Jesus came to ransom mankind from the world's darkness and to transfer humanity into His glorious Kingdom of Light and Love, which will be in Heaven with Him and the Father forever. Lucifer – a.k.a. Satan God's adversary – has cloaked the darkness of this sin-riddled world with a false illumination and is leading multitudes into his counterfeit kingdom – which will not only not deny them the false promises of paradise that are held in his lies, but will lead its deceived citizens to an eternity in Hell's abode. This false light or illumination is being propagated through what has become known as “The New Age” which can be called a religion – but it is more of a darkened mindset that deceives its victims into believing that they have actually reached a higher plain of being – leading to godhood and utopia. And this demonic counterfeit is not only captivating the world – but it has also infiltrated the Church, where it is working hand-in-hand with Ecumenism, and producing a company of people who call themselves “Christian” but who are imposters and devoid of any genuine eternal life security. For what they call “believing in Jesus” is really a superficial mindset that even the demons possess – and which they tailor to fit their own self-centered desires and elevation.Testing every spirit is not just an option for the people of God – it is a necessity! And all the more as the time grows nearer!Support the Show.Visit our website: https://agapelightministries.com/

This week's episode dives deep into one of the most challenging philosophical questions humanity has grappled with for centuries: the problem of natural evil. Hosted by Vince Vitale the show delves into the complexities of evil that seem inherent to the fabric of our world – earthquakes, famines, diseases – phenomena that sometimes shake our faith in a benevolent God. We're joined by two brilliant minds with divergent perspectives. Sharon Dirckx, a renowned speaker, author, and Christian apologist, returns to Unbelievable? and brings her insights rooted in faith and intellect. With a background in brain imaging from the University of Cambridge, Sharon's latest book, "Broken Planet," offers a compelling exploration of the theological implications of natural disasters and diseases. Also returning as a guest to Unbelievable is Stephen Woodford, the influential voice behind the Rationality Rules YouTube channel. With a focus on dismantling religious and supernatural beliefs, Stephen brings a rationalist perspective to the table. #evil #naturalevil #pandemic #Satan #God #theodicy #disaster #tsunami SOCIAL LINKS: Twitter: https://twitter.com/unbelievablefe Facebook: / https://facebook.com/premierunbelievable Instagram: / https://instagram.com/premierunbelievable Tik Tok: / https://tiktok.com/@premier.unbelievable • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate

If you're not in the Word of God, there is ZERO percent chance you'll live your purpose. There is only ONE way to defeat the lies of Satan: God's Word. Reading God's Word is true. It's FOR YOU. Scripture corrects, teaches, prepares, equips, and it contains the greatest news in the world. The question for us is — are we letting it truly change us? Are we willing to accept the correction? Or are we morphing God's truth into our own version of “truth”? God wants to reveal himself to you through his Word.

Why Is There Evil In The World

God's plan for salvation and eternal life involves a confrontation with evil. Our confrontation with through a 7 step program of repentance, forgiveness, overcoming, spiritual discernment. Then the final two steps are direct intervention by Christ, and destruction of the source of evil. But Why Is There Evil in the World? We all know and acknowledge there is evil in the world but how did it get there? Was it a mistake, or fatal flaw? Some point to the presence of evil in the world as their reason for disbelief in God. If a good God exists why would He allow evil to continue? If there is no God and we are just products of evolution then calling something evil makes no sense either.  All events that happen are just part of our fight for survival as individuals or as a species in an evolutionary process. We murder, lie, steal, in our personal or communal drive to survive. We commit adultery to spread or perpetuate our DNA... etc. If the struggle for survival is the only true purpose we have… and then I murder a rival so I can steal his food and survive… then I have not committed evil… I have fulfilled my purpose in life. We could even say that murder serves a good purpose in weeding out the weak leaving more resources for the strong.Evolution, survival of the fittest, and materialism are a way of thinking that can be used to justify horrific atrocities… if you do not believe in God what basis do you have for saying one type of action good… and another type of action evil. What About People Who Believe in God?Those who believe there is a God… who believe He created and sustains all things… also have to answer questions about where evil comes from: 1. If God is the creator of all things then is He responsible for creating evil? – therefore meaning He had evil within Himself and is the ultimate source of evil.2. If God is all powerful and sustains all things does God also sustain evil? – because He causes or allows it to continue is He is ultimately