This week, we delve into the complex issue of emotional dysregulation, a common but often misunderstood symptom of ADHD. Emotional dysregulation refers to an impairment or inability to regulate feelings, which can lead to an overreaction to minor setbacks or challenges. This issue is deeply rooted in the science of emotion regulation.And it's central to the sabotage we use on ourselves when we use "I don't wanna" as a strategy for productivity.To better understand this, we reference an article from ADDitude magazine which discusses the role of the amygdala, a part of the brain responsible for emotional reaction and decision-making. Typically, a surge of emotion such as anger or worry triggers the amygdala to send a signal to the cerebral cortex, which can then restrain the emotional response, allowing for a moment of pause and assessment before action. However, in those with ADHD, this amygdala-cortex signaling is significantly weakened, often leading to impulsive reactions to strong emotions.We also discuss "The Resistance," a concept from Steven Pressfield, one of Pete's favorite writers on creativity and motivation. Pressfield describes "The Resistance" as a negative force that aims to distract and prevent us from doing our work, a concept that can be frustratingly familiar to those grappling with ADHD.Emotional dysregulation can have profound impacts on our lives. When faced with a setback or perceived failure, the resultant flood of intense emotions can inhibit our willingness to try again, fueling limiting beliefs and often leading us to use our emotions as an excuse for inaction. However, it's crucial to remember that feelings are fluid and fleeting. My guest today is Grace Aduroja Kolker.  I met Grace through Brian Levinson, my guest on episode 27.  Grace and I had a list of things we were looking forward to talking about and that was disrupted at the last minute.  In fact, we almost didn't record a conversation at all, but then decided to go for it.  Here's what happened: our scheduled call to record the podcast was the evening of the Oscars.  Grace logged into Zoom at the scheduled time which happened to be about 2 minutes after Will Smith walked on stage and slapped Chris Rock for making the joke about Jada Pinkett Smith.  Those of you who know me, won't be surprised to know I was NOT watching the Oscars, so Grace fills me in and I offered for us to delay our recording until after the ceremony was over which she accepted.  In the meantime, I jumped on Twitter to catch up and see the posts coming in including the video of the scene.  When Grace and I got back on Zoom, we talked about what happened and how we each felt impacted.  Maybe we skip the podcast.  Or maybe we talk about this and see where the conversation goes.  So, this is a different angle than I've ever taken on a Make Life Less Difficult podcast where we take a current event (literally it happened just before our conversation), and we share our own reactions, thoughts, and emotions.  We discuss the possible implications, the complexity of the situation, amygdala hijacks, the emotional response of the brain, the desire of the human brain to tell a simple story, and the deep complexity to what happened at the Oscars. I'm deeply grateful to Grace for her willingness to step into this conversation, sharing her reflections, reactions, emotions, and for the opportunity to process something so recent and raw in a way that left both of us feeling more settled in the end. I hope our conversation adds to your own processing of difficult emotional situations whether you watched the Oscars or not.  We are each deeply complex human beings, with deeply complex stories.  The more we can have compassion for ourselves, the more we can extend that compassion to others.  Notice the judgements you have (they are normal) and also I challenge you to step into a place of curiosity  and see what else you can learn (about yourself and others).And thank you for indulging me in this episode of Make Life Less Difficult which is a bit different than some of the others.  But then again, this entire podcast is an experiment, so perhaps an experimental episode is the norm!  Resources:Blog: What is an Amygdala Hijack? "There is a term sometimes used called 'toxic positivity.'  For sure our thoughts have power and ultimately we want to see the glass as 'half-full,' but absolutely, not at the expense of suppressing emotion."  Sylvia Beasley-Suffolk, Founder Shine True In this very special episode, Sylvia explains the very significant impact our thoughts have on every aspect of our life.  Our thoughts can of course serve us or make us miserable. Sylvia uses my Oktoberfest story, where I unravelled over not finding my dirndl hours before the event and how that brought up surprisingly strong emotions for me around not feeling confident and comfortable in my own body.  She explains the concept of the energy body and its components; mental, emotional & physical body.  It holds our subconscious beliefs as well as our suppressed emotions.  