Dr David Martin is truly an extraordinary man who has achieved so much in so many different sectors and disciplines.  He joins Hearts of Oak to unpack a number of aspects of what has been behind the last four years of destabilisation.  We start 20 years ago, in 2003 Dr Martin published a briefing on Coronavirus.  Why was this on his radar 2 decades ago?  We explore the hidden world of funding for pharma and research, which is widely unknown to the public.  Yet it needs to be called out and Dr Martin has had some backlash for pointing out Vivek Ramaswamy's links to this.   Is the motive behind all of this simply profit?  'Profit with Impunity' is a phrase that Dr Martin used in his speech in the UK Parliament back in December 2023 and we analyse that phrase.  But its not just about money, it is a power grab and a reassessment of what freedoms we are allowed.  There really is so much information packed into this interview, with people like Dr David Martin around, the truth will always come out. Dr. David Martin founded M·CAM® in 1998 and has served as its CEO and Chairman since that time. M·CAM® has been an international intangible asset underwriter and analyst firm spanning work in innovation finance, trade, and intangible asset finance. Dr. Martin is the developer of several innovation-based quantitative indices of public equities and is the Founder of the Purple Bridge Funds.  He managed the Innovation Alpha ETFs (NYSE:INAU; NYSE:INAG; and NYSE:TWAR).  He is the creator of the public equity index – the CNBC IQ100 powered by M·CAM® which now is reported as a leading economic indicator for the U.S. and Global Innovation Economy published by The Conference Board.  As a spokesperson for global financial and intangible asset accountability and quality reform, Dr. Martin has worked closely with the United States Congress and numerous trade and financial regulatory agencies in the United States, Europe, and Asia in advocating and deploying infrastructure to support growing reliance on contract and proprietary rights in business transactions. Under the leadership of Dr. Martin, M·CAM® has supported the modernization of banking, intangible asset, tax, and accounting laws through its work with oversight agencies and policy makers. This work included work with the United States Congress, the Financial Accounting Standards Board, the United States Departments of the Treasury and Commerce, the European Union and many other countries. Dr. Martin received his undergraduate (BA) from Goshen College, his Masters of Science from Ball State University, and his Doctorate (PhD) from the University of Virginia. Courage is not a character trait that is limited to a select few but rather a skill that can be cultivated through deliberate practice.Unless we repetitively practice the high-stress, emotion-laden situations in which we aspire to be courageous, we will never magically become skillful in those moments.Jim Detert is a Professor in the Leadership and Organizational Behavior area at the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business Administration and a Professor of Public Policy at the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. In his book “Choosing Courage: The Everyday Guide to Being Brave at Work” he explores how to be 'competently courageous' so that our courage pays off for us and for our organizations.Jim and Greg talk about how to instill a habit of courage, how to overcome the fear of potential negative consequences work-wise or socially, and how to create accurate risk assessments when it comes to choosing the right battles. They also discuss the prevalent inconsistency within organizations that profess to value individuals with courage while, in actuality, demonstrating a reluctance to embrace them and how to change the structural policy and behavioral conditions to truly facilitate courage in the workplace.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:How do you power-through emotion-laden situations?35:25: If you're going to act skillfully in high-stress, emotion-laden situations, you have to practice in high-stress, emotion-laden situations. Practicing in a cognitively cool manner is what a lot of us do, and it's why most of us walk out of a room after and go 30 seconds later. Oh sh*t, I should have said this during the because what happens is your amygdala hijacks your executive functioning, and unless we practice repetitively trying to stay in the moment during that hijacking and tamp it down and act, we'll never just magically be skillful in those moments. In a true learning culture, nobody has to pretend they're perfect19:27: In a true learning culture, nobody has to pretend they're perfect, and nobody has to pretend that they can't be corrected in public. The key to sorting out a troublemaker  23:42: If you were going to help a recruiter sort out the difference between a chronic troublemaker versus a legitimate truth-teller who simply wanted to draw its right and improve the organization, I think to me it's a matter of patterning. So if a person has had a pattern of successful jobs they've been in for some time and then has a single situation where they are able