Five & Thrive

Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes.  My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures. Beta Product of the Week: This week's Beta Product of the week is led by serial entrepreneur, David Moeller. The name of his company is called Keep Technologies and their main product is called Knight. If you live in a major city, car break-ins are a dime a dozen. Keep Technologies has built a hardware product that sits in a cup holder and does everything from deterring thieves from approaching the vehicle, to record video of the crime, to notify the owner, and provide continual monitoring after the break-in. Knight's design is simple with a natural logo - a chess knight – and the pre-orders are racking up. Keep an eye out for Keep Technologies. Link in bio.  Companies Worth Applying To:  An exciting opportunity in the construction software space has opened up. RedTeam headquartered in Orlando, which recently acquired paskr out of Nashville, is looking for a VP of Sales. I remember speaking to the founder of paskr years ago and remembering how good their product was and solving a deep and validated need in the market – and most of the sales then were founder-led. Now through an acquisition and growth capital provided by Braemont Capital, RedTeam is ready to step on the gas with the addition of a talented and experienced VP of Sales. This role is remote and a superb opportunity to take a strong product to market.  Another company worth applying to is also out of Nashville and this company is called Lasso. Angela Alea is the President and CRO. Lasso's software helps run live events. Their customers produce events including the Super Bowl, The Oscars, The Grammys, Dreamforce, and more by offering 6 different products that unify event staff management tasks into one easy workflow via scheduling, communication, onboarding, time tracking, and more. They were on this year's Inc 5000 list and looking for a VP of Sales, Engineering talent, Dev Ops and more.  Events to Put on the Calendar:  I know we're only in September but what better time to start planning for October as it is a very busy one in Atlanta. The Metro Atlanta Chamber put together a good list of several keystone events including Venture Atlanta, Fintech South, A3C, TechStars Demo Day, and much more. We put a link to the list. Pick and choose as there are plenty of great options.  Question of the Week: Can entrepreneurs be made? This is a topic we discuss a lot out of Atlanta Ventures and with our friends. Here's my take: entrepreneurship levels are on a continuum, almost no different than athletes. Can athletes be made? Sure. Are some predisposed to winning championships because of natural God-given ability? Absolutely. However, when we hone in on entrepreneurs, I believe there are thousands who would go start a company if the mechanisms were there. For example, this past weekend, I spent all weekend with a new friend from Nashville. He is one of the top sales reps at a large enterprise SaaS company, does very well, yet in addition to trouncing quota, he has several AirBnB's, a side blog on food, traditional real estate, and a few other entrepreneurial outlets. So he is already an athlete, he is already an entrepreneur. Now the question resides with every person who wants to build a company or any athlete pursuing a sport, how much sacrifice and commitment is one willing to make to achieve their ambitions. So now we just brought in three other factors: ambition (which is a huge one), commitment, and sacrifice. If you are a top sales rep or performer, it doesn't have to be in sales, at a premier SaaS company, and you have the itch to start something, those are all factors weighing in on your decision to startup something. Fortunately in today's environment, where companies are started quickly in thousands of niche markets, there are several options than traditional routes. More on that in due time!   Annnnd, that's 5 minutes. Thank you for listening to Five and Thrive. We provide 5 minutes of quality information, so you can thrive in the upcoming week. Please subscribe to the show and spread the good word!    Resources discussed in this episode:   Beta Product of the Week:  Keep Technologies Companies Worth Applying To: Redteam Paskr Lasso VP Lasso Events to Put on your Calendar:  Metro Atlanta Chamber

