Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military reporter Emanuel Fabian and culture editor Jessica Steinberg join host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Fabian was in the Gaza Strip last week at the Morag Corridor. He compares this trip to previous IDF embeds and describes what he saw. We learn about the very intense fighting in the Strip and hear about the incidents in which three servicemen recently lost their lives: Master Sgt. (res.) Asaf Cafri, Cpt. Ido Voloch and Sgt. Neta Yitzhak Kahane, of the Border Police’s Yamas covert unit. For only the third time since a ceasefire in Lebanon went into effect in November 2024, the IDF carried out an attack in the Beirut area. We learn what the IDF was targeting and what this means for the ceasefire. Some 12,000 people led by Holocaust survivors and an Israeli delegation of released hostages, hostages’ family members, and bereaved families marched Thursday from Auschwitz to the Birkenau camp for the 2025 March of the Living, with the horrors of the murder of six million Jews mingling with the plight of the captives in Gaza. Steinberg was on the ground with them and reports back. To end the program, we hear about a rally staged Sunday night by the families of the “Beautiful 6,” six hostages murdered by Hamas terrorists in Gaza at the end of August last year. The six hostages killed by their captors in Gaza were Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Almog Sarusi, Or Danino and Alex Lubanov. We hear about an evening of song, prayer and calls for unity. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog for more updates. The Deeper Meaning of the Israel National Anthem

B"H As Israel's Memorial Day and Independence Day approach, we're reflecting on the powerful meaning behind Hatikvah — Israel's national anthem. The famous line “Od lo avda tikvateinu” (“Our hope is not yet lost”) is rooted in Ezekiel's vision of the dry bones — a symbol of the Jewish people's unbreakable spirit and their dream to return to their homeland. Hatikvah reminds us that true hope means trusting in God while also having the strength and perseverance to survive and rebuild. May the Jewish spirit and the light of our land continue to inspire the world. To watch Torah Thoughts in video format, click HERE Subscribe to the Torah Thoughts BLOG for exclusive written content! Sponsored by the World Zionist Organization, this lively event is hosted by Yonatan Vendriger and contains remarks by Ariel Wiss of the Israeli Ministry of Education.  It is essentially a contest amongst amateur Tanach experts (the selections are taken from both Prophets and the Writings, in addition to the Torah) who have to answer non-multiple choice questions about quotes from the Hebrew Bible.  Their erudition is stunning, and eventually a winner and a runner-up emerge and are crowned.  Also, there are several musical performances by singer Gilad Paz (accompanied by keyboardist Moshe Elmakias), including Hatikvah at the end, as well as classic Israeli hits throughout the contest (such as "Hineni Kan" by Yehoram Gaon). Shnayor Burton, a past champion and familiar face to fans of the Bible Contest, returns as a judge. The head judge is Aure Ben-Zvi Goldblum, a specialist in Biblical Hebrew. Recorded at Congregation Shearith Israel in Manhattan.

Between March 10 and May 4, 2025, American Jews will vote for their delegates to the 39th World Zionist Congress, the “parliament of the Jewish people,” which will convene in Jerusalem in October 2025. Every vote determines how money is spent, how resources are allocated, and contributes to policies in Israeli society and in Jewish communities around the globe. New Jewish Narrative proudly co-leads the Hatikvah Slate, working towards progressive change within the Jewish community here in the U.S. This discussion answered questions ranging from "what is the World Zionist Congress in the first place?" to "what is the Hatikvah platform and why should my vote go there instead of somewhere else?" In addition to our President and CEO Hadar Susskind, our panel featured Nomi Colton-Max, co-chair of NJN and Vice President for Programming of the American Zionist Movement, and Kenneth Bob, board member of NJN and chair of Rozana USA.

Israel's national anthem, “Hatikvah,” has a long and poignant history that traces back to a poem originally written by Naftali Herz Imber called “Tikvahteinu." This week, to mark the 76th anniversary of Israel's founding, the historian and author Asael Abelman joins host Jonathan Silver to investigate that history. Together, they look at the biblical sources and national aspirations of the poem, examine some of the contemporary discussion surrounding it, and take stock of some of its mysteries and paradoxes. High among those is the question of why the state of Israel's anthem is a song of longing that one day there will be such a thing as a state of Israel. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.

