In 2019 you won the UCI Masters World Championship at Mont St. Anne when you were in your 40s. What's allowed you to be so fast for so long? How much of DH racing is about equipment vs. rider? Did you get involved in building bikes out of necessity, or was it something you really enjoyed from the beginning? Tell us about the Canfield Balance Formula suspension design. Is it primarily focused on pedal efficiency? What does "controlled braking" mean? Is designing suspension for a DH bike easier in some ways since you aren't as concerned about pedal efficiency? CF3 is a newer, patent pending suspension design. How is that different from CBF? With the expiration of the original DW Link patent, does this open opportunities for new designs and/or improvements? Is it difficult working with bike brands as a suspension designer? Does your design end up getting compromised in some ways? What does the Vampire Bikes customer look like? Lance Canfield is a mechanical engineer and former professional mountain bike racer who drew his first mountain bike design in 1996. Today his bike brand, Canfield Bikes, sells mountain bikes and components designed and tested in Poncha Springs, Colorado. What were downhill bikes like when you began racing in 1994? What did you want to improve about your bike? Your first bike design in 1999, the Big Fat Fatty Fat, had 12 inches of travel front and rear. How did that work? You competed on some of your own bikes in Red Bull Rampage, including at the first competition ever in 2001. What was it like? How did it compare to today's spectacle? Why do you think there aren't many (any?) dedicated freeride bikes on the market today? What makes the Canfield Balance Formula (CBF) suspension design different from others on the market? Is CBF better suited for certain applications or travel ranges? Why are you such a proponent of shorter cranks for mountain biking? How has Canfield been affected by industry supply fluctuations over the past few years? What's next for Canfield? Which mountain bike developments or trends have you excited about the future? Luckily for us, Tim is a man with a plan and offers hands on experience, and with that solutions and ideas on how we can get involved. It's high time for trail runners to take action. On September 2, 2024 Michelino Sunseri set a new speed record on Grand Teton in 2h 50m 50s. It was supposed to be a new FKT, beating an old record that has stood for over 12 years. What ensued afterwards turned an epic run into a much talked about news story, a social media fire storm, and an eventual lawsuit. Friend of Michelino, Alex Rienzie was out on the trails that day and shares his observations and some background info on all of it. We celebrated huge beating genius machines before this awesome episode! The main training topic was on 10 ways our training approaches changed for Leadville and Javelina. Throughout the process of preparing for 100 miles, we made itty bitty alterations that sometimes became big shifts in how our plans usually look. We break down each of them and how they might apply to other athletes. Time to pop a squat (or 2 x 10 reps of them). Before that, we have a little love letter to listeners. That consists of a new playlist to motivate training, a SWAP hat release, some thoughts on celebration and next steps, and also some sadness about crap that we can't control. Thank you all for giving us a space to be open and authentic, especially when we're unsure what to say. And this one had tons of great topics! Other topics: the Big Dump Truck Energy playlist, the poem How To Triumph Like a Girl, a question on balancing motivation and health, the new 100-mile training plan, a wonderful article on ultra performance that posits that muscle damage is the main limiter, why we think the trainability of running economy is being overlooked, how to think about using feel v. heart rate in harder efforts, David's interview on the Singletrack podcast, heat training in the cycling peloton, some hot takes that become cold takes on the future of heat training, and Listener Corner. A lyric that ran through our heads last week was from Bo Burnham: “I want to help to leave this world better than I found it / And I fear that comedy won't help / And the fear is not unfounded.” We are recommitting to love. Raging with love. We love you all! HUZZAH! Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes!Anton Krupicka is back on the podcast! Few athletes in ultrarunning generate as much excitement as Anton, and he's returned with a bang—recently setting a fastest known time on the iconic LA Freeway route and securing second place finish at the Grindstone 100 this past weekend.Beyond his impressive athletic achievements, which notably helped shape the ultrarunning culture in the late 2000s and early 2010s, Anton is a thoughtful and generous conversationalist. He shares plenty of insights in this episode. While the FKT and race results provide a backdrop, we also dive deeper into nostalgic ultrarunning memories (his friendships with Scott Jurek, Geoff Roes, and Kyle Skaggs), engaging discussions on philosophy (athlete personalities and bike culture), current events (Leadville 100), and his aspirations (UTMB and Hardrock goals). Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes! This past Saturday night at 11:53 PM, Tara Dower set the fastest known time on the Appalachian Trail in 40 days 18 hours 5 minutes, besting Karel Sabbe's 2018 mark by 13 hours and 32 minutes.Starting August 12th at 5:47 AM, Dower averaged 54+ miles per day over 2,197.4 miles of rugged and relentless terrain from Maine to Georgia to set the mark.In masterfully riding a fine line of passion, grit, faith, and resourcefulness, Tara and her crew have set a new standard on this trail. I said this on an Instagram post shortly after the news broke, but I'll say it here as well - it's easy to get caught up in the moment, especially in a year that has seen the likes of the first female Barkley finisher, a UTMB course record, and a Hardrock course record - but is this the female performance of the year? Or better yet, is this the overall performance of the year regardless of gender? This is an amazing time to be in the sport. With all that said, we were fortunate to have Tara on the podcast shortly after her feat. In this conversation, we cover topics all about the Appalachian Trail record around her background, preparation, strategy, execution, mindset, and processing of this monumental achievement. If you want more long-distance hiking trail or Appalachian Trail trail-specific content, be sure to check out our interviews with Will Peterson, Warren Doyle, and Jennifer Pharr Davis from the past year. Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes! After reading her book, "The Longest Race: Inside the Secret World of Abuse, Doping, and Deception on Nike's Elite Running Team", I was eager to connect with Kara Goucher for an in-depth conversation. For those less familiar with the road running scene, Kara was one of the top American distance runners of the 2000s and 2010s, achieving podium finishes at prestigious events like the Boston and New York City Marathons, as well as the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials. She also claimed victory at the US Half Marathon Championships the same year, among numerous other accolades. In 2004, she joined the Nike Oregon Project, led by distance running legend Alberto Salazar. Behind the scenes, however, Salazar was pushing the boundaries of anti-doping regulations while fostering a toxic culture of misogyny and athlete abuse. Despite the risk of losing everything and facing immense pressure, Kara found the courage to speak out and successfully advocate for meaningful change. In our discussion, we explore various themes from The Longest Race, and we also discuss current events, including her podcast with Des Linden - "Nobody Asked Us", and the challenges with today's anti-doping investigative models. Before we dive in, please note that this episode is a crossover from my guest-hosting stint on the Run To The Top podcast earlier this spring.