to explain why it didn't work out, that to me is different than a person who's had seven jobs in the last six years. And for whom every single organization has somehow been toxic and had a terrible boss. At some point, when you are the only consistent thing in a pattern of different situations, you're the problem. The role of leaders30:02: The role of leaders, particularly senior leaders, is to change the structural policy and behavioral conditions so that they get the learning behaviors they need without people thinking it's courageous.Show Links:Guest Profile:Faculty Profile at University of Virginia, Darden School of Business Professional Profile on Psychology TodayJim Detert's WebsiteJim Detert on LinkedInHis Work:Choosing Courage: The Everyday Guide to Being Brave at WorkJim Detert on Google Scholar

This week, Craig sits down with Jim Detert to explore the topic of courage. Jim is a professor at the Darden Graduate School of Business and the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. Jim's research focuses on workplace courage, improvement-oriented voice (why people speak up or stay silent at work) and ethical decision-making and behavior. He believes systemic change is impossible without individual change from top to bottom in organizations. That's why he focuses on helping people honestly examine themselves, what drives them and holds them back and what skills they must develop and personal commitments they must make if things are going to be different. When research-based theories are applied through innovative experiential learning, people build confidence in their ability to say and do the right things despite risk. Choosing Courage represents nearly two decades of learning how to help people on this journey. Jim Detert, Ph.D. shows us how. Why Courage Matters. Courage matters firstly for ourselves. Acts of courage define our legacy, and our biggest regrets tend to be inactions. Secondly, courage is important for organizations. Courage is fundamental to innovation because innovation is about challenging the status quo. (11:16)Emotional Intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is not the lack of emotions, rather the ability to read other's emotional state and channel your own emotions properly. Emotions are information. For example, if you give a presentation in a monotone way, it won't garner any excitement for the idea. Similarly, ignoring a coworker's reddening face won't deescalate a situation. (24:36)How to Lead Courage. Leaders must acknowledge that fear exists and work towards a culture that promotes and protects courage. This includes modeling courageous actions, defending employees that are courageous, and examining potential barriers to bravery like financial and promotion incentives.(35:48)

If you believe that what we're seeing today in the “Covid Crisis” is new, Dr. David Martin is here to challenge that thought. He points to historical evidence of how conformity, constriction, and conditioning has been at play for centuries. In doing so, it has inhibited people from truly grasping what it means to be alive and to live in truth. In this episode, Dr. David Martin also scratches the surface of the economic downfall we can expect to see in 2028, in a follow up episode he'll share how to prepare. Dr. David Martin is the founder, CEO, and Chairman of M-CAM. He's the developer of several innovation-based quantitative indices of public equities and is the Founder of the Purple Bridge Funds. He managed the Innovation Alpha ETFs (NYSE:INAU; NYSE:INAG; and NYSE:TWAR). He is the creator of the public equity index – the CNBC IQ100 powered by M·CAM which now is reported as a leading economic indicator for the U.S. and Global Innovation Economy published by The Conference Board. Martin, M·CAM has supported the modernization of banking, intangible asset, tax, and accounting laws through its work with oversight agencies and policy makers. This week he joined me on the On Brand podcast for a timely discussion about artificial intelligence and marketing—how should we be thinking about it and what should we be planning for the new year ahead. About Raj Venkatesan Rajkumar Venkatesan is the co-author of The AI Marketing Canvas: A Five-Stage Road Map to Implementing Artificial Intelligence in Marketing. He is the Ronald Trzcinski Professor of Business Administration in the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia. His writing has appeared in the Journal of Marketing and Harvard Business Review, among others, and he is the co-author of Marketing Analytics (2021). For more information, please visit the book's website. Episode Highlights & Takeaways “AI is something that's going to help marketers,” Raj began, noting that many worry about AI being something new and different. “If you're in marketing, you do what you do best. Provide excellent and superior customer service. And what AI does is allow you to scale this customer service and personalize it.” Where should marketers get started with AI? “Start with first-party customer data—you have to have a strong data foundation. From here, you look for value pockets where AI can help you scale.” A good reminder/warning