Transcript of Episode with Modi: Manya Brachear Pashman:   Comedian Modi Rosenfeld, known by his fans as simply Modi, is nearing the end of a live national tour, co-hosts his own podcast, and he recently released his first televised stand-up comedy special titled Know Your Audience. It's a principle the Israeli-American comedian has always subscribed to. But what happens when you know your audience is suffering a trauma like no other. Here with us to talk about how we can and why we should laugh again is Modi Rosenfeld.  Modi, welcome to People of the Pod. Modi:   Hi, People of the Pod. Manya Brachear Pashman:   You were born in Tel Aviv and grew up on Long Island. Tell us how you found your way to comedy.  Modi:   I was actually just doing investment banking. And I used to imitate the secretaries. And my friends said this is really funny, you should do it on stage. And they set up an open mic night. And that was about 30 something years ago. And that's how the comedy began. Manya Brachear Pashman:   The special that I mentioned was filmed nearly a year ago. It was filmed before the Hamas terrorist attack and the war. You talk about COVID, you talk about marrying your millennial husband, you talk about Shabbat elevators. I'm curious if you do feel like the material still resonates in the current climate?  Modi:   Ever since October 7, I've been doing my shows and not mentioning the war itself. Until the very end where I sing Hatikva with the audience. I feel like the audience needs a moment to just laugh and not think about the war. And not think about what's happening in Israel and just have a laugh about being Jewish, being Jewish, about non-Jewish people.  Sometimes I tell the story about how I was October 7, while I was in Israel. And then sing Hatikva with the audience, people seem to, they're very touched and moved by it. And it reminds them, now, let's just remember where our hearts and where our prayers and where our thoughts are. Manya Brachear Pashman:   So let's talk about where you were on October 7. Modi:   The war began at the end of the holiday of Sukkot and I was in Israel. I had six shows, sold out shows in Israel that were absolutely amazing. One of the highlights of my career. Thursday was the last show. Friday we were there for Shabbat and Saturday we were scheduled to fly out to Paris to do four shows there. And obviously Saturday morning, the alarms went off and the bombs went off.  We were staying at the Setai Hotel, which is in Yafo, the Arab part of Tel Aviv. Bruno Mars was also staying at the hotel. He had three concerts in Israel and at 12 in the afternoon we saw them whisk him away to a private airplane to be taken out of Israel.  And I said to Leo, my husband, I said Thank God they got put on Mars out of the hotel. He said why? I said because if a bomb hits this hotel and me and Bruno Mars die, I would get zero press coverage.  And so that was you know, something light in the day, but it was a very, very stressful, scary day for everybody. We were on a scheduled flight to go to Paris. And it had a four hour delay. And we finally took off and got to Paris. And then we had to make a decision. Do we do these shows? Because the war was so fresh, people were just learning about what's happening and watching it on their phones. But the sold out shows were full. And that's when I began to do Hatikvah at the end of the shows, and I've been doing it ever since. You know, we just had an hour and 20 minutes of laughter, they just had the best time. We were all laughing. And then you just focus again, you know, yeah, we're laughing. But in Israel, there's a whole different experience happening. And even though in Israel now, the comedians there are also performing and doing shows. You've got to find a respite from being in the war. Because we are, you know, everybody's on their phones, you're 24 hours in the war, receiving news and footage and all kinds of information. And then you finally get to just take a few minutes to laugh. Manya Brachear Pashman:   When you said that you were actually an investment banker, that you found comedy kind of as a career later on, but what role did humor and comedy play in your upbringing, in your family life, your childhood? Modi:   Only later on in life that I realized that my father more than all is a very funny person, just by having no editing skills. I never was a class clown. I was always funny with friends, but you know, when you're a table comic, and you're a real comic it's two different things.  If you can be funny with your friends at a table, you know your audience, you know everybody at the table, you know what they've gone through, you know what we all know that they went through. And so it's easier to get a joke out. When you're on stage, you don't know everybody, and you don't know what they've all been through, or how they know each other.  Manya Brachear Pashman:   So how do you kind of unite your audience? How do you try to kind of find that common denominator? Modi:  People are kind of seeing the Jewish world through my eyes, through the eyes of a Jewish person. And they learn things, even though sometimes it gets a little specific, I always translate. My goal in comedy is to make people happy, is to bring laughter into the world, which I call Moshiach Energy. When you're standing in front of an audience of 500 to 1500 to 2000 people and you see them all laughing together. For me, that's Moshiach Energy.  How I pictured the world would be when Moshiach is here. You know, the Messianic era, just people just happy, united, laughing, not arguing. And even though you can create that for an hour and a half, you wish you could create it for 24/7. Manya Brachear Pashman:   So how else have you adjusted your live shows to reflect the current situation in addition to adding the anthem? Do you talk about antisemitism?  Modi:   I was always talking about antisemitism, not as a lecture, not as a type of Noa Tishby, but more as a comedian. Here's what's happening, here's how it's funny. You're bringing light to it, but you're bringing it with punch lines that are appropriate. And this was before the war, it's in my special, it's before the war.  I don't know if you remember there was a politician in Turkey that stood up and screamed that Allah was going to kill all the Jews and destroy Israel. And then he drops, has a heart attack. I mean, the jokes sometimes just write themselves.  Manya Brachear Pashman:   A few weeks ago, we spoke with musician Matisyahu, who also has been on a national tour. He has encountered protests at most of his concerts, actually. And some concerts have even been canceled because of security concerns. Have you encountered any of that? Modi:   In general to answer that, I would say not in the form he's had. We've had a lot of security at our shows, especially the European shows. Since the war I've performed in Berlin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Vienna, Brussels, Amsterdam. I call it the Reparations Tour.  And we've had an enormous amount of security both from hired security and local police and guards from the city. Our last show in Paris, we had four shows in Paris, the fourth one, the police asked us to cancel because there was a huge pro-Palestinian riot across the street.  And the reason I stay riot and not protest is because it was unauthorized, and they were out of control. They had tear gas thrown in there. And that was one of the incidences. In Brussels there was a mixup in people knowing that the security would be there. So we lost about 100 people that were going to come to the show. So the show went from 900 people to 800 people. That's the worst that's happened. Manya Brachear Pashman:   And did you indeed cancel that fourth Paris show because of the riot? Modi:   The Paris police were so wonderful with providing security for all the other three shows, when they asked us to cancel that show, we listened to them, and we did it. And we actually moved it to the following day to a matinee.  