With Senator Jason Esteves' announcement that he's officially in the 2026 race to be Georgia's next governor comes open speculation; where are the other Democrats for the field? The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's chief political reporter, Greg Bluestein, is notably fixated on whether Stacey Abrams wants in. ------Senator Jon Ossoff, with the 2026 cycle on his radar for obvious reasons, scheduled a town hall for constituents in Marietta Friday. While he opened the gathering wanting to bring attention to the need for Medicaid expansion and the dire consequences of Georgia's six-week abortion ban, those in attendance had other concerns to address. More on that in a follow-up podcast HERE.------"Protest music" hasn't gone away; it's just adapted and evolved. Remember us all discussing and debating the meaning and message behind Kendrick Lamar's halftime performance? Yeah, hip-hop has long been the vehicle for many kinds of "protest" messages, and it was earlier this week my dear sister-in-law sent me this gem from D.C.-based viral band Sub-Radio. In it, they roast Elon Musk relentlessly. Then there's my friend Randy Cahall, who was in Atlanta recently to record a session for me. His is more the old-school "folk singer with a guitar" type, but its amazing how even decades-old songs carry messaging that still resonates today.

ABOUT SUB-RADIO:Few independent bands have had a career as varied and unpredictable as the indie pop quintet Sub-Radio. Founded in Washington DC by a group of childhood friends, the band built a following in their hometown of Washington, D.C. on the strength of ecstatic live shows and a stream of releases. The band's first release, 2016's Same Train // Different Station, was recorded as the guys finished college, blending the pop-punk they grew up on with the indie-pop stylings of WALK THE MOON and The 1975. In 2017, Sub-Radio released a single per month from April to September, coinciding with a regional tour and an appearance at the Firefly Music Festival. Their two raucous sets at the festival exposed them to a wider audience, and the band's next EP Headfirst was their best-performing release yet, including the popular beachy single “Flashback,” which has amassed more than 3 million streams across all platforms. Following the release of their 2020 EP Thoughts Lights Colors Sounds, produced by Andrew Maury (Shawn Mendes, Lizzo, COIN), the band embarked on a pandemic-induced “virtual tour,” live-streaming their energetic performances to more than 20 million viewers and building a worldwide community of fans. The band signed with indie label Th3rd Brain in early 2022, announcing a string of US tour dates in support of forthcoming new music.CONNECT WITH SUB-RADIO:Spotify - TikTok - Instagram - Twitter - YouTube - Facebook - Patreon - DiscordSUPPORT THIS SHOWSUBSCRIBE TO YOUR LIFE THE MIXTAPE MAGAZINESUBSCRIBE TO DEAR DEAN MAGAZINE

The other day I sat down with four of the six members of the DC-based pop-rock group Sub-radio. As the composers of this podcast's theme music I felt it was only right for them to be my first guests. We discussed everything from social media assignments to time-traveling."We can all play instruments so we should be in a band that releases music. And those aren't the minimum standards. You should have something to say... You should make music because you want to do something with it." Key HighlightsLet's begin the interview! [03:10]How they assign roles [05:06]How they handle the business side of things [07:48]What do they wish they knew back then? [13:11]The importance of living in the moment [18:00]How to handle being the newbie band [19:24]Singles vs. EPs [25:48]What would they do with 1 extra hour in your day? [28:18]What's their big ask? [30:38]What band would each of them wish to join for the day? [34:00]Where to find them & how to connect! [34:49]Take a listen to their latest single, What Are We, and be sure to follow them on Soundcloud & Spotify!
