This week on Queer News: We remember trans trailblazer Elisa Rae Shupe, her fight for recognition, and the heartbreaking circumstances of her passing. In politics, Maine's governor stands tall against Trump's anti-trans rhetoric. In culture and entertainment, we celebrate Raquel Willis, named one of Time's Women of the Year, and her powerful message to the trans community. Brittney Griner cancels a speaking engagement over a suspicious hotel message and Angel Reese dominates making Unrivaled history. ✨ This week's highlights:
Tonight's episode is piping hot, straight from the ovens of 1860 Pizza in Bridgeport! We're joined by Greg Shupe, a mastermind behind the craft pizza revolution that's giving seed oils the boot, one tallow-fried wing at a time. Early voting is on the table, but don't worry—your ballot doesn't count unless you post a selfie. We also take a deep dive into the demise of old-school snow ski culture, where creative ski outfits and après-ski swagger have been replaced by selfies and generic gear. And speaking of swagger, is Greg's mankini making a triumphant comeback? We'll let you decide if "Jean-o" should hit the slopes! From there, the conversation escalates as we question the new reality of a wartime apocalypse—is nuclear the next big thing? But hey, don't worry too much, just "relax the sack" with a touch of Botox, the new trend taking men's fashion to strange places. We also wander into the Conspiracy Crossroads—what's the deal with octane levels in gasoline? Is it all just a smokescreen to drain your wallet at the pump? Pop the cork, settle in, and enjoy a wild ride through this barrel-aged episode!
Republican incumbent Bryan Shupe is facing Democratic challenger Rony Baltazar-Lopez for Delaware's 36th House District seat in Sussex County.Shupe has held the seat since 2018, but won the Primary Election by only 12 votes this year, leaving Baltazar-Lopez wondering if there is enough discontent to flip the Milford-area seat blue.Delaware Public Media's Sarah Petrowich reports on those candidates and where they stand.
After a heated debate left him questioning his approach, Jefferson Shupe attended an immigration rally, where he expected hostility but found something entirely different: people with fears, hopes, and stories that echoed his own. Shupe, author of The Bathwater Brigade, shares the challenges of confronting his own biases and the surprising empathy that emerged from stepping outside his ideological bubble. I knew I was right and couldn't understand how someone else could think differently.' I believe that there are forces out there dividing Americans in unhealthy ways. It's fine (and necessary) to disagree and work things out. But it's not healthy to ignore common ground that's right there. We can see common ground and strengthen America without compromising our values, and we can still be our authentic selves. * Jefferson Instead of shutting the left out of the conversation if I can, I have come to see that my friends on the left have something to offer (even while I try to beat them at the voting booth!) * Let's Search For Truth Together - BraverAngels.org - FairForAll.org * Kamala consider consequences of Trump presidency. * Trump: Worst speech ever!

In November of 2012, Shupe, who lives in the Cascade Mountains near Mount Rainier in Washington state, had a strange encounter while hiking. She heard what sounded like talking, whistles and a grunt. To her surprise, she spotted what appeared to be a Bigfoot possibly hunting some elk. That encounter helped her to understand things she had been experiencing while out in the woods.Over the years, she has grown to trust and respect the creatures and has, in several ways, learned to co-exist with them.Shupe, along with other like minded folks, has created B&G Group which has had numerous encounters with Bigfoot. She also has a Youtube channel, "Squatchin' with Barb and Gabby." where she documents all her encounters.Websites Barbara Shupe Facebook youtube.com/@Barbshupe1964
Winning over live audiences has been Shupe's natural-born talent since childhood. A fifth-generation fiddler, he started performing with his siblings at age 10. He formed the RubberBand with the idea of drawing from a pool of musicians who could wander in and out. However, certain members seemed to stick, and the band soon became a cohesive unit. Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand, took the long-running Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado by storm, winning the live band contest. This launched them into the national music scene. After becoming regional favorites, they signed a deal with Capitol Records, and cut an album in 2005 called "Dream Big." The title song became the theme song of Amy Grant's TV show, Three Wishes.Ryan Shupe's band plays americana, bluegrass, country, folk, rock. https://www.instagram.com/theryanshupe/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClv-fdBqOShy7t88ZtuQqIghttps://www.facebook.com/ryanshupemusic/

After spending too much time arguing unproductively on social media as a younger man, Jefferson Shupe sought a way to pass on what he's learned to the next generation. The result is his YA novel, The Bathwater Brigade. Finding Common Ground With Those Who Hold Contrary BeliefsPolarization and tribalism have taken hold of many parts of our public discourse today. It has been my experience that many who I once thought to be reasonable, have now placed politics over principles. How did we get here? When people place political blinders on, and quit interacting with those of differing mindsets, they often lose their ability to focus on things such as integrity, consistency and our common humanity. As my friend and Braver Angels brother John Wood Jr. recently stated in DTH Episode 165, "Polarization is the one problem that ensures all other problems won't be solved". Why? If we we are not having conversations with those of differing mindsets, we lose the