It's the Dish Easter special and Nick and Angela are joined for dinner by JADE. JADE is a singer/songwriter already making her mark as a solo artist. Born and raised in South Shields, JADE was part of the chart conquering girl group Little Mix, who were formed on The X Factor in 2011. Little Mix went on to release six studio albums and won a BRIT Award for British Group in 2021 before going on hiatus. JADE has since released her debut single Angel of my Dreams, followed up by the single FUFN, the video for which stars our very own Nick Grimshaw. JADE's had a busy start to 2025 with a massive night at this year's BRIT Awards, where she landed a huge performance and won her first BRIT as a solo artist. Alongside the release of her debut album, JADE is also due to perform at Glastonbury, with Nick and Angela hoping to be on the front row. She is also a huge fan of roasts. And we mean huge. Which is lucky because Angela has prepared two recipes by Paul Gamble; Roast lamb with boulangère-style vegetables and Chargrilled green vegetables with wild garlic salsa verde. This is accompanied by El Rayo Olarra Rioja Crianza. The conversation begins with a mojito, a cocktail making its Dish debut. This episode is the perfect Easter lunch, with JADE bringing her passion for roasts, gravy and potatoes while looking back at her first steps as a solo artist - including that big night at the BRITs. Side notes; Sadly the pistachio Easter egg mentioned by Nick was so popular it sold out! But we're confident you will find an equally moreish alternative in store or online. We are doing a live episode in Sheffield! On Friday 4th July, Dish will be at The Crucible Theatre at Crossed Wires Festival. Nick and Angela will be joined by a special guest for their second ever live show. Tickets are available now at crossedwires.live. You can now watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help. Send your dilemmas to dish@waitrose.co.uk and she'll try to answer them in a future episode. Dish from Waitrose is made by Cold Glass Productions.

In episode 277 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Earl John Charlton. Earl is currently employed by Northumbria University as a professional with lived experience. However, prior to that he has worked as an outreach worker and a seller for The Big Issue, one of the most important charities in the UK for giving homeless people an income, dignity and pride. Earl spent 18 years of his life being homeless. His start in life began with trauma and violence as he witnessed his dad domestically abusing his mum from the ages of 3-13 years old. He was subsequently placed into the care system but ran away from it at 14 and became homeless for the first time until he was 19. He became a heroine and crack cocaine addict and stayed an addict for the next 19 years, as well as an addiction to alcohol for 20 years. He then became involved in drug gangs, running county lines for them to earn money and feed his addiction. His rock bottom moment came in 2013/14 after he had been in London for a few years when he put himself in serious danger after a dispute with one of the gangs. He managed to escape London through a friend and went back to the North East. By the time he had beat heroine and crack cocaine addiction in 2014, alcohol addiction in 2016 and a methadone addiction in 2018, Early had nearly died twice and nearly lost his leg three times. We came across Earl through his interview in a hugely powerful film by Lorna Tucker called ‘Someone's Daughter, Someone's Son', which highlights the plight of many homeless people across the UK. Since Earl has gotten clean, he has started giving back to his South Shields community by working as an outreach worker and putting on open-mic nights with musicians from the local community. He also got national media coverage when UK Rock artist Sam Fender came across Earl's story and they had a conversation you can find on YouTube. That has culminated in one song on Sam's upcoming new album ‘People Watching' being about Earl called ‘Crumbling Empire'. In this episode we chart Earl's life journey, from witnessing the domestic abuse, to the negative impact not having a positive father figure in his life had on him, being homeless for 18 years, becoming a father and then losing access to his son when his partner left him one day, the throes of addiction and his recovery to where he is now. We then discuss all the advocacy and community work he has done since getting clean, meeting Sam Fender and much more. