Policies change overnight (for good reasons they say), and suddenly folks who have followed all the rules find themselves stranded. That is Alyanna's story. She moved to Canada, paid 10X the fees of domestic students to study, excelled academically, gained Canadian work experience, and integrated into the country. She did everything the immigration system told her to do. But by the time she graduated, Canada had moved the goalposts. The same pathway that led to permanent residency now led to... uncertainty. In this conversation, Alyanna and I explore what it felt like to watch the rules change. We also explore:* Missing home while building a new life* Immigrating as a student vs. a PR* Why Canada's rhetoric shifted from “we want you to stay” to “study doesn't guarantee residency”* The unfairness of retroactive rule changes* How Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie inspired her journalism careerOfficial Links✅ Connect with Alyanna Denise Chua on LinkedIn✅ Read her piece on The Walrus; Pay Tuition, Follow the Rules, Then Pack Your BagsOne AskIf you found this story helpful, please forward or share it to one immigrant out there. "I think I grew up more sheltered. I didn't have the typical New York upbringing." - Annie Vo This episode was special in so many ways — not just because it marked six years of A Vietnam Podcast, but because of Annie's story. Her journey from Saigon to Yale, and then full circle back to Vietnam, embodies what this podcast is all about: identity, resilience, and connection.Hearing how Annie navigated culture shock, built a successful career, and now helps others feel seen and supported — that hit home. Her warmth and authenticity reminded me why I started this podcast. These are the conversations that matter. They're real, honest, and grounded in experience. Clint moved to Canada from Trinidad when he was in Grade 9, over 40 years ago. On landing in Toronto, everything looked normal. But on the plane ride to Edmonton, “I found myself surrounded by people I saw on TV,” he says. Immigrating to Alberta at that time meant Clint literally knew every Black person in his community. “I remember walking around going to different events, just going to the gym, hanging out. I kind of knew every Black person," he says. Fast forward to today, Clint struggles to keep up with the new faces he comes across daily. While he's proud of the progress the Black community has made, Clint remains committed to building a welcoming support system for newcomers. His goal? “All I want people to remember is that if they need anything, they can call Clint.”In this conversation, Clint and I explore the concept of systemic change as a marathon, not a sprint. Christian Leemer joins the show to discuss his time living in South Africa.
It seems that, in this day and age, Immigrating to another country is not all that uncommon. But with all the well known causes and issues, it's startling to actually hear them from someone who has experienced the inefficiency of our system. Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts. My guest today is Irma Goosen. She was born and raised in South Africa, came to the United States, and eventually settled in Canada; but the reasons and timeline of these changes will likely shock you as much as they did me, which is to say: A fraction of how bad they were for Irma. She also coaches for TEDx and gives speeches on the benefits of legal immigration for both people and companies. And if you live in a privileged country, this interview will definitely leave you feeling grateful for every small and large convenience we have. ( Www.IrmaGoosen.Com ) ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/irma-goosen/?originalSubdomain=ca ) Let's see if it's worth moving. So what would you have to see or experience to make you want to leave your country? In other news... March is pretty much over, and here the rankings are regulating: 1. England of the United Kingdom. 2. Hong Kong, who dropped a spot after i asked why I was popular. Was I not suppose to ask? 3. The United States, with California, Illinois, and Washington now at the top. 4. Australia, with Victoria now leading Queensland and Western Australia. 5. Canada, with Ontario still keeping them just above Israel. That's it for this week! Have a great week, a great weekend, and I'll see you all back here next week for another new episode! Until the next episode, pretty please do all the things to help the show: rate, review, like, and subscribe. Most of the folks he met came either as students or through work permits that tied them to specific employers.21 years later, all that has changed. Different immigration programs such as the Highly Skilled Migrant Program (HSMP) that ended in 2008 meant more Nigerians, including folks who felt they had "hit a ceiling" in Nigeria's job market, moved to the United Kingdom without the limitations of a work or study permit. In this conversation, Feyi and I explore what his immigration journey has been like. We also chat about: * Why time is key to integration and building a stable life* Dealing with the loss of status and starting over* Why integration should happen on your own terms* Why newcomers need to be ruthless in the company they keep, and a lot of good stuff. In this episode, Krish Palaniappan shares his personal insights on the complexities of US immigration. He emphasizes that immigration should be viewed as a privilege rather than a right, discussing the challenges and realities faced by immigrants. He encourages listeners to appreciate the opportunities available in the US while acknowledging the need for improvements in the immigration system. The conversation highlights the importance of respect, gratitude, and understanding in the immigration process, urging a balanced perspective on the experiences of immigrants. Takeaways Immigration is a privilege granted by a country, not a right. The immigration process can be lengthy and complex, often taking years. Many immigrants contribute positively to society, even if not at the highest levels. Comparing immigration systems globally reveals that many countries have stricter processes. Respect and gratitude for the immigration system are essential for a harmonious society. Life is not fair, and sometimes qualified individuals may not succeed in immigrating. The odds of becoming a highly successful immigrant are low for most. Good people should have a legal path to immigration, and improvements are needed. Understanding the immigration process can help alleviate frustrations. The journey of immigration can be painful, but patience is crucial. Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Immigration Perspectives 02:53 The Privilege of Immigration 06:11 The Reality of Immigration Processes 09:05 Comparative Immigration Experiences 11:54 The Importance of Respect and Gratitude 14:48 Conclusion and Call for Understanding

