In this episode, Niall dives into the contentious debate: Should We Lower The Age Of Voting? A Fine Gael Senator recently stirred the pot, suggesting that 16-year-olds should have the right to vote, arguing that politically-minded youth feel ignored by the establishment. But is 16 too young? Are they mature enough to influence their own future through voting? The discussion heats up as callers share contrasting views. Some callers passionately support lowering the voting age to 16. They argue that many young people at that age are politically aware and engaged, citing issues like climate change and education as areas where their voices should be heard. They believe granting voting rights empowers them as active participants in democracy, fostering civic engagement from a young age.Others vehemently oppose the idea. They express concerns about the maturity and informed decision-making capabilities of teenagers, suggesting that voting rights should remain with more mature individuals. While acknowledging that some 16-year-olds may be politically aware, they argue that many are not yet equipped to make informed decisions about complex issues with far-reaching implications. As the discussion unfolds, Niall navigates through these divergent perspectives, highlighting the complexities and implications of lowering the voting age. In the wrap-up, he reflects on the key points raised by callers and provides insights into the ongoing debate surrounding youth participation in democracy.

When we think about some of the most profound political debates of our time , what would it mean to include the vote of those that are most likely to be impacted?
In January 2024, the recently appointed National/Act/NZ First government declared it would halt proceedings, started under Labour, to lower the voting age from 18 to 16. This declaration was made the same week as the release of the Independent Electoral Review, which included a recommendation to lower the voting age, and came only months after the Supreme Court ruled that the current voting age of 18 breached the Bill of Rights Act in terms of age discrimination. So what now? On this show, guests Daborah Hart (Independent Electoral Review Chair), Sage Garrett (youth advocacy group Make it 16), Bronwyn Wood (Te Herenga Waka) and Darcy Lawrey (interested young person) share their views on why the voting age should change, and how the government's announcement may impact this goal.
The Isle of Man Electoral Commission recently published its report which makes recommendations to Tynwald in relation to House of Keys constituency boundaries. The report is due to be debated in March and on Agenda Commission members Sally Bolton and Nigel Davis explain the Commission's findings and recommendations. Should MHKs make decisions about the future shape and size of their constituencies? Should they follow international standards? With just under half the voting age population not bothering to vote should we be looking at much bolder steps in relation to Keys elections?
The government has scrapped a bill to lower the voting age in local body elections to 16. The bill was introduced last year after the Supreme Court ruled that the current voting age of 18 is discriminatory and breaches the human rights of young people. Jim Palmer who chaired the recommendation for lowering the voting age told Heather Du-Plessis Allan that the he is not disappointed by the outcome. The family eventually settled lawsuits for $6 billion dollars, but now the Supreme Court has stepped in and said not so fast. A GOP presidential hopeful wants to raise the voting age to 25. Are you young and can't afford your rent? You're not alone. And a friend sent me an email about Kansas and abortion I just have to share with you. Tune in!

A campaign launched this week by youth-led organisation Make It 16 is calling on the federal government to lower the legal voting age to 16. Supporters of the push say that if 16- and 17-year-olds can drive, pay taxes and join the army, then they should also have the right to vote. Both major parties are saying it is not a priority. In today's deep dive, we'll give you the background info you need to help you understand both sides of the argument. We're running a poll on whether the voting age should be lowered in Australia. An independent panel of legal experts is recommending lowering the voting age to 16. The government scrapped plans in March to introduce legislation to the house which would lower the voting age, after a Supreme Court ruling in November last year. The Supreme Court said the voting age of 18 was discriminatory, inconsistent with the Bill of Rights. University of Otago law professor Andrew Geddis is part of the independent panel. He spoke with Corin Dann.
Lowering the voting age to 16, a 3.5 per cent party vote threshold and a public referendum on a four year Parliamentary term. These are just some of the draft recommendations to come out of a sweeping review into the country's electoral system. A panel of experts was commissioned to investigate whether electoral laws are fit for purpose by the former Justice Minister Kris Faafoi last year. Our political reporter Anneke Smith spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
