The Ashes are here, and so are we with our definitive predictions. This isn't just a friendly chat; we're putting our reputations on the line. We've gathered the crew to discuss who will lift the Urn and why this series might just redefine Test cricket. Expect passionate arguments, obscure historical references, and perhaps a touch of bias as we weigh the strengths and weaknesses of both the English and Australian squads. Tune in to see who we're backing to take home the prize. To add some official structure, we're using a "snake draft" format to lock in our predictions. Each host will draft key outcomes—from the final scoreline to top run-scorers and leading wicket-takers—forcing strategic consideration. It's a high-stakes battle of wits as we meticulously build our prediction sheets and ultimately crown one host as the supreme prognosticator of the 2025 Ashes series. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

In July 2024 at 90° N my acoustic equipment slid into a hole 15 cm in diameter that our team had drilled into the sea ice. Midnight sun tossed shadows at the fog, slowing the wind just enough. My fingers trembled, but not from the frigid temperatures. I couldn't imagine what I might hear here, beneath the ice floes at the top of the world. Science aside for a moment; icy droplets blurred white and blue ice, and my headphones hung in my hand at my side. Awe and wonder gratefully stole time.  The underwater radiated noise (URN) emanating from the icebreaker that brought me to this place dominated the acoustic symphony for only a few seconds before geological and biological signals took centre stage and I listened to the otherworldly sounds of animals that make their homes below and on the crackling ice at the top of the world. As I listened, I wondered how life here was dealing with rising temperatures, with thinning ice ... with way too many melt ponds. Recorded by Andrea Lynn.

This week, the editors review three poems by Nick Lantz: “An Urn for Ashes,” “Starvation Ranch,” and “Ghost as Naked Man.” As a child, Nick Lantz was obsessed with paranormal phenomenon and the unexplained, from cryptids to aliens to ghosts. His fourth book, You, Beast, won the Brittingham Prize and was published by University of Wisconsin Press in 2017. He was also the recipient of a 2017 NEA fellowship for his poetry. He lives in Huntsville, Texas, where he teaches at Sam Houston State University and edits the Texas Review. “An Urn for Ashes” gets us started off on our a conversation on past lives and reincarnation. Lantz's impressive use of language and imagery draws up ideas of present beings possessing remnants of those far in the past. Moving on to “Starvation Ranch,” the editors reflect on what memory and recollection look like in the modern era. The poem layers alluring images that are beautifully constructed and give us a front seat in recounting many summers past. The final poem, “Ghost as Naked Man” offers a reimagined commentary on gender as a social construct. Seemingly in conversation with other works on the topic, the poem conveys frustration and destruction, then pride, as expressions of manhood. It also brings to mind Ada Limón's “After the Storm,” published in Issue 66 of Painted Bride Quarterly. Listen in for our takes on these poems and the verdicts! An Urn for Ashes The atoms that made up Julius Caesar's body, burned on a pyre, spread by wind and time, have since dispersed far and wide, and statistically speaking you have in you some infinitesimal bit of carbon or hydrogen from his hand or tongue, or maybe some piece of the foot that, crossing a river, turned a republic into an empire. But that means you carry with you also the unnamed dead, the serfs and farmers, foot soldiers and clerks, and their sandals and the axles of chariots and incense burned at an altar and garbage smoking in a pit outside a great city at the center of an empire, that you are a vessel carrying the ashes of many empires and the ashes of people burned away by empires, their sweet, unheard melodies. And look how finely wrought you are, how precise your features, your very form a kind of ceremony for transporting the dead through the living world. Starvation Ranch Frank Hite, my mother's father's mother's father, named his farm Starvation Ranch, and one July, I balanced high on a ladder to repaint those white letters on the same red barn where they've been for a hundred years. But that summer is a sketch, a note written in the margin of a book I gave away. I shot rabbits and learned to drive and listened to the same Lou Reed tape on loop in the upper bedroom of my family's farmhouse. In a closet I found my grandmother's high school yearbook in which she had crossed out the name of each classmate who had died. I learned there are three kinds of garbage— the kind that goes in the compost heap to feed the garden that grows the peppers and the corn, the kind that goes in the ditch to feed the coyotes who howl at night, the kind that goes in an old oil drum to burn I learned to love the indentation my grandmother's pencil left in the paper over a name, like the tally marks I carved into a tree for each rabbit I shot. I learned that a stone arrowhead, taken from a newly plowed field that has held it for hundreds of years is still sharp enough to cut my palm. I learned to love the hiss of silence on the tape after a song ended, the sound of time like the susurrus of insects at dusk, like a broom whisking clean the floor of some upper room. I learned how to walk the perimeter of the house and feel in the grass the edges of the old foundation, a version of house that burned, that disappeared, that was rewritten, and I learned how to walk farther out into the pastures, to spot the earthen mounds left behind by people who remain only in names of rivers and country roads. That was one summer. Decades later, I learned that the barn I painted was not even the original, which had been replaced, board by beam, years before. And I learned that barns are red because red paint is cheap because iron is abundant because dying stars sighed iron atoms into space and those atoms gathered here on earth, became the earth, became blood and arrowheads and steel girders holding up towers and the red paint of barns. Ghost as Naked Man “Gender is a kind of imitation of which there is no original.”—Judith Butler Take away his beard, his hairy flanks. Lick your thumb and smear off his Adam's apple. Lift away his penis like a live bomb, and bury it under a mountain. Hide the testicles behind a broad leaf. But look, he still goes around town pointing at things he wants and moaning, rattling his imaginary chains. Every time he sees his reflection in a shop window, he cuts a thumb and with the blood paints over gaps in his shimmering reflection. Then he takes a brick and breaks the glass. There, he says, look what I made.

