Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech Training and Pico TechnologyWatch Full Video EpisodeIn this episode of Diagnosing the Aftermarket A to Z, Matt Fanslow uses a famous Michael Jordan quote, a heartbreaking Minnesota Vikings loss, and a rant from Jeff Compton of The Jaded Mechanic Podcast to dig into a big question:When did we get so impatient with young people—and what is it costing our industry?Matt reflects on how we treat new, entry-level mechanical and technical specialists in our shops, how “common sense” isn't actually common, and why our own backgrounds make it easy to forget what it's like to start from zero. He draws parallels between sports, restaurants, and auto repair, and makes the case that if we want to “grow our own,” we must build patience and structure into our businesses.Along the way, he talks about failure as a prerequisite for greatness—using Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Muhammad Ali, and even win–loss records and batting averages to remind us that the “greats” failed a lot before anyone called them great.Highlights & Topics CoveredMichael Jordan's failure quote and what it really says about successA recent Vikings–Bears game:JJ McCarthy's rough day, clutch fourth-quarter drive, andHow special teams and defense actually lost the gameThe internet meltdown: instant calls to replace a young quarterback who's essentially still a rookieA short video rant from Jeff Compton (The Jaded Mechanic Podcast) about having patience with young peopleThe core question: When did we get so impatient—and were we always this way?Generational shifts in handling criticism, shame, and feedbackWhy “common sense” isn't common:How background, upbringing, and exposure shape what feels obviousGrowing up around farms, equipment, and shops vs. growing up with screensHomemakers, latchkey kids, and how changing family structures change what kids bring into the workplaceThe reality of today's entry-level hire:No mechanical backgroundDoesn't know a hex from a Torx… yetThe shop's responsibility if you want to “grow your own”:Structuring the business to shoulder an apprentice who isn't producing much at firstDefining basic expectations (showing up, being on time, not repeating the same mistake endlessly)Skill decay and repetition:Lab scopes, training classes, and how fast proficiency fades without regular useHow we criticize: sharp scalpel vs. rusty spoon; cutting people apart vs. building them upRemembering that apprentices didn't choose their childhood or start point—but are choosing this careerThe sports angle on failure and greatness:Michael Jordan getting cut from his high school teamPat Riley's quote about last shot vs. “save my life” shot (MJ vs. Larry Bird)Muhammad Ali's losses, UFC careers, and the obsession with “perfect records”Baseball batting averages: greatness at 30% successA teaser for a future episode: how this profession can play a role in the “war on young men”Key TakeawaysFailure is part of greatness. The people we call “the greatest” in sports failed repeatedly. Expecting perfection from a first-year tech is delusional.Common sense is built, not born. What feels obvious to you probably came from years of exposure, mistakes, and stories you grew up around. Your apprentice didn't get that same download. If you want to grow your own, structure for it. In this week's episode, I'm joined by creative entrepreneur, writer and past client, Tosin Hunter, for a deeply honest conversation about navigating the messy middle of career change, making an intentional pause, and rebuilding a life and career that genuinely aligns with your values.Tosin spent over a decade in corporate recruitment roles at organisations like EY, UBS and Salesforce — climbing the ladder, getting promoted (even while on maternity leave), and doing everything “right.” But behind the scenes, she was exhausted, burnt out, and increasingly disconnected from the work she was doing. In our coaching journey, she began unpacking what wasn't working, rediscovering her values, and reconnecting with parts of herself she'd buried for years. That inner work sparked a complete life shift. One that led her to leave corporate, honour her season of motherhood, rediscover her creativity, and eventually build Hunter Digital, the website design studio she now co-leads with her husband. If you're in the midst of questioning your career, craving more alignment, or feeling the nudge to pause and reassess, this conversation will resonate deeply.

