Lots of cool things this week with a focus on Ian Power's new release, "Ave Maria: Variations on a Theme by Giacinto Scelsi" which I felt could not be done justice by only playing a portion of it.  It's a fascinating look at how the briefest of melodies can be interpreted and re-interpreted in order to take on the melody from different perspectives.   In addition, we'll check out new releases from William Susman, Homebrewed Universe, The Owl, Joseph Bohgian and the Thin Edge New Music New Music Collective w/ Linda Caitlin Smith together w/ some older goodies. This podcast focuses on the important topic of mental health and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on rural life. Contributors to the podcast shared their own personal experiences and knowledge in this area, these included: Jonathan Dwyer from Devilsbit Macra na Feirme in Tipperary, Founder of Make the Moove mental health workshops; Ian Power, CEO of SpunOut.ie; and Carmel Dawson, Public Relations Officer of the Irish Countrywomen's Association (ICA). Ian Power discusses the impact of Covid-19 that has resulted in restrictions for young people, in particular a lack of social contact. Research carried out by SpunOut.ie shows that young people in rural Ireland are twice as likely to say that they feel isolated at this time when compared to those in urban areas. He also discusses the work of SpunOut.ie to support the mental health of young people during the pandemic, and his hopes for the future. Jonathan Dwyer was alarmed by the high suicide rate in North Tipperary and Laois, and how this was affecting his own community. As a result, he started the Make the Moove mental health workshops, which looks into the mental health pressures for young people in rural Ireland and the lessons they have learned from examining similar international examples. Carmel Dawson discusses how the pandemic has disrupted people's lives and the problems it has caused in the form of a lack of services and isolation in her hometown of Tullow in Co. Carlow. She also discusses how the ICA and its Federations have adapted to the restrictions.

On today’s episode I speak with Ian Power, who is the CEO of Spunout.ie - Ireland’s youth information website, inclusive of a free 24/7 text service called “Text 50808”, which provides support for people going through mental health or emotional crisis - big or small. Ian and I had an incredibly rich conversation on the very important topic of 'Creating Space for Connection' and practical ways in which we can use emotional intelligence to foster more inclusive spaces. Specifically, we discuss the role of empathy and self-awareness and how these two emotional skills enable us to deepen the connection with ourselves and others. This episode is part of a larger series of conversations discussion Mental health and Wellbeing. Creating space for connection is a central part of proactively managing our wellbeing, as connection is rooted in our need for love and belonging. Science has shown that connection to aids our mental health in many different ways: reducing our levels of anxiety and depression, regulating our emotions, and improving our self-esteem (to name a few). But beyond mental health, another reason why I felt this episode was contextually relevant is because if you look at many of the global news headlines - whether that be on racial injustice, growing inequality, or grossly skewed political views, they all emphasize fragmentation and disconnection within our communities. This conversation addresses practical ways we might better come to understand one another, so that we may evolve as a human collective.