As Ireland accelerates its offshore renewable energy ambitions, a new initiative is underway to safeguard marine ecosystems from underwater noise pollution, a growing global environmental concern. The Irish Marine Acoustics Platform (IMAP) research?project will establish Ireland's first systematic underwater acoustic monitoring programme. This noise monitoring programme will help to protect marine life by identifying, managing and mitigating the underwater radiated noise (URN) pollution which may occur during the building of offshore wind farms. Launched in April of this year, the project will run until December 2028 and is funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and the Marine Institute (MI) with the MaREI Centre in University College Cork (UCC) and Wind Energy Ireland as project partners. The project will record annual and seasonal variations in ambient sound levels throughout Irish coastal waters using hydrophones. These devices will be strategically placed around the entire Irish coastline, in line with proposed locations for offshore developments. Using advanced analytics, modelling and data infrastructure, the programme will enable offshore developers to ensure an appropriate balance is met between the need to develop renewable energy and the need to conserve our marine biodiversity. On conclusion of the research project, the data collected will be used to establish an underwater noise baseline to be used to determine future project viability. The IMAP project will also create expertise in a growing research area and provide the necessary underwater equipment to continue future exploration. Speaking about the research, Gerry Sutton, IMAP Project Lead at University College Cork, said: "This acoustic baseline project will help ensure Ireland's green energy transition doesn't come at the cost of our marine ecosystems. It is a critical step toward responsible development and will help to ensure that Ireland's offshore expansion proceeds sustainably, minimising ecological risks while cutting the carbon emissions which put marine life in danger." Kerrie Sheehan, Head of Research, Innovation and Electricity at the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, added: "SEAI is pleased to support this project, which aligns with Ireland's ambitious goals for expanding the offshore wind sector to meet government targets for 2030 and 2050. "Co-funded by the Marine Institute, the project will investigate the potential impacts of underwater noise pollution from offshore infrastructure on marine ecosystems. The data collected, along with an online research portal, will serve as a vital resource for informed decision-making during the planning stages of offshore developments. "This initiative will help safeguard marine life while accelerating Ireland's transition to clean energy." Further information on the project can be found at https://info.windenergyireland.com/en-ie/imap.

Evangelical voters have long supported Republican candidates, but who identifies as an evangelical Christian has changed over the years. A recent article written in The New York Times by Ruth Graham and Charles Homans argues that Trump is attracting a different kind of evangelical - one who loves their country and believes in God, but doesn't actually go to church. Katelyn Beaty joins Phil and Kaitlyn to discuss the trend and why they aren't as concerned this election cycle as previous ones. Then, Kaitlyn sits down with Michael Wear to discuss his new book, The Spirit of Our Politics: Spiritual Formation and the Renovation of Public Life. He explains how he uses the teachings of Dallas Willard to talk about how Christians should engage in politics and what it would look like to place our politics under our spiritual formation.
