We then dig into the art and gameplay of Goblin Vaults.Follow Thunderworks Games at: Website - FB - IG - Twitter—Dance Dungeon: Water tubes line massive mirrored walls to power the water wheel torture machine. This device has a lever that goes from “little jig” to “dance machine.” Tethers connect goblins to the machine and Lockwork Goblin.Lockwork Goblin: A colossal goblin-shaped golem, made of thousands of locks of all types, has exterior ledges and steps to climb it if you're agile enough. It's lonely and wants friends, so it violently brainwashes goblins with the machine to be its pal and perform dance numbers. In the center of its torso is a prison cell containing goblins pleading for you to save them. Its forehead contains a vault door that leads to emotional baggage and gold. It has hundreds of scraggly teeth that are one-use magic keys that'll open any lock. Dance Goblins: Converted goblins wear red thriller jackets, a lock necklace and are tethered by the head to the Lockwork Goblin. The tether is like an addiction, with strong withdrawals when detached. John Brieger is a board game developer based in Sunnyvale, CA with a background in qualitative research. His recent clients and licensees include Tasty Minstrel Games, Indie Boards and Cards, Deepwater Games, Thunderworks Games, and many more. He also writes the board game advice column #PlaytestingTipOfTheDay on Twitter. John and I talk about how we met, and what I consider to be our defining moment as friends during college. We then go into John's 10 goals in 10 years. When he was 20 years old, he set himself ten goals to complete by the time he is 30 years old. He talks about his progress so far, how he measures progress, and whether he will be able to complete each one. Within this conversation, we also discuss his life developing board games, managing a studio, the importance of user feedback, and managing an everchanging schedule. John gives us some insight on the world of board game development, the culture within the industry, the changes due to the pandemic, and the differences between this industry and his past in tech. We then jump into how Kickstarter has aided board game development by giving power to the consumers along with providing exposure to smaller game development companies. Whenever the Kickstarter Roundup crew gets together, we always have more games to talk about than we can manage in one episode. So, Liz from Beyond Solitaire, Jeremy from Jambalaya Plays Games, and Jason have four more games for your listening pleasure. We begin by leaning in to the roll and write craze that's hitting our hobby. Jeremy shares about Cartographers (2:20), the new one from Thunderworks Games which adds spacial and mapping elements to the formula. Then, the entire crew gushes about Fleet: The Dice Game (10:47), one of the most complex and combo-licious roll and write games on the market today. For our last two games, we get into some much more niche and out-of-left-field offerings. Liz tells us about Wars of Marcus Aurelius (21:35), a tower defense-style wargame with strong historical flavor for a Latin fangirl like Liz to enjoy. In episode 9 Tom mentions it’s time for another round of lunchtime gaming at work and asks whether there are any new games he should try out for such an occasion. Myron and Anna have two new games that might just do the trick. Roll Player by Thunderworks Games is a fascinating combination of cards and dice where you get to build a character and try to score the most victory points. Even if you don’t win the game you may just wind up with a character you want to use for your next D&D campaign. Both agree the game is a worthwhile add for any tabletop gamer who also loves D&D. Meanwhile, The Climbers by Capstone Games is a 3D building block game where your goal is to build a tower and climb to the highest point. There are lots of opportunities for cooperation and heartbreak along the way. Anna describes the game as spatial reasoning Jenga, but both agree it was fun and challenging. JT makes a stop in Tom’s Coaching Corner to ask questions about Galaxy of Heroes and effective strategies for accumulating raid tokens. And finally the crew wraps by discussing their latest gaming session which included another round of D&D and some Dominion online. A follower on twitter, Lyle Freijo, tagged both ENGN and Thunderworks Games and equested a preview series for their latest game, Lockup. Keith Matejka and Jason quickly emailed one another and made it happen the same night. Ask and you shall receive! Keith chats about the genesis of the new game Lockup, a worker placement game with a healthy dose of suspicion and mischief at the table. Keith focuses especially on the pain-staking process of playtesting and producing the most polished product they could provide.