But they said this is not going to be a good idea for this insane amount of, that kind of protest to be–it was catty corner across from where our theater was.  It was the Republic Square, which our theater was at the Apollo, which was you can see it. And so they said it's not a good idea to have Jews walking into a theater at that moment. Manya Brachear Pashman:   Makes sense. Was it a coincidence that it was that it was located there? Or was it connected to your show in any way? Modi:   No, no, no–the Republic Square is, I guess, an iconic place to do something like that. My theater happened to have been across the street from it. This was the Thursday after the Saturday, which was less than a week. Our first show in Paris was on Monday after the Saturday of the beginning of the war. So you couldn't understand how fresh this was.  All the news was coming in. Everybody was finding out exactly what was going on. We didn't have all the information, we had no idea about people that were locked in bomb shelters and people that were missing, they had no idea if they were killed or kidnapped and then just doing comedy there you know, literally I'm in the back of the theater looking at people watching their phones, trying to get information on what's happening on the war and then the lights go down and the comedy starts. Manya Brachear Pashman:   How have you been affected by the war? Modi:   We have family in Israel that are affected by just being in Israel and the change in their lifestyles that happened. Directly, we have family that their their kids are in Gaza. Ellie Beer from United Hatzalah is a close friend of mine, his son is fighting in Gaza. So when I speak to Ellie, I'm like, how's your kid doing?  When you're in Israel, you speak to people, it's like one degree of separation between you and anybody that's truly affected by the war.  When we did the 100th episode of my podcast at the 92nd Street Y, my podcast, which is called And Here's Modi. I'm so used to performing at fundraisers and charities where they show a movie of something horrible, and then they bring me out, and they go, and here's Modi:. And here I am the Monday after the war, doing a show.  We did a Q&A with the audiences, a pre Q&A, sent questions in, and everybody kept asking who would you want as a guest on the podcast and I said, Omer Shem Tov, which is one of the hostages. His photo for some reason I see it everywhere. And I wish he could be in front of me at the podcast and not in a tunnel somewhere being held hostage. I truly go to bed every night thinking I'm gonna wake up. When I open my phone up, it's gonna say today, all hostages were released, ceasefire has begun. And there will be an end to this soon. Manya Brachear Pashman:   I think that that is what we all pray for, and hope to wake up to every morning. I'm curious if you've returned to Israel since October 7, I know you've been on tour, traveling a lot, but have you had a chance? Modi:   I have been in every Jewish community from California to Florida to New York to Chicago to everywhere, with the tour. And again, it's, I think, for me, that's more important than being in Israel, because I'm connecting with these communities who are not in Israel, and bringing them a little bit of unity.  The community gets together, you see people –for some reason, all our shows are starting a little late, everybody just sees each other in the lobby and like, Hi, how are you? Good to see you. And then they come into the show.  I think that's more important for me to be doing that than running around Israel, saying how ridiculous this war is. Everybody's doing what they can do. And I'll be in Israel in June, and I'll be doing a show in Yerushalayim, and then I'll be back there in September doing a larger show in Tel Aviv and doing whatever I can do to help there. Manya Brachear Pashman:   You often interact with audience members in your show. Have you had any interesting encounters with individuals in your audience? Especially since October 7? Modi:   I'm not one of those comics who does the where are you from, what do you do and make a whole hour about trying to get something funny out of that. That's totally not my style. I do ask if anybody's not Jewish and this way I know–if you see my comedy special you see there's an extra layer of the joke. Me translating it to the person who's not Jewish.  I will tell you in that aspect, beautiful things have happened. People who are let's say in an intermarriage or even converted to Judaism come up to me afterwards and say, Wow, I never felt so welcomed and accepted and feel a part of the tribe and they tell me their story about how they ended up in the Jewish world. Like my husband, who was born Catholic. And now he is coordinating with your organization, with every other UJA, JJJ, JJC, JJABC, JABC JJBC. You know, and he is on the phone speaking to people about a motzei shabbos show, a pre-shabbos show, after yuntif, before yuntif.  He's coordinating with the Jewish world to make sure that they're laughing. And it's an amazing– that's one of the nicest things that I've been seeing. People who ended up in the Jewish community that weren't Jewish, feel so welcome from the show. Manya Brachear Pashman:   What makes you proud to be Jewish, Modi? Modi:   What makes me proud to be Jewish is, I just think that the contribution of Jews to the world is significantly larger than the size of the people that we are. And I talk about that now in the new part of my show, you know, how just everywhere you go, whether something to do with medicine, education, culture, there's always a Jewish name on the building. A part of being Jewish is not only helping the Jews in the community, it's helping the community. So not just creating something–the Lubavitcher Rebbe always spoke about that, whatever you are in the community, don't just help the Jews there, help the community in general.  And you see that, you know. You go to any hospital, any museum, and you just see the Goldberg Pavilion, you see the Horowitz Wing, and they just give and help create all of that. In comparison to the size that we are in the world, we do a lot more. And something, that makes me proud. Manya Brachear Pashman:   I think that you're absolutely right. And I think that your contribution of comedy and humor, and laughter, especially at a time like this is really so appreciated. Modi:   You can bring humor into the world by, I always say: be the friend that brings their friends to the comedy show. If you see me coming to a theater near you, another comedian, coming to a theater, buy a few tickets. By the time the comic gets there, you'll see how all your friends are looking for tickets, and they're gonna want to have a good night of laughter.  And now you can just make a night at your house, you can put my special on the TV and have a bunch of friends watching and make an evening of it, and make sure to send it and make sure that people who can't get to a show like the elderly and your parents, grandparents that don't have a way to get to a show or don't know how to set up Amazon or go to my website, help them, sit with them. Watch the comedy show with them. That's Moshiach energy. Manya Brachear Pashman:   Well, thank you so much, Modi. Modi:   Thank you. Manya Brachear Pashman:   Last week, we re-aired excerpts from our award-winning series Remembering Pittsburgh, which marked five years since the 2018 shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue.  Next week, one of the guests in that series returns. Marnie Fienberg founded 2ForSeder, an initiative to honor her mother-in-law Joyce who was one of the 11 victims murdered inside Tree of Life.  Ahead of Passover, Marnie will share how inviting newcomers to our Seder table can be a powerful way to push back against antisemitism.

