What if the Chernobyl disaster was not an accident, but a planned event constructed to cover up a very expensive Russian military disaster? Today we are talking about a conspiracy theory that states a very powerful Russian politician orchestrated the Chernobyl disaster to cover up the fact that his personal project, the Duga Radar Detection System, a project he spent seven billion government dollars on, was a total and complete failure. Is it possible that someone could be so evil? I think we are in agreement that it is. The question is, did it happen?Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/dark-hearts-with-stacy-lee-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Meet Ram Devineni, the creator of India’s first female superhero - Priya’s Shakti. When Ram published the first comic book in 2014 at the Mumbai Comic Con, he didn’t expect his protagonist - a gangrape survivor, who overcomes her fear and stigma, to become such a viral hit, not just in India but globally as well.  The poignant image of Priya riding bravely on her tiger and friend, Saahas ended up denoting a symbolic crusader against gender violence.  Since then, Priya’s Shakti has been honoured by UN Women as a ‘Gender Equality Champion’, and has been covered in countless international and national publications such as The Huffington Post, Forbes, The Guardian etc. The subsequent comic series tackled equally pressing issues like acid attacks and sex trafficking.  The latest one, Priya’s Mask, released this month highlights the issue of children coping through this pandemic. Along with an animated short film with actors Vidya Balan and Mrunal Thakur voicing the characters. As a documentary filmmaker, Ram had, through his company, Rattapallax produced The Russian Woodpecker, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and later directed The Karma Killings, based on the horrific Nithari murders. This Episode explore three stories of cold war era radio in the USSR: Soviet Radio Jammers, the Russian ‘Woodpecker' and the Soviet Radio Hooligans We meet with Russian broadcaster Vladimir Raevsky to talk about radio jamming in cold war era Soviet Union. As East and West super powers square up to each with nuclear weapons, a parallel invisible war is being fought in the airwaves. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent on broadcasting propaganda and music into the Soviet Union - and on attempting to block them from being heard. Stephen tells the strange story of the ‘Russian Woodpecker', a dystopian broadcasting station near the Chernobyl nuclear reactor and alleged attempts to brainwash the West using radar. BBC Russian Arts correspondant Alex Kan, sits in a London cafe and tells of the brave young ‘Radio hooligans' who broadcast their own individual pirate radio shows during his youth in the USSR. I also looked at the BBC's experiments to measure the state of the oceans. This is not the Russian Woodpecker but it is a radar system. Dick Klees looks at the growth of home computer club.  The programme concludes with a feature on Blue Danube Radio, on 102.2 MHz. Jim Lee is our guest tonight and it is going to be an eye-opener. As promised, we will we be touching on the controversial topic of emergent 5G technology. But to add some more spice to Jim's appearance, I wanted to talk about a new dramatized HBO miniseries on the Chernobyl meltdown that is coming out soon. I thought it may be a good time to get some background on the Russian Woodpecker radar system and the events leading up to the 1986 meltdown, in Ukraine. This will take up about an hour of the show, but we should be able to end with some calls from the audience. This week, Danny dons the high-falutin beret of chin-stroking and Sam pulls on the lofty turtleneck of deep thought to review two films that the vast majority of the human race will never see. The Forbidden Room is the latest feature from Canadian director Guy Maddin, who has assembled an eclectic collection of melodramatic short stories nestled within one another like a Russian doll. Fragmented, theatrical, absurd - the film will be an acquired taste for most audiences. But not our extraordinarily discerning listeners. Those guys will love it. Also reviewed this week: The Russian Woodpecker, a concise but sweeping documentary that follows a young Ukrainian artist as he attempts to unravel the mystery of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. It has everything you could want from a documentary - animation, archive footage, spectacular landscapes, interviews, conspiracies, performance art, a captivatingly weird protagonist, and a thick atmosphere of gradual, engulfing doom. The episode also contains ruminations on the "big nommers" at the Golden Globes, James Franco's attempts to make a good film about a bad film, the DJs inside Gandalf's pantomime horse, and, of course, Shia LaBoeuf. PS Sorry this one is late everyone. Sam was tasked with uploading it to the internet but his hands were trembling so violently with anticipation for The Force Awakens, not to mention Christmas, that it took him a full two days to control himself sufficiently to do the necessary button pushing. Won't happen again. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
