How much Vitamin J are you getting in your life?In today's episode, we're talking with Dr. Zarya Rubin, a Harvard educated functional medicine physician, and one of the questions she often asks patients is about whether they're experiencing enough joy and connection.Though there's a societal push for more exercise and more kale, connection is actually one of the MOST important things you can do for your physiological health. According to a documentary we both love – Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones – regular human connection could add 15 years to your life. Lack of connection is similar to smoking 20 cigarettes a day.I saw Dr. Rubin give a TED Talk here in Seattle a few weeks ago on burnout, and I am so grateful that she was able to come onto the podcast today. This will not be the last time we talk about this but it is definitely an amazing foundational episode to start to explore this topic. In this episode you'll hear about:The impact of stress, increasing cortisol levels and trickling into other parts of your bodyThe studies that have recently come out about college students who entered school during the pandemicLive to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones and the 15-year impact connection can have on your life expectancyLoose ties, relational diversity, and how interactions at coffee shops can not only change your day but impact your long-term healthTechnology's impact on in-person connection and how to get in touch with your fun sideResources & Links:Learn more about Dr. Zarya Rubin on her website where you can access her free Burnout to Balance Toolkit and follow her on Instagram. Former NASA chief Dan Goldin oversaw creation of the station. What does he think of it now? He speaks to Aviation Week's Joe Anselmo and Irene Klotz a quarter of a century on from the U.S. Unity module docking with Russia's Zarya module to form the ISS.
LAUNCH CONTROL: Main engine start, six engines up and running. And lift-off! Lift-off of the Proton rocket and the Zarya control module. The International Space Station is under way. The International Space Station was born 25 years ago today. The first piece of the station was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. It was built and launched by Russia, but paid for by the United States. For years, it provided control, crew quarters, and storage. Today, it's mainly a storage locker. Zarya is a Russian word for “sunrise.” The module was based on the design of the first series of Russian space stations, called Salyut. It's a steel can more than 40 feet long. It weighed more than 20 tons at launch, plus several tons of propellants. It wasn't alone for long. Space shuttle Endeavour delivered the second module, known as Unity, a couple of weeks later. Astronauts used a robotic arm to attach the two pieces. It took a couple of years for the station to really start to take shape, though. Today, it consists of dozens of major pieces. In all, they span more than the length of a football field, with a total mass of almost a million pounds. But it all started with a single large can, delivered to orbit 25 years ago today.LAUNCH CONTROL: 30 seconds into the flight, good first-stage performance. The Proton delivering 1.9 million pounds of thrust from its six engines. ... Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

In this episode, we dive into the fascinating story of Kristina Kashtanova, author of "Zarya of the Dawn," a comic book that she illustrated using AI-generated images. Kristina shares her personal struggles during the pandemic, including losing loved ones, being unemployed, and undergoing dental surgery. She talks about how she discovered the power of AI-generated images through OpenAI DALL-E and how it helped her overcome her pain and isolation. We learn about her creative process of generating various images before remembering her story and deciding to use AI-generated images to illustrate it. Kristina also shares her experience of sharing her progress on social media and receiving positive feedback from the AI community. Her story is a testament to the intersection of art and technology and how it can be used to overcome personal struggles and create something beautiful. We are also going by a duo of Richmond Law School Professors, Ashley Dobbs and Roger Skalbeck. Professor Dobbs runs the IP and Transactional Law Clinic at Richmond and explains that the clinic provides an opportunity for law students to work directly with clients on intellectual property matters, such as copyright and trademark protection, under her supervision. The clinic primarily works with startups, entrepreneurs, and creators who cannot afford legal services. Ashley and her team also handle various transactional matters related to intellectual property, such as forming entities, reviewing contracts, and assigning rights. By working with clients in a real-world setting, law students are able to apply their book learning to practical situations and gain valuable experience before entering the workforce. She is also providing assistance to her fellow professor Roger Skalbeck for his "Copyright §101" Comic Book. Roger Skalbeck created a comic book to teach his students about copyright laws in the United States. Roger explains that he wanted to create something that looked like the comic books he grew up with, such as the Avengers and Spider-Man, with a vibrant and simplified aesthetic. He used various tools, including Mid-Journey for image generation and Photoshop and Pixlr for updates, before putting it together with a layout program called Comic Life 3. Roger's comic book provides a visual representation of each individual definition in the statute, making it easier for students to understand complex legal concepts. By using a comic book as a teaching tool, Roger is able to engage his students in a fun and creative way while also providing them with a valuable learning experience. Tune in to learn more about Roger's efforts to use a comic book to teach copyright laws and how it is helping to transform legal education. Roger has a class set up in the Fall Semester this year that will require his students to create a comic book that focuses on a practical aspect of Access to Justice. The United States Copyright Office (USCO) has issued a ruling on a previously copyrighted comic book that was created using “A.I. art,” and the results were a bit of a split decision. While the story for the comic and the specific compilation of the story with the images within the comic both remained under copyright, the copyright for the individual images within the comic book has been revoked. This ruling has set a precedent for how the USCO views A.I. art and copyrights involving its use. The comic book in question is Zarya of the Dawn, created by Kris Kashtanova using the text-to-image engine Midjourney. While the comic book was initially copyrighted, the USCO discovered through Kashtanova's social media postings that the images for the comic were created using A.I. art. The Office requested further information on the matter and tentatively determined it would revoke the copyright protection on the art in the comic at the end of last year. Kashtanova and her attorneys had a month to appeal the decision, but the final ruling has now been issued. The USCO laid out its general position on copyrights involving A.I., stating that it will not register works produced by a machine or mere mechanical process that operates randomly or automatically without any creative input or intervention from a human author. In this specific instance, the USCO notes that Midjourney generates images in an unpredictable way, and users are not the “authors” for copyright purposes of the images the technology generates. The USCO believes that Kashtanova never had direct control over what images would be created, but rather they just picked through the randomly generated images until they found images they felt worked for the comic.

How to Deal With Burnout We will take a closer look at the effects of burnout, including physical symptoms, mental exhaustion, and emotional exhaustion. We will also discuss the early signs of burnout and what you can do if you feel like you're experiencing burnout.