about your data: “You will never have perfect data. And if you wait for it, it will be too late—your competition will beat you there.” What brand has made Raj smile recently? Raj began by claiming that I made him smile. Host flattery? I'm here for it. Raj followed up with his real brand smile—Ford. Recently, the automaker announced that they've stopped taking orders for the new electric Ford F-150. This made Raj smile as it's a good sign that we're moving away from fossil fuels. Jim Detert is the author of Choosing Courage: The Everyday Guide to Being Brave at Work - a  research-based guide for standing up and speaking out skillfully at work. Have you ever wanted to disagree with your boss? Speak up about your company's lack of diversity or unequal pay practices? Make a tough decision you knew would be unpopular?   In this episode, Jim discusses the moral imperative and research-based tactics to help you become more competently courageous at work. Doing for courage what Angela Duckworth has done for grit and Brene Brown for vulnerability, Jim explains that courage isn't a character trait that only a few possess; it's a virtue developed through practice.    Jim is also a professor at the Darden Graduate School of Business and the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia.     Key Takeaways [4:25] When we think of courage, we often think of our heroes; the military and firefighters; but Jim has a different definition of what courage looks like in the workplace. [6:25] Unfortunately, work has a lot of risks and people are often afraid to speak up. You can be seen as courageous just by simply doing your job and doing what's right. [9:25] Jim breaks down the difference between being inspired by something vs. being inspired to do something. [10:10] It was important to Jim to tell and highlight stories the everyday person can relate to. [11:50] Jan explains what compassionate candor looks like. [13:10] It's the leader's job to take on risks, apologize, and be there for their people. Courage comes when there is a baseline safety within an organization. [17:45] People often view workplace courage as an act, but it doesn't have to be. It's actually a process. Jim explains more about how courage really works. [21:40] By having options, by being highly sought after in their field, it's easier for people to be courageous. [25:05] People are fed up. Instead of trying to fix a broken organization from within, they'd rather completely opt out and resign. [30:10] The jury is still out on how fundamental the changes are going to be that the pandemic has had on society. [32:35] As people are leaving the workforce, we have to also look at the people who are staying in the workforce, and really evaluate if their needs are being met. [34:45] Your inner dialogue can completely distort your entire reality and make it harder for you to work with your external dialogue. [38:35] Leaders need to shift the frame from “you” language to “we” language. Aim to create win-win scenarios and try not to alienate your people with the words you use. [41:10] Listener challenge: Choose courage and decide today to take one step towards that.   Quotable Quotes “By presenting stories of every race, gender, political persuasion, and income level, I hope people let go of that myth that courage is for someone special.” You don't need courage to have difficult conversations. You need to care about your people so deeply you are able to compassionately provide candid feedback. Work on the inner dialogue so as to not destroy the external dialogue.   Resources Mentioned Sponsored by: Darley.com Connect with Geoff: Jimdetert.com and Jim on LinkedIn Jim's latest book: Choosing Courage: The Everyday Guide to Being Brave At Work Amy C. Few buzzwords have been as hot or used as "artificial intelligence" or "AI" and "machine learning" in the last few years. Marketers are pitched dozens of tools and approaches each month my martech companies promising this is how one or other other will revolutionize your business. But the reactions to using AI for marketing are mixed. Some joyously say "yes" and dive in hoping they figure it out. Others are scared that it requires massive investments in staff and technology just to have a modest practice using AI. Raj Venkatesan joined Digging Deeper to talk about his new book, The AI Marketing Canvas - A Five-Stage Road Map to Implementing Artificial Intelligence in Marketing, which is a how-to book for marketers and businesses looking to build smart AI strategies. The book is co-authored by Jim Lecinscki. Venkatesan is also the Ronald Trzcinski Professor of Business Administration in the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia, and the co-author of the book Marketing Analytics. He explained the difference in AI and machine learning, talked about neural networks and deep learning, then took us through the five stages of the AI Marketing Canvas. We marvel at historic and contemporary figures who have demonstrated acts of courage in their lives and wonder, "how did they do it?" In today's episode, author and researcher Jim Detert shares why "competent courage" - the skillful and deliberate