Is the October 7 massacre and subsequent war a punishment for building the Golden Calf? How could the people transgress such a grave sin of idolatry just 39 days after the greatest revelation at Sinai? Why not support a Palestinian state? Why not deport the Arabs and Muslims from Israel? What should be our attitude to Zionism and to displaying the Israeli flag and singing HaTikvah? Can you be a Zionist without displaying the Israeli flag and singing its anthem? Should we allow these displays in our organizations? Should we not participate in events that have these displays?

pWotD Episode 2423: Leonard Bernstein Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 174,884 views on Wednesday, 20 December 2023 our article of the day is Leonard Bernstein.Leonard Bernstein ( BURN-styne; August 25, 1918 – October 14, 1990) was an American conductor, composer, pianist, music educator, author, and humanitarian. Considered to be one of the most important conductors of his time, he was the first American-born conductor to receive international acclaim. Bernstein was "one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history" according to music critic Donal Henahan. Bernstein received numerous honors and accolades including seven Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards, and 16 Grammy Awards (including the Lifetime Achievement Award) as well as an Academy Award nomination. He received the Kennedy Center Honor in 1981. As a composer, Bernstein wrote in many genres, including symphonic and orchestral music, ballet, film and theatre music, choral works, opera, chamber music, and pieces for the piano. His best-known work is the Broadway musical West Side Story, which continues to be regularly performed worldwide, and has been adapted into two (1961 and 2021) feature films. Bernstein's works include three symphonies, Serenade after Plato's "Symposium" (1954), and Chichester Psalms (1965), the original score for the Elia Kazan drama film On the Waterfront (1954), and theater works including On the Town (1944), Wonderful Town (1953), Candide (1956), and his Mass (1971).Bernstein was the first American-born conductor to lead a major American symphony orchestra. He was music director of the New York Philharmonic and conducted the world's major orchestras, generating a significant legacy of audio and video recordings. Bernstein was also a critical figure in the modern revival of the music of Gustav Mahler, in whose music he was most passionately interested. A skilled pianist, Bernstein often conducted piano concertos from the keyboard. He was the first conductor to share and explore classical music on television with a mass audience through dozens of national and international broadcasts, including Young People's Concerts with the New York Philharmonic. A lifelong humanitarian, Bernstein worked in support of civil rights, protested against the Vietnam War, advocated nuclear disarmament, raised money for HIV/AIDS research and awareness, and engaged in multiple international initiatives for human rights and world peace. He conducted Mahler's Resurrection Symphony to mark the death of president John F. Kennedy, and in Israel at a world famous concert, Hatikvah on Mt. Scopus, after the Six-Day War. The sequence of events was preserved for posterity in a documentary entitled Journey to Jerusalem. At the end of his life, Bernstein conducted a historic performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in Berlin to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:04 UTC on Thursday, 21 December 2023.For the full current version of the article, see Leonard Bernstein on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Kendra Standard.