So many of our core beliefs, learned in childhood, we may not even be aware of. Beyond explaining why we live in these vicious circles, she gives us the tools to break-out of this unhealthy cycle and get back into the emotional "driver's seat," to live a more balanced and happier life.   Humans are absolutely wired to AVOID pain and seek pleasure.  We are far more driven by "loss aversion" than the prospect of gain.  These "dinosaur" brain reactions can inform how we both see and react to our environment.  Sylvia explains what an "amygdala hijack" is and how to recognize when this is happening.  Science continues to uncover just how connected our physical health is to our emotional state.  Not addressing our emotional pain can be at our personal physical peril.  There can be no "wealthy warriors" without both physical and mental well-being.   Health is an unremovable piece of living a wealthy life.  For this reason, I have asked Sylvia to do this podcast along with a lovely meditation at the end.  Her meditation is to help get you "grounded" and return to a more balanced state of mind. Conversational Intelligence® is very powerful because it has a strong scientific foundation. It is based on anthropology and neuroscience. When questioning your biases, sit back and ask yourself, “how did I get to that belief system?” There are three levels of conversations: Level 1 is sharing information; Level 2 is advocating for what you believe (make sure not to prophesize your beliefs); and Level 3 is asking questions that open up a dialogue (builds trust, makes you feel you are listened to and creates safe space for innovation and creativity) Double-clicking is a useful technique to help you overcome difficulty in conversations. It is asking questions such as, “can you tell me more about that?” Essentially, it revolves around asking questions you don't have answers to so you can understand where somebody else is coming from. Diffusing tensions in conversations through asking questions helps you understand the person you are talking to. By moving closer into their space, you are able to make the conversation more positive. When you understand how chemicals affect your brain in conversations, you can fight imbalances and shift from having fear-based conversations to trust-based conversations.   This is what happens in your brain when you feel attacked in a conversation: “Amygdala Hijack is what people go through when they are attacked. You can be attacked in many ways, not just physically. You can be attacked by being ignored, you can be attacked by being insulted, and so on. Peace of Mind “Mind Set” – Part 3 (Peace of Mind) Text: Colossians 3:2-5 / Phil. 4:6-9 Colossians 3:2-5 (NKJV) 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. 5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Philippians 4:6-9 (NASB) 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all [a]comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is [b]lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, [c]dwell on these things. 9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. You can't have a positive life with a Negative mind. Write out your 2 biggest worries… Really over exaggerating for some…and others of you are like…you left a lot of things off that list! So let's talk about WORRY and the MIND, and how you can have PEACE of MIND! Your life will always move in the direction of your strongest thoughts. This is good if you have your mind SET on GOD and things above…not so good if you are focused on other things! Any time you're: Afraid—Anxious—Worried— It Compounds the issues at hand. We have a little almond shaped portion in our brain called the — Amygdala —Whenever you are afraid, this is in full alert mode. Amygdala—Helpful Part of the brain Wired for Survival—Responsible for fear. When your brain senses Danger— the Amygdala kicks in sending strong doses of Adrenalin to your body! The Problem is that our Amygdala is not objective —It is hard wired to protect us. The Amygdala needs help from Prefrontal Cortex—the Logical part of our brain. Noise at night—Amygdala tells you, you are Going to die—Prefrontal Cortex reasons what it could be. Jesus didn't say: Let your hearts be troubled! (Do not…) Angel didn't say: Glory God in highest—Stress/anxiety on earth. Paul didn't say: Be anxious about everything! Phil 4:6-7 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. All we can do now is PRAY? Why is that our LAST OPTION? It should be our FIRST OPTION!! Prayer is powerful! Boldly go before throne grace… Not only does prayer move the heart of God. Prayer changes the chemistry in your brain. A few decades ago—Neurologists believed brain didn't change after adolescence. Neuroplasticity — We have learned that our brain is continually changing—thoughts change brain. Neurotheology — Also known as Spiritual Neuroscience Studies relationship between: Brain & Belief in God. Prayer changes brain. “It has been found that 12 minutes of daily focused prayer over an 8 week period can change the brain to such an extent that it can be measured on a brain scan.” Dr. Caroline Leaf author of Switch On Your Brain Just as toxic—Negative thoughts—Hurt brain. – Pre-programming us for unhealthy thinking and living Prayer heals—Renews the MIND – Romans 12 – Do not be