With over 40 years-experience as a luxury hotel concierge, Robert Watson shares his career path and choices along with some unforgettable experiences with our listeners. Starting as a page boy at the InterContinental Hotel in London, Robert has also worked at some of London's famous hotels such as Mayfair Hotel, the Park Hyatt Carlton Tower and the Grosvenor. In this podcast, Robert describes what a concierge does, why this position is still important for prestigious hotels and for their role in satisfying demanding client requests. Robert explains the importance of having a strong network that can be relied upon when a request is particularly challenging. Robert also gives our listeners an inside look into the International Clefs D'Or, (translated as The Golden Keys), a professional association of hotel concierges, with approximately 4000 members working in over 80 countries and 530 destinations, in literally every corner of the world. In 2009, Robert became the President of this prestigious organization and he has served this organization in other positions such as the Treasurer and Delegate for Great Britain. With roots dating back to 1929, Les Clefs d'Or was officially founded in France in 1952 as a not-for-profit organisation based on two pillars: Service and Friendship. Before earning the right to wear the golden keys, those who aspire to become a member must have several years of experience as a hotel concierge, pass comprehensive testing and prove, beyond doubt, their ability to deliver highest quality of service. Joining the Willard InterContinental Washington in February of 2006, Chef Concierge Robert Watson brings to the DC landmark hotel over 48 years of Concierge service experience accrued from working in properties all over the world. Prior to this, Robert has held Chef Concierge positions at the Grosvenor House Hotel, the Park Hyatt Carlton Tower, and the MayFair InterContinental Hotel in London England. He has also held this prestigious position at the Hotel InterContinental in Luxembourg, the Cape Sun InterContinental Hotel in Cape Town, the InterContinental Sandton Sun Hotel in Johannesburg both in South Africa where he aided in the hotel's opening. His duties during this time included creating hotel policy and procedure as well as the development of their training manual for all concierges, porters, doormen and drivers. In 2009, Robert became International President of Les Clefs d'Or. Robert has also held the positions of International Delegate for the Golden Keys of Great Britain and Treasurer of the Golden Keys of Great Britain in addition to being a member for over 40 years. He is currently an active member of the Les Clefs d'Or, USA. Fluent in four languages, including Spanish, French and Italian, Robert's international perspective began during his childhood where he was raised in both Uruguay and Costa Rica, and attended a French school before settling back in the United Kingdom to begin his illustrious career. Now based in Washington DC with his wife Paula and son Brooks, Robert Watson offers each guest an in-depth knowledge of Washington DC with a professional and pleasant demeanor.

On this episode of Shaping Success with Wes Tankersley, Wes talks to Robert Watson, a returned guest, about his upcoming book Ars Victoris: What Makes Life Better. It comes out the first week of February. Robert and Wes discuss how people cannot accept failures. The reality is failures are necessary before achieving success. There are lessons with every failure that help people learn. In today's society, failures are not accepted. Everyone gets a participation trophy, so success is not appreciated like it once was. Robert recounts his days playing basketball and how his coach motivated him to do better by humiliating him. The mindset in those days is second place is the first loser. The coach did and said things that aren't accepted today, but for Robert, humiliation was a great motivator. Arnold Schwarzenegger said in his book Be Useful that there is no such thing as a self-made man. Robert and Wes discuss this thought recounting their football days in high school. Both talk about how adjustments were made in the game according to the skill set of the player. The game is a team effort, and success depends on the how the other players execute their responsibilities. Robert is thankful for the guards and wide receivers that blocked and helped other teammates.Robert says his life is not interesting, but the people he's met along the way are amazing. This includes his training instructors. To train properly is to strategize, to achieve the abilities needed, and fearless execution. The key is to get trained by people who actually did the task. Life coaches and people who only read about how to do something won't' cut it. Some advice given by Robert is to declutter life so one can accomplish what he can. He says to do 5 things needing done as early as possible to make the day a success. Control what can be controlled and what is 3 feet in front. It's important to be gradual in starting the process of achieving a goal. If a person wants to run 3 miles, they should start with a half a mile first. People are responsible for their own reaction to a situation. No one else is. Robert discusses dating apps and how they set people up for failure. They are monetized for one's failure. The model is to stay on the app. It can be addicting creating a feeling of euphoria from hits of dopamine. He says the best way to meet someone is through friends. Wes will have Robert on his podcast every Wednesday morning live on YouTube, Facebook, and X breaking down his book and discussing the lessons learned. The live starts 7:00 AM EST. Felicity Jones - The Theory of Everything 3. Julianne Moore - Still Alice 4. Rosamund Pike - Gone Girl 5. Rosamund Pike delivers a ‘she's fabulous but she's evil' performance in Gone Girl. Finally Reese Witherspoon gives one of her grossest (in the best possible way) performances of her career in Wild. Who do you think should have won? Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Robert Watson as they discuss.