responsible...We know these two propositions are not true… but they are reasonable questions that deserve an answer. Did God Create Evil?God did not create evil… murder, lying stealing, war… but He did create the OPPORTUNITY for evil because he allows free will within His creation. He  made human beings with minds capable of thinking our own thoughts and making our own choices. Before creating man God created other spiritual beings with minds and freewill [commonly called angels]. He made them beautiful, with amazing gifts and talents. These spiritual beings were there with God when He created earth…. He gave some of them tasks to perform to prepare the earth for something very special yet too come  in His creation plan.At some point a large portion of these beings decided they didn't agree with what God had planned. Perhaps it was the idea that He was planning to create other spirit beings (spirit born human beings) who would, when completed and matured, be superior to angels Hebrews 2:5-8, 1 Corinthians 6:3. Whatever the reason was, these angels figured things would be better if they were in charge… and a full third of them rebelled against God.Isaiah 14:12-14 evil begins with exercise of free will against God's person, His commands, His authority, His wayThe Rebellion Failed… As It Had ToGod is all powerful, far above all rule any authority, power and dominion. The angel's rebellion never had any hope of success - Luke 10:17-19, Rev 12:3-4Why Didn't God Get Rid of Satan Permanently?God did not destroy the rebellious spirit beings the seraphim and cherubim we call angels… He could have thrown them into the abyss where they could do no harm… instead they were hurled out of heaven and landed KABUMP… on earth. On earth, the fallen and disgraced angels are free to roam the planet alongside human beings… the very ones God is preparing for sonship in the family of God.Revelation 12:9 the rebellious Lucifer brings with Him his way of thinking and infects the minds of human beings.AHA you say! So, once again God appears responsible for the presence of evil in our world! God could have gotten rid of Satan but He didn't… he banished Satan to earth. God could have stopped evil but He didn't. WHY?God's Present Purpose on Earth is Creating Spirit Born ChildrenGod's children are to become like Him in mind, spirit, character… then they receive the full rights of sonship! Our experience with physical children teaches us and important lesson: Our children have some traits they get from us through their DNA, other traits they get from us from our instruction. So it is and will be with the begotten and spirit born children of God. We have may qualities that are like God [created in His likeness], but we are incomplete, immature, in a state of flux… Who we are spiritually is determined by our exercise of free choice… which can be good or bad.Genesis 1:31 Did God create humans with evil built into their very nature? No, God declared His creation is good not evil… that includes human beings who He created.Romans 8:5-10 without the assistance of the holy spirit and God's word we don't know how to make good choices. Note: the vast majority of those who have ever lived have never had access to the understanding of truth and the holy spirit… that is the great question we address through a good understanding of the Great White Throne Judgment… the message of the final holy day of the biblical festivals [Last Great Day].Matthew 26:41 the flesh, human nature, is not evil… but it is weak. God might ask you to do certain things and your flesh doesn't want to do them because the flesh is wired to think first and foremost about its own survival. For example, God commands us to fast on the Day of Atonement. The spirit might be willing but the flesh says “whoa, what are you talking about”, that's crazy. Eating and drinking are essential to survival and top priority for the flesh. Fasting is an exercise of choosing to rule over the flesh through the spirit. The priorities of the spirit are not the priorities of the flesh. In this way your flesh can be an working against the spiritual, an enemy of God… but still not be evil. For example; rabbits might eat up all the nice lettuce I planted … but I don't consider them evil. That's just what rabbits do. The flesh is simply responding to circumstances the way it was designed to. But for the children of God, the  spirit must rule over the flesh.Ezekiel 28:13-17 in similar manner, the cherubim and seraphim were not created with evil as part of their nature. They were created perfect. But also free to choose John 8:44. Before God gives mortal humans, like you and me, everlasting life He wants to know your heart and mind…. What you will do with that eternal life…. Would you end up just like Lucifer? Would you choose to become the enemy and adversary of God?That is why from the very beginning God has exposed humans to Satan, to the fallen angels, and the evil they promote. We all must choose and there is great suffering as a consequence. We have to hear, weigh and judge the arguments for and against Godly righteousness. These arguments don't always come in the form of words and discussion… but in the form of experience and temptation. “To the one who overcomes I will give the right to eat from the tree of life which is in the paradise of God”.God also exposes those whom he