Companies have procedures about what to do if one of their team members has a death in the family, must take care of a child who is sick, or is suffering from a long-term illness. But although 10% of their workforce goes through a divorce every year, most companies don't have plans to support these employees. Fortunately, my guest for today's episode, Sheri Atwood, is an expert in this area. Sheri is CEO and Founder of SupportPay, which offers first-of-its-kind employee benefits for divorce and separation. Listen in as we discuss the stigma of divorce in the workplace and its implications for employees and managers, what companies can do about divorce inequality, and more.
With over 39 million parents raising children in non-nuclear households, how do employers support divorced parents? I'm joined by Sheri Atwood, Founder and CEO of Supportpay, to discuss mental health in the workplace, the stressors of divorce and raising a family, and how leaders can be more supportive of all employees, regardless of their lived experiences.

We're still on our summer break and using the time to resurface some of our popular conversations. This week, we're talking to Erika Anne Englund about her experience as a former divorce attorney, mediator, and now chief of strategy at SupportPay. The big lesson from this episode? The path we walk can change with the language we use to define it. Erika Anne Englund spent 15 years as a divorce attorney, professional mediator, and law professor before becoming Chief of Strategy at SupportPay. And she tells it like it is — divorce is hard for everyone involved. That's why it's so important to trap the language we use that piles negative emotion on an already difficult situation. To start, let's agree to stop reading articles that have some variant of “Learn to Survive the Holidays after Divorce!” Let's instead assume that survival isn't a choice, and reframe the experience to be one of as much joy as we can muster so that we can be better parents, better co-parents, and happier people. We can do that by sharpening our negotiation skills and Erika helps us on that path. From dealing with conflict to figuring out how to best get to “yes”, you'll be more prepared for difficult conversations after our show this week.Links & NotesJerry Campbell and the Dynamic Tension Between Love and Fear • The Change Paradox PodcastAbout Ericka Anne EnglundYou can find Erika plying her trade at SupportPay — “the first financial platform for helping parents organize, manage, and transfer child support payments between each other.” Erika is internationally recognized for her expertise and ability to bridge the gaps between the worlds of family law, legal tech startups, and single parenting. What does cloud native mean, and what are some design considerations when implementing cloud-native data services? Gwen Shapira (Apache Kafka® Committer and Principal Engineer II, Confluent) addresses these questions in today's episode. She shares her learnings by discussing a series of technical papers published by her team, which explains what they've done to expand Kafka's cloud-native capabilities on Confluent Cloud. Gwen leads the Cloud-Native Kafka team, which focuses on developing new features to evolve Kafka to its next stage as a fully managed cloud data platform. Turning Kafka into a self-service platform is not entirely straightforward, however, Kafka's early day investment in elasticity, scalability, and multi-tenancy to run at a company-wide scale served as the North Star in taking Kafka to its next stage— a fully managed cloud service where users will just need to send us their workloads and everything else will magically work. Through examining modern cloud-native data services, such as Aurora, Amazon S3, Snowflake, Amazon DynamoDB, and BigQuery, there are seven capabilities that you can expect to see in modern cloud data systems, including: Elasticity: Adapt to workload changes to scale up and down with a click or APIs—cloud-native Kafka omits the requirement to install REST Proxy for using Kafka APIsInfinite scale: Kafka has the ability to elastic scale with a behind-the-scene process for capacity planning Resiliency: Ensures high availability to minimize downtown and disaster recovery Multi-tenancy: Cloud-native infrastructure needs to have isolations—data, namespaces, and performance, which Kafka is designed to supportPay per use: Pay for resources based on usageCost-effectiveness: Cloud deployment has notably lower costs than self-managed services, which also decreases adoption time Global: Connect to Kafka from around the globe and consume data locallyBuilding around these key requirements, a fully managed Kafka as a service provides an enhanced user experience that is scalable and flexible with reduced infrastructure management costs. Based on their experience building cloud-native Kafka, Gwen and her team published a four-part thesis that shares insights on user expectations for modern cloud data services as well as technical implementation considerations to help you develop your own cloud-native data system. Even if you craft the perfect divorce agreement, disputes still arise post-divorce. As circumstances change, conflicts come up. So, what should you do when you and your ex disagree? How might you leverage mediation to resolve those conflicts with less frustration and resentment? Erik Wheeler is the Founder and Family Mediator at Accord Mediation, a practice out of Burlington, Vermont, that specializes in divorce and post-divorce mediation. Erik uses conflict resolution and divorce mediation to help couples navigate disagreements around parenting schedules, custody and finances. Erik is also the co-creator of Divorce Peacefully, a webinar designed to educate divorcing couples about the alternatives to litigation—mediation and collaborative divorce. On this episode of Divorce Dialogues, Erik joins Katherine to discuss the most common conflicts that come up after a divorce, explaining why it’s crucial to get granular on the details of your parenting agreement. He describes how a mediator can help facilitate difficult discussions and shares his approach to resolving conflicts like who will claim the children on their taxes and how to split your kid’s expenses. Listen in for Erik’s insight on the challenges that come up when one parent relocates and learn how mediation can help you and your ex find solutions that work well for your family’s future. Topics Covered Erik’s insight on the kinds of conflict that come up after a divorce Why it’s crucial for divorcing couples to get specific on the details of their parenting agreement How the introduction of new partners can exacerbate conflict in divorced couples How a mediator helps facilitate difficult discussions by focusing on interests vs. positions What makes mediation a better option than litigation in finding solutions that work well for your family How to resolve conflicts around who will claim the children on taxes The challenges that come up when one parent relocates Erik’s approach to conflicts around splitting your kid’s expenses (including tuition) Why Erik suggests going to mediation as soon as a conflict arises Connect with Erik Wheeler Accord Mediation: https://www.accordmediationvt.com/ Accord Mediation on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/vermontmediator/ Call (802) 391-4121 Connect with Katherine Miller The Center for Understanding Conflict: http://understandinginconflict.org/ Miller Law Group: https://westchesterfamilylaw.com/ Katherine on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/kemiller1 The New Yorker’s Guide to Collaborative Divorce by Katherine Miller: https://www.amazon.com/New-Yorkers-Guide-Collaborative-Divorce/dp/0692496246 Email: katherine@westchesterfamilylaw.com Call (914) 738-7765 Resources Erik’s Divorce Peacefully Webinar: https://howtodivorcepeacefully.com/ SupportPay: https://supportpay.com/ 2Houses: https://www.2houses.com/en

Sheri Atwood knows all about this and has started a company to help divorced parents amicable settle child care payments. In 2013 she created SupportPay and today the site boasts some 40,000 members. For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.
We have a very special show today. I realized – rather late – that we should do an episode on the CFSI financial solutions lab competition. It’s belated, because the contest is open, now, for its second year of applications, and the deadline is April 7 – just a few days from now. My guests are Ryan Falvey, who heads the lab, plus three of last year’s 9 winners. They are Sheri Atwood of SupportPay; Jerry Nemorin, of LendStreet, and Quinten Farmer of Even. They explain how the competition works, what they are looking for this year, and, from the standpoint of last year’s winners, what they have gotten from participating in the program. FINLAB: The FinLab is investing about $5 million each year in the contest winners, who also receive a huge array of expert advice and access to networks and resources.
