"If you've ever thought, ‘I'm not qualified to be a creator,' this episode is for you."This special episode of TACO Talks features a full chapter readings from The Art of Digital Influence, a book by Al Descheneau (aka XtianNinja), read by Scott Carpenter (aka The Born Again Gamer). Written to encourage and equip Christian content creators, the book explores how faith and digital influence intersect in powerful ways.Chapter 1, “Who Me? A Creator?”, speaks directly to the fears and doubts that keep many from stepping into their God-given calling. Drawing from the story of Moses, it reminds us that God often works through the least likely people—and that your voice matters more than you think.Subscribe to hear future chapters as they're released alongside our regular episodes. Scott Carpenter crafted the very first synthetic baseball glove used in an MLB game in 2011. And the list of MLB player gloves he's worked on is impressive, including the glove of the 2016 World Series MVP, Ben Zobrist. In the early 2000's, Scott left a successful career in the New York City art scene to pursue his youthful passion of baseball gloves. This took him to rural Ava, MO to work at a Rawlings factory as a janitor during the final year it produced gloves in the United States. While in Ava, he picked everyone's brain in the factory about glove design, including the legendary Rawlings designer, Bob Clevenhagen. From Ava, his next move was to Cooperstown, NY to learn the full history of baseball gloves at the Hall of Fame and predict their future. He determined the future was synthetics. With this conviction in mind, he started his brand, Carpenter Trade. And as mentioned earlier, he eventually crafted the first all synthetic glove used by an MLB player named Brian Gordon of the New York Yankees. At the same time, he was crafting the most ergonomic hand stalls for gloves and started getting requests from MLB players, like Ben Zobrist, to have their gloves modified.Ultimately, his work started to be noticed in the market and Marucci picked him up to help lead their glove design team. In his time at Marucci, his synthetic gloves and ergonomic hand stalls became widely known through Marucci's C-Mod and C-Type gloves. After a handful of years at Marucci, Scott is back working on his own. Currently, he is crafting Nexguard thumb protectors, which are considered by many to be the premier catcher thumb guard available. And very soon he hopes to be back crafting or modifying gloves for the best baseball players in the world.

fWotD Episode 2531: Mercury Seven Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Tuesday, 9 April 2024 is Mercury Seven. The Mercury Seven were the group of seven astronauts selected to fly spacecraft for Project Mercury. They are also referred to as the Original Seven and Astronaut Group 1. Their names were publicly announced by NASA on April 9, 1959; these seven original American astronauts were Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. The Mercury Seven created a new profession in the United States, and established the image of the American astronaut for decades to come. All of the Mercury Seven eventually flew in space. They piloted the six spaceflights of the Mercury program that had an astronaut on board from May 1961 to May 1963, and members of the group flew on all of the NASA human spaceflight programs of the 20th century – Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and the Space Shuttle.Shepard became the first American to enter space in 1961, and walked on the Moon on Apollo 14 in 1971. Grissom flew the first crewed Gemini mission in 1965, but died in 1967 in the Apollo 1 fire; the others all survived past retirement from service. Schirra flew Apollo 7 in 1968, the first crewed Apollo mission, in Grissom's place. Slayton, grounded with an atrial fibrillation, ultimately flew on the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project in 1975. The first American in orbit in 1962, Glenn flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1998 to become, at age 77, the oldest person to fly in space at the time. He was the last living member of the Mercury Seven when he died in 2016 at age 95.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:33 UTC on Tuesday, 9 April 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Mercury Seven on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Matthew Neural.
Defeating Adversity Through Writing Lori Keesey She's written for daily newspapers and trade publications and her freelance work has appeared in regional and trade magazines, specifically those specializing in space exploration. Yes, Lori was a space junkie, and worked for NASA in public outreach for nearly 20 years. She calls herself and “accidental entrepreneur” and started the “Accidental Blogger” to help build an author platform, where she shares stories of overcoming adversity. She knows a thing or two, unfortunately, about that subject, as she faced her own tragedy when she lost her 33 year old son. Lori Keesey considers herself among the lucky. Recently retired, Lori enjoyed a 40-plus-year career as a writer and now has time to pursue her childhood dream of writing fictional characters who make a difference. She is launching her first novel, “Always Think of Me” in April of 2024. I read you worked for nearly 20 years with NASA in public outreach. I've been an avid space nut since about the age of 3. One of my earliest memories is watching Scott Carpenter on the first American suborbital flight in 1962. In fact, I just returned from a trip to south Texas where I visited Stargate, where Elon Musk is launching his rockets. So I have to be careful and not let our conversation today start to take on a flight all its own… Let's start with what motivated you to begin the “Accidental Blogger.” Was it a way to deal with your son's death? How did your Faith help you deal with everything at that time? Does tragedy tend to challenge or change someone's belief in God? I read that you came to the realization that he belonged to God his whole life, and was just “on loan to you” until his mission was completed. How did you come to that realization? I read that you came to the realization that tragedy comes in different forms our entire life. Can you explain for us what you mean by that? You also said that you measure time differently now. You reference pre and post tragedy. Do you find others use the same time measure after their experiences? People react differently when they experience some sort of tragedy. Some are angry, others sad. Still some have regret. Are all of these just moving through the different stages of grief differently or are they truly dealing with it in different manners? You also interviewed John Carter Cash about dealing with his addiction and, I guess you could say, how it runs in the family. What was the one thing you took from that interview that still sticks in your mind today? Let's shift to a discussion about your book, “Always Think of Me.” Why did you write this book and why publish now? I know it's supposed to be published soon… April (2024), correct? This is a novel. Can you give us a brief synopsis of the book? I'm not going to ask “who” inspired this story – but does it have some reality included that affected you in some way? When will it be available for sale? I have one more question for you that came out of the research I was doing to get ready for our interview today… Can you share with us a little bit about an interview you did with a publicity shy multimillionaire who shared his reasoning for his relentless pursuit of wealth. What were the reasons he shared with you in that interview?...