love to adverse conditions for the purpose of testing and perfecting their character by allowing them to suffer. Deuteronomy 8:2-6Note: God may test or lead you into tribulation BUT He does not tempt or lure anyone to sin… Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire [James 1:13-14].Satan is Under a Partial Restraining Order From GodJob 1:6-12 Satan can only do what God allowsLuke 22:31-32 Satan has to ask permission to mess with PeterGod the Father wants all to learn that the only kind of life that really works is the one that He reveals in His word. There is no alternative way that works… and to prove that God lets humanity live out many alternative ways… in this present evil age… and we don't just get a taste, we have to drink the whole bottle down to the dregs. By the end of this evil age humanity will have tried just about every alternative to God's way… and experience its total failure. After that, God will treat the earth to 1,000 years of doing things His way. Free choice will still be allowed but the way of God will be taught… and it will be enforced. But I Already Trust God at His Word Why Must I Suffer? There is a lot we can learn by hearing, being taught and so forth but there are some things that can only be learned by experiencing them. You can tell a toddler that touching a hot stove element means lots of pain… they'll hear the words… they might even believe you… but they won't really understand what the pain of a burned palm is like unless the touch the stove. And for some children that's the only way they will believe.  By believing and trusting in God you are way ahead of most of the world. God will provide you with the faith and spiritual strength you need but you still have to live your life in this present evil age. Hardness in life is part of your preparation to assist Christ during that 1,000 year period and beyond. When endured with patience and faith it prepares you to experience eternity in a successful, joy filled way.[comfort = encouragement] 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 we learn compassion and empathy through the temptations we endure and through suffering… so that we might help others. God plan is for us to join Him in future creative projects in the age to come. Your Personal Confrontation With EvilAt present the great confrontation with evil in our world is being worked out in the lives of individuals… people like you and me. We address evil through repentance, forgiveness, overcoming, spiritual discernment of what is evil… what is good… and what is better! What Comes Next? Is There A Final Solution to Evil?God has a plan... and at a certain time He will switch gears. When Satan was thrown down he was mad… because he knew his time was limited. There is a time limit on this whole experiment of allowing humans to have dominion over the earth with Satan among them. After centuries and millenia of allowing humanity to pursue dead-end paths… after thousands of years of allowing them to be mentally and spiritually dominated by Satan… God is going to turn everything upside down and show humanity what a 1,000 years of living His way looks like. To get that started: 1. God installs a new authority on earth who is good, namely Jesus Christ the Messiah Daniel 7:13-142. Ordains the resurrected firstfruits to assist Him Daniel 7:22, 26-273. Removes one who stirs up evil, namely Satan. Rev 20:1-3 With the influence of Satan completely removed God will demonstrate what a world without evil looks like. Which of course is the point of the Feast of Tabernacles. Then finally all men who have ever lived will arise again to life to see and compare and choose. For most this will be their first opportunity to make an informed choice. Some will choose eternal life and others will choose eternal death. Which of course is the point of the Last Great Day.God did not create evil. He created choice. Would you really have it any other way?Deuteronomy 30:19Choose wisely… Choose Life.

1.   The resurrection means something ground-breaking. In what way? Jesus wants us to redefine what resurrection hope is. The resurrection means something ground-breaking. We have a sense of that intuitively. A transformation has happened, and that means that there is more to the resurrection than meets the eye. Something has changed, something's different to what it was before, but what exactly is it? What is the resurrection? It can't be just the fact that a man comes alive after he's died – it has to be something more than that; that's already happened before… to prove that John gives us the account of Lazarus being raised by Jesus from the dead after 4 days in the tomb…It can't be that it gives us hope for a resurrection – it has to be something more than that; the Jews already had that… Martha says to Jesus, I know we will rise again on the last day.Jesus wants us to redefine what resurrection hope is. 2.   How does Jesus define Resurrection Hope?  "I AM the Resurrection and the Life"John 11Martha then said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.” Jesus *said to her, “Your brother will rise from the dead.” Martha *said to Him, “I know that he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; the one who believes in Me will live, even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”There's a very important transition Jesus makes here; and it can be easy to gloss over. He says: “I am the resurrection and the life; the one who believes in Me will live, even if he dies…”. Nothing out of the ordinary with that; that's in line with what we would think about resurrection: If you die, then you will be brought back to life. But that's not what Jesus is talking about here, because He goes on to say: “Everyone who lives and believes in Me WILL NEVER DIE.” Do you see what He's doing here? He's redefining our idea of life and death. He is the resurrection and the life: “The ones who live and believe in Him have life, even while they are dying… in fact, even if they die, they still have life.” Here's what Jesus is saying when He says, “I am the Resurrection and the Life”: He's saying the Resurrection isn't about coming back from the dead… it's about who He is. He is Life and Life never dies… Life might appear to die, but it cannot be snuffed out, it will prove to be ongoing, to be still alive, to be eternal… it will resurrect. Not that it will die and then come back to life… Jesus says: it will NEVER DIE… it will never lose its life. Life… Jesus… is a higher authority than death. Here's the subtle but revolutionary distinction that Jesus is wanting to make; it's at the heart of the Gospel: Jesus is Life, and death cannot not take away Life. In other words, the process that we call dying cannot actually take Him away. If Jesus is Life, then even when He dies, He still is Life. Life can never be taken away from Him, He can never be separated from Himself. Death is not an authority over Him.SO when Jesus says, “I am the resurrection”, He's saying that He is the proof that death cannot take away Life. That He has authority over death; that is resurrection. Jesus is Resurrection and Life. 3.   WHAT DOES THE REDEFINITION OF RESURRECTION LIFE MEAN FOR US? Dispelling of The Lie (rejection of worldly lens towards radical trust in The Father)Jesus spends all of His ministry trying to get His disciples to see that Life and Resurrection are defined by who He is… but it doesn't land for them… He is the Revealer of Truth, but there's “someone” else that is working very hard to hide the Truth from them.Luke 8:11-12“Now this is the parable: the seed is the word of God. And those beside the road are the ones who have heard, then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved.Luke 24:15-17While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him.And He said to them, “What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?” And they came to a stop, looking sad.And then they proceed to tell Jesus about Himself and His own story. The very same story that He told them on numerous occasions must happen. So, Jesus hears them out and then comes back with these words:Luke 24:25-26“You foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to come into His glory?”There's clearly a blindness over the disciples that is preventing them from understanding what Jesus is saying. Someone is concealing the Truth from them. What can't they see? Why is it necessary for these things to happen? Why must Jesus suffer? Why must He be handed over, be betrayed by someone close, abandoned by His closest friends, humiliated, put to death by suffering as a criminal naked on a cross… and then rise from the dead? Why must all these things happen?Jesus is saying that unless these things happen we will not see that He Himself is the Resurrection and the Life. We're so caught up in Satan's lie that unless He suffers, the lie will never be completely unmasked. And we will never be able to see Jesus as He truly is, Resurrection and Life, in order to receive Him… to receive Life Himself. This is the lie of Satan: God cannot be trusted. God is not in control. God is not good. This is how he maintains the lie: by convincing us that suffering and death are proof that we can't trust God. If we encounter suffering and death in this world and in our lives, then it must mean God is not in control and He is not good. So we need to do everything in our power to avoid suffering and death ourselves. If God cannot be trusted, we need to take matters into our own hands. To unmask the lie over humanity: Jesus must suffer as a human… must allow Satan to throw the kitchen sink at Him, and then emerge with just as much life as He had beforehand, fully confident and trusting in the Goodness of His Father. Knowing that His Father has always been in control and that Satan never had any power over Him. This is Truth: Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life for us. He has unmasked the lie for our sake, so that we might know Life in Him… this is why He came. It's His Eternal Life that He came to give us, not a temporary life of our own choosing.Jesus - the Resurrection and the Way, the Truth, the Life – is the very definition of Life. It's only as His Life exposes all our false ways of “living” that we can turn to Him and walk in His Way, the Way that is Truth and Life. This is the reason the Apostle John talks about Jesus as the Light of the world, coming to us to expose and dispel the darkness so that we can walk in the Light of Life. And since Jesus cannot die, He is forever working to reveal Himself to us to make us alive in Him.While there are still people believing in Satan's lie he will continue manufacturing it, he'll keep propping it up… but he can't keep it up forever, and