JHS Racing have built untold number of race bikes and road bikes, but nothing in the same quantity as the SV650. James Holland - proprietor of JHS Racing - has made knowing all their is to know about the SV his life's work, and Chris Moss chatted to him to find out why, and talk about the success story the SV650 has carved out for him, and for itself.
Hello everyone and welcome once again to Motos and Friends, brought to you by the editors at Ultimate Motorcycling. The Suzuki SV650 has been around for several decades now, and is largely unchanged. Yet the middleweight Suzuki continues to be incredibly popular. Associate Editor Kelly Callan tells us why she continues to rate it as one of her favorite bikes. Our second segment features another of my really good friends, Joel Larson. Joel has been a hardcore motorcycle rider for most of his life and has owned everything from Suzuki Gixxers to several Ducati Multistradas. Joel's extraordinary life started in earnest as a teenage drummer, when he founded the iconic 60s band “the Grass Roots”. They sold some 36 Million records during its heyday. Along his 30 year touring career it can be said that Joel fully embraced the rock n' roll lifestyle, and even these tales told here hint at the sheer joy of living large. One of the nicest people I've ever known, Joel's effervescent, positive appreciation of life is definitely catching. This week on our motorcycle podcast we hear from Award Winning Mike, who has just returned from one of the Leod Escapes tours. He traveled through Austria, Germany and Czech Republic, with the highlight of the tour being 3 days of track riding at the MotoGP track BRNO. Mike gives Cat McLeod's tour 6 out of 5 stars, and can't wait for the next trip. https://www.leodescapes.com/ Next up, Zach tells us about all the trick mods and upgrades he's been doing to his gen 1 Suzuki SV650. He loves this bike and wants to keep it going forever, which brings up the question: Will the SV650 be as beloved in 20 years as the CB750 is now? And also, what is the cause of death of most bikes? Where do they all go? And lastly, Jim gives us a report on his dirt riding adventure that happened to coincide with an extreme enduro race. Motos and Friends, a weekly Podcast brought to you by Ultimate Motorcycling, and powered by the all new Suzuki Hayabusa—the ultimate sportbike. Visit suzukicycles.com to find out more. The ultimate ride awaits! In the first segment Senior Editor Nic de Sena talks about the Suzuki SV650. The iconic SV actually came out over 20 years ago, and it can be argued has subsequently become a cult classic, especially among the racing fraternity. Despite its age, this inexpensive middleweight still works extremely well with massive aftermarket support should you want to go fast with it. In the second segment, Neale Bayly chats with Chuck Huneycutt, the Lead Motorcycle Restoration Expert at the Barber Museum. Chuck is an ex-racer and arguably the leading restorer of racing motorcycles in the country. Needless to say Chuck also gets to ride a lot of them, perhaps the most interesting one of which is the astounding Britten V1000 which is displayed on the top floor of the museum, appropriately just outside the new Design Center. Chuck rode the Britten several times so we get to hear his thoughts on that. 2020 Suzuki SV650X Review: Café and Canyon Ready By Teejay Adams 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa Test: Quicker and More Refined By Arthur Coldwells 2021 Barber Vintage Festival Report: Supermono Project Revealed By Teejay Adams

A motorcycling stalwart, the SV650 has sold in huge numbers since its launch in 1999, and during its lifetime has carried people to work, been the first 'big bike' for many newer riders, and been a great value plaything. It's also filled racing grids and contested the Isle of Man TT! Chris Moss speaks to journalist and racer Alastair Fagan, Mike Dommett from the British Motorcycle Racing Club, builder and tuner James Holland from JHS Racing, and owner Will Browning who commutes, track days, and tours on his SV650.
