On this episode, Nick speaks with Susanna Weygandt a scholar studying performance theories of Russian and East European theater. She discusses the work of Anatoly Vasiliev, famed Russian theater director for the Moscow School of Dramatic Arts. Thanks for listening! ABOUT THE GUEST: Elena Susanna Weygandt analyzes and documents performance theories indigenous to Russia and East Europe that have not yet been documented. She draws on methods of interview and ethnography as well as digital display in her research on contemporary topics. In her soon-to-be published book with the University of Wisconsin Press, From Metaphor to Direct Speech: Drama and Performance Theory in Contemporary Russia, she identifies the main writers and performance theories of the vibrant movement, Novaia Drama, and situates this pioneering literature in the contemporary Russian literary canon, the Performance Studies field, and within Post-Soviet studies. The New Dramatists assert that it is precisely in the theatre, with its inherent form of critique and reflection provided by the stage, where the contemporary moment of the present can be held at arm's length away, which creates enough of a distance from the present for a historical perspective about it to emerge. This research has shaped her into a scholar and teacher of visual language, the body, feminist art, gender, exhibition on digital platforms, and all genres of documentary and realism in Russian and East European literature. Her publications on these topics of cultural history in Russia and East Europe from 1953 to the present appear in The Russian Review, Studies in Russian and Soviet Cinema, TDR: The Drama Review, Apparatus: Film, Media, and Digital Cultures in Central and Eastern Europe, and in a co-edited anthology published by Columbia UP. She received her training in Slavic Languages and Literatures from Princeton (PhD 2015; Graduate Certificate in History of Science 2015). At Sewanee: The University of the South she teaches all levels of Russian in the Russian Department and her joint affiliation in the Humanities Program. https://new.sewanee.edu/programs-of-study/russian/faculty-staff/susanna-weygandt/ If you have questions, comments, or would like to be a guest on the show, please email slavxradio@utexas.edu and we will be in touch! Pavel Golubev gave a lecture on, “Queer(ing) Art of the Russian Empire, Soviet Union, and Emigration, 1890s—1940s” on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at 4:00 pm in 206 Ingraham Hall, 1155 Observatory Drive. About the Lecture: The Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia invites you to a lecture about the queer imagery in the art of Russia, and its colonies from the late Imperial period to the early Soviet era. The talk will explore the evolution of the homosexual narrative in Russian art through the lens of gender and sexuality studies. It details how artists navigated the complex interplay of societal norms, personal identification, and creative expression and how the shifts in political and cultural landscapes influenced the representation and perception of themes and subjects in art referring to same-sex love, desire, and sexual identity from the late 19th century to the 1930s. The focus of the lecture stands on key artistic movements and notable figures whose work challenged conventional norms during a time of significant sociopolitical upheaval, such as Konstantin Somov, Leon Bakst, Alexander Nikolaev (also known as Usto Mumin), Pavel Tchelitchew, and many others. This event will intrigue anyone interested in the intersection of art history, gender studies, and Russian/Soviet sociocultural history, providing a perspective into a largely unexplored subject in recent years. About the Lecturer: Pavel Golubev is a visiting research scholar in the History of Art Department at the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated from Moscow State University and subsequently defended his thesis there. Pavel Golubev is responsible for the multivolume edition of the diaries of Russian symbolist artist Konstantin Somov, a monograph about him, and a retrospective show at the Odesa Fine Art Museum in 2019. In Odesa, Golubev headed the exhibitions there before leaving Ukraine for the United States in 2022.

Plans are underway to build a new trade corridor connecting India to Europe via the Middle East. US, India, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates announced the project during the recent G20 summit. The European Union, France, Italy and Germany are also involved. In this edition of the program, we explore the geopolitics behind this project, as well as the prospect of the actual constructions surrounding it. Host Ding Heng is joined by Mohammed Saqib, CEO of the Bureau of Research on Industry and Economic Fundamentals, a New Delhi-based consultancy; Guy Burton, Adjunct Professor at the Department of International Affairs, Vesalius College in Brussels; Yin Zhiguang, Professor of International Politics at Fudan University.
The G20 Summit under India's presidency last week announced the launch of the India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor. It aims to enhance connectivity and trade throughout this corridor, connecting India to Saudi Arabia and then onto Europe. The other signatories to this proposal are the UAE, France, the EU, the US and Germany. In some quarters, this is also seen as a sort of a challenge to China's Belt and Road Initiative. That Italy has signalled to China its keenness to exit the Asian nation's infrastructure initiative adds to the intrigue.