the Good News is that Jesus is Perseverance Incarnate… He will not die… the lie will continue to be dispelled; and Jesus will not stop until it has been completely unmasked. And that's exactly what we see here in Luke 24. Picking up on the dialogue Jesus is having with the 2 disciples on the road to Emmaus… we see that Jesus will keep chipping away at the lie until it crumbles.Luke 24:27-31Then beginning with Moses and with all the Prophets, He explained to them the things written about Himself in all the Scriptures. And they approached the village where they were going, and He gave the impression that He was going farther. And so they strongly urged Him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day is now nearly over.”So He went in to stay with them. And it came about, when He had reclined at the table with them, that He took the bread and blessed it, and He broke it and began giving it to them. And then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight. Now before we start wondering where Jesus went, there's something incredible that is happening here. It speaks to what happens when the Truth is revealed and accepted: When people see and accept the Truth that Jesus reveals, that Truth prepares the way (spoiler alert) for the very Spirit of Jesus to come into them. Just because Jesus disappears and can't be seen anymore, doesn't mean that God's not there, or that He can't be trusted; or that He's not always working for their good; this is the Truth that the disciples are coming to know. Satan's lie is crumbling.Luke 17:20-21“The kingdom of God is not coming with signs that can be observed; nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!' or, ‘There it is!' For behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”And Paul, in Romans says,Romans 10:6-8“Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will go up into heaven?' (that is, to bring Christ down), 7 or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).” 8 But what does it say? “The Word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”…”Jesus and Paul are both saying the same thing here: As soon as the Truth (that is, Jesus) is revealed to a person, He (Jesus, Life Himself) begins to to dwell in them by His Spirit. 4.   Jesus has revealed Himself to be Resurrection and Life for us.The resurrection tells us in bold letters that until we can say that we see and realise a 1-to-1 likeness with Jesus in our own lives, then we're missing out on something. He is Life, and if there are elements of Him that we don't seem to have, then there are still areas of our lives that we are believing a lie. There's still more that He has for us.What is Jesus wanting us to see and receive more of? His Father… to know that He rules over all in Jesus… that the Kingdom is HERE… that we are His CHILDREN... that He is holding no good thing back from us… that we can live with reckless abandon in following Him and loving others… that we can know more of His Life if we will believe in Him and turn from The Lie in every shape and form. You'll know areas of your life that you're believing The Lie because you'll be sad and downcast in them even while the very Spirit of Jesus is within you wanting to commune with you; wanting you to align your life with Him and experience the Truth of His Life. It's not a guilt trip, if there are areas in our lives where we truly feel lack hope or joy, it's an invitation to know Life within you as you expose the Lie in the light of who Jesus is.We're going to spend the next 6 months exploring what that journey looked like for the early church as we go through Acts. But let's not just read and hear about it, let's enter into the Kingdom of Light that is here right now… Abundance… divine providence… the complete self-giving love of God. This is the divine nature He wants us to partake in… Jesus says in effect, “Unless you eat and drink MY reality, the only True reality, you do not have Life in you. You are allowing Satan to rob you of your joy in God… it's foolishness” (His words, not mine). It's very different to wishful thinking… it's very different to optimism…IF you believe a lie, it will become your cage. BUT if you move against a lie towards Truth… it will fail (it has to, it has no substance), and you will come into Truth. 5.   Breaking BreadAnd as we take communion we're going to remember two things:First, that just as Jesus broke bread at the feeding of the thousands, we are called to trust in the abundant provision and goodness of God even if there is a lie of scarcity pervading our society. We are called to reject the lie that we have to keep for ourselves rather than giving of ourselves.Second, we're casting our minds to Jesus on the cross… we're rejecting Satan's lie that the Father has forsaken His Son. The fullness of Satan's lie is reached on the cross; he's screaming from the rooftops, “Look, how can God be good? See what happens to those who trust in Him?”. We're here to reject that lie, to align ourselves with Jesus, the Resurrection and the Life. To acknowledge that Jesus has disarmed Satan and his Lie, that He's made a public display of him, having triumphed over him on the cross. As we take the elements we are committing our lives to the Truth of Jesus, to conforming ourselves to His image, to living and believing in Him as we walk in the light of who He is.