Built in 1927, the German ocean liner SS Cap Arcona was the greatest ship since the RMS Titanic and one of the most celebrated luxury liners in the world. When the Nazis seized control in Germany, she was stripped down for use as a floating barracks and troop transport. Later, during the war, Hitler's minister, Joseph Goebbels, cast her as the "star" in his epic propaganda film about the sinking of the legendary Titanic. Following the film's enormous failure, the German navy used the Cap Arcona to transport German soldiers and civilians across the Baltic, away from the Red Army's advance. In the Third Reich's final days, the ill-fated ship was packed with thousands of concentration camp prisoners. Without adequate water, food, or sanitary facilities, the prisoners suffered as they waited for the end of the war. Just days before Germany surrendered, the Cap Arcona was mistakenly bombed by the British Royal Air Force, and nearly all of the prisoners were killed in the last major tragedy of the Holocaust and one of history's worst maritime disasters. Prolific author Robert Watson returns as my guest on this week's episode of Most Notorious. He is the author of "The Nazi Titanic: The Incredible Untold Story of a Doomed Ship in World War II". Award-winning author and historian Robert Watson is my guest this week. He talks about the Confederacy's notorious Libby Prison, located in Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War. Resourceful Union officers, held captive under extraordinarily brutal conditions, managed to pull off a daring prison break in February of 1864. The manhunt that followed would be one of the largest in American history. His book is called "Escape!: The Story of the Confederacy's Infamous Libby Prison and the Civil War's Largest Jail Break". A Jewish Childhood in the Muslim Mediterranean: A Collection of Stories Curated by Lela Sebbar (U California Press, 2023) brings together the fascinating personal stories of Jewish writers, scholars, and intellectuals who came of age in lands where Islam was the dominant religion and everyday life was infused with the politics of the French imperial project. Prompted by novelist Leïla Sebbar to reflect on their childhoods, these writers offer literary portraits that gesture to a universal condition while also shedding light on the exceptional nature of certain experiences. The childhoods captured here are undeniably Jewish, but they are also Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, Egyptian, Lebanese, and Turkish; each essay thus testifies to the multicultural, multilingual, and multi-faith community into which its author was born. The present translation makes this unique collection available to an English-speaking public for the first time. The original version, published in French in 2012, was awarded the Prix Haïm Zafrani, a prize given by the Elie Wiesel Institute of Jewish Studies to a literary project that valorizes Jewish civilization in the Muslim world. Season 2, Ep 6: Reloading lost episodes from the early Final Word. In its second season in early 2016, The Final Word got spicy - it covered white-ball cricket. Having only been about Test matches to this date, Australia's tour of New Zealand for Brendon McCullum's farewell series was enough to make us change our style. The Big Bash was at its peak, the first WBBL had been played, the World T20 was approaching, Shane Watson captained his country again, Virat Kohli had another crazy Australian tour, and a young leg-spinner named Adam Zampa made an impression. Meanwhile, Shane Warne was on reality TV complaining about Steve Waugh. This season was originally recorded for the ABC.