conformed to the patterns, thought processes or the WAYS of this world, but be TRANSFORMED (be MADE DIFFERENT)…how is that possible – by the RENEWING of your MIND! God's Word renews your mind, and Prayer Transforms your thinking about God, about reality and about what is and is not possible! So then, Why do we worry? Panic? Anxiety? Many different reasons…we are xperiencing an Amygdala Hijack. Your brain tells you in the middle of the night…that you have to prepare for the worst case scenario…if you don't the WORST is going to happen to you, to your family, etc… Neuroscience would tell you it is an Amygdala Hijack… Paul would say—Mind is dominated by sinful thinking. What is worry? Worry is the sin of distrusting the promises and power God? – It's saying, God I don't believe you are good enough to take care of this…I better take care of it without you! God, I just can't trust you with this! Instead of letting my sinful nature control my mind, I will choose to let my brain choose the Truth that the Spirit will direct me to think. Romans 8:5-6 (NLT) 5 Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. 6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. This is why we need to… Take every thought captive. So if there is a thought we have that is not consistent with the WORD OF GOD, we take that thought captive and we make it obey and follow what the Word of God tells us! (Obedient to Christ). When we choose the Word of God…we are allowing the Spirit of God to lead us in our thinking! The Spirit of God is not going to go against the WORD of God. Prefrontal Cortex grabs the Amygdala and gives every worry to God. Prayer Box — STRATEGY — Do what I can do. Give God what I can't do Trust God no matter what. Imagine having a true Heart of Peace, Life that is full of Joy, and constantly having true Peace of Mind, because you are totally Trusting in God. THAT IS possible. And it's also a choice. If your life is moving in the direction of your strongest thoughts…Do you like the direction your thoughts are taking you? If you don't control what you think You will never control what you do. Identify the truth that will MAKE you free from the bondage of fear and anxiety… Then you —Write it. Think it. Confess. Until you Believe it. Jesus First in my life. My purpose is to serve and glorify Him Alone. Jesus in me is stronger than my sinful desires. I'm getting closer to Jesus every day. Because of Jesus, my family is closer, my body is stronger, my faith is deeper, my brain is sharper. I am victorious—because the Holy Spirit dwells within me. I place my words, thoughts and imaginations under the power of Jesus. I am not a hostage to unhealthy thoughts. The weapons I fight with are not the weapons of this world. I have divine power to demolish strongholds. Worry is not my master. I trust in God alone. God's peace guards my heart, guards my mind, and guards my soul in Christ Jesus. I am not a slave to habits. I am not a prisoner to an addiction. I have been rescued from the power of darkness and brought into the kingdom of God's light. You can't control what happens to you but you can control how you frame it. Stop interpreting God through circumstances. Start interpreting your circumstances through goodness of God. (There is a plan, He's allowing it for a reason). Cover everything you do in prayer! Don't Believe the LIE (anything that is not consistent with God's Word, anything that exalts itself against the knowledge of God…anything that would make your worries bigger than your God) Embrace the TRUTH. Jesus is Truth, His Word is Truth…His Ways are truth… 
And the Truth will MAKE you FREE (Free from Fear, Free from anxiety, free from worry…)

The CEO tells the VP Marketing candidate he’d hire her if she lost 20 pounds. She’s “too fat to represent our company.”The VP Operations tells her team if they were competent they would’ve achieved their quarterly goals.The CFO sends the Controller an angry email saying his budget “sucks and is pathetic.”The VP Product Development says “deal with it” when the favorite lead engineer and keeper of the culture quits.What do all these leaders have in common?They aren’t emotionally intelligent. They are sending “nasty-grams” to their teams and causing emotional disengagement and shutdown in others. They have low EQ.And EQ = money, according to Drs. Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves (see resources below).