Selections from the many “Small Hall” concerts at last week's Prince Edward Island Festival of Small Halls.
Tim Chiasson of award winning Pop Folk group The East Pointers takes us behind their new single 'Stronger Than You Know'! The new single is a real departure from the band's previous body of work and showcases their undeniable musical chops and reminds listeners that they are stronger than they think even when times get tough. In January this year the band suffered an unimaginable loss with the sudden passing of beloved band member Koady Chaisson. The new music has Koady's musical footprint on it as the band were well into the new EP sessions just prior to his untimely death. Written by Tim Chaisson, Jake Charron, Koady Chaisson, and Colin MacDonald (The Trews) and produced by Derek Hoffman (Arkells, The Trews, Silverstein), the upbeat and decidedly folk / pop tune is on track to reach a wider audience and add to the impressive 20 million career streams they have amassed to date. Inspiration is a funny friend. It finds you and guides you. It takes you to strange and wonderful places. It introduces you to heroes. I started playing Celtic music in 1999... by accident. I had three "Celtic" songs in my song repertoire: "The Scotsman", "Irish Ballad" by Tom Lehrer, and an original Enya-esque song with nonsensical lyrics called "Lounging in La La Land". I was practicing on the South Mall at the University of Texas at Austin when red-haired gentleman asked if I'd like to perform at a Renaissance festival. As a Dungeons & Dragons nerd, I was so excited I asked my friend Andrew McKee to start a band with me. Soon the Brobdingnagian Bards found new Celtic music heroes and inspiration. For me, it was The Wolfe Tones, Christy Moore, The Irish Balladeers, and some random cassette that was called Irish Drinking Songs. That was my introduction to Celtic music. Those were my first Celtic music heroes. Later, I added Ed Miller, Serious Kitchen (featuring Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), Dougie MacLean, The Elders, Gaelic Storm, Clandestine, and even Bing Crosby. So of course many of these you have heard on my podcasts. Who are your Celtic music heroes? Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the virtual Public House for Celtic culture and change through music. Prince Edward Island is in the spotlight this week on Canadian Musician Radio, as we have two huge talents from Canada's smallest province. Catherine MacLellan has had an impressive month, being nominated for a pair of JUNO Awards along with some nods for the 2015 East Coast Music Awards on the success of her independently-released latest album, Raven's Sun. We'll speak about the release and the accolades it has garnered, along with what she's currently got on the go. Also, we'll speak with fellow Islander Tim Chaisson about the upcoming Canadian release of his new LP, Lost in Light. Tim's fresh from yet anouther successful tour of Australia - his sixth in the last few years - and has a number of Canadian dates on the horizon.
We're coming to you live from Music PEI Week 2014 with a great bunch of guests from different arms of the business. First, we'll be speaking with Jeff Leake, the Director of Music Programming at Sirius XM Canada, who'll have some tips for musicians on how to capture the attention of people in such a role. Then, we'll speak with PEI performing songwriter, fiddler, and all around nice guy Tim Chaisson about what's keeping him busy about a year following the release of his album, The Otherside. Finally, we've got producer Gavin "Golden" Brown, who's had a hand in monster albums by the likes of Three Days Grace, Billy Talent, Metric, and more. He'll speak about some tricks of the trade and the current state of his business. What's more, we'll have Mike Carver of Music PEI and the band North Lakes on co-hosting duties. Just swell.
Who are you? When we contemplate those elements of our origins, personality and physical being…we have to consider our genetic history, the environment in which we were raised and live and, the behavior and stories of those who influenced our lives. I come from a long line of farmers and fishermen, hard working people who worked the land and sea….growing potatoes, milking cows and living off the natural resources of a picturesque island named after the fourth son of King George the third, the father of Queen Victoria, and the Duke of Kent and Strathearn: Prince Edward. I am descended from dedicated, persistent laborers with indomitable spirits and everlasting endurance: who cleared rocky fields, sailed rough seas and overcame obstacles that we would consider enormous. They met adversity with acceptance, fortitude and faith. My ancestors were Scottish Catholics, devoted to their God and each other. They had names like Angus, Theresa, Peter, Mary, Sarah, James, Donald, Ellen, Penelope, Allan, Johanna, Pius, Helena, and Glen. They were Maritimers from Down East: They lived on a beautiful island between the Northumberland Strait and the Gulf of Lawrence. Immigrating to the suburbs of Boston, where they came to work and raise their families. I am the 6th generation of a family of Scottish Catholic immigrants to the New World. All that I am, all that I have, all that I trust, believe in and follow are a result of those people who raised me, encouraged me, and gave me the opportunity to succeed. My parents, grandparents, Aunts and Uncles are my role models because of the way they were raised, and influenced by their parents, grand parents and long past ancestors who came to the new world from the old. I owe them everything; and in so many ways I live my life in honor of theirs. Who are you? My guess is that we have a lot in common. As fellow runners you take to the road in honor and celebration of those who made you who you are today. It’s not a genetic thing, it’s an inspirational thing…it’s the stories of the people who lived their lives, overcoming adversity and setting a positive example for all of us. These are our forerunners, the people who would go on to raise parents who would one day raise us: and we owe them everything. Links: The song “Prince Edward Island (Is Heaven to Me)” was performed by Mac Wiseman with words and music by Harold Breau. You can find the tune on iTunes. Some of the traditional island music heard in this episode was from a live concert in Charlottetown performed by the Chaissons, featuring Tim Chaisson at MUSIC LOCO: ONLY IF YOU LIKE IT: Phedippidations is supported every month through the very kind and sincerely generous financial support of 28 fellow runners: William, Vera, Katie, Heather, Ryan, Jan, Chaise, Andie, Gordon, Scott, Mike, David, Jeff, Colin, Jason, Diane, Manuel, Al, Cheryl, Ron, Mark, Martha, Greg, Jim, Maddy, Tim, Bill and Kevin.