decision to do what's risky, because it's right - is not an innate quality possessed by only a few, but a calculated choice that can be developed by all. Jim highlights the qualities of courageous individuals and outlines an effective sequence for taking action. ABOUT JIM: Jim Detert is the John L. Colley Professor of Business Administration in the Leadership and Organizational Behavior area at the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business Administration and a Professor of Public Policy at the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. How do Marines - how do leaders of all kinds - make the right decisions in technology-enhanced warfare? Historically, people were trained on how to reliably react in highly predictable and reoccurring conditions. However, in the Digital Age, the past will no longer be a good predictor of the future. Technology will have the ability to continuously create new ways of doing – reacting at a speed faster than humans can normally react. So, how will you train leaders and Marines to react quickly and correctly in continuous changing environments enabled by technology? How does an individual train him or herself to be highly adaptable real-time so she or he can process incoming stimuli quickly and correctly without “bias”? What state of “being” do people need to be in to excel in such environments? This brings us to Hyper-Learning. Why Hyper-Learning? The past will no longer be a reliable predictor of the future because of the pace of technological change & its impact. Human Agility & adaptation will become strategic imperatives. Human cognitive, behavioral & emotional excellence will be key. Hyper-learning is high-quality, continual, fast learning, and will be necessary to keep pace with the speed of change and to successfully explore the unknown, adapt continually, and upgrade our internal cognitive operating system—our mental models. Learn – Unlearn – Relearn @ the speed of change. Edward D. Hess is Professor Emeritus of Business Administration, Batten Fellow and Batten Executive-in-Residence Emeritus at the Darden Graduate School of Business, University of Virginia, and the author of Hyper-Learning: How to Adapt to the Speed of Change, which was published by Berrett-Koehler in August 2020. This is the first DT101 Books episode. Karen Hold joins us on the show to talk about Experiencing Design: The Innovator's Journey, a book she co-authored with Jeanne Liedtka and Jessica Eldridge. In DT101 Books episodes, authors explore why their book exists and what it will help you do. Each book is chosen because it has something that will help you think and solve like a designer as you learn, lead and apply design thinking.  Our Guest and Her Co-Authors Jeanne Liedtka is a faculty member at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia. Her Columbia Business School Publishing books include Designing for Growth: A Manager's Toolkit (2011) and Design Thinking for the Greater Good: Innovation in the Social Sector (2017). Karen Hold is the founder of Experience Labs, an innovation consulting firm. She is also the director of DT:DC, a design thinking community in Washington, DC, and a visiting professor at École des Ponts Business School in Paris, France. Jessica Eldridge is a consultant working at the intersection of educational equity and purposeful innovation. She is a specialist in design thinking, innovation management, and cross-sector collaboration.   About Experiencing Design: The Innovator's Journey In daylong hackathons, design thinking seems deceptively easy. On the surface, it involves a set of seemingly simple activities such as gathering data, identifying insights, generating ideas, prototyping, and experimentation. But practiced at a superficial level, even great design tools don't go deep enough to create the shifts in mindset and skill set that are required to achieve transformational impact.  Going deep with design requires more than changing the activities of innovators; it involves creating the conditions that shape who they become. Individuals become design thinkers by experiencing design. Drawing on decades of researching and teaching design thinking to people not trained in design, Jeanne Liedtka, Karen Hold, and Jessica Eldridge offer a guide for how to create these deep experiences at each stage of the design thinking journey, whether for an individual, a team, or an organization.  For each experience phase, they specify the mindset shifts and competencies that need to be achieved, describe how different personality types experience different kinds of journeys, and show how to fully leverage the diversity of teams. Experiencing Design explores both the science and practicalities of design and includes two assessment instruments for individual and organizational development. Ultimately, innovators need to be someone new to create something new. This book shows you how to use design thinking to make this happen.   