And happily, Tom's guest today is a wonderful doctor on the line ready to answer your questions about all things orthopedic.Dr. Miho Tanakais an orthopedic surgeon, the Director of the Women's Sports Medicine Program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and an Associate Professor at the Harvard Medical School. Today, we welcome back to Midday a wonderful friend of the show, Dr. Miho Tanaka. She's an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine expert who will answer your questions about training and exercise. We call our segments with Dr. Tanaka, What Hurts Today? If you've got something that hurts, feel free to give us a call… But first, the Baltimore Running Festival is back. On Saturday (October 9), runners will hit the streets in four different events: the 26-mile full marathon, a half marathon, a 10K race (that's about 6 miles) and a 5K race (that's about 3 miles). It's the 20th anniversary of this popular event, which like so many events, took a COVID-related hiatus last year. Tom's first guest today is Lee Corrigan, the Festival's executive race director and president of Corrigan Sports Enterprises, the Elkridge-based company that organizes this and many other footraces across the region. After Mr. Corrigan's marathon preview, it's time for a Midday segment that, like the Baltimore Running Festival, has been absent during the pandemic. It's a segment we call, with our tongues firmly ensconced in our cheeks, What Hurts Today? We pose this question because, let's face it. Something hurts. Your knee. Your shoulder. Your elbow. Your ankle. I ask with all due respect, with genuine concern, and with a shared sense of what it means to have things that hurt. I have things that hurt, and so do you. And what's more fun than comparing what hurts? Dr. Miho Tanakaspecializes in what hurts. She is an acclaimed orthopedic surgeon and the director of the Women's Sports Medicine Program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She is a member of the faculty at the Harvard Medical School.  Dr. Tanaka has treated professional athletes and weekend-warriors alike. Whether or not you are running in one of the races in the Baltimore Running Festival this weekend, or your idea of a good time is hopping on your bike and riding, or leashing up your dog and walking, or playing soccer or tennis or golf or lifting weights; whatever you like to do to keep active and fit, Dr. Tanaka is here to answer questions you may have about how to stay active and injury-free, and to suggest some things to think about if you have an injury you need to address. The Institute recently signed a contract to be a telemedicine partner with Ware County Schools. The partnership is the first of its kind in the state — Northside Hospital Duluth will be the first to offer school-based concussion services via telemedicine, and it is set up for success, as the Ware County School System has been a recognized telemedicine provider for the past fifteen years.“Telemedicine, in general, is not something brand new, but the concussion aspect of it is something that’s brand new. We can’t find anyone else that’s doing similar school-based concussion care via telemedicine in this state, and we’re not certain if anyone around the country is doing school-based concussion care via telemedicine, either,” said Kristin Crea, Director of the Sports Medicine Program and Concussion Institute at Northside Hospital Duluth.Through the new partnership, Northside Hospital Duluth health professionals will provide much-needed sports medicine and concussion injury services for up to 6,000 high school athletes in Ware County Schools. To satisfy state requirements, Northside will also work with educators to offer “Return to Play” and “Return to Learn” protocol so athletes can resume their usual academic and extracurricular routines without exacerbating conditions.SOURCE: www.GwinnettCitizen.com#Podcast, Gwinnett County Podcast, Gwinnett News

Early on Saturday morning, June 2, several thousand runners are expected to turn out for the start of the Baltimore Ten-Miler. It’ll be the tenth running of this challenging and scenic marathon -- which starts and finishes near Druid Hill Lake Park -- and, as happens when a lot of folks hit the pavement in varying states of marathon-fitness, there will be a quite a few twisted ankles, sore knees and strained backs...not just during the hour-long race but for days or weeks afterward. Fortunately, Dr. Miho Tanaka joins Tom in the studio to talk about how you can avoid serious injuries on marathon day and how you can relieve some of the inevitable aches that follow a big run. Not into marathons? Dr. Tanaka also discusses the importance of an active lifestyle -- involving all kinds of exercise -- to living a longer, healthier life. Dr. Tanaka is an orthopedic surgeon and the Director of the Women’s Sports Medicine Program at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Before moving to Baltimore, she was the team physician for the St. Louis Cardinals and the St Louis Surge in the WNBA. She’s also served as assistant team physician for the Baltimore Orioles and another professional women’s basketball team, the NY Liberty. Dr. Tanaka also takes your questions about fitness, training and how to avoid and treat sports injuries.
