‘Deee-lited' to be joined by one of my new favourite acts on the Synthetic Dreams podcast today, Nauti Siren, which features multi-talented musician, Jessie Evans and DJ Dmitry, co-founder of the seminal New York dance group Deee-lite. Nauti Siren's music is a truly intoxicating mix of disco, reggae, new jazz and electro dub. Their excellent new single ‘Mermaid Of The Year' is out now, with their debut album to follow. Jessie has worked with some amazing musicians, including the late and very great, Steve Mackay, who provided saxophone on the first two Stooges albums and drummer, Budgie from legendary post-punk band, Siouxsie and The Banshees. As well as discussing Nauti Siren, Dmitry also talks in-depth about the recording of ‘Groove Is In The Heart' and his time in Deee-lite This much-loved group enjoyed international success with their single, ‘Groove Is In The Heart', which Rolling Stone Magazine recently called one of 10 best dance tracks of all time. It's a truly iconic track, which still gets played on the radio and in clubs across the world. Deee-lite had six number-ones in the U.S. Dance music charts during the five years they were together before disbanding in 1994. Since then, Dmitry has gone to collaborate and work with a diverse range of artists including Chaka Khan, Julee Cruise, Sinead O'Connor and Ziggy Marley. Jessie and Dmitry describe Nauti Siren as a mythological creature, calling from the portal where the elements of water (emotions) meet air (higher knowledge). Steve Mackay is back to talk about Aerodynamics. He covers the theory and its surprising history in cycling and triathlon. With such highly individual and unusual outcomes, Steve concludes that the only way to know what is aerodynamic for the individual is to test it. Which is exactly what we will be doing for the next episide of Chasing Kona.

Paris Marx is a technology writer. They've written for TIME magazine, WIRED, CBC News, Jacobin, and OneZero. They speak internationally on the future of transportation. They also host the award-winning podcast 'Tech Won't Save Us,' which offers a much-needed critical perspective on the history and future implications of Big Tech. Their book, Road to Nowhere: What Silicon Valley Gets Wrong about the Future of Transportation, was published by Verso Books in 2022. Our conversation mainly focuses on Road to Nowhere, why they wrote it in such an accessible way, the politics of communication in the context of a climate emergency, and what it says that we're largely programmed to assume that technology—even technology that is produced for a profit by private multinational corporations—will save us. Paris' book has a lot of answers, but doesn't answer all the questions. I kinda push them to speak to some of the most problematic issues around public engagement and political mobilization. One of the really useful things about their approach is that it's rooted in a sense that history is helpful if we look critically at the things we've been told are true about our car-centric infrastructure, and compare it with what a rigorous look at that history reveals. The history they offer is startling, in the sense that it shows a number of branching paths where our infrastructure could have looked very different if it wasn't for powerful sites of capitalist production impinging on policy making in profound ways. There have been moments where massive amounts of public money was spent making a world that doesn't work. We need to move in a radically different direction. There are nearly 1.5 billion vehicles on the planet. According to Marx, replacing them with more vehicles, this time around powered by batteries, is not a viable strategy. I ask them if we need to leverage the desire for disruptive change. What Paris says is really appealing to me: that “people are much more open to change than we give them credit for;” we are “incentivized to want to keep things as they are,” despite the dire ecological consequences, because the economic consequences of change are made so punitive. For this reason, “in the face of the climate crisis,” Paris points out that we have to push ourselves to understand the intertwined nature of “many seemingly separate struggles, over mobility, housing, health, community, and many others.” So, while the rate of vehicle collisions or pedestrian deaths might feel ordinary now, that doesn't mean it has to be met with passive acceptance. What if we let it radicalize us again? Here in Halifax, we saw that process happen. A local activist named Steve MacKay organized a protest against political inaction and it was successful in getting traffic calming put on Robie Street. The data shows that vehicular deaths disproportionately occur in poor neighborhoods, and not enough is being done. If part of the problem is just acceptance, the answer might be refusal. Refusing to accept this absurd reality where, as Marx says in their book, “an estimated 1.3 million people are killed [globally] every year in road traffic crashes… more than 3,500 people every single day.” What would it mean to refuse that reality?
The third and final part of the series that firstly took us through "Back in the Day" as a personal retrospective, then onto "It's Not About The Bike" as a deep look into perhaps the discipline that can evoke the most passion in us as triathletes. The Future of Triathlon explores where we feel the sport is headed. From PTO, to the Ironman WC Kona / Nice split, to the impacts it will have on high performance and indeed participation itself. We discuss what lies ahead. The future is here and it's exciting. (please excuse a small audio issue at the start only)
In the Coast's inaugural episode host and Coast reporter, Matt Stickand is joined by guests Ben MacLeod and Steve MacKay to talk about everything that council passed, cops being bad at their jobs, and Spring Garden sucking for anyone but drivers
Steve MacKay spends his time at his day job analyzing data for the Health Authority. And that skill came into play after more than 20 accidents along the residential stretch of Robie Street where he lives. He had noticed some vehicles travelling up to 90km/hr past his home located between Stairs and Columbus Streets. That's just north of where Robie branches off from where Massachusetts Avenue begins. He admits he did go through the formal process of writing emails and lodging complaints with his councillor, Lindell Smith. He and his neighbours also put out green bins to try and slow vehicles down. And after launching a petition and repeatedly posting from his Raccoon at Home Twitter account, traffic calming measures are finally coming. HRM will be installing four-way-stops and crosswalk markings in two intersections along that stretch of Robie this summer. And MacKay is sharing his lessons he's learned along the way.
In episode 14 of Accolades Video Series I talk to Blaise Garza (Violent Femmes) about Steve Mackay, a tenor saxophonist from Daly City, California, United States. After sitting in with the Stooges on several occasions, he formally joined the group two days before they left Detroit for Los Angeles to record Fun House in May 1970. In 2003, Mackay rejoined the Stooges when they played their first show in twenty-nine years, and he remained with the group until he died in 2015.
Steve checks in again to discuss bikes. We talk history of bikes, best equipment choices, how to improve and we both give our thoughts on what it is we both love about cycling.