Show Highlights [00:56] Dawan muses on trying to come up with a name for the podcast book episodes. He has worked closely with the United States Congress and numerous trade and financial regulatory agencies in the United States. Dr. Martin is also a Batten Fellow at the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business Administration. Since 1999, Dr. Martin has been actively tracking patent applications and approvals for the purpose of identifying suspicious activity. In the 94-minute video shown below, he shares the findings from his research regarding the laboratory development of a pathogenic coronavirus that started in 1999 and released initially upon human populations in the SARS CoV-1 in 2002-2003, then again in MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome in 2012, and then again in SARS CoV-2 which was renamed COVID-19, as shown below with evidence from the primary development lab in Wuhan China. In my opinion, his research proves that all of these pathogenic variants of the coronavirus were laboratory developed, man-made bioweapons. And they've all been funded by the NIAID under the direction of a self-proclaimed Jesuit, Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Patterns in Nature (0:00:00) Nature has a funny way of repeating herself–literally. Did you know that the patterns of a tiger's stripes are also seen on some types of sea anemone? And what about snowflakes, whose individual arms are almost exactly identical? If you look very closely at the beautiful world around us, you'll begin to see breathtaking patterns that seem impossible to explain.  So, what can we learn from this mysterious phenomenon? Joining us on the show today is Philip Ball, a science writer from the UK, here with us to talk about the patterns we find in nature.   Hyper-Learning (0:20:14) Learning is a process right? At least, that's what I was told all through school. You learn principle upon principle until you understand the whole picture and each of its individual parts. However, COVID has forced us to think and learn differently. Instead of learning bit by bit, as things had changed on what feels like a weekly basis, we've had to adapt to learning, un-learning, and re-learning all at the pace of change. It's a brisk mental pace—one that Edward Hess, professor of Professor of Business Administration at the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia calls Hyper-learning. Here to discuss hyper-learning and how we can learn to adapt quicker, better is author of “Hyper-Learning: How to Adapt to the Speed of Change”, is Edward Hess himself.   Helping Kids Love Books (0:35:57) You know the old saying, “you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink?” It feels like sometimes, that how it feels trying to get a child to read. With so many other distractions in their world, it can sometimes be hard for a kid to sit still and read at a slow pace. So what should you do if you're worried your child won't even pick up a picture book? Joining us on the show today is Dr. Molly Ness, a literary specialist and associate professor at Fordham University, here with us to talk about how to inspire a love of reading in your kids.   Storytelling (0:52:45) Storyteller Sam Payne of BYU Radio's The Apple Seed joins Lisa and Richie to tell a new story.   Mentalism (1:11:17) You've likely heard of the TV show The Mentalist, featuring “psychic detective” Patrick Jane. But what if writers of the Mentalist weren't so far-off base from real life? What if they were drawing from stories that have been circulating in pop culture for years? What if there did exist those who can, simply by using their powers of focus and suggestion, will events into happening? Well, today we're going to find out! Here to discuss mentalism and his decades-long adventures is pop icon mentalist, The Amazing Kreskin!   Weekend Review (1:26:17) Lisa and Richie talk about what there is to do this weekend, from the New York Times Bestseller list to the newest shows coming to streaming services.

In this edition of Columbia Energy Exchange, host Bill Loveless talks with Anthony Artuso, an executive scholar at the University of Virginia’s Center for Economic and Policy Studies, just weeks after Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam signed the new Virginia Clean Economy Act. Anthony is part of a team at the UVA center working on clean energy modeling and policy analysis in Virginia. He’s also collaborating with a group of faculty and staff at UVA’s Darden Graduate School of Business on economic and sustainability issues, focusing again on clean energy. In addition to his work at UVA, Anthony is a member of the advisory board of the 100% Clean Energy Collaborative convened by the Clean Energy States Alliance, a nonprofit coalition of public agencies and organizations working together to advance clean energy. Previously, he did research and consulting for U.S. government agencies, state governments, the World Bank and the UN on issues related to clean energy, environmental policy and sustainable development. He holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental science from Columbia University, a master’s degree from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and a PhD in natural resource policy and management at Cornell University. Bill reached Anthony at his home in Charlottesville, Virginia.