In this week's podcast, Deputy Managing Editor Adam Jasser and Agnieszka Homańska discuss the launch of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor at the G20 meeting in New Dehli, which seems to be a challenge to China's Belt and Road and its claim to lead the Global South. The podcast also gives an update on the election campaigns in Poland and Slovakia, as surveys indicate a very close race in both countries.
One of the biggest highlights from this weekend's G20 Summit came from its sidelines — the announcement of the India-Middle-East-Europe Corridor, a multinational rail and shipping initiative to boost trade. In Ep 1308 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta looks at the purpose of the new corridor, the geography it will cover, and what it means for China's Belt and Road Initiative, which is a massive project along the same lines.

What is understood by the term 'The Balkans' and why is this categorisation occasionally disputed? Which countries, peoples and states belong to the Balkans? What do they have in common, and where do they differ? What was Balkan Socialism (ca. 1890-1914) and what were its intellectual and organisational ties to the Second International? Who were its leading thinkers and how does their theoretical output highlight a distinct, although largely forgotten, Balkan Marxism? What were the two 'Balkan Wars' that are often seen as a precursor to World War I? And why did the anti-imperialist Rosa Luxemburg actually support the first of these conflicts? In this fascinating podcast discussion, I had the pleasure of interviewing the historian Stefan Gužvica and exploring some of these questions - and many more. Stefan is based in Serbia and is currently editing his PhD dissertation into a book provisionally entitled Sickle without a Hammer: Revolution and Nation-Building in the Balkans, 1900s-1930s. We had actually planned to talk more about the 1920s and 1930s, but there was so much material that we did not really get beyond 1914. Hopefully we can do so in the near future, perhaps in the form of an All-Patron meeting. While the geographic center of the EU is apparently in a small Bavarian field, its political center is harder to pin down. Historically, it was probably somewhere between France and Germany, but with the war in Ukraine, this center has seemingly moved East. Warsaw was not too long ago under considerable pressure from Brussels over rule-of-law skirmishes. Now, Poland and Lithuania are reaping the political benefits of their unambiguous support to Ukraine and their long-established hawkish stance on Russia. In a sign of this evolution Polish Prime Minister Morawiecki last weekend was not afraid to lambast Germany for being “co-responsible for the mess on the energy market” and urged Berlin to step up its support for Kiev. We wanted to map this shift in European politics and stress-test whether this pivot is noise or substance. We are joined by Jana Puglierin, the head of European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) in Berlin and a returnee to the show. On the other side of the line, we are joined by Timothy Garton Ash, a historian of contemporary Europe who just published Homelands: A Personal History of Europe (2023), a part-memoir based on his decades of experience traveling across Europe. This week our Patreons will get to listen to Timothy and Jana mapping out the nuances of Central and Eastern European politics, between Poland and Hungary, or Romania and Bulgaria. They focus on growing the animal advocacy ecosystem in Asia, by conducting research prioritisation on key topics within Asian animal advocacy, developing accessible databases on the alternative protein market in Asian countries, as well as building the research capacity of Asian animal advocacy organisations. In this video, Good Growth highlights five organisations (including themselves) who might be exciting donation opportunities for those interested in supporting Asian animal advocacy. They are: Green Camel Bell, who are working to end the farming of wild animals, such as Giant Salamanders, in China Sinergia Animals, who are currently working on cage-free eggs advocacy, institutional outreach for plant-based meals, and investigations in Thailand Animal Alliance Asia, who are working on a regranting programme for international funders to reach local advocates in Asia Animal Empathy Philippines who are working on capacity-building initiatives to grow the farm animal welfare movement in the Philippines. Why might you donate to Asian animal advocacy opportunities? Good Growth has made this handy graphic below which might provide some insight! Why Anima International suspended the campaign to end live fish sales in Poland - Jakub Stencel, Weronika Zurek (Anima International) Anima International recently took the (brave!) decision recently to suspend their campaign which focuses on ending the live sale of carp in Poland. This campaign was specifically against the purchasing of live carp around Christmas time, a tradition in some post-communist countries in East Europe. Animal advocacy groups had achieved significant wins with this campaign, leading to major retailers withdrawing from the sale of live fish. However, Anima International became worried about the consumer trend to replace carp with other fish, such as salmon. As salmon is a carnivorous fish (and carp mostly isn't), Anima International was increasingly concerned this campaign could actually be leading to more animal deaths, as salmon farming often requires fish feed. Anima calculates that buying one Atlantic Salmon requires around 11 times more fish deaths than buying the same weight in common carp, due to considerations around weight, mortality rates and number of feed fish required to bring these animals to sale weight. As a result, Anima International took the difficult decision to suspend this long standing campaign, in light of potential negative impacts on fish. Longtermism and Animal ...