Q&A #183 Satan, God's laws, food pantry, God not punishing disobedience, sacrificial animals and more.1. Thinking of the fallen angel who is Satan. Wondering if that is literal and if he is an actual leader of that world or if it's a metaphor for the evil realm which yes I think has evil spirits 2. Why did so many of the laws God gave to Moses involve putting people to death for seemingly minor things, then not for others? For example, exodus 21:20 allows masters to beat their servants to death and the only consequence is they have to be "punished" by an unspecified means. And if that slave doesn't die but recovers within a couple days there is no punishment at all. But exodus 21:17 says whoever curses their parents must be put to death. Beating a servant to death seems way worse to me than causing division in a family, but it appears God thinks differently. Laws such as these don't seem to value individual life at all. Does God care less about individual life than I think or am I understanding this wrong?3. Would it be possible to put a list of foods required to stock the pantry please?? I like to provide things that the pantry is short of which are needed by those accessing this resource. Many thanks. Dianne Federation4. Exodus 24 God asks Moses, and Moses alone to approach him. But 70 leaders of Israel also approached him and they saw God, and God seems to eat a meal with them rather than getting mad at them. why didn't the leaders get punished for seeing God even when they disobeyed him?5. When Israel was wandering in the desert, they complained about not having meat to eat, only manna. If they didn't have meat, where did they get the animals for the sacrifices, that God had just told them to perform?6. I'm part of a study group and the question of Romans 13:1 - 5 has come up.  If Paul the author of this passage is in prison for not obeying the gov't authority. As well as the many believers over the centuries have been imprisoned and martyred for “disobeying” government authority. (ie. Germans, Dutch, and many others hiding Jews under the Nazi gov't stating this was against the rules and punishable by death) Is this passage - perhaps - incorrectly translated in our current Bible translations?Could it be that what Paul was talking about, was God/Jesus Himself being this authority- like Moses taught the Israelites “God is our authority, judge, and King? And if you still maintain this is referring to civil government, where do we draw the line?

A Homily for Lent 1 March 1, 2020 All Saints Anglican Church, Prescott, AZ   Text: Matthew 4:1-11   Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of our hearts be always acceptable in thy sight, O Lord our strength and our redeemer. Amen.             It was a perfect day, like any other day, and they were tending to the garden, pruning branches, fertilizing the roots, and assuring all the plants had enough water when the serpent walked up, beautiful and perfect in every way. She liked the serpent, she always found him to be pretty, and he was delightfully clever. But that day he looked into her eyes and said something that changed the world forever.             It wasn’t that he said a lot, or even made any sort of pervasive arguments, and she wished she’d known better how to respond. No, all that the serpent said was: “did God really say?” It was just a tiny seed of doubt, a tiny nudge away from the truth. They had hoped not to fail God, they had hoped not to disappoint him. He was their friend, and how they liked those walks in the garden in the cool of the day. How they liked to be with him, he loved them so, he loved them, better than she loved her children.             But that question – how it haunted her every day – how it haunted her, why did she fall for such a silly little thing – why didn’t she answer better when he asked: “did God really say?”             We have two accounts of Satan tempting people, two accounts of the devil seeking to trip up people – he first goes after Adam and Eve – he goes after the first people, our first parents and tempts them into disbelief – even if its just momentary disbelief – “are you certain?” He asks and it’s this little question that is enough to lead them into sin. Then, when, instead of telling the devil what God actually, instead of telling the devil to go away for what he was suggesting was evil, they add to what God said, the devil sees his opportunity. He tempts Eve further – he tempts her by calling God a liar, and promising her power, and she and Adam take and eat, and sin entered the world. Sin infected them, and it has infected everyone ever since. Sin has lead to death, sickness, disease, pain, anger, disbelief, war, famine, and natural disaster. Sin is deadly, sin is the dreadful infection.             But Satan also tempted the second Adam, Satan came to him in the wilderness and asked him to prove himself. But Christ owed no one proof – but rather – set for us a model of rebuke, a model of putting off the devil, a model of total dependence upon God.             The wilderness – spiritual or literal is an interesting place – because in wilderness there are deep dark dangers – there are pitfalls, there are demons, there is dread and terribleness – but too in the wilderness is the opportunity to depend totally upon God.             One of three things can happen when we enter into a wilderness season – whether it be that of the intentional abstinence of Lent – the intentional mortification of the flesh – or that of the seasons when disappointment, disaster, and darkness besets us.             First we can be tempted into hardening our hearts – tempted into death – tempted into saying God is not God – God does not love and care for us, and so in our despondency we cast him aside for this present trial seems too dark, too hard.             