Legend has it that Calvin Coolidge slept 11 hours a day during his presidency. Scholars today often mock Coolidge for being a passive, ineffective leader. Yet, the fact remains that this reticent man from New England rose to become one of America's most popular presidents during one of the nation's most dynamic eras. In this episode, we examine Calvin Coolidge unlikely rise as the 30th president of the United States. Few presidents have been as mocked and vilified as Warren G. Harding, but few have examined the difficult circumstances he faced upon entering office -- an economic depression, social unrest, and violent extremism. During the 1920 election, Harding had pledged to address these problems and lead America into an era of "normalcy." In this episode, we examine how successful was in fulfilling that promise. Sean Comer and Mark Radulich present our The Great Gatsby 2013 Movie Review! The Great Gatsby is a 2013 American historical romantic drama film based on the 1925 novel of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The film was co-written and directed by Baz Luhrmann and stars an ensemble cast consisting of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Amitabh Bachchan, and Elizabeth Debicki. Filming took place from September to December 2011 in Australia, with a $105 million net production budget. The film follows the life and times of millionaire Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio) and his neighbor Nick Carraway (Maguire) who recounts his interactions with Gatsby amid the riotous parties of the Jazz Age on Long Island in New York.A polarizing film among critics, The Great Gatsby received both praise and criticism for its visual style, direction, screenplay, performances, soundtrack, and its interpretation of the source material. Audiences responded more positively, and Fitzgerald's granddaughter praised the film, stating "Scott would have been proud." As of 2023, it is Luhrmann's highest-grossing film, grossing over $353 million worldwide. At the 86th Academy Awards, the film won in both of its nominated categories: Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsoFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76

Matt Crawford speaks with author Alan Prendergast about his book, Gangbuster: One Man's Battle Against Crime, Corruption, and The Klan. Denver during the roaring 1920's was a corrupt town from stem to stern. Rookie District Attorney Philip Van Cise wanted to change that, and he would end up taking on organized crime, corruption on every governmental level and the Ku Klux Klan. Utilizing cutting edge technology and even reaching out to private donors to fund his crusade, Van Cise was truly ahead of his time. Why then have so few heard of him? Read this book and find out just what a miscarriage of justice that really is!

Midnight in Cairo: The Divas of Egypt's Roaring '20s - Dr. Raphael Cormack Smithsonian Associates, The Not Old Better Show Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Art of Living interview series, our guest today is Dr. Raphael Cormack. Dr Raphael Cormack has written a new book, Midnight in Cairo: The Divas of Egypt's Roaring '20s and will be introducing and reading a section from his book, which is excellent, getting great reviews and absolutely a winner! One of the world's greatest 20th-century cosmopolitan cities, Cairo was a magnet for the ambitious and talented. During the 1920s and 30s, a lively music, theater, film, and cabaret scene flourished, dominated by women—as stars but also as impresarios, entrepreneurs, owners, and promoters of the arts industry. Buffeted by crosswinds of colonialism and nationalism, conservatism and liberalism, religious and secular values, patriarchy and feminism, this new generation of celebrities offered a new vision for women in Egypt and throughout the Middle East. Raphael Cormack, an award-winning editor and translator, pulls back the curtain on these boundary-breaking women in entertainment. Dr. Cormack unveils the rich histories of independent, enterprising figures like vaudeville star Rose al-Youssef who launched one of Cairo's most important literary newspapers. That was Dr. Raphael Cormack reading from his new book, Midnight in Cairo: The Divas of Egypt's Roaring '20s Dr. Carmack will be presenting at Smithsonian Associates program, entitled, Midnight in Cairo: The Divas of Egypt's Roaring '20s, May 20, and we have him today. Please join me in welcoming Smithsonian Asssociate, Dr. Raphael Cormack. My thanks to Dr. Raphael Cormack for joining us today.