DISCLAIMER The following show is in no way advice on how you should invest into cryptocurrency, always do your own research and source out the information for yourself. Shawn Silva, an Engineering Technologist who created A3C to help others navigate the blockchain landscape and Marco Carlini, a salesperson in the concrete industry are here to share a lot about cryptocurrency, blockchain, NFT's and a whole lot more.On with the show. What is Blockchain? A blockchain is a distributed system that achieves security through cryptography and consensus without relying on trust.Nearly two years studying and investing in blockchain, Shawn has learned a lot from his initial $1000.00 investment in a few currencies and he has stuck with Cardano. He believes in the Cardano mandates as he dives deep into the founder, Charles Hoskinson, please look him up.Shawn and Marco discuss the Terra Luna crash over 3 days, where it went from $160.00 to worth 0.000019 and a lot of people lost their life savings and people committed suicide. Where did that money go? That is the fear. There are two types of Blockchains, Proof of Work and Proof of State and the guys break it all down. They discuss DeFi, there are two types of exchanges, secs and decs. When you create a blockchain there is a 3-pillar system, Security, Scalability, and Interoperability. Lessons to consider when investing, diversify and have one meme/joke coin because you never know. We discuss hot and cold storages and how to set them up and the term KYC Know Your Customer. Bottom line, do your research and source out the information and make informed decisions and never look at crypto as the quick rich entity that has been portrayed in the last decade.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.youtube.com/c/charleshoskinsoncryptohttps://messari.iohttps://koinly.iohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW2BPQ15OSwhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRvqjQPSeaWn-uEx-w0XOIghttps://www.youtube.com/c/CryptosRUshttps://empowa.iohttps://www.beeple-crap.comhttps://cardanotrees.comhttps://www.cryptoboons.comhttps://www.claynation.iohttps://www.unsigs.comhttps://trezor.ioThank you Shawn and Marco for sharing so much about the digital currency age quickly approaching all of us. On this Episode of Dad Is Not A Noun I had the opportunity to chat it up with Baton Rouge/Tulsa best kept secret Marcel P. Black on his music, fatherhood, and etc. Baton Rouge veteran emcee Marcel P. Black has already received high praise from some of the most well respected names in Hip-Hop. Most recently Marcel was featured on XXL.com's list “12 Baton Rouge Rappers You Should Know,” also highlighted on HipHopDX.com's “Up Next By DX” feature. A true grassroots, DIY, indie/underground emcee, Marcel balances being a leader in the Baton Rouge scene as he facilitates monthly and quarterly events in his local Hip-Hop community, and a pioneer/ambassador with a serious touring schedule that's led him to stages in every region of the United States, including festivals such as A3C in Atlanta, Georgia, the 2X2 Fest in Columbus, Ohio, Secret Stages in Birmingham, Alabama, and Jackson Indie Music Week in Jackson, Mississippi just to name a few. Next to Marcel's great music and work ethic, his claim to fame is his live show. A3C.com once describes Marcel's performance style as “Baptist Deacon meets Gangster Rapper meets Malcom X.” Marcel has shared stages with KRS-One, Common, Jay Electronica, Mobb Deep, Run The Jewelz, Kevin Gates, & Slum Village, Skyzoo, and Elzhi, as well as underground heavyweights like Supastition, Sean Price (R.I.P.), Clear Soul Forces, Blueprint, Locksmith, and MegaRan. Marcel has always used his platform as an emcee to bring light to social justice issues, from organizing benefits for National World Aids Day, organizing a benefit concert to raise money for the children of Alton Sterling, to speaking on panels and lecturing on the intersection between social justice and Hip-Hop in collegiate and high school classrooms. Marcel has worked in the field as a youth development worker for 18 years, most recently creating a curriculum and class called #FreeHipHop taught in middle and high schools in Baton Rouge. The husband/father/artist/activist/youth worker's goal is to use Hip-Hop culture as a conduit to freedom.