Second – we can be tempted into self-reliance – tempted into saying we do not need God or anyone else, but we can handle this on our own. We can find within ourselves all the answers that we need – we can find happiness in the wilderness of the world, and so we kick God out, and strive to be our own gods.             We live in a time – where everyone has their own truths, where everyone is encouraged “to be true to themselves.” We are told to find happiness within ourselves – but such advice leads to spiritual disaster. No – I think that ancient definition of happiness is far better – Christian happiness is that feeling that we get when we see a friend from afar coming towards us. And this leads us to the third thing that can happen in the wilderness – we see God coming towards us – like the father of the prodigal son – we see God running to us and we are reminded that we desperately need to learn on God – desperately need to become saturated in His word, desperately need to lean totally and completely upon Him. Desperately need the Lord to be our shepherd, need to trust that He will lead us through the darkness and into the light of knowing Him.             The wilderness has had such a power over people because it is there we can meet God, it is in the wilderness of fasting – or the literal wilderness that we can learn to become completely dependent upon God, but at the same time – it is there that we can learn total self-reliance.             It is not without some irony that some have noted that out of the desert came the great teachings of the first monks, the great teachings that came out of total reliance upon God – but at the same time – out of the desert comes the city that is completely man made, where man taught himself to be dependent upon no-one else and that city is known by the moniker of “sin city.”             It is in the desert that Jesus wrestled with Satan and put him away – it is in the desert – not the garden that Jesus overcame the temptations that Adam and Eve failed to resist, it is in the desert that Christ showed us – how to abide deeply in Him, so that we may not fall as our first parents fell.             As modern and post-modern Americans we tend to forget that “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” as St. Paul so eloquently put it. We tend to forget that the devil and his minions are very real – and are like roaring lions that seek the destruction of souls.             We have reasonable explanations for everything, and as such we have taught ourselves not to put on the whole armor of God, but an even deeper self-reliance, but this is not what Christ has modeled for us, and this is not the right response that we are called to.             The great evangelical Anglican Bishop J.C. Ryle summarized what first we must keep in mind, how deep and dark and dangerous the devil is:             “what a real and mighty enemy we have in the devil.” Ryle writes, “He is not afraid to assault even the Lord Jesus Himself. Three times over he attacks God’s own Son. Our Saviour was ‘tempted of the devil.’             It was the devil who brought sin into the world at the beginning. This is he, who vexed Job, deceived David, and gave Peter a heavy fall. This is he, whom the Bible calls a “murderer,’ a ‘liar,’ and a ‘roaring lion.’ This is he, whose enmity to our souls never slumbers and never sleeps. This is he, who for nearly 6000 years has been working at one work, to ruin men and women, and to draw them to hell. This is he, whose cunning and subtlety pass man’s understanding, and who often appears as ‘an angel of light.’”             Let us not have the hubris, or foolishness of our modern age and think that the devil no longer roams, think that what we see with our eyes, and touch with our hands is all that there is – let us be ever mindful of that great enemy of God and mankind, and let us take upon ourselves the whole armor of God, take upon ourselves the victory we find in Christ.             Now, St. Matthew does something interesting with His gospel. As we read it, it becomes very clear that he is writing to early Jewish believers in Christ. We know that this is his audience because he takes for granted that his readers would understand Jewish rituals and traditions, and does not take the time to explain them to his readers, where St. Mark does.             But he does something else interesting – the Old Testament is filled with men who were nearly deliverers – nearly ones who crushed the head of the serpent, crushed the head of the tempter – Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, and David to name a few. Each one, came close, each one models for us faith – but each one sinned, each one fell short.             But over and over again – St. Matthew points his readers to ways in which Christ fulfilled that which those who came before him failed to fulfill. He is delivered from Egypt, he wanders in the wilderness, he gives five books of teachings and two tablets of the law – for St. Matthew Christ is the new Israel, He is creating the new Israel, He is opening the door to finally and fully be that blessing to all the nations as Abraham was promised. Christ is the fulfilment of the Law and the Prophets.             It was interesting, on Friday we were talking at the confirmation class about this passage a little bit – and the way it is written, it’s not entirely clear – did the devil tempt Jesus throughout the forty days or did the devil wait until Jesus was weakened and tired?             The first few verses are not terribly clear, they read – “Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him.”             Perhaps – the devil was like St. Paul’s thorn in his side constantly tempting him, causing Him to struggle, and thereby reminding Jesus to trust in God the Father, to lean not on His own understanding, to learn not in his fleshy power, but perhaps the devil came at the end of the temptation, when his flesh was weakened, when the days were starting to feel longer, and more exhausting. I think I read it in the later way – that he was sustained until the end – and as his fasting was coming to the end – the devil came to Him and tempted him.             