Uri Ashi was one of the only people advocating for peace for the last couple of years. For over two years, he stood holding a sign with big letters saying, "Peace with the Palestinians is doable."  Even though he works in the High-Tech scene, Uri has dedicated his last years to research, writing, and advocating for the two-state solution.  His book Hatikvah (Just like Israel's National Anthem) covers the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and offers a solution. I reached out to Uri to see if he thinks we can still achieve Peace amid the Black Sabbath of October 7th.  To check Uri's website (Hebrew) - https://hatikvah.co.il/#book #Peace #Israel #HaTikvah

From the service on Saturday evening, October 28, 2023 at the Restoration Church in Santa Clarita, CA. Rabbi Gary's prayers for Israel:Pray for the MilitaryPray for the HostagesPray for the CiviliansPray for JerusalemWatch complete service on YouTube: https://youtu.be/4jMMRlYLDAI We devoted our time to worship and prayer for Israel. 140 were in attendance and it may have been the most important service we conducted all year. The worship was God centered; everyone was focused on interceding for Israel and the Jewish people. and the videos were moving and inspiring. I invite you to not only view the service, but to use it as a means to continue to lift up your voices in prayer to our God and King in light of all that is developing in Israel and the Middle East. Psalm 25:3 "No one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame, but they will be put to shame who are treacherous without excuse." Psalm 33:18-19 "But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive..." Psalm 42:5, 11 "Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God." Psalm 62:5, 8 "Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken...Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge." Psalm 146:5 "Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God." Psalm 147:11 "The Lord takes delight in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love." Romans 15:13 "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Titus 2:13-14 "...we wait for the blessed hope, that is, the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Yeshua the Messiah, who gave himself for us..." Let us not lose hope, and let us not grow weary in praying for the rescue of the hostages, comfort for the sufferers, victory for Israel, protection for Jewish people in the face of worldwide anti-Semitism, and the elimination of the perpetrators of evil and wickedness. Continue to pray that: * The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Reservists destroy Hamas, and are victorious against all her enemies; * The hostages are safe and will be rescued, and that their family members are strengthened and comforted; * Civilians in Israel and that innocent civilians in Gaza are safe, and those who have be wounded would recover; * Gaza would be free of Hamas and that Palestinians there would be liberated and restored to their homes; * President Biden and his administration would remain supportive of Israel, and that our troops would be safe; * Jewish people around the world would be safe and secure; * And finally, that Messiah Yeshua would soon return and establish his kingdom.

Jonny Gould's Jewish State

This is my second sit-down interview with Trevor Horn and you'll hear why it's nothing like the first time. The previous one (episode 43) made an impression with Wikipedia's editors, who included Trevor's “I believe in Judaism, more than I believe in anything else” as a reference. On leaving last time, Trevor told me at the door, "no one ever asked me about that before". In this in-depth conversation about his life and career, Trevor talks about growing up as a post-war baby boomer in Hetton-le-Hole and how the family left the Durham village to secure their future in the more prosperous midlands (as my own family had done a generation before). We discuss Paul McCartney's constant reinvention as the key to longevity and his own determination to keep working. Then there's Rod and the magnificent orchestral album, his most recent production. Trevor also pays a touching tribute to his late wife, Jill Sinclair, “the first person who told me I was good. There's also a couple of Jewish jokes she used to tell him too. And we expand on his religious beliefs, how Shabbat is a “great idea” and reading the Torah illuminating. Trevor's been touring the US as Seal's musical director with support band, The Buggles, reuniting with his old friend, Geoff Downes. It was their number one hit, “Video Killed The Radio Star” which propelled him to fame before he became a producer on Jill's recommendation. There's a stem-by-stem analysis of the brilliant “whiz bang” noises of Owner of a Lonely Heart, The Art of Noise, ABC's band manifesto, the Belfast Child of The Simple Minds and why Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to Hollywood sounds like the Hatikvah, Israel's national anthem! I had another hour of questions for Trevor, but I hope this gives you a snapshot of what a talented and modest man he is, and why I've been a fan since my teenage years. Dear Listener, this is Trevor Horn II. Jonny Gould's Jewish State is brought to you with Dangoor Education.

