"On the debut episode of Syracuse Sports with Brent Axe, Syracuse.com's Brent Axe and Chris Carlson examine the three biggest issues facing SU Orange sports now and over the next decade. Brent and Chris examine if Syracuse can keep up the hyper competitive NIL game, if Syracuse is safe in the ACC with conference realignment heating up again and if football or basketball success is most important for SU. In "One More Thing," Brent takes aim at the Baltimore Orioles' ridiculous suspension of former Syracuse Chiefs announcer and SU alum Kevin Brown. Email Brent Axe at baxe@syracuse.com. Leadership is defined as: Recognizing and capitalizing on personal and team strengths to achieve organizational goals. In this episode, we hear from Greg Victory, G'04, Assistant Vice President, Student Affairs and Fannie Mitchell Executive Director, Career Center at Duke University. Greg received his master's degree in higher education from Syracuse University's School of Education. Previously, Greg served as Executive Director of the Tufts Career Center from 2016-2020, and as Executive Director of Continuing Education at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he was previously Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Director of the RISD Career Center. At Syracuse University, Greg taught in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, led the First-Year and Transfer Programs office, and served as a lead with employer engagement in the Career Center. Greg has also held positions at Colgate University and Ithaca College and taught junior high school social studies. One of Greg's favorite jobs was serving as “Scooch,” mascot for the Syracuse Mets (formerly the Syracuse Chiefs), a AAA baseball club. That position allowed him to “be as goofy as I wanted to be, to bring joy, laughter and excitement to fans,” he said. “It offers a glimpse of my spirit, energy and enthusiasm.” In his free-time he enjoys traveling, food (cooking and exploring new restaurants), and spending time with his partner, David, and puppy, Faya. Career readiness is a foundation from which to demonstrate requisite core competencies that broadly prepare the college educated for success in the workplace and lifelong career management. Career readiness is made up of eight career competencies that all employers want, regardless of industry or discipline.
When he was in the third grade, Marv Albert '63 decided he wanted to become a sportscaster. Albert followed his passion and studied journalism at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Before long, Albert was calling Syracuse Chiefs games alongside fellow Orange legend Carl Eilenberg H'53. But Albert's big break came when another all-time Syracuse great, Marty Glickman '39, hired Albert to be his researcher, spotter, statistician and backup announcer. After a decorated career that spanned 55 years and saw him call 13 NBA finals, eight Super Bowls and eight Stanley Cup finals, Albert retired following the 2021 NBA Eastern Conference Finals. On the latest Cuse Conversation, the Hall of Fame broadcaster discusses his legendary career, how he came up with his signature "YES!" call, how he found his voice at Syracuse University and on WAER, and why calling the 1992 Dream Team's gold medal-winning performance stands out among a litany of amazing sportscasting moments.

The Tao of Sports Podcast – The Definitive Sports, Marketing, Business Industry News Podcast
Look no further than Shawn Smith for the digital strategy success of the NBA Development League, where Facebook "likes" and Twitter "followers" for each team and the NBADL are at astronomical highs, outpacing even some major league professional teams around the globe. Smith speaks about the way that engagement goes beyond just a few metrics, and how the NBADL product was pushed out to build a following that would last for decades. Smith talks about some of the ways to understand how digital channels can be used to foster marketing interest, as well as live attendance growth through a constant content approach. Smith also discusses his new consulting company, From The Stretch, and how he is starting to build real digital strategy for each sports client, starting with the Syracuse Chiefs of the International League.
Emmy-Award winning TV writer, director, producer, screenwriter and major league play-by-play announcer Ken Levine is my guest. Ken has packed in a few lifetimes of dream-chasing and it's all paid off; from writing on TV shows like MASH, Cheers, Frazier to announcing baseball games for the Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres. Paul talks to Ken about his recent blog post on www.kenlevine.blogspot.com in which he challenged actor/producer Zach Braff's use of kickstarter to raise funds for his movie. Ken believes things like kickstarter should be for the up-and-comers, not merely as a pubicity machine for millionaires to raise more millons. The two discuss that and also Ken's early success with his TV writing partner David Isaac's on shows like MASH and Cheers. Paul gushes about one of his favorite movies, Volunteers- starring Tom Hanks, John Candy and Gedde Watanabe---- which Ken Levine wrote the screenplay. Ken talks about chasing his dream from doing by play by play by himself into a tape recorder at Dodger stadium, to the Syracuse Chiefs, to the major leagues with the Baltimore Orioles. Ken also discusses the current state of television, comedies of the past, and the future of sitcoms. Are 3 camera sitcoms going to be extinct? Ken says not so fast.
