Ga eerst maar eens een vak leren, kreeg actrice Chrisje Comvalius (74) van haar traditionele, Surinaamse ouders te horen. En ook al wist ze dat ze voor het podium was geboren, ze volgde het advies op. Nadat ze aan de kweekschool haar hoofdakte had gehaald, met de aantekening dat ze ook les mocht geven aan moeilijk opvoedbare kinderen, ging ze werken bij de schooladviesdienst. Maar in 1967 al werd ze ontdekt door regisseur Marcel van Dijk, die haar als eerste zwarte vrouw de verteller liet spelen in Brechts Moeder Courage. Faya volgde, de musical met een geheel Surinaamse cast, een eigen gezelschap, Theatergroep 13, en ook een hoofdrol in Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden. Niettemin, mentor/lerares is ze altijd gebleven. Voor zangeres/actrice Meral Polat – met wie Marcel deze week het gesprek voert – maar bovenal voor getalenteerde kinderen van kleur. Ze zegt nooit ‘je mag er zijn', nee, ‘je móet er zijn'. ‘Als je een gave hebt dan moet je die gebruiken en aan anderen laten zien. Niets mag je dan in de weg staan.'

Dans l'extrême nord du Tchad, à Faya-Largeau, les incendies de palmeraies sont un fléau pour les habitants. Très fréquents à cause de la sécheresse, le feu ravage de dizaines d'hectares de palmiers dattiers chaque année. Le palmier dattier est la principale manne économique de cette province aride du Borkou. Le détachement de la force Barkhane vient en aide aux habitants, mais les incendies se propagent trop rapidement, si bien que les cultivateurs perdent souvent toute une récolte de dattes.  Avec notre correspondante à N'Djamena Talkie-Walkie en main, le lieutenant Pierre-Alexandre, commandant de détachement de la force Barkhane, supervise ses hommes sur le terrain. Un incendie s'est déclaré dans une palmeraie proche de Faya-Largeau. 25 kilomètres de palmiers menacés par le feu. « Là, ce que je vois, c'est une fumée relativement faible et blanche, mais l'incendie de la maison tout à l'heure s'est peut-être propagé à la palmeraie, explique le commandant. Quand la palmeraie commence à prendre feu, on fait ce qu'on peut et au bout d'un moment le feu s'éteint. Nous, on n'attaque pas le feu au cœur, c'est trop dangereux, d'autant que ce sont des zones pas du tout manœuvrables. On se met autour et on limite la propagation de l'incendie. » À Faya Largeau, il n'y a pas de pompiers. La force Barkhane utilise une réserve d'eau de 3 500 litres pour tenter d'éteindre le feu. Une aide appréciée par le maire de la ville, Abakar Harendji : « Barkhane avec leurs tuyaux viennent aider la population à éteindre le feu qui n'a que des sceaux et des récipients qu'ils remplissent d'eau. » Des feux d'origine inconnue Est-ce que l'on connaît l'origine du feu ? « On craint que ce soit les enfants qui mettent le feu dans les palmeraies. Ils n'en sont pas conscients et font des bêtises. » Dans cette province, les feux de palmeraies sont fréquents. Ce mois-ci, trois incendies ont été enregistrés par les autorités. Habiba Abdalah, a vu ses palmiers partir en fumée : « Tous mes dattiers sur plusieurs hectares ont brûlé en même pas une heure ! On n'a rien pu faire ! J'avais taillé les feuilles sèches pour éviter les incendies, mais avec le vent, les flammes se sont propagées très vite. Il faut presque quatre ans pour faire pousser une palmeraie et avoir des dattes. C'était une palmeraie familiale, elle nous faisait vivre. On a tout perdu. » Pour s'en sortir, elle s'est lancée dans la transformation de dates au sein d'un groupement de femmes. La présidente, Fatime Youssouf, détaille la production. « On pile les dates avec de l'arachide et du sucre. On les vend au marché. Ici, on aime beaucoup manger ça. Mais des fois, on ne peut pas acheter la date et travailler, car avec les incendies les prix des dattes peuvent être vraiment trop cher. » Avec plus de dix mille pieds, les palmiers dattiers représentent la principale manne économique de la ville.

