Kia ora e te whānau. When Adrian MacDonald moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, he didn't do it for the trails, he did it for love and the chance to run hills at altitude. With a background in road and track, MacDonald didn't hit the trails until the pandemic canceled races and he thought he'd try his hand at an FKT. The rest, as they say, is history. Andrew and Matt speak to Adrian about his back-to-back wins at the historic Leadville 100, what it took to get him there, his road, er, trail to Western States, and just how much of a nuisance Sam Harvey is to race the 100-mile distance *Spoiler Alert* exactly how much you'd think he is. Kiwi endurance runner Sam Harvey is at it again, just weeks after claiming he was done with ultra back yard running "for now". Picked to be a favourite at the Big Dog's Backyard Ultra in Tennessee last month, he stunned the crowd when he pulled out after 91 hours, 73 kilometres short of the world record. The event is gruelling - with competitors running a 6.7km loop every hour, only finishing when there's one person left able to run. Sam is competing in the Arrowtown Backyard Ultra tomorrow and speaks to Susana Lei'ataua. [embed] https://players.brightcove.net/6093072280001/default_default/index.html?videoId=6340845205112
Christchurch ultra-runner Sam Harvey has stopped short of making history at Big Dog's Backyard Ultra in Tennessee. When we checked in yesterday he had been running 6.7 kilometre loops on the hour, every hour for days. Out of 75 starters in this world champs Harvey made it into the top 10. Today we were joined by a Kiwi amongst the elite of world athletes. Sam is an Backyard Ultra Marathon runner, a race where runners have an hour to complete a circuit. They must repeat the loop hour on hour there is one man left standing. These races can go for over four days non stop. Sam tells us what he puts his body through to compete in these races. Sam Harvey is an endurance athlete, coach, New Zealand champion + record holder, and tied the World record before ultimately assisting in the breaking of it for backyard ultras. With a remarkable record of 677km, 101 loops, and non-stop competition for over four days – Sam is regarded as a pioneer of the backyard ultras, coaching himself & others toward unknown, boundless heights of this running discipline. Coming off the world-record-breaking Australian Masters Ultra event, Sam went on to win the Krayzie mid-winter backyard ultra in NZ just 10 days later – clocking in close to 1,000km in two weeks. Running and raising money for I Am Hope, a youth mental health charity. Next in his sights are, among many things I'm sure, the individual Backyard Ultra world champs in October (21), coming up for Sam – in his second home in the US (Tennessee)!! Speak your dreams, achieve the impossible, and walk tall in spite of those who doubt you. Sam Harvey finishes our series exploring the book of Philippians. In this closing passage, Paul exhorts the church in Philippi to be intentional about what they think about and encourages the church with his example of contentment.
All throughout the gospels we read of Jesus praying - he prays frequently, regularly and consistently. As we follow Jesus we are called to a life of prayer. It's the key place of connection with God and from this place we're transformed to bear incredible fruit: love, joy and peace! In this talk Sam encourages us to live lives of prayer and gives some helpful strategies as we walk int he ways of Jesus.
In June 2022 Sam Harvey from Christchurch came painfully close to breaking the world record for ultra distance running, after running pretty much non-stop for more than four days.Sam ran for 101 hours and covered 677km at an event in Queensland. His heart and mind are so unbreakable that he was FORCED by organizers to pull out of the race after he fell over and collapsed on the course.Sam is a fascinating guy with an unbreakable mindset so this episode is so much more than a podcast about running. For most listeners, as well as getting to know a bit more about this average ordinary guy who is on a mission to redefine what the human mind and body is capable of, most of us will get to learn a bit more about the fringe running events known as backyard ultras. To learn more about CurraNZ (the exceptional black currant supplement that Sam and I talk about) you can check them out here:https://curranz.co.nz/Thanks to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode.I know I'm supposed to say how much I like them because of our professional arrangement, but I genuinely was a fan of their products even before they approached me to sponsor the podcast. Episode 39! I sat down with Sam Harvey! Sam recently ran 101 loops at the Dead Cow Gully Back Yard Ultra Marathon equating to 676.7km of basically non stop running becoming the assist to the world record of 102 loops... Even more, then backed it up a week later with an insane 43loops (288.1km) and winning Krayzie Mid Winter BYU. It was an absolute pleasure to do this episode to get a real insight into what it took to achieve such a feat of endurance and to get a little back ground into Sam's trial and tribulation throughout his life from mental health bouts and basic car troubles... I hope you find some value in this weeks episode because I know I did. Enjoy the episode! On today's show, Martin Devlin previews the third Ashes cricket test in Leeds, which is sure to be tasty after the enthralling second test which featured a narrow Australian win, a contentious stumping call on England's Jonny Bairstow, and MCC members being suspended. AAP's Scott Bailey joins the show to discuss all the drama. Plus, Supercars icon Mark 'Larko' Larkham delves into the specifics of Shane van Gisbergen's NASCAR win and how he adjusted so well to a foreign car, NRL journalist Brad Walter updates us on the players' media boycott, and ultra-runner Sam Harvey talks about his treacherous running adventures. All that and much more!
Kia ora e te whānau. This week Eugene and Matt sit down to speak with Sam Harvey fresh off his return from Dead Cow Gully. Sam was competing at the Australian Backyard Masters and managed a world record equalling 101 laps over four days and 677-odd kilometres. We talk to Sam about being (in his words) unreasonable, and what he felt going in, versus what he learned going out. Sam is (again, by his own admission) a fighter, and we talk about this desire to scrap with literally everyone and everything with his burgeoning sense of development of self and transcendence through days and days of pain and connection on a deeper level with others on the course. Sam discusses what made him stop, and why it's eating him. We hear of his excitement at the upcoming Big's Backyard in Tennessee and we (in our most avuncular manner) attempt to dissuade Sam from competing in the Krazie K's backyard a week after Dead Cow Gully. *Spoiler Alert* the little bastard went and won it with 42 laps. Best Enjoyed Running.

Tom Theobald paints a picture of small town life gleaned from The Niwot Tribune. Tom and Laura chat about pace and the perspective shift that happens when you work with bees."Another entry appeared for June 22, 1939. All it said was, "Sam Harvey and A.L. Newell motored to Sterling last Saturday." My first thought was, what a quaint way to describe a trip. When was the last time you motored anywhere? But then I realized that it was really more than quaint, it reflected a way of life, a pace from the past, a view of things that I have always found attractive and seductive."CREDITSProducer: Laura TylerAuthor: Tom TheobaldEditor: Andy SchwarzMusic: "Americana" and "Sonorus" by Mr Smith are licensed under CC by 4.0Logo Design: Janet Cerretani