El Guapo Records | Ian Power Music ep 14 - Kiepersol Texas Podcast El Guapo Records located in the same building as Alex & Afton Vintedge in Tyler, Texas has some of the best vinyl, 8-track and cassettes in East Texas! Ian Power has been running the shop since November 2018, loves listening to music, however, he is a local East Texas Musician. Ian talks about the resurgence in the vinyl industry and how this medium of listening to music has become quite popular again, especially in the younger generations. Some Indie bands have released new music straight to cassette or vinyl because there is nothing like the sound you get going to those vintage mediums of music. With digital downloads, CDs are almost unthought of any more. Which has created a nostalgia and appreciate for Vinyl once again. There is something special about getting newly pressed or old vinyl records because they often come with pictographs or booklets that tell more of the story the musicians intended. Ian Power likes most music, however, he is a big fan of 60's and 70's psych rock, which you can see a lot of in his collection at the shop. Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Dr. John & the Nite Trippers, The Grateful Dead and some other weirder, but awesome bands as you go more into it! El Guapo has a lot of classics as well such as Ozzy Osbourne, Prince, David Bowie and just about every genre of music, including movie soundtracks on vinyl. El Guapo Records sells turntables, amps, vintage systems that will allow you to listen to these records or even your collection that might need a little dust wiped off! Not to mention local artist's CDs, El Guapo Records swag and other great merch as well! Whether you like vintage clothing or old vinyl, this is a one-stop opportunity! You can visit El Guapo Records 5304 Old Bullard Rd, Tyler, Texas You can find El Guapo Records on Facebook or @elguaporecordsco on Instagram. Ian is in the process of getting an online shop set up, so that you can add to your collection. In the meantime, you can come to visit the shop, if you want to see what he has available. Local musician and entertainer Douglas Jay Boyd joins us - Kiepersol Texas Podcast ep 9 . Hosted by Michael Roth . Douglas is a local East Texan who is well connected in the community and invests in artist collaborations. . Michael and Douglas met in early 2018 because of Café 1948 owners Sam and Amber Richmann were hosting a true Texas BBQ. Café 1948 is a local mobile coffee shop that is heavily invested and supportive of the local community. . Douglas is a native Texan, who moved down to Austin in 2005 thinking he could get his musical chops in that area. Once he got down there he was intimidated at first by the level of talent most of the musicians had in that area. It took a friend moving down there and pushing Douglas to become better at his craft before Douglas started to play shows regularly. Douglas ended up touring and playing professionally all around North America, around 300+ shows a year. . Eventually, Douglas moved to Tyler, Tx in 2015 because he wanted to be a father to his son. Between his fatherly duties and his lack of confidence in his ability to be a full-time musician, Douglas took a break from music. After spending some time outside of the music scene, he quickly realized that he needed music in his life on a regular basis. So he started sound engineering for some local venues and booking bands or playing smaller gigs as well. During this time, Douglas realized that there is so much potential in the East Texas music scene. Tyler, Tx is perfectly located, far enough away from most major Texas markets and far enough from Shreveport or New Orleans, that we are the perfect stop for touring bands as they make their way east or west. There is a lot of the musical talent here locally in East Texas as well. . There is a lot of opportunities around Tyler specifically, where you can experience cover bands or country music. Places like Stanley's Famous Pit Bar-B-Q provides opportunities to experience different genres and cultures within the music scenes. They are also working on expanding their restaurant and venue area seating, which will only bring in more opportunities for more bands to come out. . Stanley's Famous Pit Bar-B-Q caters to Americana, blues and rock'n'roll style music. . Texas Music City Grill & Smokehouse - Authentic Site has a really nice venue and has become very successful and will only continue to grow. They cater a lot to the red dirt country scene. . True Vine Brewing Company has a really awesome and different venue that caters to a lot of East Texas music and other concerts within the rock genre. . The Grove - Tyler has a really neat venue, that caters to a lot of the local musicians, but has great acts from out of town as well. . Rick's On The Square is a fun restaurant where they typically have tribute bands or cover bands or party bands. . ETX Brewing Co. is always open to having great music, with a nice mix of different genres. . The Garage Bar caters to more rock bands and music lovers . Moore's Store in Ben Wheeler, Tx caters to red dirt country, blues, rock . Cowboy's Tyler caters to red dirt and country . Red Rooster Icehouse in Hawkins, Tx which has a lot of country red dirt . Coyote Sam's Bar & Grille is where Douglas, Ian Power and Marc Beevers play on Tuesday nights. . We at Kiepersol are starting to have music, so stay tuned as we start to book more variety and shows. . . Douglas' Tips for Musicians/Bands - 1) Forget the money, 2) Don't forget the love of music. It should be about your passion of music, not money or fame. 3) Reach out for help or collaborations. No man is an island, so you will need help at some point. 4) Help other bands, musicians or local talent. You can both be in competition with other local bands AND advocate for the local community at the same time. The more people that come to Tyler, Tx and East Texas, the more opportunities other bands and musicians will have to play. . visit us at www.kiepersol.com

Researchers have found a way to produce a naturally occurring mineral, magnesite, in a lab, that can absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, offering a potential strategy for tackling climate change. They've accelerated a process that normally takes thousands of years to a matter of days, using panels made from tiny balls of polystyrene. Gareth Mitchell meets Ian Power of Trent University in Ontario who led the research. Could this be a viable technology for tackling global warming and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? What if something as natural as beetroot - or specifically defined doses of beetroot juice - could help alleviate cardiovascular disease and improve the pumping function of failing hearts? That's the idea behind a major trial underway at the Barts Heart Hospital and Queen Mary University in London. Amrita Ahluwalia, co-Director of the William Harvey Research Institute and Christopher Primus a specialist in heart failure, are interrogating the natural nitrates in foods like beetroot and how they could be beneficial to our cardiovascular system. Cells in our bodies can go wrong and end up proliferating into cancers. Intuition might say the bigger something is, the more cells it has and thus, greater is its risk of developing cancer. But elephants have somehow re-awakened a gene that kills cells that could be cancerous before they have time to cause any damage. Vincent Lynch of the University of Chicago has been looking at the genetics that keeps these giants virtually, immune which could hold clues for tackling cancers in humans. And we hear from Simon Winchester, the next in our series of interviews with the shortlisted authors for this year's Royal Society Insight Investment Science Book Prize. Exactly, is an intriguing history of precision, the search for ever greater engineering accuracy and how it changed the world. Presenter: Gareth Mitchell Producer: Adrian Washbourne.

Technology is constantly changing and for many, keeping up with all of the latest gadgets and how to use them, can be a challenge. For seniors, it's an especially difficult age to ‘keep up' in. That's why some Kelowna post-secondary students have taken the initiative to help bridge the technology age-gap. Throughout the month of March, three Okanagan College (OC) students: twins Daniel and Rebecca Alfred and Sam Jamieson connected 28 Missionwood Retirement Resort residents with 15 student volunteers for hands-on tablet tutorials.