opportunity for finding common ground with those who hold contrary beliefs.Who is Jefferson Shupe and what is "The Bathwater Brigade"?Jefferson Shupe is a father, software coder, musician and author living with his family in Utah. After making plenty of his own mistakes when it came to public political discourse, Jefferson began to realize that toxic conversations and interactions seldom, if ever, led to positive or productive results. Jefferson has a strong passion for discussing world events with friends and strangers who challenge his ideas as he try's to make sense of it all and connect with founding principles. This passion led to Jefferson writing "The Bathwater Brigade" a novel on principles over politics. It is a fictional account of what happens when a racial tragedy divides a Texas college town and a free-speech club stands for unity amid violent demands for its termination.Learn more and connect with Jefferson Shupe by checking out the full show notes for this episode at DerateTheHate.com.What have you done today to make your life a better life? Rediscovering the Wisdom of Human Nature: How Civilization Destroys Happiness by Chet ShupeIn one of the most popular TED Talks ever, Professor Robert Waldinge of Harvard asks: "What keeps us happy, as we go through life?" He then tells us about the “Harvard Study of Adult Development." The data taken on that study of the lives of 750 men, over 75 years, reveals that good relationships are what keeps us happy and healthy, throughout life—not wealth, privilege, or fame. This is one of many studies that tell us something that each of us knows, down deep: To love and be loved is essential to our sense of wellbeing. Yet, loneliness is endemic in our world, because we are conditioned to believe that love is something we do. But, actually, love is a mind-body reaction to specific sets of circumstances. We don't love others, because they need us, nor by intent. That is to pretend love. We love others for only one reason: Because we need THEM! In fact, the word “love” is so synonymous with the word “need” that the words can be interchanged in virtually any sentence, and not affect the meaning. For the first two hundred thousand years, or so, that humans walked the earth, unconditional love was implicit to our existence, because people depended completely on the mutual support of one another to survive. Now, our survival depends on the services provided by centralized systems of authority. Consequently, we love our governments unconditionally—so much so that we willingly kill and die for them during times of conflict. In his book, REDISCOVERING THE WISDOM OF HUMAN NATURE—How Civilization Destroys Happiness, Chet Shupe reveals why humans innocently subjugated themselves to external systems of authority, and how that act repressed our innate wisdom, which previously had naturally guided us, through feelings. The book reveals what must happen for us to regain our natural sense of purpose, belonging, and direction. Just as we cannot love, by intent, we cannot restore our natural emotional connections to one another, by intent. The good news is: Our innate wisdom will restore them for us, if we allow it. As a whistle-blower to the world, Chet Shupe speaks with urgency about the need for people to rediscover their connections with their own nature, if we are ever again to experience the contentment of sisterhood and brotherhood that is our natural heritage. Chet Shupe is an electronics engineer who suffered from severe Attention Deficit Disorder, for much of his life. When he was 43, his condition was finally diagnosed, and he began treatment with Ritalin. Suddenly, life made sense. As a result of that extraordinary experience, he began writing on brain dysfunction to provide a conceptual framework for medically treating the brain. As a result of that effort—combined with his professional knowledge of system control theory— Shupe's subject soon changed from brain dysfunction to cultural dysfunction. He realized that the brain cannot find lasting contentment, nor can it produce behavior that serves its species, when functioning in a reality that, emotionally, it does not comprehend.Rediscovering the Wisdom of Human Nature: How Civilization Destroys Happiness: Shupe, Chet: 9781667865850: Amazon.com: BooksRediscovering the Wisdom of Human Nature - Chet Shupe | Home (spiritualfreedompress.com)http://www.ReadersMagnet.comhttp://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/62223rm.mp3

Tennessee-born country music singer-songwriter, Chris Shupe, grew up listening to and playing country music with friends and family in a small town in Georgia. As a child, he was heavily influenced by country music legends such as Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks and Brooks & Dunn. In his teen years and early twenties, Chris decided to step into the rock world where he was successful and eventually shared the stage with several world-renowned artists and bands. In 2020, Chris chose to break away from the rock scene and embark on a journey back to his roots to become a solo country music artist. Although starting fresh was an obstacle, he was determined and set out to Nashville with his guitar and new ideas in mind. He played on the streets of Broadway regularly, busking for tips in his guitar case. There he made a name for himself and was recognized by several business owners on Broadway, allowing him to begin to play on stages such as the world famous Tootsies Orchid Lounge, Alan Jackson's Good Time Bar and other well known honky-tonks on the strip. During this time, Chris was also working on his own original music behind the scenes. In late 2021 he wrote and recorded his debut single, “California Sky”, on Music Row with Grammy Award winning studio musicians. It is important to him to preserve the traditional sounds of the country music he grew up influenced by while also adding a hint of his rock-n-roll past to his music.