Au Tchad, la présence militaire française est de plus en plus contestée à Ndjamena. Des appels à manifester y sont régulièrement lancés par la coalition d'opposition Wakit Tama qui demande le départ de la force française Barkhane implantée au Tchad depuis 2014 en remplacement de l'opération Serval et Épervier. Mais à l'extrême nord du pays, à Faya-Largeau, la force française est plutôt bien accueillie par les habitants. Et pour cause, la politique française s'appuie sur deux volets : militaire et développement. Dans la région, le projet COM Nord a d'ailleurs été lancé, financé notamment par l'AFD, l'Union européenne et BMZ.  De notre envoyée spéciale à Faya-Largeau, Dans la cour de cette école de Faya Largeau, les coups de marteau ont remplacé les rires des enfants. Tas de briques dans un coin de la cour, des gravats dans l'autre, des ouvriers construisent une salle de classe. Maxime Loumia, le responsable de l'école, supervise le chantier : « On est en train de construire la salle de classe qui accueillera 30 élèves. Barkhane a financé ce projet. » Ce jour-là, au passage du convoi de la force française dans les rues de Faya-Largeau, des enfants saluent les militaires. Un peu plus loin, des adolescents lancent des insultes. Mais ici, pas de sentiment anti-Barkhane comme à Ndjamena, selon Abakar Harendji, le maire de la ville.  « À Ndjamena, souvent on voyait à la télé les Wakit Tama et autres faire cela. Nous ici, on n'a pas connu ça. Les militaires, voire même la France, coopèrent avec le Tchad et c'est une ancienne coopération. Et si les militaires sont ici, ils nous aident beaucoup. Tous ces bâtiments que vous voyez là, c'est la France, affirme le maire. Ils n'ont pas cessé de nous aider jusque-là à Faya. On ne peut pas grèver contre la France, ni contre les militaires. » « Aider à hauteur de nos moyens » À côté de lui, un habitant acquiesce. Il explique qu'à Faya-Largeau, la force Barkhane est bien vue car elle comble le vide laissé par l'État tchadien dans la province du Borkou. « Ces militaires ont gardé leurs positions. Ils ne sortent que dans le cadre d'un programme. Parfois, il y a des médecins qui les accompagnent. Ces médecins partent par exemple à Wour, à Dourkourou soigner les malades. Donc c'est une bonne chose. » Apporter de l'aide aux populations vulnérables, c'est la nouvelle stratégie adoptée par la force française, explique le capitaine Pierre-Alexandre, commandant du détachement de Faya Largeau. « C'est une mission, bien sûr militaire. On assure un soutien au profit de la force Barkhane, on apporte aussi un soutien à l'ANT, en particulier sur l'avitaillement et la sécurisation pour leurs aéronefs, détaille-t-il. Mais aussi et parfois pour la gestion et l'évacuation de blessés. Mais également des missions pour être un acteur local et pour aider à hauteur de nos moyens, ajoute le Capitaine. On ne règlera pas les problèmes, mais on apporte une contribution à Faya Largeau. » Des problèmes auxquels l'AFD, l'Union européenne et BMZ tente aussi d'apporter des solutions à travers le projet Com Nord, lancé en 2019 dans les villes de Faya-Largeau, Fada et Bardaï avec un budget de 31,5 millions d'euros.

In this episode, we hear from Greg Victory, G'04, Assistant Vice President, Student Affairs and Fannie Mitchell Executive Director, Career Center at Duke University. Greg received his master's degree in higher education from Syracuse University's School of Education. Previously, Greg served as Executive Director of the Tufts Career Center from 2016-2020, and as Executive Director of Continuing Education at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he was previously Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Director of the RISD Career Center. At Syracuse University, Greg taught in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, led the First-Year and Transfer Programs office, and served as a lead with employer engagement in the Career Center. Greg has also held positions at Colgate University and Ithaca College and taught junior high school social studies. One of Greg's favorite jobs was serving as “Scooch,” mascot for the Syracuse Mets (formerly the Syracuse Chiefs), a AAA baseball club. That position allowed him to “be as goofy as I wanted to be, to bring joy, laughter and excitement to fans,” he said. “It offers a glimpse of my spirit, energy and enthusiasm.” In his free-time he enjoys traveling, food (cooking and exploring new restaurants), and spending time with his partner, David, and puppy, Faya. “Faya dayi” is a hymnal chant recited by the Harari farmers of Ethiopia as they harvest khat, a native plant chewed for its stimulant properties. Roughly translated, faya dayi means “giving birth to wellness or health.” It is also the title of Ethiopian/Mexican filmmaker Jessica Beshir's one-of-a-kind, profoundly moving new documentary set in the magical and troubled land where she grew up. Deeply affected by the stunning beauty and originality of the film, Ken and Mike were extremely fortunate to be able to talk to Jessica at length about her tour-de-force documentary feature debut, which she shot, directed and produced over the course of a transformative ten-year personal journey. How did Jessica maintain her faith in the project for so many years and develop the sense of self-confidence that she could pull it off? What was her inspiration for embracing an aesthetic that privileges instinct and emotion over traditional narrative devices? How did she do justice to the stories of the young people who have been struggling for freedom under a series of repressive regimes?