When I was in Jerusalem last week sitting shiva for our father, after folks gave their condolences and shared their memories, they would ask me for my take on Israel. The conversation was sobering, making me feel naïve and disconnected from the real Israel that is. Me: In Greater Jewish Boston, we are so excited to be marking Israel at 75. A big contingent from our shul is going to celebrate Israel at 75! A big contingent from the whole Boston Jewish community is going to mark this joyful and incredible milestone! How are you thinking about Israel at 75? Comforters: One of two responses. The less common: “Not on our radar screen at all. We've given it no thought till you just mentioned it.” By far the more common: “I hope we get there. Not clear that we will make it to 75 as one country.” In the shiva house, I had the sinking feeling that there was not one death I was mourning, but two. Something has died in Israel beyond our father – a belief of Israelis in a bright future for Israel. Nothing makes that clearer than two titles of Danny Gordis. When he and his family made Aliyah in the 90s, during Oslo, his first book about Israel was called If a Land Can Make You Cry. The title evoked the pathos, the emotion, the ups and downs, the resilience, but the fundamental hopefulness of a nation whose national anthem is Hatikvah. That title seems long gone. The new title, from his piece this week: Drowning in a Sea of Resentment and Hate, It's Far from Clear that Israel Can Make it Back to Shore. This piece details how numerous tribes within Israel—settlers, Haredis, Israeli Arabs, Palestinian Israelis, Ashkenazi, Mizrachi—feel betrayed (his word) by the state. One can sense this hate in the friction over dedicated war hero pilots who are protesting the erosion of Israeli democracy being called a “pathetic bunch of deserters” by the ruling coalition. What do we do about it? This week Thomas Friedman offered us another sobering essay with a sobering title: “American Jews, You Have to Choose Sides on Israel.” He quotes Rabbi Sharon Brous who speaks of rabbis giving Death by Israel sermons. Is he right? Is our response to this moment to see it as a political fork in the road, and we have to choose, and bear the consequences of our choice? Is there another way to frame and respond to this moment? How does our weekly Torah portion (uncannily, it involves a civil war, a milchemet achim, in the wake of the sin of the golden calf) help us frame this sad and sober moment in the history of Israel? How can we help? Can we take a principled stand in favor of democracy and against Israel becoming an authoritarian regime without checks and balances without adding to the division of this moment?

The death of Jesus on the cross told us that people are more important than things to God. While many people are looking for proof that there is a God, they forget that He is Love, meaning that He is intensely relational. Understanding God's relational nature is why His relational skills are never more on display than with His people Israel. Indeed, the Bible is full of Israel's failures but never once the neglect of God.  In Luke 21, Jesus told His disciples that Israel would be disciplined, and they would be taken captive and dispersed around the world until one day Jerusalem would no longer be "trampled down by the Gentiles." Today, we will continue with the teaching of Paul that Biblical Love is about "all hope." Indeed, with Paul's brief statement that Yehovah's Love is the idea of "all hope," his readers were learning to understand that Yehovah is Love through his promise of a final resurrection day, in Hebrew: techiyat hamatim. In today's program, I will briefly bring up the matter of what is called "the rapture," speaking about it from within the context of our resurrection hope. The term "hope" descends in meaning from the Hebrew word "Tikvah" (consider the Israeli national anthem HaTikvah) coming from the Hebrew letters Quf Vav Heh. It means to wait expectantly on Yehovah for him to act on His promise. Presently, we are still waiting on Yehovah to finish the two-part Messianic redemption story that he began. As a result, part 1 of His redemption story gives us a new soul through Yeshua's Third Day resurrection. Part 2 of his redemption story gives us a new body through our Seventh Day resurrection through Yeshua. Nonetheless, the question remains: who qualifies to participate in that special Seventh-Day resurrection event? As I understand things, the biblical answer is not complicated. Those who continue to wait for the coming of Messiah and those who continue to expect that the final resurrection will happen are the ones who will participate in the final Last Day resurrection. We will learn some lessons from the following narratives to help us better understand the ideas.        1) Joshua 2:18-21 with Isaiah 1:18-20. Accordingly, this is about Rachav (Rahab) and the Hebrew spies when they came to Rahav in the city of Jericho. Given salvation was conditional to her and her entire family just before the violent crash of the walls of Jericho.         2) Jeremiah 17:13 with John 8:2-11. Accordingly, this is teaching that Yehovah is the Mikveh of Israel (purification waters of Messianic hope). Yeshua expressed The Truth with the story of a woman brought for judgment due to some alleged adultery. Join us for today's podcast on Defining Biblical Love, Episode 89 and PART 25 on 1 Corinthians 13:7.Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/biz/fund?id=23WBKCMBHKDT8/Ancient Roads: Real Israel Talk Radio)