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 29th of August 2024 We had a good week for HF propagation, at least until we had a Kp index of 5.67 on Wednesday the 28th. This was caused by the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field moving into a south-pointing position. Luckily, it didn't last long and geomagnetic conditions were back to normal by Thursday. The solar flux index remains above 200 with no sign of it dropping. But solar flare activity has not diminished either with 16 M-class flares over the past seven days and more than 60 C-class events. There remains a 55% chance of a further M-class flare and a 10% chance of an X-class event. Tuesday the 27th saw some good activity on the upper HF bands with the 10m band opening up at times. VK has been heard on 28MHz in the mornings, which bodes well for the coming months. The top DX choice this week has been CY9C on Saint Paul Island near Newfoundland. The team is active on all bands until the 5th of September using CW, SSB, FT8, Super Fox and RTTY. VOACAP Online shows that the 20 and 17m bands offer the best chance for a contact and are open from 0900 to 2000 UTC. The 30m band is another strong contender from 2000 to 1000 UTC. Next week, NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will start at around 250 but could end the week at 275. As always, it estimates the Kp index will be at 2 all week, but this will depend upon coronal mass ejections, so keep an eye on solarham.com for daily updates. If a solar flare and associated coronal mass ejections do occur, expect the Kp index to rise after about 48 hours, with a lowering of the maximum useable frequency. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The autumn season usually brings thoughts of Tropo since areas of high pressure can often be a feature of this time of year. Most models predict that there will be high pressure moving in to offer Tropo conditions today, the 1st. Thereafter, the models differ, and some bring low pressure over the country for much of the coming week, while others maintain a high-pressure story and the continuation of Tropo. This is potentially useful for the 144MHz UK Activity Contest on Tuesday and Wednesday and, if it lasts, the 144MHz Trophy Contest next weekend along with the Backpackers contest on Sunday the 8th. With the uncertain feel of the forecast at the moment, we may find rain scatter is the main option on the GHz bands. Meteor scatter is again reduced to non-shower random events with just a minor shower, the Aurigids, peaking on the 31st of August. This shower has produced brief unexpected outbursts with a zenithal hourly rate of around 30 to 50 per hour in 1935, 1986, 1994 and 2019. Random meteor flux is at its annual maximum in September with relatively good rates, especially during morning hours. Pre-dawn is the best time to try. The solar conditions continue to provide chance auroras. Keep one eye on the Kp index and lock the frequency of some northern European beacons into your rig's memory. Lastly, it's the nominal end of the 2024 summer Sporadic-E season and the daily blogs on Propquest have finished. However, some years can produce surprise Sporadic-E events during the first week of September. Moon declination starts the weekend still high but falling, going negative again on Thursday the 5th. So, Moon visibility windows will also fall, as will the peak Moon elevation. Moon apogee is also next Thursday so path losses are still increasing. 144MHz sky noise is low until Monday but, shortly after moonrise that day, the Sun and the Moon become close in the sky and continue to be until after moonset on Tuesday. This means sky noise will be very high, especially at VHF, due to wide antenna beamwidths. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Welcome to the Fairy Whispering podcast, where we delve into real encounters with fairies and the otherworld. I'm Claire, your Fairy whisperer and host. Join me as we explore who or what fairies are, how they reach out to us, and why they've connected with us for so long. This episode features Billy G W Morgan, who shares his fascinating experiences with a type of fairy called the Sidhe and with Bigfoot, or the Woodwoes as it's sometimes known in the UK. This is the first part of a two-part series, with the second part coming out next Wednesday. Billy's journey takes us from South Shields, England, to County Cavan, Ireland, with encounters ranging from seeing pixie boots to hearing crashing trees and eventually meeting "the forgotten people" in a meditative state. Thank you to artist CG Michaels for the stunning artwork of Bigfoot for this episode. Perrie Edwards hails from South Shields and has musical roots - her mum was a soul singer and her dad played in rock bands on the northern club scene for many years. Perrie had to be convinced to audition for The X Factor at 17, but went on to win the show with Little Mix in 2011. The band scored five UK number one singles and became the first British girl group since the Spice Girls to have a debut album enter the top five in the US. In 2022, Little Mix decided to take a hiatus