This week, I sat down in person (yes, we went old school) with the brilliant Jakob Gowin, General Manager of the Meliá White House in London - and what a conversation this turned out to be.From washing dishes at 13 to running a 581 bedroom hotel and 112 long-stay apartments (with residents who've lived there for 30+ years!), Jakob's journey is packed with graft, heart, humility, and more than a few cracking stories - including the fact we recorded this episode in “The White House”. Sadly, neither of us bumped into the President… but we did fix some of the worlds problemsJakob brings a refreshing, human first take on hospitality and leadership, rooted in care, curiosity, resilience and a healthy dose of humour. This episode is full of golden nuggets for anyone in the industry, regardless of where you sit on the org chart. In this episode, Jakob and I get into…His spur of the moment entry into hospitality at age 13 (thanks to his brother bunking a shift)How a single 30 second conversation changed the entire course of his careerThe incredible history of the Meliá White House - from art deco elegance to WWII navigation point to Soviet spy HQBalancing hospitality at scale with genuine personalisation (including when “positive stalking” is actually a great thing)Why unsung hero actions matter just as much as the big “hero moments”The responsibility leaders have around their first responseWhy communication isn't a “soft skill” - it's the skillThe power of empathy, integrity and a well timed bit of humour in leadershipAI in hotels: not a gimmick, not a cost-cutting exercise - a chance to give humans more time to be… well… humanSome cracking quote-ables from Jakob“A bad manager is sometimes easier to learn from than a good one.”“If that doesn't bring a smile to your face as someone in hospitality… you're in the wrong trade.”“People will forgive an awful lot if they're communicated to properly.”“You can't deliver hospitality if you're not feeling right. It's hard to paint on a smile forever.”“Treat people how they want to be treated - not how you want to be treated.”Why this episode is worth your earsIf you work in hospitality, lead people, want to lead people, or just need a little reminder of what true hospitality looks like, this one's for you.Jakob is the kind of leader who proves that kindness and high performance are not only compatible - they fuel each other. From a one-stoplight town in upstate New York to the bright lights of NCAA Division I basketball, Coach Jacey Brooks has carved her name into the game with heart, hustle, and a vision for greatness. Her rise from a small-town standout to Head Coach of Northern Illinois University's Women's Basketball team is a story of resilience, belief, and relentless drive — the kind of journey that defines SportsLifeTalk's “You Got Next.”Born and raised in Machias, New York, Jacey learned early on what it meant to earn every bucket. Graduating with just 62 classmates, she was a big dreamer in a small town — and basketball was her passport to the world. At Buffalo State College, she became a force to be reckoned with, scoring over 1,200 career points and ranking 16th in rebounds, proving that where you come from doesn't define where you can go.But her real story began after a devastating ACL injury — one that could've ended her playing days. Instead, it opened the door to a new purpose: coaching. That's when she met Coach Jim Crowley, who took a chance on her and gave her a role at St. Bonaventure — a humble $5,000-a-year job that would spark an 18-year career of building, mentoring, and leading. Jacey traded in the jersey for the clipboard and never looked back.At SUNY Cortland, she led her teams to three NCAA Tournament appearances in just three seasons, proving she had the leadership, strategy, and culture to win. Then came another bold leap — stepping away from a head coaching role to serve as Associate Head Coach at Buffalo, where she helped lead the Bulls to a WNIT Championship, knocking off powerhouse programs like Rutgers and Cleveland State along the way. That success caught the eye of Northern Illinois University, and in a whirlwind of interviews and excitement, Jacey was named the 11th head coach in NIU history. “It's surreal,” she said. “I remember walking into the Convocation Center as an opponent. Now I get to make it our home court advantage.”Since that day, she's hit the ground running — building a culture rooted in discipline, energy, and love for the game. “You're going to see a team that plays extremely hard every single night,” she promises. “We're going to compete with passion, grit, and purpose.”With a mix of seasoned veterans, fresh faces, and relentless recruits, Coach Brooks has her sights set on restoring NIU's proud tradition of women's basketball dominance. Her leadership philosophy? Simple: “Winning is hard — but nothing worth having ever comes easy.”Off the court, Jacey is as real as they come — a mentor, motivator, and role model who believes in teaching life through basketball. Whether it's breaking down film, empowering her players to find their voice, or representing women in leadership, she's redefining what it means to be a coach in today's game.In this exclusive SportsLifeTalk: You Got Next episode, hosts B Jones and Head Coach KT sit down with Coach Brooks to unpack:How a $5,000 job became the foundation for a Division I coaching careerThe challenges and triumphs of rebuilding a program from the ground upHer recruiting philosophy and the culture she's bringing to NIUHer vision for women's basketball and what “grit” really looks like