Endless amounts of stories from the Tokyo Games! John and Chad are here to highlight several of the most significant stories to come out of the Summer Olympics, and why they matter culturally. With plenty of sarcasm and laughs along the way, stay tuned for John's important promise at the end of the pod. This week, we discuss: 3:02 — Should adults wear jerseys with player names and numbers on them? 5:21 — An update on the Simone Biles story, including her stunning return to win bronze on the beam. 10:49 — The shocking story of an Olympic athlete fleeing her home nation. 15:33 — A brief medal recap, including some blatant Israeli patriotism on John's part. 19:50 — A wild week of disappointment—and headlines—for Novak Djokovic 23:27 — Laurel Hubbard's Olympic failures complicate the debate around transgender athletes 27:44 — The Norway handball team was fined for WHAT?!? Welcome to Showcasing House Music DJ Mixes by dattrax!! Hello Fellow House Music Fanatics and Newcomers, welcome!! We are now also available in the Google Play Store's new podcast section, and are still in the iTunes podcast section. For both, just type in the search box, 'house music by dattrax' » you'll have access to almost 100 free house mixes whether you're on Android or iOS. BOOM! It's been the longest dry spell we've every had this past year for putting up our house mixes. Our apologies, however, we have not slowed down in buying more house tracks. We're junkies!! We've bought over 200 tracks in 5 separate batches from Traxsource and Beatport since the last mix was posted on our site. Been working on two mixes, which we believe you're going to LOVE. This mix, "Ritual Healing" has gone through probably at least eight versions >> each one had some parts that were really amazing and other parts that just sucked! It has been very frustrating, but accepted as part of our ritual of growing in love with new house tracks and only having a few hours a week these days. Most weekends, we listen to about 500+ tracks on Traxsource & Beatport in the late AMs. Jim, my best friend, DJ partner and fellow house fiend takes on tracks on Beatport and I take on Traxsource. So after about 2,000-2,500 tracks, I usually have about 90-130 tracks total in my virtual crate. Then over a few weekends, I'll dwindle that down to 30-40, then try to find a 15-20% discount code or sit on the crate till Traxsource emails a discount. Then buy, then listen to the tracks in traffic to and from my day job in Digital Marketing at a downtown Toronto agency. Then make a mix on a Sat. morning, shaking the whole house for hours (it's fantastic!!), and then listen to it for a few days. If it sucks, then it gets deleted and back to the drawing board we go the next Sat. It's such a healing ritual because I usually take all my life and work stress and pour it into each mix. In the process, hopefully putting mostly negative energy with some positive and transforming it into something beautiful. Sharing my favourite house tracks in the way that I want them to sound if I was dancing my ass off at a crystal clear and loud club sound system!! Eclectic journey through the jungles of the electronic music in his collection that is being gathered since 1996. Electronic music was his passion since late 80-s when his favorite artists were Brian Eno, Harold Bud, Can, Joy Division, Einstürzende Neubauten et cetera. Bvoice began experimenting with decks in 1996 when the very young Russian techno-scene was still mostly underground. The first gigs and recognition came while he was dj-ing in some of the first places where you could listen to electronic music in Russia. As Bvoice dj skills matured he took the other step in developing his musical talents. So, in 2002 he founded project called Midiots (Dumb Unit, Treibstoff Rec). Native Instruments “Traktor 2” took their track for the demo skills of the program. In 2005 together with Egor “Khz”, Bvoice started the project Bvoice & Khz (Time Has Changed, Dumb Unit, Airdrop etc). Style of their music has a very broad spectrum from contemporary deep-house to basement dub-techno. Later the project Bvoice & Anrilov has started (also with Alex Danilov like B.A.D project). The support of their first EP was pretty huge: Loco Dice, Mandy, Marc Antona and many more. Then the collaboration time has come. Here I sit at my computer thinking about Episode 43 of HatRadio! with my guest, Jeff Budd......a really important show! What to write? How to approach it? After all Jeff went through, as a kid, the stuff we fear the most - sexual abuse from a teacher. So, I'm mulling this over and thinking, ya he did, and we talked a lot about that time in his life, but you know what, like he told me, he doesn't let that define him as a person. And I love that about Jeff because he means it, and you can just see he's worked arduously to make that a reality. So ladies and gent, let me introduce to you Jeff Budd, a beautiful person who speaks candidly about pretty much mostly everything including: coaching hockey in Israel and working with hockey's greatest coach ever, Roger Nielson; standing proudly when Hatikvah, Israel's National anthem was played in Belgrade after his team's victory; working with children in Kitchener ensuring their environment is safe and loving....and a lot more. And folks, meet my dear friend Jeff Budd who is from my hometown, Kitchener and who adored my parents, his Rabbi and Rebbetzin who were his mentors and teachers. Today Jeff is a stalwart leader in the synagogue responsible for many things including taking care of families who have lost a loved one, and participating in the Jewish rituals required to prepare a body for burial. That's Jeff Budd!!! And yes listeners, Jeff's grade 5 teacher sexually abused him. At 35 Jeff had him arrested and the judge, "a poster child for judicial malpractice" let the guy off for a damn stupid reason. Of course, this time is crucial in Jeff's life, and he speaks openly and at length to describe the tribulations he went through, how his parents and family saved his life, but he's says with confidence: this time in his life does not define him, at least not in whole.  