Charles Spurgeon summarizes this rather eloquently: “throughout the long fast he was miraculously sustained; but at the close of it hunger began to try him. We are more in danger when our labour or suffering is over than during the time of its continuance. Now that the Lord is drained dry by his long fast, and is made faint by hunger, the enemy is  upon him. The devil is a great coward, and takes a mean advantage of us.” The devil waits until we are the most vulnerable and then launches various and sundry attacks upon us. He whispers “you are not good enough for God to love, you are too broken, to despised,” or else “you can do this on your own, you do not need him, you’re stronger, more independent, you are better than God.”             Both are insidious lies that live in our culture today – lies that say – you are irredeemable, or that you do not need redemption. My friends – we desperately need redemption – we are not otherwise fine without Christ, we are not mostly okay and Jesus is like vitamins – nice and makes us stronger, but most of us don’t really need him – No! we desperately need him in our lives – outside of Him we are dead– but there is no sin too dark, nor no depth too deep that God can not find us there – there is nothing that can separate us from His love – so do not believe the lies of the devil.             But Christ resists three temptations: the temptation to find sustenance outside of God, the temptation to test God, and the temptation to power. We face these temptations as well – and we find our hope not in ourselves but in Christ for He overcame them for us.             Ultimately. It is no surprise that Christ over comes the temptations for He is God-incarnate, Immanuel, God with us – but at the same time – he does what so many before Him had failed to do – he starts that great crushing of the wicked serpent’s head – he shows us that He will overcome evil for our sake.             He says to Satan – “God’s word is where true life comes from, not bread alone, not temporality alone,” he says “do not test God for you Satan have already thrown yourself down from heaven, and the angels did not catch you – I have come down from heaven willingly – and on the last day I will be raised up above all others and in that raising up – I will raise all who trust in me, I will crush your head, I will destroy your power.” He says – “no, I will only worship God the father – I will only serve Him, I and in that – I will inherit not earthly kingdoms that will fall away – but the eternal kingdom of heaven.”             Christ overcomes the devil in the wilderness for us – when so many others had failed, and as such in the wilderness of our lives – the wilderness of dreadful dark days – the wilderness of the Lenten fast – we are called not to trust in our own strength and power – but in the strength we find in Christ alone.             And he models for us that which St. Paul fleshes out in his epistle to the Ephesians – “take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.”             The devil throws at Jesus every attack he can think of – even manipulates the word of God – and Jesus responds with the word of God – rightly understood. Likewise, St. Paul paints for us a picture that knowing the word of God is an offensive way to push back the power of the devil, but too we hold faith that Christ has created in us a new heart – we let the truth of Christ bind us together – we put on Christ righteousness that it may become our own righteousness, that our inner life would be protected, we guard our mind with the fact of our salvation.             The Lord has given us sufficient protection regardless of what attacks the devil may come up with.             As we travel through this Lenten season, as we see our church blessed, as we see our lives become more rich in the Lord, let us keep in mind to put on the whole armor of God, let us keep in mind that Christ has perfectly put away the temptations of the devil, let us learn not to depend upon ourselves, but throw all our cares upon the Lord, that we may find our riches and joy in Christ alone.             In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost. Amen.

All of God's work, whether judgment or chastisement, is directed at Satan; it is to save humans, to beat Satan. God's work has one objective: to fight Satan till the end. God won't rest till victory. Because God's work is directed at Satan, and because those corrupted are under Satan's domain, if God did not start a fight against Satan, or cause man to break with it, they could never be gained. If man were held by Satan, and if they weren't gained, it'd prove Satan unbeaten, it has not been defeated. The substance of God's 6,000-year work is the battle against the great red dragon, and the work of managing mankind is also the work of beating Satan. 2 God has battled for 6,000 years and worked to bring man to a new realm, one where Satan is conquered, man will be free. Each stage is aligned with real needs and requirements of man, so Satan God can defeat. If man were held by Satan, and if they weren't gained, it'd prove Satan unbeaten, it has not been defeated. The substance of God's 6,000-year work is the battle against the great red dragon, and the work of managing mankind is also the work of beating Satan. 3 In God's 6,000-year management plan, in the first stage He did the work of the law. In stage two was the work of Age of Grace. Then He conquers mankind in the third stage. This work is directed at the extent to which Satan has corrupted mankind. Defeating Satan is what this work aims, and all these three stages are for this sake. The substance of God's 6,000-year work is the battle against the great red dragon, and the work of managing mankind is also the work of beating Satan. from The Word Appears in the Flesh
