402 Recognizing and Escaping Toxic Friendships

Alcohol Recovery Podcast | The ODAAT Chat Podcast

Today I am joined by my dear friend Michelle Ferriss, a licensed marriage family therapist. She's been on the podcast two other times because she's awesome! Her area of expertise is on dealing with codependency, how to escape narcissistic relationships and overcoming anger issues. In this episode, we're going to talk about toxic friendships, how to know if you're in one, ways to improve them, and steps to take to escape them. This is such an important topic because as we grow, evolve and change, so do the relationships we have. And with people feeling more disconnected and lonelier than ever, we need to know how to make new friends too. Before we jump in, last week I started a new segment called "I have a question for you!" and the question was "how do you feel about the word Alcoholic?" On Instagram, one person wrote: "It took a while to be able to openly call myself an alcoholic. I attached very negative and generalized connotations to it until I identified it. Now, I embrace it because it was crucial to me getting sober." Another wrote: I think it keeps people that are sober curious from stepping fully into their sobriety because they think they have to call themselves an Alcoholic . In our society it has a negative connotation. They do not picture the soccer mom at the park with wine in her yeti cup who is still suffering. So, whatever you need to call it . The most important thing is that you don't have to label it at all. You can make a decision based on the results you're getting from drinking alcohol." Thank you all who wrote in! I think the big take away here is that it's all perspective based on the information you have or don't have. In the end, take what you like, and leave the rest. This week's question it tied to the topic of this episode, which is: "Can you still be friends with your old drinking or using friends after you're sober?" Let me know what you think on instagram @arlinaallen So without further delay, please enjoy this episode, and let me know what you think! Guest Contact Info:

I explain how we balance diversification (about 20 stocks, with larger early positions in Apple, Google, and Microsoft), why we avoid frequent selling, and the buy-rules we use (double-digit revenue/earnings growth plus favorable P/E signals). You'll also hear real numbers, recent 1-year and multi-year performance comparisons, lifetime annualized returns that outpaced the total market by roughly two percentage points, and how withdrawals (including my $25k and later $100k) affected personal balances, plus practical guidance on portfolio sizing, member contributions, and why the hands-on learning and friendships make the club worthwhile. Unlock the secrets to building your landscaping business and personal brand in this inspiring episode! You will discover Keith Kalfas' proven strategies for overcoming self-doubt, mastering social media marketing, and creating engaging content—even if you're new to being on camera. Learn practical tips for leveraging tools like CRM software, effective video creation frameworks (such as Keith's POPP method), and the oscillation technique to grow your audience, attract more customers, and boost your confidence. Whether you're just starting out or looking to expand your influence, this episode offers actionable advice on turning your passion into multiple streams of income and fostering genuine connections with your audience—all while staying true to yourself.   What You Will Discover:  Building a Business That Serves You: Keith opens up about his journey: his most profound passion isn't just landscaping, it's helping others break free from scarcity mindsets, overcome self-limiting beliefs, and launch their own businesses for financial independence. He reflects on how he's helped thousands start and grow landscaping businesses.   Social Media Secrets & The POPP Method: The episode dives into Keith's success with social media and how it became a secondary, gratifying business. He unveils the POPP Method (“Passion Over Pressure to Peacock”), which helped his videos reach tens of thousands—even millions—of viewers, regardless of background or resources.   Techniques to Boost Engagement: Listen in for practical advice on making dynamic and compelling videos, including Keith's “oscillation method” (mixing high and low energy), using your unique strengths, and reading the room so your content is engaging without going overboard.   Humanizing Your Brand: Keith explains the importance of showing your personality—even a little eccentricity—to make your brand memorable, build trust, and attract more customers. He gives examples of mixing humor or high energy with professionalism to connect with viewers on a real, human level.   "My truest passion isn't actually even running my own landscaping business. It's helping other people overcome self-limiting beliefs and blocks and get out of a poverty scarcity-stricken mindset so they can take charge of their lives and start their own business and be their own boss and become financially independent and grow their self-worth, right?"— Keith Kalfas   Episode Overview:  00:02:02 – 00:05:26 | Keith's Mission: Helping You Break Through Limiting Beliefs Keith gets personal about his journey, sharing that his passion isn't just about running his own landscaping business but about truly helping others overcome self-limiting beliefs. Having helped thousands start their own businesses, he's focused on guiding others to break free from poverty mindsets and achieve financial independence. He also addresses his own challenges with “imposter syndrome,” explaining that true fulfillment for him comes from teaching, content creation, and empowering others through social media, rather than growing a massive landscaping empire himself. 