This episode is sponsored by Lockton, click here to learn more This episode is available in Spanish - click hereWatch the full video on YouTube - click hereTony Trecapelli's career in automotive began at Saturn, where he saw firsthand what a people-centered culture could look like. Employees were trusted, collaboration was encouraged, and leaders treated the workforce as partners. That environment shaped his perspective early on. When he later moved into GM, the environment felt very different. Decisions came from the top, and people were expected to follow orders without question. Seeing both sides of the industry gave Tony a clear choice about the kind of leader he wanted to be. Instead of command and control, he committed to leading through coaching and support. Now, as President and CEO of Gemini Group, Tony applies those lessons every day. He talks about creating a workplace where people can try, make mistakes, and learn without fear of punishment. In his view, that's how resilience is built — not by avoiding risk, but by facing challenges and adapting together.Tony also reflects on Gemini's small-town Michigan roots. It's a place where people know each other, relationships matter, and the company works hard to keep that spirit alive even as it operates globally. He describes how those values influence daily decisions and help steady the organization in an unpredictable industry. The conversation turns to the realities of being a tier two supplier. Tony shares how tariffs, EV and hybrid transitions, and global competition create constant uncertainty. Instead of pretending to have all the answers, he focuses on being transparent and open with his team, making sure they understand the challenges and feel connected to the bigger mission.Tony also opens up on a more personal level. He talks about what fuels his drive as a leader, the routines that set the tone for his day, and the ways he steps back to recharge outside of work. The episode closes with a live audience Q&A, giving Tony the chance to respond directly to questions about Gemini's future, his leadership style, and the lessons that shaped him. What listeners get from this conversation is more than a story about one leader's journey; it's an honest look at leadership in automotive today. Tony's message is straightforward: leadership is about people first, and culture is what carries a company through change.Themes discussed in this episode:The leadership lessons Tony Trecapelli carried from Saturn's collaborative culture into his careerThe difference between servant leadership and command-and-control styles in automotive organizationsWhy Tony leads Gemini Group with a coaching mindset that encourages growth through mistakesThe daily realities and challenges tier two suppliers face in a volatile automotive supply chainThe impact of tariffs, EV transitions, and political uncertainty on business decisions for suppliersThe role of mentors, personal habits, and values in shaping Tony's leadership approachWhy transparency and clear communication are essential for building trust during times of changeFeatured guest: Tony Trecapelli What he does: Anthony A. Welcome back to The Root of the Matter. In today's episode, I'm joined by Dr. Toni Engram, a SMART-certified biologic dentist, integrative health coach, and founder of Flourish Dental Boutique in Texas. From the moment we connected, it felt like talking with a soul sister. Our journeys through personal illness, holistic healing, and biologic dentistry mirror each other in many ways, and this conversation is packed with insights for anyone curious about how the mouth and body are deeply intertwined.Dr. Engram shares her personal story of being diagnosed with Crohn's disease, and how that turning point inspired her to reimagine the way she practiced dentistry. Instead of following the conventional model, she began to explore oral-systemic health, functional medicine, and the root causes of inflammation. Her journey led her to create a fluoride-free, mercury-safe dental practice where patients are cared for with a focus on prevention, healing, and whole-body wellness.Together, we explore the connections between oral health, the gut microbiome, and the nervous system. We talk about why airway health, tongue ties, and sleep apnea matter more than most people realize, and how breathing patterns can influence everything from digestion to a child's development. Dr. Engram also opens up about the challenges of transitioning a conventional dental practice to a biologic model, and why authenticity is so important when guiding patients through this work. What We Dive Into in This EpisodeDr. Engram's healing journey with Crohn's disease and how it shaped her careerThe overlap between gut dysbiosis, oral inflammation, and systemic healthSleep apnea, airway health, and the role of the nervous system in preventionWhy fluoride-free and mercury-safe dentistry supports long-term healthSalivary testing, microbiome diversity, and why pH balance matters more than fluorideHow materials like composites, zirconia, and biocompatible ceramics impact the bodyThe power of ozone, PRF, and functional tools for saving teeth and preventing root canalsCreating a dental practice that is truly authentic and patient-centeredThis conversation is full of practical pearls and heart-centered wisdom. In this episode, Lisa and Melissa discuss:The misconceptions and realities of pursuing a music careerThe value and limitations of majoring in music at collegeHow parents can support teens responsibly pursuing creative pathsBuilding sustainable and financially secure careers in the artsKey Takeaways: Majoring in music is often unnecessary, and sometimes unhelpful, for students pursuing contemporary music careers, who instead benefit more from learning entrepreneurial skills like music production, video editing, and social media marketing. Many successful musicians build income through diverse streams like collaboration, licensing, freelance production, and music business work, not just from their music.Early hands-on experience in music production, collaboration, and entrepreneurship helps students determine whether a professional music career is right for them before committing to a college major or expensive program.A helpful question to guide college decisions is: "What are you hiring a college to do for you?" Focusing on outcomes like networking or skill-building rather than simply pursuing prestige.“You do not need a piece of paper, or an institution, or anyone's permission to become great at your craft. Become an entrepreneur and launch yourself.” – Melissa MulliganAbout Melissa Mulligan: Melissa Mulligan is a renowned vocal and music career coach who has guided platinum-selling, award-winning, and touring artists, including Jack from AJR, Chelsea Cutler, Jeremy Zucker, and Aria Lisslo, the 2024 John Lennon Songwriter Award winner.