In this episode I have a really cool chat with Robby Cichielo Jr, in which we discuss how he got into motorcycling, why he prefers riding on the track, and the amazing experiences he has had as an endurance racer, as a racer in the MotoAmerica Twins Cup Series, and as an instructor and coach for N2 Track Days. We also talk about how motorcycles are the great equalizer and how motorcycling brings people together from all kinds of backgrounds and all walks of life. The shared love of motorcycles and motorcycling seems to know no boundaries and melts away differences in gender, race, religion, nationality, economics and the other things that sometimes put up barriers between people. In a nutshell, when true motorcyclists put on their gear and throw a leg over their bike, they are all very much of the same heart and spirit, and they all share a very special bond, one with another. We talk about Robby's experience riding motorcycles, including starting on a Suzuki SV650 at age 14, about 13 years ago. He had a Suzuki GSX-R for a while and eventually bought back his original SV650, which then led to getting started racing in the MotoAmerica Twins Cup Series. We go over how Twins Cup is very much a builder series and how riders and mechanics take bikes like the SV650 and other street bikes which are really designed and intended to be daily commuters and turn them into race machines with souped-up motors and more torque. We also talk about how Robby had to learn how to race the SV650, as it's not a pure race bike and requires a slightly different technique. And we talk about Robby's experience in endurance racing as a member of the 4 Dudes on a Twin race team. I also mention that now that I have read quite a few books about motorcycles and riding technique, I decided it is time to put my understanding to the test and see how well I can apply what I've learned. That's why I want to start riding on the track, and why I recently signed up for the 2-Day Camp with California Superbike School at New Jersey Motorsports Park in May 2020. Robby talks about the fact that often it is easier to teach less experienced street riders good riding technique on the track, as they haven't developed a lot of bad habits that can be hard to get people to break. He sometimes runs into "beginner techniques" that are taught in some basic rider training classes that then have to be unlearned. On the same theme, we talk about how strider bikes have been a great improvement over the bicycles with training wheels that many of us had when we learned to ride on two wheels, as strider bikes are two wheel vehicles and behave like two wheel vehicles, so kids learn balance and counter-steering. Whereas tricycles and bicycles with training wheels behave differently and don't teach the skills needed to ride a two wheeled vehicle. Robby and I also touch upon how buying and owning good, quality riding or track gear is an investment in yourself! Welcome to episode 162. Wiggins is on his way to Portland, Oregon for the One Moto race and show. Mar Banana is keeping his mic warm this week. We talk weather since it seems to be on everyone's mind this week. The Polar Vortex may have faded, but the cold is real and more weather for SoCal is still on the way. Mar (real name Jae) is a super commuter and warrior of the L.A. freeways. I thought she would be a good source to talk about gear since she's in it everyday. You can learn all the fun ways lamp shades and leather can be used to modify your SV650 for commuting. We also play the name game - a vestige from episode 48. That's actually how Mar gets her name this week! You too can learn how legendary field producer Bri Viffer and WIR Top 10 Bikes founder Elw Zuma got their names. Play along and send us YOUR hipster name. Finally, leave us a review or feel free to comment wherever you get our podcast. Chasin' The Racin' Episode 2-Bad Blood In this episode, we round up the week in the world of motorcycle racing, as well as delve into a few topics suggested by the listeners of the show on Twitter. Following the news of Repsol Honda man Jorge Lorenzo breaking his scaphoid in a motorcross accident this week, we discuss the question, is Motorcross training a necessity for professional motorcycle racers, is the reward worth the risk? We then discuss the future of Olivers Mount, followed by an in depth conversation with Dom about his first time riding at the Isle of Man TT. We cover everything from how it all started on a 72bhp SV650, to doing a 128mph lap on his BMW S1000RR in 2018. Please head over to Twitter to vote for the Swear Jar Charity. This is part 2 of our interviews from the AIMExpo 2018. So many people to talk to, so many bikes to see, so many connections made. Really great event. We start off by talking about Liza and her crazy luck gambling, then we head over to the Skully booth, where we hear Terry giving his spiel to Naked Jim, and we get to try out these helmets and see what they really can do. Then we talk to Mike and Kim from Vanson Leathers. They've been making race suits and gear for decades, and continue to make quality products right here in the USA. Next up we hear from Nak, who has a chance to check out Honda's new Super Cub. Is it as cool in person as we are hoping it to be? Listen and find out. Then we talk to the guys at Sea Foam, and ask the question "What exactly does this product do?" The answer is, more than you thought. We also talked to the guys at the EBC Brakes booth, to find out what the difference is between the different types and pads, and which is the right one for your bike. We also find out about Danny, who is their real life Keebler Elf. We run into listener Joe Rubino, and find out what have been some of his highlights from the show so far. Then we talk to Avery at the Suzuki display. He gives us the scoop on the upgrades to bikes like the SV650 and the Vstrom. Pretty cool stuff happening there. Lastly we finish up with our experience at one of the best supercross races we've ever seen. Never look back, is all I'm going to say about this. With Liza, Nak and Naked Jim. Starting out in 2006 as a passenger riding with her husband, she decided to take hold of the bars and ride her own.BikesSV650 was the first bike, but the husband felt this may be a bit much to learn on (see the next bike).Honda Rebel 250 - In response to the first bike, Deb was a little put off by the "baby bike" but eventually came to appreciate the weight for learning, especially picking it up. BMW GS650 (named GOAT after dropping a few times riding in the mountains)1994 BMW R1100 RS1994 BMW R1100 RSL - "new" bike :)The ideaDuring winter while not much riding is going on, Deb reads and article about about the Iron Butt. Being a lover of a good challenge, Deb started mapping out how to complete the Iron Butt SaddleSore 1000. The ridesAfter some conversation with her husband, the planning was on and off she went. After completing the first Iron Butt ride Deb fell in love with long distance riding and has been hooked since. In 2015 Deb completed the Bun Burner 1500 within the 36 allotted hours and covered 1600 miles. This year she is planning to do the 50CC. The plan is to leave from Jacksonville, FL and ride to San Diego CA. On her way back she is planning to stop at the Barber Vintage Festival. Look for the Loud Pipes crew to be there for an update on the ride as we enjoy our second trip to Barber. This episode was great fun for us and we look forward to catching up with Deb in the future.