from music to be with their families and now are pursuing solo projects. Perrie released her debut single Forget About Us, written by Ed Sheeran, in April and her second single Tears is out now. She has been in the studio with RAYE working on her upcoming album, which is due for release later this year. Perrie loves Indian food, so Angela obliges with some tasty green tikka masala chicken skewers. The experts at Waitrose pair this meal with a light and summery Côte des Roses Organic Languedoc rosé. Nick and Perrie know each other from the Radio 1 days and catch up on life after Little Mix. This episode could be described as confessional, with Perrie admitting she regularly forgets dance routines, orders mostly takeaways for tea and cannot stop watching Naked Attraction. Just so you know, our podcast might contain the occasional mild swear word or adult theme. This week bumper show and one all about the people and not necessarily the lifting of trophies, despite the time of the season. First up a fan who has had a week he will surely always remember but perhaps not for the best of reasons. Dean Knight this time last week was a typical fan helping organise a supporters bus to a play-off chasing match at the weekend. On Saturday evening he was being rushed to hospital 120 miles from home after a bus crash left him and another 15 or so South Shields fans injured and shaken up. Thankfully, everybody survived and are on the mend, but it was the reaction from fellow fans, fans from all clubs even rivals that captured my attention and captured the heart of Dean as the non league football family pulled together. Talking about the non league family pulling together. My next guest is a Chairman who has been the focus of some ridicule since coming into the game. However, back to back promotions for his Real Bedford side and new investment from American Billionaires, suggest Peter McCormack might just be onto to something with his non traditional approach. Rounding it all up is The Non League Paper's Jon Couch, previewing the National League's final set of normal fixtures, managerial changes and the scrapping of FA Cup Replays in the proper rounds.
On Tuesday 31st May 1932, in a place she had dubbed ‘The Love Hut', although the evidence stated that (in a drunk and emotional state) Elvira shot her lover to death, the circumstances of the murder was so dubious - that the truth was easily whitewashed by an adoring press who were so besotted by this beautiful but vapid rich kid - that they made her the only victim, and him the absolute culprit.Murder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael of Murder Mile UK True Crime Podcast with the main musical themes written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name and additional music, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0. At the very edge of Empire, inscribed on a beautifully carved tombstone, there's a story of love across the tracks. On Hadrian's Wall a slave girl from Hertfordshire and a lonely traveller from Syria meet and marry. The story of Regina and Barates has inspired poets and writers eager for a simple love story to illuminate a dark and dangerous world. But how true might this be? What brought this couple together across cultures and thousands of miles? Was their alliance true love or forced marriage? Mary Beard tracks our couple from Palmyra to South Shields, revealing the cultural mix of the Empire and the power dynamics of slave and master with the help of Syrian poet, Nouri Al-Jarrah.Producer: Alasdair CrossExpert Contributors: Greg Woolf, University of California Los Angeles and Frances McIntosh, English HeritageCast: John Collingwood Bruce played by Josh Bryant-Jones and reading of The Stone Serpent by Tyler CameronTranslation of The Stone Serpent: Catherine CobhamArabic Translation: Samira KawarSpecial thanks to Alex Croom and Tyne and Wear Museums
Ex-offender Ricky Gleeson has set up HoodEx, a new sustainable clothing charity in South Shields, Tyne and Wear. Ricky has a remarkable back story – a deeply troubled, chequered past. His mother was in her teens when she had him, a single parent who struggled to cope with life. She became addicted to drugs and alcohol and had a series of difficult relationships. As a child, Ricky was moved from domestic abuse shelters to foster homes and eventually to children's homes and hostels. He ended up homeless, at times living rough and turning to petty crime. Somehow, he managed to turn his life around. He joined the Royal Navy, took up boxing, became a husband and father and found his way to a new life. And now in his 40s, he wants to help others who are in the same place as he was in. As he struggles to find suitable premises for his charity venture, he revisits some of the keys places in his past life. Producer: Mohini Patel
