode info {at} theshiftinside.com
In this third part of my series on addiction, I tackle the question of why some foods are just so addictive….or as I want to rephrase it, just why is it so easy to feel compulsive about certain foodstuffs? *Brilliant Idea of The Week* is Focusmate. Find out more at https://www.focusmate.com/ *Main section* Just exactly why are some foods are just so addictive is actually 2 questions: #1 What is it about some particular foods (their ingredients, the way they are processed etc) that can encourage compulsion? ....and #2 Why do we feel compulsive about some foods in the first place? Why do human beings feel they need to manage problems with food at all? #2 is a more empowering question, because it turns us from passive victims into responsible beings with the power to change our lives. https://www.theshiftinside.com/tide/ to find out more about dismantling your fear of hunger. Is this a problem for you? In this podcast episode of The Eating Coach, we dive into this topic - one that I have not heard discussed often. I talk openly about my own anxiety around my appetite, and what happened when I actually decided to experience hunger intentionally. I was very surprised at what I discovered. Part One: Why You Might Have a Fear of Hunger Childhood experiences. Food was used to give adults power over you. Food as a way to Numb yourself out In both scenarios, hunger can act as a very persuasive PR tool being used by your child rebel or the part of you that feels it is essential to numb out I managed overeating a long time ago, but lockdown created a very powerful PR for my compulsion because I was doing too much. I dissolved Some key relationships which created lots of fear. I perceived genuine hunger which was not always genuenuine. about managing my life Part Two: What Happened When I Faced My Fear of Hunger I realised that hunger is not a fire, it is a tide I realised that hunger is plastic I discuss the role that ghrelin (the hunger hormone plays) here and the evolutionary reasoning behind the plastic nature of hunger Part Three: Over To You Ideas for you to get going on your fear of hunger RESOURCES Intermittent fasting 2.0 episode https://eatingcoach.libsyn.com/ec-177-your-internal-hunger-games The Metronome https://www.theshiftinside.com/metronome/ Fear of Hunger coaching programme https://www.theshiftinside.com/tide/
In this episode, I take inspiration from The Hunger Games series, where hunger is used as a tool to control the people. What if hunger is not what you think it is? What if you are unconsciously using hunger as a tool to control YOUR life? In This episode, I talk about *How fear of hunger was an invisible force I used to oppress myself for years The concept of restrictors vs permittors – how i used health fads. My fear of hunger and how it manifested *What purpose fear of hunger REALLY served for me Starring George Mcfly *How some foods create their own hunger ecosystem I talk about processed carbs as an example here. *What happens when humans allow themselves to be hungry Surprising evidence about how this is not only good for us, but easier than you think. Have you ever heard anyone ever say "No, thanks, I don't actually like bread"...? Nope, me neither. Taking a tour of not only the Sugar Rollercoaster, but the Neolithic age, The Roman Empire and The Hunger Games, let's take a peek at the fascinating and surprisingly shocking hold bread has on the human race. A replay of episode 53. *Stupid Headline of The Week* No Gluten, No Dairy, No Joy *Main section: Why Is Bread So Addictive? * A short preface on gluten intolerance - the symptoms. I then have a discussion on if we should change the word 'addictive' in the same way I want us to replace 'addiction' with compulsion'? There are 2 reasons why bread is addictive. Reason #1 relates to white bread. Being a source of highly refined carbohydrate, it triggers the production of glucose and consequently insulin into the blood stream. It is this regular emergency response, the call for insulin that can lead to obesity, type II diabetes and a host of other health problems. Reason #2 is less well known. You probably know that bread contains gluten, but have you ever heard of gluten exorphins? They have an opioid effect on the brain and can cause spontaneous behaviour. Compulsive binge, anyone? Fascinating factoid of the week: The roman empire used bread to subjugate the peoples it was dominating RESOURCES https://www.telegraph.co.uk/health-fitness/nutrition/no-gluten-no-dairy-no-joy-has-britain-become-nation-nutrichondriacs/ https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/signs-you-are-gluten-intolerant https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2013/06/26/195292850/can-you-be-addicted-to-carbs-scientists-are-checking-that-out https://www.scgmatt.com/researchology-blog/archives/02-2015 http://www.greenmedinfo.com/page/dark-side-wheat-new-perspectives-celiac-disease-wheat-intolerance-sayer-ji Find out more about coaching at http://www.theshiftinside.com/coaching/ Get your free audiobook at: http://www.audibletrial.com/EatingCoach Sound effects by https://www.zapsplat.com Get your free Hidden Sugars Checklist to print off at http://www.theshiftinside.com/hidden/

The locus of control refers to your perception of how much power you or the world outside has to affect events and outcomes. An internal locus of control means that you feel powerful and an external locus means the opposite. In today's episode, I talk about how these two concepts can apply to eating, and how it is Not a black and white distinction. I give some practical ideas for moving from external to internal. Go to https://www.theshiftinside.com/fast/ to secure your place for the experiment next week. It's free, so this should be an easy yes! In 2018 I did an intermittent fasting experiment. In this episode I discuss my recent learnings from a new experiment I have been doing, as well as listeners' views on the matter. I discuss if this mode of eating is restrictive or freedom giving. Listener quote ‘IF has so many options, that's what works so well, it's finding what works with your circumstances. It's endlessly flexible, this removes the common feelings of failure that are a part of ‘diet plans'. If you have an opportunity to enjoy food and company, just change things around. I don't know that there is one person who has ever fixed the problem, it's a matter of management over a lifetime, a lifetime that you want to be enjoyable.' Victoria IF EXPERIMENT – W/C 15th February This is two-day experiment that will take place on Tuesday 16th and Thursday 18th February. If you want to move the two days you are welcome to, but be aware that there will be some Zoom calls so you may want to do this alongside others/ Be aware that it will also require some preparation time. This experiment has been designed for anyone who is interested in intermittent fasting (IF) but has misgivings or questions about its workability, especially if you have a history of compulsive eating. You are also welcome if you have some experience with IF and are looking to optimise it or try out a different approach. How It Works You can do the experiment alone, or join the Zoom and/or Facebook group. This will open on Saturday 13th Feb. There will be a Zoom call on Monday 15th at 8pm GMT where I will answer any questions you might have. I will also share some ideas on the experimental mindset and how important this is Day One is Tuesday 16th February. On this day, you are going to try IF on this day anyway you like. You choose the eating window and what foods you eat. I will lead another Zoom call on Tuesday at 4pm then again at 9pm GMT, when I will release the 3 guidelines for Thursday's IF day. Day Two is Thursday 16th February. On this day you will be following 3 guidelines that I will release on Tuesday evening. These are the guidelines I use myself and have found to be very user friendly for any recovering compulsive. You then have Wednesday to get ready for Thursday, in terms of buying and preparing food. I suggest setting aside 60-90 minutes on Wednesday, although you may not need all of this time. NB You do not need an hour and a half a day for the rest of time to implement my IF approach ! Hurray! ! There will be a third Zoom call on Thursday at 4pm and again at 9pm to wrap things up.