This Reloaded Monday is dedicated to my friend, Scott Carpenter. In episode 524: Bigfoot and Dogman Nephilim DNA we are joined by Scott Carpenter. I was in a local pizzeria called Legends and Lore Pizzaria and in talking to the owner he informed me that Scott Carpenter, the author of The Nephilim Among Us, lives in the same town my studio is located in. So we reached out to Scott and brought him to the studio for a fantastic conversation. Scott was someone that laughed at people who believe bigfoot existed and probably thought someone should be institutionalized when claiming they have seen one. All that stopped one day while fishing and encountering a bigfoot himself. Once that happened he did a 360 and started to research everything he could about them. He would go out in the woods with cameras strapped to his body to catch as many video hours as possible to increase his chance of catching something on film. The more he researched and the more he went out, the more he learned bigfoot was not the only creature that roams these East Tennessee hills. He's had dogman encounters, little people encounter, and portal sightings which all lead him to believe there is more to these cryptids than just being hairy creatures living in the forest. Today's guest is one of Watchpro's Hot 100, the NOS, LNIB Eric Wind, founder of Wind Vintage. We welcome Eric back, to chat (unsurprisingly), about vintage watches. Given what's been happening in the world of high-priced vintage timepieces, it's unsurprising that we end up talking about integrity, legitimacy and if high prices and high expectations will lead to trouble down the road. We also find time to get a bit of a behind-the-scenes look at the sale of Scott Carpenter's Speedy, and find out that if NBA draftees can rock a 36mm watch, you can too. We are thrilled to converse with the legendary Bruce Merrin today! Bruce is the mastermind behind the renowned Celebrity Speakers Bureau and has been a driving force in shaping the entertainment industry for over fifty years! With an unparalleled ability to spot talent and bring together remarkable individuals, he has curated a legacy that has left an indelible mark on Hollywood. From the quick-witted banter of Johnny Carson to the heartfelt charm exuded by Michael Landon, and from the unmatched charisma of Muhammad Ali to his mesmerizing encounter with the iconic Elvis Presley, Bruce has had the privilege of experiencing captivating stories from the forefront of the industry. Join us as we embark on an unforgettable journey through the glitz, glamor, and untold secrets of the stars through the eyes of the man who made it his mission to bring their voice to the world! Where it all started for Bruce It all began fifty years ago with his first celebrity client, the iconic Michael Landon! In a lunch meeting, Michael shared his excitement about a new show he was working on called Little House on the Prairie. Bruce immediately took Michael to appear on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, who happened to adore him! After the show, Johnny invited Bruce and Michael to his lavish Malibu home for dinner and proposed a life-changing idea. He suggested that Bruce start a celebrity speakers bureau, with Johnny as the first client. Bruce agreed, and Michael Landon declared himself the second client! The next day, Ed McMahon reached out to Bruce to express his desire to join the bureau. The Influence of His Mother Bruce credits his beloved mother for the incredible opportunities and successes he experienced throughout his career. From encouraging him to pursue journalism classes in high school to suggesting he apply to UCLA's prestigious film school, his mother played a pivotal role in shaping his path. Her guidance led him to secure a job at MGM Studios, where he worked in the renowned Thalberg building. Bruce's Mother As a pioneer in public relations, Bruce's mother operated a successful Hollywood-based entertainment PR firm. She recognized Bruce's talents and potential and made him an enticing offer to join her at General Service Movie Studios, where she continued teaching him the intricacies of the PR business. In the three years Bruce worked with his mother, he gained invaluable knowledge and experience, particularly in handling high-profile authors. Simon and Schuster Securing the account of Simon and Schuster, the world's largest publisher, was a remarkable achievement because it allowed Bruce and his mother to handle the monthly PR for all their top authors. A Remarkable Invitation Within his first week at MGM, Bruce received a remarkable invitation from the president himself- a lunch meeting with Elvis Presley! That encounter marked the beginning of Bruce's involvement in handling the publicity for Elvis's film, Elvis on Tour, which cemented his connection with the legendary performer. Elvis Presley Elvis, known for his humility, treated everyone with kindness and generosity, whether they were part of the film crew or fellow performers. Bruce was privileged to work with Elvis on multiple films and witnessed the star's genuine thoughtfulness. After completing a movie, Elvis would gift extravagant presents to the entire staff, including directors, producers, grips, and sound technicians! Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson left indelible marks on Bruce, not only for their athletic achievements but also for their resilience and powerful messages. Bruce had had meaningful exchanges with both of them about addressing racism and its ugly consequences. Ali and Robinson exemplified strength and integrity in their respective fields and left lasting impressions on Bruce's life and career. Scott Carpenter's Troubled Appearance Bruce had a notable incident involving Scott Carpenter, one of the original seven astronauts, whom he had booked for a speaking engagement in Orlando. Scott arrived intoxicated, leaving the event organizers in a difficult situation. In spite of the embarrassment, Bruce still considered Scott's well-being and urged him to seek help for his alcoholism. Scott later addressed his struggles in a book and found a path to recovery. Custom-Tailoring Celebrity Talks When booking celebrities, Bruce connects them with certified meeting planners to discuss the event's theme, demographics, and audience. That allows the celebrities to craft talks that will resonate with the attendees on a deeper level. Randy Otto Randy Otto has a deep understanding of Churchill's persona. That, combined with his dedication to studying and embodying the iconic figure, allows him to deliver impactful speeches that provide insights into managing businesses effectively. Bruce emphasizes the power of well-crafted impersonations and personalized talks in captivating audiences and making a lasting impression. Negotiating Terms When negotiating with celebrities, Bruce emphasizes the importance of being clear about the keynote fee and establishing additional activities, such as roundtables or photo sessions, as part of the overall agreement. Bruce's Advice for Negotiating Celebrity Bookings Bruce highlights the importance of setting clear expectations when booking celebrities and negotiating their terms. By establishing a comprehensive agreement upfront, event planners will ensure a smooth and satisfactory experience for all parties involved. Bio: Bruce Merrin I was born in Louisville, KY, and my client Muhammad Ali loved that! We talked about that a lot! I graduated from Grant High School in San Fernando Valley, CA, and my best friends were Tom Selleck, Mickey Dolenz (The Monkees), Mike Curb (Curb Records Nashville), Mike Post (12 number-one hits to TV series like Hill St. Blues and Law and Order), John Washbrook (TV star of My friend Flicka). My girlfriend at Grant was Cheryl from The Mouseketeers Show, with gorgeous blonde hair and blue eyes. I graduated from the legendary UCLA Film School. While I was there, I starred in the Broadway hit play Tea and Sympathy. I had the lead role. Unforgettable experience! My acting teacher recommended only me to audition for Hollywood Squares. I got on the show and won the Secret Square with Paul Lynde, with tens of thousands of dollars in prizes! My mom suggested after graduating from UCLA that I apply for a job at MGM Studios. I got a gem job working in the Thalberg Building. My first client was Elvis in his film, Elvis on Tour. I had a memorable lunch with Elvis in the commissary and told him "We are going to get along great...we are both MAMA's BOYS!" I then joined my beloved mom's historic entertainment PR Firm at General Service Studios in Hollywood. Mom was one of only two women who had Hollywood PR firms. For three years, she taught me the PR business. I owe everything to my Mom! During the first week working for Mom, I walk into the office and Oscar Academy Award winner Joan Crawford is seated at moms desk! Joan gets up, hugs me, and says, “Your mom is the BEST PR exec that has ever represented me!”. George Burns was our next-door office member at the movie studio. Many movies and hit TV series were shot there. One day Mom told me that Michael Landon was shooting a film. I got entrance into the stage set, met Michael, and gave him my business card. He became my first PR client. Working with mom, Simon & Schuster was our client. Every month, we had a number one S&S author. We set national tours for them. It was an invaluable experience! Mom taught me how to handle entertainment PR. Invaluable! After three years, I launched my own PR Firm. My first two entertainment clients were Michael Landon and Johnny Carson. My first two sports star clients were Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali. You have heard the Johnny Carson story. After booking Michael Landon on the Carson show, Johnny invited us to dinner at his Malibu home. Johnny toasted us with Cabernet Sauvignon and told me to start a Celebrity Speakers Bureau. Johnny said he would be my first client. Michael then chimed in, and Ed McMahon called me the next day. So, Bruce Merrin's Celebrity Speakers & Ent was launched FIFTY YEARS ago! The U.S. space program was launched, so to speak, in 1959, when the first seven Mercury astronauts were named. These pioneers laid the groundwork for the Gemini, Apollo, and space shuttle missions that would follow in coming years and decades. Among those seven was a 36-year-old test pilot named Wally Schirra. Over the next few years he would become a household name, along with those like John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, and Alan Shepard. Finally, in 1988, Schirra wrote his autobiography. And that's when I had a chance to meet him