00:05:26 – 00:07:29 | The POPP Method for Social Media Success  Keith invites you to consider building your own brand through platforms like YouTube or a podcast, tackling the everyday worries of oversaturation and lack of confidence on camera. Introducing the POPP method—Passion Over Pressure to Peacock—he emphasizes that anyone, regardless of their background, can generate impressive engagement. Keith explains how channeling genuine passion, rather than worrying about appearances or social status, leads to authentic content that resonates and gets results. 00:07:29 – 00:08:29 | Harnessing Energy and Audience Engagement Online  He discusses how using dynamic oscillation—shifting between high and low energy—can multiply your social media engagement. Keith provides examples from his personal journey, where applying these methods turned his ordinary videos into viral hits with millions of views. 00:08:57 – 00:10:48 | Real-Life Lessons: Confidence, Presence, and the Fine Line of Passion  Keith shares a story about winning a karaoke competition by being authentically passionate, even if not the most technically skilled. He reflects on the “thin line between genius and lunatic,” describing how fully committing to your unique strengths and quirks can be your superpower if carefully balanced and kept in check through continual feedback. 00:11:14 – 00:14:54 | Embracing Uniqueness and Turning Up the Volume—Your Way  Using relatable anecdotes about singing, dancing, and employing eccentricity, Keith encourages listeners to discover their authentic selves and then dial up those unique qualities. He stresses not to imitate others but to focus on your own strengths, using them to create content that's true to you. Reading feedback and responding to it is key to finding the balance between engaging and over-the-top. 00:14:54 – 00:16:18 | Feedback, Confidence, and Layered Awareness  Keith explores the importance of building confidence in small increments by using feedback to refine your approach. He implores listeners to build self-awareness, adjust their energy, and act in ways that are appropriate to the content, setting, and audience—using oscillation to keep engagement high while maintaining professionalism. 00:17:37 – 00:21:19 | Authenticity, Humor, and Timing: Know When to Turn It Up  Through playful stories about vlogging at Walmart and suggesting humorous ad concepts to a team of financial advisors, Keith illustrates the value of time, place, and appropriateness in content creation. He reminds listeners that even professionals can show their human side with well-timed humor or enthusiasm, strengthening their brand identity. 00:21:19 – 00:22:26 | Free Guides and Defining Your Superpower in Content Creation  Keith transitions to announce his new free resources, including a “How to Create Social Media Videos with Your Smartphone” guide and a framework to help define your personal niche and uncover your “superpower.” He encourages listeners to comment if they are interested in learning how to become an influencer, market their business, or monetize their personal brand online.   Key Takeaways   Build Multiple Income Streams - Leverage skills to create supplemental revenue sources, such as content creation and social media, for financial freedom. My guest today is Dr. Hector — a psychiatrist who specializes in helping people heal from addiction, PTSD, anxiety, and depression through a trauma-informed approach. He blends neuroscience, medication, and therapy with nutrition and lifestyle tools to support whole-person healing.    What I love about his work is that it's not just clinical — it's deeply compassionate. He helps people understand how their brain and body work together so they can build resilience, recover from addiction, and truly heal from the inside out.   He shares why most people relapse not because of willpower, but because trauma remains unresolved. From the role of GABA in calming the nervous system to how EMDR helps reprocess trauma, this episode is packed with practical tools and compassionate wisdom for anyone on the healing path.   Before we jump in, I have a new segment, called “A question for you!” Today I want to know how you feel about the word “Alcoholic”.    I was interviewed on another podcast today and the host told me he thought it was a shame label. If you know me even a little bit, you'll know that the way I define it - it's a badge of honor, but also, it doesn't matter to me what you call yourself, as long as you get the support you need to heal and break free from addiction. In this episode of the Friends in Beauty Podcast, I'm opening up about something that isn't talked about enough in our industry — the not-so-pretty side of meeting your mentors.I recently hosted my first event for someone else, and it reminded me how much I love community, connection, and growth. I'm so grateful for all the beautiful opportunities that keep flowing my way. But as much as I love highlighting the positive moments, I also believe it's important to share the other side — the experiences that challenge us and teach us valuable lessons. In this episode, I talk about the moments when meeting people you admire doesn't go as you imagined. From unexpected interactions with mentors to disappointing experiences with people I once looked up to, I share how those moments taught me about discernment, boundaries, and the importance of staying grounded in who I am.I still believe in mentorship and community with all my heart, but I've learned that admiration without discernment can lead to disappointment. Everyone we meet, no matter their status or achievements, is human. And sometimes, those uncomfortable experiences are exactly what we need to grow stronger and more self-aware.