Steve Mackay is both a veteran and student of the sport. He loves nothing more that a chat about the "old days" of triathlon where bikes were simple and training methods were even simpler. It was great to sit down and chat about his history in the sport and the people that were a part of that along the way.
John Oates & The Good Road Band ‘Live In Nashville’ Set For September 18th Release Four new originals along with covers of Mississippi John Hurt, Jimmy Rogers, Don Gibson highlight second Thirty Tigers album LOS ANGELES, July 31, 2020—Rock & Roll Hall of Famer John Oates has had a home in Nashville for more than a decade, performing with some of the city’s most sought-after musicians. John’s Thirty Tigers debut, Arkansas, performed with The Good Road Band, was released in 2018, proving a critical and commercial success in the Americana and roots community, a combination of originals with classic songs popularized by Mississippi John Hurt, Jimmy Rodgers and Don Gibson. After two-plus solid years of honing their chops through touring, that group – mandolin stalwart Sam Bush, pedal steel maestro Russ Pahl (Dan Auerbach), electric guitar whiz Guthrie Trapp, expert bassist Steve Mackay, cello prodigy Nate Smith (Kacey Musgraves) and drummer/percussionist extraordinaire Josh “Daddy” Day – returns intact for Live In Nashville, set for release on September 18 on all major digital streaming platforms. The set was recorded last January 9 at Station Inn, the legendary intimate listening room in The Gulch section of Nashville where the band first took shape. “This album represents a full-circle moment for me,” said John, in quarantine with his family in his adopted Music City home. “It feels like the culmination of the Arkansas project, being able to bring these guys back, and to be able to make this record after touring and playing so many shows together.” Inspired by Mississippi John Hurt, Live in Nashville features songs like the gospel-blues opener, “Lord Send Me,” the Delta blues of the standard “Stack o Lee” and an electrified take on “Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor,” dubbed “Pallet Soft and Low,” where John manages to show off some of his well-honed rock guitar skills. In yet another “full circle moment,” John pays tribute to his own childhood with a cover of Don Gibson’s “Oh Lonesome Me,” the first song he learned to sing and play on guitar as a six-year-old after hearing it on the radio. Several of the songs come with Oates’ own stories about the songs, connecting the dots as to their connections, including popular hits of the era like the Mississippi Sheiks’ 1930 success, “Sittin’ on Top of the World,” Emmett Miller’s 1924 breakthrough, “Anytime” and Jimmy Rogers’ 1932 classic, “Miss the Mississippi and You.” Watch "Anytime" HERE “I was always fascin

Before the Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash or The Damned there was The Stooges. They were punk before punk but they were also, Garage Rock, Psychedelia, Hard Rock, Blues and Acid Jazz. They created a genre all their own and couldn’t be defined by any one adjective. Iggy Pop, Dave Alexander, Steve Mackay and the Asheton brothers (and later James Williamson) were possibly the greatest Rock ’N Roll band of all time and Fun House is their crowning achievement.