In this episode, we welcome Jefferson Shupe, author of the new YA novel, the Bathwater Brigade. Focusing on a college student's journey through campus politics in the wake of a police shooting controversy, Bathwater Brigade explores the challenges and rewards of finding unity, and helping others find unity, in a time of hostility and division - something that might just be related to what we do here! Throughout his conversation with UnityNow's Kimberly Kolb Eakin, Shupe discusses his inspirations and motivations for writing the book, how the fictional Bathwater Brigade - a campus political unity group - resembles real-world efforts, and how his book has been embraced by young adults, children, and parents in search of a positive message. Finally, the two discuss lessons to be learned about what it takes to build common ground, and why it's so important, both from the book's titular Brigade and from Shupe's writing journey. You won't want to miss it!Follow Jefferson Shupe:Twitter: https://twitter.com/JeffersonShupeWeb: http://bathwaterbrigade.comFollow UnityNow!https://twitter.com/UnityNowPodcasthttps://www.unitynowpodcast.comBecome a Member:Get full access: https://www.patreon.com/unitynowGet UnityNow! “Never go into business with your friends,” is what Rob and Taylor both believe and both ignored when throwing all governing rules to the wind at the height of the pandemic and starting their sock brand, InStitches, together. Taylor happened to have the world's most advanced, eco-friendly textile factory in China, and the guys had so much respect for one another as entrepreneurs, it was a no-brainer. And while the first iteration of Boosocki was generating $30k a month pretty much out of the gate, it was when they decided to pivot hard into whitespace with the sock card that the vision really became clear. Anyone who's ever been verbally bullied can tell you that the old saying “sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me” is nonsense. Words are powerful things. They can harm people. In fact, words can create whole categories that confuse men and women into a twisted understanding of their bodies and souls, and can even wreck their lives. To be clear, I'm not talking about just insults. I'm talking about labels—the words we use to think about ourselves and the power they have to shape our lives, especially our sexual identities. Just ask Jamie Shupe, who recently told his story in the Heritage Foundation's Daily Signal. Shupe was America's first legally-recognized “non-binary” person. In fact, his case opened up the non-binary status for people in eleven states and counting. His journey didn't begin with reworking gender labels. Before he won the right to be known as non-binary, he claimed to be a transgender woman, writing about his experience in The New York Times and receiving rock-star treatment from the LGBT movement. There was just one problem: Shupe wasn't, in fact, a woman trapped in a man's body or a genderless being. He was a victim of childhood sexual abuse and a veteran with PTSD. Now, after changing his mind and going back to living as a man, he admits that assuming new gender identities and fighting for their legal recognition was his way of trying to make a fresh start. The scary part is how, at every step, the medical community, state governments, and the news media legitimized his confusion. As Shupe writes: “When a licensed medical doctor writes you a letter essentially stating that you were born in the wrong body and a government agency or court of law validates that delusion, you become damaged and confused…The truth is that my sex change to non-binary was a medical and scientific fraud.” I hope you'll read Jamie Shupe's sad but revealing story. It's heartbreaking. And the saddest part of his story is that it exposes the new gender identities embraced by so many as artificial, harmful, and dehumanizing. Of course, there have always been those who have experienced gender confusion, and who have dealt with their sexual attraction in ways that are at odds with our God-given purpose. What's new today is the set of scripts that's currently imposing these confusions on individuals: If you're a little girl who plays with trucks, one script goes, you must really, deep down, be a boy. If you're a young man who has trouble relating to others of your sex, you must really, on the inside, be a woman. And if you have a mix of both traits or just can't decide, well then, there's a new script for you, too. You're “non-binary.” In all of these cases, it is the words—the categories that our culture has made up and imposed on real people—that carry all the power. In the long run, the mismatch between these categories and the people on whom they're imposed becomes painfully obvious. Last year on BreakPoint, we highlighted a study that called transgender identification a “social contagion” among teenagers—in other words, it's something many adopt because it's what all the cool kids are doing. We also know that between 63 and 94 percent of minors who identify as transgender will later change their minds, or “desist” as it's medically termed. This research, and stories like Shupe's, show how easily the new gender labels can consume a person's identity while burying real trauma that needs treatment. Young people especially need to know that turning words such as “transgender” and “non-binary,” and even “gay” and “lesbian” into categories of identity is a practice younger than I am. Seriously, this just started yesterday. But now, they're so often assigned as identity labels to anyone who fits an arbitrary set of stereotypes. As a result, they dominate lives and cause immeasurable damage. That's why refusing to accept these labels isn't an act of hate, as we are told, but rather it's an act of love. As Christians called to this confused cultural moment, we should be sensitive to people's experiences, recognizing that trauma often plays a major role in gender confusion. At the same time we should be clear that trendy labels and identities aren't the answer, and the best way to honor others' humanity is to refuse to perpetrate this medical and scientific fraud against others.