Hailing from Nashville,TN, Lord Goldie, also known as Karizma (a monicher aptly coined for her charismatic stage presence), has been a creative, an artist and an iconoclast since birth. In a town that has historically turned its back on the hip hop community, Lord Goldie exists in an authentic space that fuses underground hip hop, soul, and rock. During her formative years, Goldie was equally as inspired by Linkin Park, Jimi Hendrix, and Nirvana as she was by Jay-Z, Tupac, Queen Latifah, and UGK. It is now no surprise that she is well-versed in cross-genre collaboration and marrying distinct sounds into a cohesive story. Lord Goldie has carved a niche in the greater Nashville area, thus enabling her to release meaningful content consistently. This multi-hyphenate raps, writes, produces, and manages, offering creative direction to up-and-coming independent artists like herself. She released her debut project, Built 2 Last, in 2014 and has only gained momentum since then. The following year, part one of her EP series ADHD (Another Dollar Hustlin Daily) was met with rave reviews. In 2017, Goldie dropped music videos for singles “Day By Day” and “Like I'm Broke” on YouTube.   Interview with Mohan Koo, Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder of DTEX Systems and Hai Tran, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre (A3C). DTEX Systems has announced 2020 fiscal year new annual revenue growth of 300% over fiscal year 2019. DTEX has seen a sharp increase in global demand and adoption of its Workforce Cyber Intelligence platform which provides organizations a human-centric approach to insider threat protection, employee monitoring, remote workforce security, shadow IT awareness and data loss prevention while maintaining employee privacy and regulatory compliance. DTEX also achieved a 97 percent customer retention rate as customers adopted InTERCEPT 6.0, the company’s cloud-based next-generation insider threat solution. Key sectors of growth and accelerated customer adoption were seen in the financial services, manufacturing, oil and gas, chemical, technology, healthcare, and pharmaceutical industries. “DTEX’s focus on the human aspects of cybersecurity in addition to its technical leadership make them an invaluable addition to the A3C program,” said A3C CEO, Hai Tran. “A truly effective cybersecurity program must not only account for the data, machines and applications within an organization, but how the workforce that are using those tools on a day-to-day basis are trained, protected and supported. We support DTEX on its efforts to balance security with worker privacy and look forward to its continued collaboration with the A3C community.” Recorded 9 October, 2020 via Sydney and Adelaide.

Since 2006 twenty-seven year old Virginia native Emcee Bucky Malone (affectionally known as Little Tokyo) has been on a relentless grind to bring his community to the forefront of the rap game. After the passing of his grandmother, Bucky fell into a deep depression and used music as his outlet. With life getting the best of him, and controversary in his hometown, Bucky channeled all of that through his now classic project entitled 'L.I.F.E'; which solidfied him as a artist. Music Marketing Interview: Sunny da Man is a student in my courses ( www.marketingbigbox.com ) and now a friend of mine. He has really earned my respect by taking massive action. One of the best examples of this, which you will hear in the interview, is when I suggested to him instead of taking just Flyers to a conference he should make up water bottles with his name and music on them. It would create an opportunity to give to people, and serve them, instead of just asking them to come listen to him. He took that idea and made a lot of great connections, got a lot of standout attention, and was even stopped by A&R's. TOP TEN LESSONS INDIE ARTIST SHOULD TAKE AWAY FROM MY INTERVIEW WITH “SUNNY DA MAN” 1. “Do” - Take action make adjustments along the way 2. Hit the streets. (Go online to get offline) Network with Everybody! Grassroots guerilla marketing still works. 3. There are no losses, just lessons. 4. Master live shows. Have an actual rehearsed routine. 5. Do showcases but remember at the showcases……….THE NETWORKING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE PERFORMANCE. 6. Don’t just hide out in a studio for years making music. (See #1 and #5). 7. Stop procrastinating. Time lost can never be regaind. 8. Have something prepared to hand out everywhere you go. Flyers are good but get more creative. NEVER EVER SHOW UP WITHOUT SOMETHING TO GIVE OUT! 9. If you are serious about music….attend festivals like A3C. 10. Be patient. Make sure the quality of your work is in line with your brand. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the SAUCE HEIST interview session! We’re on a roll with in-studio interview sessions at the moment - we ran into the homie Sauce at A3C this year, and managed to catch him again this week while he was in town doing some work in the A. Sauce is fresh off the “Spanish Sauce” EP with producer Spanish Ran, so we get the run down on that project, why Sauce had a more calculated approach with the quantity of releases in 2019 and what he has in store for 2020 - we heard a snippet off-air, and it’s RIDICULOUS. Like always, we go back a few years and get the story on how Sauce got into the rap game, the influence his father and brother had on him musically and how traveling with this mother played a critical role in his outlook on life, the world and how he navigates it. Sauce also breaks down the origins of the HEIST LIFE crew, which includes Sauce, Jesus Heist aka Ty Da Dale and Babymane, the heavy influence hip-hop, art & NYC culture as well as The Five Percent Nation had on him growing up in the Bronx and why the trap / mumble rap scene isn’t for him. I hope you enjoyed our previous panel from A3C in ATL. Here is another exclusive from the Northern Power Summit, which is a one-day conference with a showcase component. Their primary objective is to provide education and tools, as well as access to individuals to help artists and industry professionals develop their careers internationally. This panel features Rich Kidd, Rookz, DJ Andre 905. Take a look at the description below if you want to learn more about them, they do also give a brief intro about themselves. I'm excited about this panel and the gems that were shared.Toronto is recognized as one of the biggest hotbeds of musical talent in the world, but that hasn't always been the case. This panel will dive into a discussion about tackling the challenges artists have faced due to the lack of infrastructure in the Canadian Urban Music industry. It will provide suggestions and solutions for how an artist can (and reasons they should) build their career locally to effectively take it worldwide. As mentioned in the podcast, Northern Power Summit is coming up on Saturday August 17 2019 in Toronto. Get your tickets at Eventbrite http://bit.ly/3281PjK and you can also visit the website at http://bit.ly/324IH6l More details will be coming about their programming.PanelistsDJ Andre has deejayed for OVO Afterparties at corporate events for Nike Canada to the official DJ for the Raptors 905 and many more.Rich Kidd is one of the most recognized and respected creatives in Canada's urban music industry today. He is a Juno award winner with Naturally Born Strangers and as a record producer he has crafted music for hip-hop superstars Drake, k-os, and Busta Rhymes and so many more. Rookz is the Founder & Director at Sandbox Studios, one of the most successful Recording Facilities in Toronto. With sessions with Cardi B, Tory Lanez, and most of the city's up and coming, Sandbox has become a staple in the scene and more importantly a hub for learning and connecting.Former music manager and now an award winning serial entrepreneur, Rookz is a public speaker, consultant and innovator, sitting on panels from Toronto to New York.Common- Let Love Tour Presented by MRG Concerts & Rap Season Wed, 7 Aug 2019, 7:00 PM at Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto. P. Watts & Large Professor - Southern Vangard Radio Interview SessionsBANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the #PWatts & #LargeProfessor interview session! This is one for the ages Vangardians. If the surprise that Watts, #BreakbeatLou, #Opio and #ClassicMaterial cooked up with #ExtraP for our #WeAreTheGard showcase at #A3C18 wasn't enough - how about an IN-STUDIO interview a mere few weeks later with Watts & LP?!?! These two gentlemen dropped by the lab along with the homie #Ghost to build about the new and old. We get the story on how their #A3C appearance came to be, why it almost never happened and the new single #RawWattage dropped last week - “T.O.O.L.” that features rhymes and production from Large, and the flip side, “Don't Lose,” that features #SadatX and is produced by #DJOgee of #DITC. We also crack the history books open to hear about how Watts and #DJFX came together to form Raw Wattage, Watts' Queens / NY lineage and how his meeting #TragedyKhadafi eventually linked him with Large. Extra P breaks down the status of #MainSource reunion, why “each one, teach one” has always been his approach with music and what it's like to still perform records from 25+ years ago all over the world. On top of that, friends of Southern Vangard #DJPocket & #J57 were just hanging out as well! Look - there is SO MUCH more inside it'll give you vertigo - so buckle up, tune in and soak up every single word of that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACKRecorded live October 25, 2018 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GAsouthernvangard.com@southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGardtwitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeksAPPLE PODCASTShttps://itun.es/us/QyyX9.cSOUNDCLOUDhttps://soundcloud.com/…/p-watts-large-professor-southern-…/MIXCLOUDhttps://www.mixcloud.com/…/p-watts-large-professor-souther…/YOUTUBEhttps://youtu.be/bKveUOKK6gA/

This week we go in a different direction for the Str8OutDaDen Podcast, as we give the underground emcees a break to talk to the man behind the scenes. Lazies meet Kato. The SMKA/Funk Volume producer sat down with us for a dope convo about his journey from Virginia to Atlanta. We also went into great detail about the gifts and curses of the music industry, along with being Asian in hip-hop. While giving us the origin of his name, Kato also spoke on his relationship with XXL Freshman Jarren Benton (remember that time when he jumped into the crowd during A3C?) and signing to Funk Volume. Very dope conversation indeed. We even did #VinylConversations sans a freestyle, but who knows maybe we will get a chance to hear what he creates from the vinyl we gave him. So you know the drill...sit back...Relax and Listen!