In this special bonus episode on Productivity Mastery, Stoyan Yankov, the co-founder and co-host of The Leaders Who Care podcast and community platform, interviews Jakob Modéer, Regional Manager of the Swiss Entrepreneurship Program. Tune in and discover: ✔️ Opportunities and challenges in the Balkan region from the Western perspective, ✔️ The role of culture in the country's economy, ✔️ Why an economic system would need plurality, ✔️ Using the entrepreneurship as a vessel to massively help, ✔️ How to practically support less developed countries, and more! Swedish by origin, American/British by education, and Balkanite by marriage and life! 30+years of living, working, failing, surviving, and succeeding in southeast Europe. Factory-owner, exporter, job creator, motivator, storyteller and now, startup ecosystem supporter with the Swiss Entrepreneurship Program. Being born and raised in Sweden, a country that scores in the top 10 of any global development index, made for a wonderful and worry-free childhood. As a teenager, with restlessness with life in a society of collective conformity and completion, Jakob applied to study for a high school year in the US, which was followed by BA studies at Lewis & Clark College out in Oregon. At the American university, Jakob was struck by the openness of the discourse, the closeness of the professors and their push for well-argued cases to improve the status quo, and the equal rejection of unsupported complaining. Graduation coincided with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the rush for societal change in East Europe and the USSR. Jakob got a job in Moscow, constructing the first golf course in the USSR. The encounter with the negative effects of totalitarianism and the planned economy was eye-opening. Finding a way to operate and get a job done in a completely different culture was an incredible challenge, a learning journey that Jakob now treasures very much. Today, 30+ years later, he recognizes that those months in the Soviet capital were his watershed moment, he knew at that moment, that this is where he wanted to be – on the front lines of the re-introduction of individual freedoms, free market, and free-thinking. During the last three decades in the lands of southeast Europe aka The Balkans, Jakob has started and failed as a factory owner, succeeded as an exporter of multiple products, worked as a consultant on job creation programs, and advised national and local governments on the art of creating jobs (often in deprived geographical areas) and most recently managing a program which puts entrepreneurs first, as the primary change agents, in a transitional society. Charlie LaRosa discusses volatility, ongoing fallout from geopolitics in East Europe, and a recent Fed rate hike on this episode of On the Markets.
We spoke with Alex Konoplyasty, co-founder of Flashpoint Ventures, about big global trends, the possible implications of the war in Eastern Europe, and why it's still early days of greentech investments in the region.London-headquartered Flashpoint manages assets worth 450-500 million and is known for investments in the firms like Chess.com and Guesty. A few key takeaways from Alex Konoplyasty:**"In this type of environment, we recommend our portfolio companies raise money as soon as possible. If they're raising money now, they should like to keep raising. If not, they should go out and start rasing right now, as fast as they can. Valuation is less important; I think it's more important to capitalize yourself for the next couple of years to make sure you have capital."**"We don't know how the consumer is going to adjust to this, like the terrible shock that is happening around the energy. Maybe they adjust in the way that we don't expect today, then maybe it's not going to be so bad as we expected, right? And we've seen historically people do adjust in shock situations - when it's gradual, it's sort of okay, but when it's like shock, people tend to change their behavior."**"In 2015, after Crimea, I decided that I didn't want to do anything with Russia. At all. We don't do any business in Russia. Like, we didn't do anything there after 2015. It was a very strategic decision for us."

Suzi talks to historian-activist Simon Pirani about the political and economic motives for the Kremlin's war, as well as the ominous signs of Russia's conduct seen in previous conflicts in Chechnya, Syria, and the Donbas in 2014. The campaign of devastation aimed at cities and towns across Ukraine, and the brutality of Russian forces has only prompted more protest in Ukraine—and in Russia too, despite draconian repressive measures. As the reality of the carnage and destruction sinks in, millions flee, but resistance grows. Simon writes about Russia, East Europe, the left, and resistance at his website, peoplenature.org. Millions of people are affected by a drought in many countries, and the latest news about the situation between Russia and Ukraine in East Europe.