Today, we are thrilled to welcome back Dr. Devin Duval, OD, FCOVD. Dr. Duval is an optometrist with advanced residency training in pediatrics, vision therapy, and vision rehabilitation. He is a Fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (FCOVD) and a member of the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association (NORA). As an associate professor at Rocky Mountain University and one of only a few optometrists in Utah with this specific expertise, he specializes in helping patients with post-concussion vision problems, strabismus, and other complex visual conditions. In this episode, Dr. Devin Duval returns to the Concussion Coach Podcast for an in-depth discussion on Syntonics and other vision-related aspects of concussion recovery. What is Syntonics? Dr. Duval explains that Syntonics is the application of selective light frequencies to the eyes to treat various vision conditions. It works by balancing the autonomic nervous system, helping patients move out of a chronic "fight or flight" (sympathetic) state and into a "rest and digest" (parasympathetic) state. How It Works: Patients are tested to determine the specific colored filters they need. They then use these prescribed glasses for about 20 minutes a day, looking at a full-spectrum light source like the sky. Treatment typically lasts 1-2 months.Syntonics vs. Other Colored Glasses: Dr. Duval distinguishes between "band-aid" colored glasses for symptom relief (like FL-41 for migraines) and Syntonic glasses, which are a targeted treatment intended to fix the underlying problem.Practical Tips for Listeners:Expanding Visual Fields: Go for walks in open spaces and consciously pay attention to your peripheral vision.Screen Use & Blue Light: The 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds) is crucial. Blue light filters are generally recommended for concussion patients, but quality varies.Computer Work: Reduce visual clutter, avoid fluorescent lighting, and consider a "flicker-free" monitor. High-resolution 4K monitors can sometimes be overstimulating.Finding Help: Dr. Duval emphasizes that many "untreatable" visual problems are treatable with the right specialist. He encourages listeners to seek out a qualified professional. The episode is a powerful reminder that there is hope and help available for persistent post-concussion visual symptoms.Resources MentionedTo Find a Syntonics or Vision Therapy Provider:College of Syntonic Optometry: Find a doctor trained in Syntonics on their website. https://csovision.org/find-a-practitioner/COVD (College of Optometrists in Vision Development): Use the "Locate a Doctor" feature on covd.org and click the button to find a board-certified vision therapy specialist. Do you ever find yourself hustling for your worth or looking for it in all the wrong places? You are not alone. Too many girls and women are lost and wandering, endlessly seeking security and approval in places and things that never satisfy. In this episode, Brittany Maher, Cassandra Speer, and Allie Smith talk about how our value doesn't rise and fall with opinions or performance — it's anchored in the unshakable truth of Jesus. We pray that you will be encouraged and equipped to live with unshakable confidence in who God says you are and stop measuring your worth by the world's ever-changing metric system.   Episode Topics: Knowing your value in Christ changes everything. True worth is found in God's word, not in worldly standards. We often attach our identities to counterfeit measures. The journey to discovering true worth is ongoing. Confronting the lies you have believed is essential to embracing our true identity. People-pleasing can lead to a cycle of seeking approval in areas where we weren't meant to. We must identify and pull the weeds in our lives to walk in our true worth and calling. Our past mistakes do not determine our worth. The comparison spiral gets louder after divorce, and it can feel like your body is sounding an alarm you can't switch off. I talk about why your brain compares in the first place, how that survival tool gets misapplied to emotional pain, and what to do when your nervous system treats a hard feeling as a life-or-death threat. Using clear examples from everyday life and social media, I'll unpack the cultural scripts that tell you a “real family” looks one way and success only counts if it fits a narrow mold. You'll learn a simple, repeatable practice to reclaim your peace. You'll hear how facts are neutral, stories add emotional overwhelm, and the body calms when you return to what is actually true. I also talk about the myth of perfection, how memory glamorizes the past, and why redefining family, happiness, and stability on your own terms helps you let go of shame. If your feed is full of highlight reels and your mind keeps whispering you're behind, you'll leave with grounded tools to stop the spiral and a gentler way to relate to your thoughts. Think of it as a nervous system reboot for post-divorce healing: less panic, more clarity, and a kinder voice inside your head. Ready to step out of comparison and into your own definition of enough? Whether it's the fear of showing up online, raising your rates, hosting your first class, or being truly seen, I want to help you understand how to stop letting fear take over and start taking your power back.As we step into the last quarter of the year, I've been reflecting a lot, not just on what I've accomplished, but on the things that have been holding me back. Before I plan my goals for next year, I always take time to look at what's standing in my way. And this time, that led me to a powerful concept called interviewing your fear.In this episode, I share what it really means to interview your fear, how to sit with it, ask it questions, and uncover what's really behind it. I talk about my own experiences with fear, from worrying if people would show up to my first class, to realizing that some of the fears I carry weren't even mine to begin with. They were passed down from others. You'll hear how I've learned to shift from confronting fear to getting curious about it. Because fear doesn't always go away. It just needs to be understood, acknowledged, and then moved through with compassion.