I really enjoyed my conversation with Peter. First, I want to acknowledge that this is a sponsored interview, and we’re grateful to Verizon for their support of Beyond the Uniform, as well as how they have hired over 11,000 Veterans and thousands of military spouses. However, there’s only about six minutes of this interview that are directly about Verizon in a way that may be seen as sales-e.   Peter is such a fantastic speaker and storyteller. Immediately after our interview, I set up a call with Peter to chat more, because he is a great guy and has a really valuable perspective on career transitions. One of the aspects I love about our conversation is how Peter took one small aspect of his military service - how much he loved land navigation in the Marine Corps - and how he used this in his search for his next job… which happens to be in commercial real estate as a lawyer. Not a direct connection many would make, and yet it shows how Veterans can find tangential career paths based on smaller aspects they enjoyed while in the military. I also appreciated Peter’s outlook on life - the mere fact that he has his title as “Happy Lawyer” sends a message to everyone he meets and, more importantly, send a strong message to himself about who he wants to be on a daily basis… even on those days where he may not FEEL like a Happy Lawyer. This interview is also a great example of the wide variety of career positions to be found at large companies. For example, with Verizon, many listeners most likely immediately think of phones, or connectivity. But I didn’t think immediately about all the stores, warehouses, and office buildings they have… all that real estate… real estate that needs a strong legal team to obtain and oversee. It’s illustrative of the many potential career aspects below the surface that listeners may not immediately be aware of.   About Peter: Peter Vanderloo is a Happy Lawyer at Verizon, where he has worked for over 18 years. In his current role, he works as a Commercial Real Estate lawyer creating value for internal and external customers from Verizon's amazing, extensive real estate portfolio. He started out in the Marine Corps, where he served for 10 years, most recently as a Company Commanding Officer, where he led an 150 member Light Armored Vehicle company. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Delaware, a JD from the George Washington School of Law, and an MBA from the Darden Graduate School of Business.

In this first episode, our guest is the incredible Jeanne Liedtka. Jeanne has been involved in the corporate strategy field for over 30 years. She's a Harvard Business School graduate and a professor at the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia. In addition, she's a prolific author whose works include The Catalyst: How You Can Lead Extraordinary Growth, which won the Business Week best innovation books of 2009, and, most recently, Design Thinking for the Greater Good Jeanne wandered into design thinking when she was searching for a way to be more effective in teaching managers about strategic planning. In contrast, she points out, most people think of strategic planning as a deadly, dull task of filling out paperwork that never goes anywhere. In her search for ways to make the process more interesting and to convey its importance, she hit on design. In our conversation today, she relates how she began using architecture as a metaphor for strategic thinking. In this episode, Jeanne offers insight into how to teach design thinking. The learning experience should be project-based, she explains. The project should matter to the people who are working on it. The learning experience should also be delivered in a way that meets where these people are in that project and avoids overwhelming them. She'll also discuss some of the challenges that are facing design thinking as it continues to evolve. Jeanne explains why it is that the more you move into designing strategy and policy, the harder it is to use some of the powerful tools of design thinking. Summary & Ideas for Action Jim Gilmore, best-selling author and co-founder of Strategic Horizons LLP, discusses his experiences, books, and the importance of mastering the various modes of observation to innovate and improve decision making. Key Takeaways [6:50] Jim explains how he came to write Look. After studying Edward De Bono, he had an insight into thoughts, actions, and observations, which inspired him about six looking glasses to represent modes of observation. [11:27] The six looking glasses are: Binoculars, for surveying and scanning, Bifocals, for comparing and contrasting views, Magnifying Glass for pinpointing the main point, Microscope, for scrutinizing the details, Rose-colored Glasses, for seeing potential, and Blindfold, for recalling all you have seen. Together they help people see more of what there is to be seen. Observation is separate from cognition. [24:40] Watching people in groups and in detail can reveal unseen patterns of behavior that lead to innovation and disruption.  [26:00] When film was an expense, people framed their photos carefully. We lose our sense of framing by shooting carelessly. We take too many shots to curate. Study a scene carefully and limit yourself to framing one shot. Apply this deliberation to business decisions. Apply it to life. [37:31] The more skilled you are at observing with the first five glasses, the better you will be at recalling blindfolded what you saw. If you don’t look well, you will recall poorly. The best glasses for a leader is to be skilled in using all of them. Particularly consider the bifocals. Pair opposites, and pair things as opposites. All innovation begins with observation. [45:44] Jim sat next to George Carlin on a cross-country flight in 2000. Jim learned how George Carlin worked and filed his observations. He said, everybody observes, but they don’t know where to put the data. George Carlin maintained 2,500 directories where he recorded his daily observations and he knew each category. Come up with a number of categories of things you want to be consciously observing. We have a very special show today. I realized – rather late – that we should do an episode on the CFSI financial solutions lab competition. It’s belated, because the contest is open, now, for its second year of applications, and the deadline is April 7 – just a few days from now.  My guests are Ryan Falvey, who heads the lab, plus three of last year’s 9 winners. They are Sheri Atwood of SupportPay; Jerry Nemorin, of LendStreet, and Quinten Farmer of Even. They explain how the competition works, what they are looking for this year, and, from the standpoint of last year’s winners, what they have gotten from participating in the program. FINLAB:  The FinLab is investing about $5 million each year in the contest winners, who also receive a huge array of expert advice and access to networks and resources. Here’s the information on the competition and how to apply by April 7:  Finlab.cfsinnovation.com. And here is an overview of the full list of last year’s winners. For today’s show, we’re featuring these guests: RYAN FALVEY As a Managing Director at the Center for Financial Services Innovation, Ryan oversees the Financial Solutions Lab, bringing together innovators from the fields of technology, behavioral economics, nonprofit services and design to provide guidance, share best practices and develop scalable financial products. He loves to help organizations solve hard problems. Prior to joining CFSI, Ryan was at Silicon Valley Bank, working with leading technology firms to develop innovative payment products and solutions. He also served as the Strategy Group Lead at Enclude Solutions, overseeing its global strategy consulting work in over 30 countries and supporting the development of several of the world’s most successful mobile-enabled financial products. Ryan has a graduate degree from Yale and an undergraduate degree from UCLA.  Twitter: @TheFinLab, @CFSInnovation Personal Twitter: @Ryan_Falvey SHERI ATWOOD Sheri Atwood, Founder and CEO of SupportPay by Ittavi (acronym for “it takes a village"), is a former Silicon Valley executive, single mom and child of a bitter divorce. Atwood, who was raised by a single mother and was the only person in her family to attend college, married at 19, completed her undergraduate degree in less than 4 years and completed her MBA 10 days before her daughter was born. When Atwood herself divorced at 25, she was the youngest Vice President at Symantec. Before SupportPay, there was no easy way for parents to exchange child support -- and Atwood was so determined to create a solution that she taught herself to code and is today an expert in front-end development. Atwood was named “#5 of 50 Women in Tech Dominating Silicon Valley” and a "Top 40 Under 40 Executive in Silicon Valley."  Website: www.supportpay.com Twitter: @SupportPayApp Personal Twitter: @SheriAtwood JERRY NEMORIN Jerry is founder and CEO of LendStreet. Jerry has been a speaker, guest, and advocate for responsible lending and sustainable financial services on Capitol Hill and industry events such as Finovate, SWIFT Innotribe Competition, Experian's Vision Conference and Credit Suisse Impact Investing Conference.
