Scott Devine joins Casey Scott and Dr. Matt Woolley to talk about his family’s experience moving to America from Ireland to be more active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, why he found comfort in pursuing rebellious behavior throughout high school, and his decision to attend BYU-Idaho, despite continuously disobeying the Honor Code. Scott also talks about going off the rails and having to spend Christmas and New Year’s Day in a residential facility, his experience with relapsing, and the work he put toward his sobriety that would eventually help him climb out of the hole of addiction.

Welcome to episode #759 of Six Pixels of Separation. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #759 - Host: Mitch Joel. If we have learned anything during this pandemic, it is this: the brands that are either purely digital or the ones with a strong digital component felt much less pain. Look no further than the value of a company like Amazon or the incredible rise of Shopify. Watching so many entrepreneurs turn their small businesses into something more “digital" is a sight to behold. Scott Devine and his business, Scott's Bass Lessons, is a great case study. We're about to hear my many worlds collide in this episode, so I hope that you will stick with it and enjoy the ride. One of my favorite YouTube channels is Scott’s Bass Lessons. I love the way Scott Devine plays the bass, teaches the bass, and his mini-documentaries and interviews. He’s inspiring. It turns out that I am not alone. But that’s just one small part of what makes Scott unique. He’s best known for his online bass school, Scott’s Bass Lessons. SBL (for short) isn’t just the biggest online school for bassists, it’s the biggest online school for any instrument (put aside institutions that teach multiple instruments). Scott prefers to call it the “Netflix for bass players.” And in the last decade, he’s built the company into an operation with nearly 25,000 students/customers. What moved him from gigging to teaching? How does he keep his students so engaged online? Scott is a real triple-threat when it comes to music (he can play, teach, and market his business). I’ve been a fan since of his since I first started watching his videos, and his journey is a fascinating one that has led to millions of views and millions of fans and followers and a growing business. Enjoy the conversation… Running time: 1:02:19. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Subscribe over at iTunes. Please visit and leave comments on the blog - Six Pixels of Separation. Since Smith's Onion has been primarily a live band at this point -- or, at least they were before the pandemic -- they don't have any formal recordings yet, so the songs on this episode are just lo-fi live recordings. These are real people, real stories, real memberships. We're gearing up for our THIRD SEASON, which will be kicking off on June 13th; but to whet your appetite we've gone back into the archives from past seasons and picked out one of our favourites to share on The Membership Guys Podcast. This episode features Scott Devine from Scott's Bass Lessons Scott was actually a client of ours for many years, the very last client we stopped working with in fact. And we saw his site go from free YouTube videos and a PayPal donate button to a seven figure membership site in the 5 years that we worked with him. Scott's Bass Lessons has been running for 8 years now and has attracted over 50,000 members in that time. It's also gone from one-man bad to having a full faculty of world class bass educators. You are tuned in to the very first episode under our new name - formerly The Musicality Podcast, this show is now called simply “Musicality Now” which we think better captures the spirit and variety of the show and where we’ll be taking it in the future.   When we made the switch to video back in January we were delighted to have our first interview be with Sabrina Peña Young, someone we know well and who has deep insights, which made for a long and fascinating converation.   We’re excited now to kick off this new incarnation of the show similarly, with a particularly meaty episode that is going to have a big and positive impact on your own musicality journey.   Our guest today is Scott Devine, the man behind Scott’s Bass Lessons, the #1 website for learning bass guitar - they have over 650,000 YouTube subscribers, and have trained over 25,000 bassists to date. If you play bass, then you know Scott - he’ll be all over your Facebook, your YouTube, and there’s a good chance you’re already a member of the Academy site where they provide extensive training, masterclasses and live calls with a faculty of the top bass educators in the world.   In this conversation we talk about: • How spending six months at sea transformed Scott’s bass playing. • The simple piece of advice that immediately put an end to Scott’s umming and ahhing over what to study next in his own bass learning. • And, after talking to, interviewing, and studying with dozens upon dozens of the world’s top bassists and musicians, the one thing Scott has learned they all have in common - and (spoiler alert) it’s not “talent”!   Scott also gives a fantastic mini tutorial on a particular bass technique, walking basslines, which is something that’s really valuable to understand, whether you play bass or not - you’re going to hear these everywhere, and after today’s conversation you’re going to understand how exactly they’re put together.   There is a ton packed in here and you guys are in for a treat…   This is Musicality Now.     Subscribe For Future Episodes! "What else do you do?" said the neurologist to Scott Devine. "Because you'll never play bass again." How would you feel after hearing that news? What would you do? Scott was making his living as a gigging bassist when he began having problems with his hands.  These problems grew progressively worse, prompting Scott to seek medical advice. The diagnosis was focal dystonia, a neurological condition that affects a muscle or group of muscles in a specific part of the body, causing involuntary muscular contractions and abnormal postures.  Doctors told Scott that playing bass would not be an option for him anymore. Fast-forward many years, and Scott is now making his living teaching electric bass (and yes, playing it!) to thousands of people world-wide. How in the world did Scott overcome this? We dig into this and much more in today's episode! In today's podcast I sit down with Geoff to share my story. My love affair with the bass started in the North West of England, where I got a job as an apprentice luthier at Overwater Basses. During the next few years, I landed a gig on a cruise ship where I learned the ropes, before setting up scottsbasslessons.com having been told that I wouldn't be able to play bass again due to a neurological disorder. After discovering that silk gloves could help me regain control of my playing, I set about putting the finishing touches to SBL. Of course, it didn't all happen overnight, and who better to delve a little deeper than our very own Geoff Chalmers.