I loved this schmooze with Jeff, and I did because he's a marvelous story teller who laughs a lot (as I do) and he can take and give a joke. I loved this talk we shared because it's clear Jeff appreciates life in only a way people do who have gone through great heartship and then later on dance to the music life plays for us.  When the interview was done I thought about splendor in our world in the guise of a  human being, a guy who lives a quiet life today in Southern Ontario, who rose up from the stomped flora of a toxic garden to blossom into the most splendid of flowers one could imagine, standing tall, proud, handsome and inspirational. Thanks Jeff and God bless you always. This Budds for you!  HatRadio! It's the show that schmoozes. Please subscribe at hatradio.ca/subscribe . Thank you. Let’s face it – when it comes to Israel, everything is complicated. Politics are complicated, religion is complicated, democracy is complicated, the conflict is complicated. Even our complications are complicated. These are the things that take us out to the street. That make us shout, and cry. That fill us with hope, and – just as often – plunge us into utter despair. But there is (seemingly) one island within Israeli society that escapes complexity, and brings us together more than it divides us: Israeli music. Or so, at least, we thought. In this special mini-series, we set out to explore Israeli society – warts, rifts and fuzzy togetherness alike – through the stories of some of the country’s most iconic tunes. The original music in this mini-series was composed, arranged and performed by the Mixtape Band, led by Ari Wenig and Dotan Moshanov, together with Ruth Danon, Eden Djamchid and Ronnie Wagner-Schmidt. The final song is a 1950s Tunisian rendition of HaTikvah sung by M. Cohen. The episode was recorded by Russell Castiglione and Josh Piel at the Dubway Studios in New York, and mixed by Sela Waisblum. It is based on Israel Story’s latest live show tour, “Mixtape.” Stay connected with us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and by signing up for our newsletter at israelstory.org/newsletter/. On today's episode, host Marcela Sulak reads the poetry of Yudit Shahar. Born and raised in the HaTikvah neighborhood of Tel Aviv, she is a special education teacher and mother of two children. She is best known for her concern with economic justice and now lives in Petach Tikvah, Israel.  Here is an excerpt from her poem "Brightness": "In the house which was really a shack, in the laundry room, on my fingertips, the sourish smell of work clothes as I look in your pocket for sweet dates that have been forgotten. Brightness, you wanted, and you used to raise the antenna the highest in the neighborhood so it could catch disappearing broadcasts from the expanse of the Mediterranean, as far as Izmir and Istanbul." Hello Fellow House Music Fanatics and Newcomers, welcome!! We are now also available in the Google Play Store's new podcast section, and are still in the iTunes podcast section. For both, just type in the search box, 'house music by dattrax' >> you'll have access to almost 100 free house mixes whether you're on Android or iOS. Much love and respect for the following house vocalists and producers. You can buy all their tracks on Traxsource.com. Message us for the playlist for this house mix if you are really interested: Allies For Everyone, Howling, Hatikvah, MoodWarp, Quintin Christian, Vandermeer, &Me, Damian Lazarus, The Ancient Moons, Larse, Sue Avenue, Larse, Noir, Blaze, Palmer Brown, Solomun, Luca C & Brigante, Roisin Murphy, Luca C, Brigante, Joris Voorn, Matthew Dear, Ost & Kjex, Luka, Mz Jay, At One, Saccao, Moe Turk, Stimming, Martin Buttrich, Mathew Jonson, Laurent Leroy, Hyenah, Denis Horvat, Monique Bingham, Black Coffee, Cubicolor, Moosefly, Iain Howie, Brett Gould, Evans, Shawni, Timo Maas & James Teej, Robosonic, Jeru The Damaja, Rhemi, Hanlei, Lydia Rhodes, Andre Lodemann, Nonku, Dubfire, Hot Since 82, Habischman, Soul Button, Stee Downes, Dahu, Abicah Soul, DJ Spen, Ovijay, Gosha, Dessy Slavova, Anton Ishutin and Pete Oak Please comment here, share with your friends who love house and reach out to us: http://www.torontodj.biz We love hearing from you. Allison, Don, and Noah discuss three topics of incomparable importance, and end with an anecdote about something in Israel that made them smile this week. Israel and the "A Word" Haaretz columnist and mensch Bradley Burston wrote an essay entitled “It’s Time to Admit it. Israeli Policy is What it Is: Apartheid.” It went viral. We ask if it makes sense – factually and politically – to use the "A word" to describe Israel. The wages of politicization The newly more-politicized “Judicial Appointment Committee” met this week, and Likud MK Nurit Koren proposed advancing a judge because she is a woman of Yeminite descent, like Koren herself. We ask if Koren was really that off base. The Way Home (Road Trip!) Social protest leader Daphni Leef and singer-songwriter Yael Deckelbaum are planning to load up a van with all manner of shit and travel cross country for a month, listening to people describe their vision for the country. Is Dafni and Yael’s fantabulous journey a political act of meaning?   All songs by the Bob Marley-loving Hatikvah 6: Od Pa’am Pa’amHachi YisraeliKol Yom MihadashMa She-Yehiyeh, Yehiyeh

Banjo Hangout Newest 100 Classical Songs

a Mantovana is a sixteenth century song composed by the Italian tenor Giuseppe Cenci, also known as Giuseppino del Biado, (d. 1616). Its earliest known appearance in print is in del Biado's 1600 collection of madrigals. The melody, later also known as "Ballo di Mantova" or "Aria di Mantova" gained wide currency in Renaissance Europe, being recorded variously as the Scottish “My mistress is prettie,” the Polish “Pod Krakowem,” Spanish "Virgen de la Cueva" and the Ukrainian “Kateryna Kucheryava." It is best-known as the melody of Bedřich Smetana's The Moldau and of the Israeli national anthem Hatikvah. I added the third part, in case old Giuseppe lifted the original riff from a raga, which I - of course - suspect:)