“The link between EQ and earnings is so direct that every point increase in EQ equals $1,300 to an annual salary. If that’s not enough, EQ accounts for 58% of performance in all types of jobs”.All. Wow.So let’s figure this out in a straightforward way. First, i’ll summarize emotional intelligence and you’ll see a handy infographic in the show notes: Here’s how to start becoming more emotionally intelligent:1. Figure out what you’re feeling. It’s essential to be in tune with your emotions—this is Self-Awareness. Now based on what you are feeling, is it the appropriate time to send that angry email? Right now it’s key to remember that communication is redundant: humans cannot *not* communicate—our facial expressions, body posture, vocal tone/pace/pitch betray us. Even in email or texts our vocal tone/pace/pitch can be detected.You know what it feels like to receive an email when someone is spewing anger or venting frustration. You also know what it feels like when someone handles a challenging situation with compassion, a spirit of collaboration, and overall respect and kindness. People can tell. Your vocal tone does indeed come through in written communication.2. Take a breather. Holding off on sending a nasty-gram until you cool down is Self-Management. We need to shift out of Critter State [fight/flight/freeze or Amygdala Hijack] into Smart State [clear thinking, behavioral choice, innovation, collaboration, creativity] in order to practice Self-Management. Now is a great time to unpack the visual, auditory and kinesthetic cues that triggered you. And if you’re in Critter State one of the easiest ways to shift out of it and into Smart State is to practice 7-7-7 breathing. Inhale for a count of 7, hold for count of 7, exhale for count of 7. Do 7 times. Ahhhhh. Now you have choice to respond vs. react compulsively. Excellent!3. Consider the recipient. While you are practicing #1 or #2 above, consider what the recipient might feel upon receiving your communication. This is Social Awareness. They are a different person from you, so they’ll likely make different meaning—they’ll interpret your communication–based on their Map of the World and not yours. Many components factor into a person’s map of the world, such as education, where they grew up, socio-economics, religion, childhood experiences, adult experience—which is why we misunderstand one another so often: we all have different maps.This consideration is Social Awareness.4. Focus on the outcome. What is the outcome you’d actually like to achieve? How would you like to make someone feel in order to empower them and move the ball forward? It’s time to craft a message that will get the result you want and make the person feel powerful, effective, enrolled, engaged, whatever positive emotion you want. This is Relationship Management.Let’s revisit the above real-world scenarios. When I was asked to come in and coach these leaders to become more Emotionally Intelligent they had team members ready to quit, some were totally checked out and no longer cared, some were downright hostile due to prolonged mistreatment. So I had my work cut out for me.Once the leaders were in touch with their feelings and had boosted their Self-Management and Self-Awareness, we then worked on Social Awareness and Relationship Management. This transformation took 4-6 months (based on the leader) to become an automatic response.When I asked each of them how they would’ve navigated the scenarios above were they able to turn back time, here’s how the communications were edited (yes, after the fact, but better than repeating the mistake!).The CEO tells the VP Marketing candidate she has great skills and he’d like to explore how she can best represent the company.The VP Operations asks her team what they need to achieve their goals next time. Did she set the bar too high? Were they all too ambitious? Do they need more/different resources? Were there cross-functional dependencies that we all missed considering?The CFO meets with the Controller and works through expectations for the budget, filling in any gaps so what defines “success” is super clear. The Controller feels safe to ask questions and push back on things they disagree with.The VP Product Development sits down with the team and lets them express their grief without judging them. Then she asks what the team needs to heal and move forward, noting that they’ll tackle this together, as a team, all for one, and one for all.How emotionally intelligent are you? Humans like all animals are hard wired to survive and where life is on the line the quickest response is reflex or instinct which short circuits rational thought. This is the Amygdala Hijack. Most of human behaviour is driven by emotion and has little logic behind it. In addition to this we are tribal and are programmed to respond to structure hierarchy and leadership and therefore often act without questioning authority figures. The more intelligent someone is the more possible it is for them to think rationally but in an emotional state no one can. Even the human quest for significance is an artificial construct where what we really seek is understanding and valuing of our emotions. This origins of of a lot of extremism is of the disintegrated members of society who find an illusion of understanding and value and acceptance in an extremist group. It is also well known that during elections the electorate votes on how it feels not what it thinks and questions the validity of democracy. We therefore controlled by our emotions. Professionals take emotion out of their decision making by being so well versed in the knowledge of what to do in specific situations that they are able to act reflexly without the need for conscious thought. Otherwise in an emergency and without training no one can think rationally. Next session we discuss how to start taking some control back from our emotions in order to get us closer to peace of mind.