After 25 years in the restaurant industry, from Del Taco to Pieology, he shifted to franchise consulting to help others avoid the mistakes he had witnessed others make. He covers why franchises provide systems, support, and franchisee networks that make them safer than starting from scratch, plus specific industries that appeal to healthcare professionals: IV drip therapy, senior care, medical billing, and home-based options. He works with 600 franchises across all industries, helps with budget planning and territory selection, and offers services at no cost to clients. Podcast Summary:Bethany Lewis welcomes Andy Ellison to the Concussion Coach Podcast to share his profound journey with brain injury.  A Colorado native, he has an impressive background in finance, having co-founded and served as CEO of Mountain View Bank of Commerce for 16 years before it was sold. He is now the CFO of the Boone Heart Institute.Andy begins his story by recounting how a seemingly minor concussion in April 2021, sustained by walking into a doorframe, led to debilitating symptoms like an inability to look at screens, severe fatigue, and light and noise sensitivity.A CT scan ordered by his doctor revealed an unexpected and incidental finding: a brain tumor in his left ventricle. This shocking diagnosis began a multi-year journey of monitoring the tumor. The conversation delves into the challenges Andy faced in his high-level career, including how he navigated telling his employer and colleagues, and the blessing in disguise of learning to delegate. He shares powerful insights on:Managing Identity: Using the "just behave" theory to handle frustration and the concept of separating his life into "before" and "after" to stop comparing himself to his old self. The Power of Gratitude: Actively practicing gratitude to reframe difficult situations.Advice for Caregivers: The importance of believing the person with the injury and separating frustration with the situation from feelings toward the caregiver.Using Humor: He even shares his "brain tumor card" as a lighthearted way to explain cognitive hiccups.Maintaining Hope: He references the "Stockdale Paradox"—confronting the brutal reality of your situation while maintaining unwavering faith that you will prevail in the end.Andy candidly discusses the symptoms he still manages today, including an inability to watch videos, bad days that require adjusted expectations, and ongoing fatigue. He ends with a powerful reason for sharing his story: to stop hiding his struggles and to offer himself as a resource and role model for others on a similar path.Resources & Tools Mentioned:Brainwaves App: Brainwave: 37 Binaural Series App Andy uses for relaxation and symptom management. (Note: This is a popular app; link provided for reference.)The "Gap and the Gain" Concept: From the book by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy. Focus on how far you've come (the gain) rather than how far you are from your goal (the gap). The Stockdale Paradox: From Jim Collins' book "Good to Great." The concept of retaining faith that you will prevail in the end, while simultaneously confronting the most brutal facts of your current reality.Ram Dass: A spiritual teacher and author who spoke about his own transformative experience after a stroke. Andy referenced his idea of dividing life into "before and after."Cognitive FX: The clinic where Andy underwent intensive therapy and received the fMRI that showed his tumor was growing. https://www.cognitivefxusa.com/Bethany's Free Guide: "The 5 Best Ways to Support Your Loved One Dealing with a Concussion." In this powerful conversation, investigative journalist Shoshana Walter exposes the dark underbelly of America's rehab industry. Drawing from her eight years of research for Rehab: An American Scandal, she reveals how court-ordered rehab programs have exploited vulnerable people by sending them to work unpaid in dangerous jobs — all under the guise of “treatment.” We discuss: The shocking origins of these labor-based rehabs and how they became so widespread Why our mainstream treatment system often fails people — and in some cases, increases overdose risk Real-life stories of individuals like Chris, April, and Wendy that illustrate both the broken system and the resilience of those fighting for change How loopholes and lack of oversight allow unethical rehabs to thrive Practical ways families can identify quality treatment programs and avoid predatory ones Despite the heavy subject, this episode ends with hope: a growing community of advocates and storytellers pushing for systemic change. Before we jump in, I just wanted to give you a little update on what I've been up to, and share a new meeting I'll be hosting.  