Dr. Rasmus reviews the historical background to the possible military confrontation in the Ukraine, going back to Gorbachev and the breakup of the USSR in the early 1990s; aggressive moves by the US to move NATO into East Europe after promising not to do so; then US efforts to push pro-Russian politicians out of Ukraine in 2006 and the US backed Georgian invasion of South Ossetia, Russia; followed by the US financed coup of 2014 and Russian responses in Crimea and eastern Ukraine and US unilateral withdrawal from the Intermediate Nuclear Weapons (INF) treaty with Russia in 2019 and moving of NATO missile systems into Poland and Romania. Rasmus chronologically describes events since Putin's public article last summer indicating NATO in Ukraine was a ‘red line', up to the current maneuvering going on between Biden and Putin since December 2021 and western European leaders' shuttle diplomacy now underway. Why a Russian invasion is not ‘imminent', as Biden claims, but is nonetheless still possible. A preview of Dr. Rasmus' latest article, '10 Reasons Why the US May Want Russia to Invade Ukraine' is presented (see his blog, http://jackrasmus.com for the print version)
Kickstarter Ritual is a three-piece rock band from Northern Italy. Their style is acid, sharp, fast. They are strongly influenced by blues, 70' glam, stoner, and a pinch of punk. The early KR were a trio by necessity: at the beginning, the band had Davide, founder of the project, at the drums, Pini at the bass and Goran at the guitar. In these inception months, important songs such as Alive, Black Mama and Cooperate were born. While they were looking for a vocalist, drummer Davide was temporarily covering that role. The power-trio played a few gigs and people loved it. A decision was made: no singer was needed, as they already had one. In the following months, KR managed to launch their first EP, Black Mama. This gave them the chance to play in the most influential venues in northern Italy. In 2016 bassist Pini left the band for personal reasons. He was replaced by Juliusz. The same year, KR released their first LP, Ready To Take a Ride: 14 tracks that combined catchy riffs and acid voices, distorted, squeaky guitars and a galloping rhythm. We hear strong stoner influences, a bluesy bass and high pitch choruses. The single is the singalong Too Old (‘cause you are getting too old, motherfucker!). KR embarked on their first Euro tour in late ‘16, playing in some of East Europe and Austria's most influential underground venues. Despite the very good feedback on the album, Goran decided to move to Austria, quitting KR at the beginning of 2017. With an album to promote and gigs already booked, KR had to reinvent themselves. Bassist Gaby just moved back to Italy. He knew Davide since back in the early 2000's, when they played together in Houston!, a short-lived, yet intense metal-glam project. Gaby become the bassist of KR, and Juliusz embraced the role of a guitar player. After a few months of assessment, they finally found their balance. They shot the long overdue video for Too Old and resumed playing live regularly. In spring ‘18 Drifting By a Protostar was released: a 4 tracks concept EP that shows an evolution in style. Heavier low frequencies, a distinctive guitar, and more complex songs structures. The main track of the EP is the whistly Ulysses. Throughout 2018 they played in Austria, England, and Germany. KR is working on their next LP as we speak. The band confirms that there will be huge changes to the whole concept: a new music style, and new dynamics within the band, but nothing more has been disclosed so far. The thing that the band stresses is that, after these incredibly harsh years for KR and for the whole music industry, their priorities changed and the message they want to deliver is deeper and more meaningful. They confirm that the new LP will be released in 2022, followed by a promotional European tour. Stay tuned! We've got more dogs coming your way, both substantially more violent and substantially more likable than our last few. This week, it's the Black Dog, a wide array of monsters from the Barghest to the Church Grim! Is the Black Dog good? Bad? Morally neutral? Depends on where you go and is very distinctly possible based on whether you're a Christian or not. Did you know dogs have religious affiliations? Yeah, we didn't think so either. Churches all across England have seen these things, as well as plenty in East Europe and North America. We've got a regular kennel club going here, folks. Today's Topics: types of Black Dog; do not drinker river water; Theo Brown's research; wow the Black Dog is like everywhere actually; would YOU trust a very large dog to watch your kids; gosh I hope we didn't get tricked into an NFT thing; and SCP Foundation spoofs are not the same as actual folklore.
