WBUR's Radio Boston spoke with Globe Reporter Tiana Woodard about these unlicensed radio stations — most of which cater to the Haitian community — and why the FCC is threatening to shut them down. We also spoke with Danielle Johnson, founder and CEO of the digital radio station Spark FM.
Danielle was born in Boston, Massachusetts; she is a mom, a radio personality, speaker, MC, and creator. In 2020, she launched her own digital radio station in Boston, Spark FM, thus making her the FIRST Black woman to own a digital radio station in Boston. She is ALSO (because of course there's more) the co-founder of Bsoccah as well as the host of Saucy and friends in the AM. Did I mention she was awarded One of the most influential Bostonians....TWICE!! I am beyond honored to have her as a guest and hope you enjoy our Season 5 opener!!! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/shoutalks/support
A bit of a first for PHUK. We're introducing Dave Moyle who has produced an entire mix of his own productions, which we've never done before on this podcast. It is therefore a very unique journey and adds to the variety of talent we offer and showcase on this podcast.Hugely inspired by music during his childhood, Dave became captivated by the sounds around him, ranging from various genres and movie soundtracks. He would often attempt to mix two tapes or even vinyl with tapes to create a unique blend of music. As he grew older, he frequented local events and clubs, where he was enamored by the DJs spinning and mixing tunes. This led him to purchase a set of turntables and he has been mixing ever since, covering all genres of music including 80s, 90s, Dance, House & Trance.Dave drew inspiration from well-known DJs like Armin Van Burren, Above & Beyond, Judge Jules, and Pete Tong, whom he admired for their work on their Radio 1 shows. He honed his skills in music production during his twenties, learning and perfecting his own style and sound. Dave has been a warm-up DJ for well-known artists such as Lange, Scott Bond, Solerstone, Dave Pearce, Manuel la Saux and Lee Haslem. He has also played on radio stations such as Sunderland's Spark FM, Unite Radio based in County Durham, and AATM in London. Dave has had numerous releases on record labels like Neostatics Sounds, Affiliate, Green Nights Records, and Blank Capsule Records, with many unreleased tracks on his Soundcloud account. His current sound is very unique and original, featuring nods to the 80s and 90s with melodic progressions and movie-inspired tranced-out beats. Sit back and enjoy something a little different.Tracklist: Dave Moyle - Thunderstorm Dave Moyle - Tequila Sunrise Dave Moyle - Enforcer Dave Moyle - Invasion Dave Moyle - Muscle Car Dave Moyle - Farewell Dance Dave Moyle - New Horizons Dave Moyle - Neon Touch Dave Moyle - Sirens Dave Moyle - Miami Vice Dave Moyle - Shout Dave Moyle - Trip To Mars (Unreleased Mix) Dave Moyle - Titan Moon Dave Moyle - Tengoku (Unreleased Mix) Three Drives On A Vinyl - Greece 2000 - (Dave Moyle Remix) Find more about Dave Moyle on his Soundcloud account

“Born Vanda Bernadeau in Hinche, Haiti to a Haitian mother and Haitian-Dominican father, Dutch ReBelle is known for “mixing introspective, punch-lined filled lyrics with heart pounding production”. ReBelle earned national attention early on with electrifying performances at SXSW, A3C and the Brooklyn Hip-Hop festival. Publications like XXL noted ReBelle “spearheading her way into blogs because of her poetic style…lyrical bravado…and fiery talent.” Having earned the title “Queen of the Bean,” ReBelle solidified her local reputation as a “ReBelle with a Cause” (The Boston Globe) with her 2012 “Married to the Music” EP. Soon after her “Sunday Morning” music video was featured on MTV’s Rap Fix Live, ReBelle was named “Best Hip-Hop Artist” by the Boston Music Awards and featured on the cover of The Improper Bostonian. Ms. “kiss kiss, BANG BANG” has found success defying expectations and is now cultivating a global audience. With last year’s release of “NO STEMS”, reintroducing ReBelle reintroduced her rap roots with sounds inspired by her Haitian-Dominican upbringing and recent festival performance in Africa.
Recap of #djkillad on www.sparkfmonline.com Every Saturday from 8am-10am
We sat with DJ, entrepreneur, and the first black woman to own a digital radio station, Ms. Hot Sauce – AKA Danielle O Johnson. This is probably the most raunchy episode we have ever done, which isn’t really saying much because, well, Ron and I are kinda like saints without the two required miracles. But we do have some inappropriate language in this episode, so block your child's ears as you listen and make this episode go. crazy viral!Danielle started Spark FM just this past year and she has been working hard to build a company that promotes the music and voices that should be heard. Her own podcast called Henny and Hot Wings is not for the faint of heart as their very popular show is described as an “Exciting, exuberant, and sometimes x-rated personal lifestyle Podcast”.We tried to keep up with the x-rated conversation to try and fit in. We did our best. Either way, we had some great laughs with Danielle and we are glad you could join us.

Episode 22 of 99% Perspiration Joanna Makepeace-Woods knows a thing or two about powerful pitching. She gained her previous role, Talent Development Manager at the University of Sunderland, through pitching it to the staff there. They were so impressed, so inspired, that they devised the role specifically for Joanna, and she's been there ever since. Now Joanna is the Employability Manager with the university’s Arts, Design and Media faculty, and works with graduates and students to get them into the workplace. She understands well the importance of networking, and getting your name out there. I’ve listened to your feedback - some of you told me you wanted to hear more from people who help develop creatives, rather than just from creatives themselves; and Joanna Makepeace-Woods is just that person. Joanna also worked in multiple TV roles, mostly in the production office, so this episode should be particularly interesting if you're interested in getting more stuck in with TV. ---------- A little aside: I mentioned here in the description (but alas, not on the podcast) last episode that my radio drama, SeaBurn, was been nominated for "Best Speech Programming" at the Student Radio Awards 2015, one of 8 nominations from Spark FM in Sunderland, the community radio station I volunteer with. I'm hugely happy to report that SeaBurn received a bronze award for "Best Speech Programming"; we couldn't have lost out to a better programme though, the incredible Both Sides of Dying by radio producer Jordy Cernik took the gold. And Spark itself received a bronze for "Best Radio Station".