After creating and teaching a course called “Inner Compass”, I was feeling super burned out, so I decided to take some time off. I called it my "Self-Care Summer". I didn't do any new interviews, take on any new clients, or do any social media.  It was a time to reset, heal and think about the direction of my work. My guiding thoughts were centered around one question: "What does God want for my life?" I was practicing total surrender, and I gotta tell you, it was a leap of faith, but then something interesting happened. Two podcasters published interviews I gave, and I realized something. I truly love sharing what I've learned in recovery. It really fills my heart with joy. That's why I've been doing the Sobriety Reset series for those who are coming back from another “Day 1”. Also I was invited to partner with OpenRecovery, a free app centered around recovery, to start a new community there. This means I'll be hosting free meetings that will make 12 principals accessible to my fellow skeptics, by providing a path around common obstacles.   I'll leave links in the show notes so you can download the app, and there will be announcements for the launch date. I've been wanting to host a meeting since I published the book, and OpenRecovery is providing me with the platform! I'm really excited about it and I hope you'll join me. One last thing,  if you enjoy this episode, it would mean the world to me if you leave a review on Apple Podcasts. It might surprise you to know that according to the analytics, less than 1% of our audience will actually leave a review. By leaving a review, it helps others who are suffering to find the podcast and get the life saving resources they need to get and stay sober. You can even think of leaving a review as an act of service! So thank you so much for your support! So without further delay, please enjoy this episode, and let me know what you think!

Be Unmessablewith: The Podcast hosted by Josselyne Herman-Saccio

In this amazing episode on the Be Unmessablewith podcast, I sit down with David Crownson, who went from a Comic Book Dream to a Disney Deal. What do you do when your vision feels impossible, your bank account is empty, and your dream is literally sitting in the rain, soaked, damaged, and ready to break you? Most people quit. David Crownson didn't.Back in 2016, David had an idea so wild it sounded like a mash-up of history class and Netflix: What if Harriet Tubman was also a demon slayer? Armed with martial arts, supernatural strength, and the courage of her true story, she battles vampires, werewolves, and the forces of darkness to lead her people to freedom. That spark of a vision became the comic book Harriet Tubman: Demon Slayer. And today? It is on its way to being a TV show with Disney. But it was not an overnight “success story.” It was years of rejection, shipping disasters (think 600 soggy comic books returned from the post office), car rides fueled only by gas money and hope, and moments where walking away seemed like the only sane option. Here's what you'll hear in this episode: The “gas money” breakdown that turned into a breakthrough (and a sellout at Kevin Smith's comic shop) How David's biggest mistake ruined comics and angry backers, became the moment that built trust with his audienceThe leadership shift that changes everything: why true leaders don't talk down or up to others, but create the space of excellence shoulder to shoulder How a homemade teaser shot in a friend's barn during the pandemic opened the door to DisneyWhy you don't need millions of people to say yes, you just need the right oneWhat I love about David's story is how clearly it shows the shift from reaction to creation. When he was in survival mode, just hustling for gas money, life looked heavy and hopeless. But when he stood in the possibility of excellence, everything changed. Magic showed up. Doors opened. The impossible became real. That is what being Unmessablewith looks like. It is not about being tough. It is about staying true to your vision when everything around you is screaming, “give up.”If you are an artist, entrepreneur, or anyone chasing a dream that feels too big, David's story will remind you: -Do not give up on yourself.- Do not mistake the clouds for the sky.- And remember, before the breakthrough, it almost always feels heaviest.Stay connected to your vision. Keep going through the clouds. The blue sky, and maybe even Disney, are waiting on the other side.