HOW TO STOP MANIPULATING PEOPLE!www.freedomain.comStefan,Tonight I surprised myself. To put things mildly, my relationship with my father was difficult. He was the kind of father for whom I could climb to the metaphoric peak of Everest in achievement and his response would be "is that it?". When he died in 2017 I was left a self destructive wreck, but listening to the content of you and similar producers helped me slowly come to terms with the reality that his dissatisfaction was really with himself and projected outward on me; I wasn't the flawed one. This realization helped me regain stability an proceed forward, but I've still been "off". While I have achieved a decent degree of success in the material sense, I still have an great difficulty to connect with others in means plutonic or romantic. Though I have some "internet friends", I've been largely isolated other than my connection with my mother, with whom I have what I could best describe as a "cautiously close" relationship.I recently helped her move and am staying with her until I can finalize a visa process (I plan to move to East Europe in a few months), and we were planning on taking a trip to Colorado tomorrow. She asked me to put some heavy things in the trailer, I told her I would and had every intention to do so. I had a few beer tonight and was taking a nap on the couch (planning to put them in in the early morning), and she woke me up to tell me she did it already and asked me "why I can never be relied on". In my semi intoxicated state I asked "do you just want me to be dead?" to which she responded "No, but I wish I could rely on you." I stewed on that, even had dark fantasies about taking my revolver and blowing my brains out, "I won't be a burden for you anymore." Instead a grabbed a lamp and smashed it on the ground in her living room. It's been years since I had an outburst like this, and it surprised me as much as it did her. I thought that I had come to terms with whatever emotional wounds I have, but clearly her words hit at a point that provoked something. I awkwardly explained to her what set me off about her words and she offered an apology, but what's standing out to me now is that clearly I have demons that I only buried rather than properly exorcized. I was hoping you might be able to help me figure out what the actual root cause of such anger is and how it can be constructively overcome. Thanks.
The Eurozone is an attractive market for Irish companies. The single currency presents a significant advantage through reduced overhead and risks arising from exchange rate fluctuations. In addition, many organisations within the EU Single Market are now redirecting their supply chains and sourcing strategies to Eurozone countries as a result of Covid and Brexit, creating new opportunities for Irish companies. Furthermore, the EU's ambitious digital and sustainability agendas will bring fundamental changes and new opportunities. The final webinar of the Europe is our Future series discusses embedding and integrating your business within the EU Single Market, taking advantage of the move to EU centric supply chains, the single currency and a more digital and sustainable business environment. Speakers for this event include: Leo Clancy, CEO of Enterprise Ireland Michael O'Sullivan, Author, Investor and Economist Tobias Lühn, Senior Business Development Manager for North and East Europe, Waterwipes John Power, Managing Director, SGL Corporate Finance Bieke Van Gorp, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer, Extra Horizon and FibriCheck Greg Kane, Commercial Director, Monex Financial Services.

What was the Cold War that shook world politics for the second half of the twentieth century? Standard narratives focus on Soviet-American rivalry as if the superpowers were the exclusive driving forces of the international system. Lorenz M. Lüthi, Associate Professor of History at McGill University in his new book Cold Wars: Asia, the Middle East, Europe (Cambridge UP, 2020), offers a radically different account, restoring agency to regional powers in Asia, the Middle East and Europe and revealing how regional and national developments shaped the course of the global Cold War. Despite their elevated position in 1945, the United States, Soviet Union and United Kingdom quickly realized that their political, economic, and military power had surprisingly tight limits given the challenges of decolonization, Asian-African internationalism, pan-Arabism, pan-Islamism, Arab–Israeli antagonism, and European economic developments. A series of Cold Wars ebbed and flowed as the three world regions underwent structural changes that weakened or even severed their links to the global ideological clash, leaving the superpower Cold War as the only major conflict that remained by the 1980s. While not everyone will necessarily agree with all aspects of this at times hyper-revisionist account of the conflict that we call the Cold War, scholars and lay person alike will be ultra-impressed by the wide range of this narrative history, as well as the breath of research displayed by Professor Luthi. In short this is a book that is required reading for anyone interested in, or specializing in the Cold War. Charles Coutinho Ph. D. of the Royal Historical Society, received his doctorate from New York University. His area of specialization is 19th and 20th-century European, American diplomatic and political history. He has written recently for Chatham House's International Affairs.