With this episode the Three Whisky Happy Hour emigrates into its very own identity on Ricochet and Steve's new group Substack, "Political Questions," but not to worry—the old Power Line Show will live on in its old format as an interview show. The 3WHH, meanwhile, is rebooting with some new formats. We'll be doing some show with a single-subject format; on some we'll do a round robin of hot topics and reflections on currtent news items, and we'll even have some guests from time to time, as well as emergency shows when somethingbig happens—or we get a new single malt in whose virtues we just have to share. And having completed our emigration to a new logo and format, it seemed only logical that we'd take up as our primary focus this week the issue of immigration, with an attempt at an orderly procession through the key aspects of the matter: How much is too much? Should we have an immigration pause? What's up with the H1-B visa controversy anyway? How should skills-based immigration be done, and should we move to some kind of point- or auction system to regulate immigration. And finally the big one: what about birthright citizenship? We throw down pretty hard on this issue, and our three bartenders nearly get into a brawl about several of these questions. So don't think alone when you can drink it all in with us!

The past few weeks, probably months, have been an interesting one for international students looking to immigrate to Canada for their studies. Nothing is as it seems. And while this can leave you feeling panicked. And tempted to do anything to get into the country before the "doors close on you," Olufemiloye thinks otherwise.Olu moved to Canada as an international student over nine years ago, and has since dedicated himself to helping people find their way to Canada. Legally! He joined me on The Newcomers Podcast to chat about moving to Canada before japa (Nigerian slang for ‘to migrate') became japa. We also talked about:* Three plans you MUST have in place before immigrating as an international student* The downstream effects of the Canadian system of governance on international students such as:* The school in Atlantic Canada that took in so many students they had to start taking lectures in a cinema hall* Tips for international students looking to move to Canada* Why you should immigrate with a clear plan of action, and more. Folks, I get it. Things look crazy right now. But be kind to yourselves. Look before you jump.If you've gotten this far, you should probably subscribe.Did you read it? This is a public episode. Interview with Pastor Eric Leveille from Laval, Quebec - Part 3
There's this prevailing thought that immigration has to be from your home country to the other side of the world, but our expert today shows that sometimes: Those are the easier types of moving. Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts. My guest today is Ilona Seddik. Ilona made several big moves in her life, going from the arctic circle, to central Russia, and then to the United States. Its a fascinating story with all kinds of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, but Ilona shares all of the good and the bad with us. Shockingly, Ilona has only been speaking English for two years, and yet it's far better than most people I have met with ten years of English as a second language. I also really enjoy her accent, and hopefully you will too. ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/ilona-seddik-069011203/ ) ( https://www.youtube.com/@ilonaseddik/videos ) Let's make the right relocation for us! I know there was a lot to take in on this one, but so much of it is so critical to being who you want to be, and living the way you dreamed of. In other news, August is over and September has begun. Here's the updated rankings for the new month: 1. Canada, with Ontario pushing the country to an early lead. 2. The United States, holding second place thanks to Ohio, Texas, and Massachusetts. 3. Ireland! Making a triumphant return! 4. Australia, with Queensland and Victoria competing for the top spot. 5. England of the United Kingdom, holding a one listener lead over Ghana. That's it for this week! Have a great week, a great weekend, and I'll see you all back here next week for another new episode! Until the next episode, pretty please do all the things to help the show: rate, review, like, and subscribe. Reach out to DumbEnoughPodcast@Gmail.Com or on any social media if you want to reach me personally. Most importantly, Stay Dumb!

From humble beginnings, Sandra Johnson sees education as the pathway out of adversity. With a belief in breaking cycles and aiding others, she, alongside her partner, started a university, embodying her convictions about lifelong learning and community empowerment. In this Part 2 episode (with Part 1 featuring her husband and business partner, Marco), we hear Sandra tell of her childhood in a challenging neighborhood where education was not prioritized, leading her to face numerous obstacles from a young age, including living in poverty and experiencing violence. Determined to break the cycle, Sandra pursued education relentlessly, despite being unaware of available financial aid and feeling out of place in her initial university environment. From that, Sandra shares her path to making it, the lessons learned along the way, and how she and Marco continue to drive forward, turning every challenge into an opportunity for growth and innovation. Join us as Sandra provides inspiration and insights on how adversity can fuel a purpose-driven life. Welcome to Making It! This weekly show explores the lives and stories of entrepreneurs as they share their unique perspectives on their success and the path to making it. “It's such a rush. . . founding a university, to see these kids, these young adults, finding their purpose and seeing that rush on them. And they're unstoppable, [as] they become successful.”— Sandra Johnson Guest Bio: Sandra Johnson is currently the owner and co-founder of Accreditation Advisors Group and has dedicated much of her life to the education of others. Immigrating to Lancaster, California, from Chile in 1970, Sandra attributes her success to her parents, who continually challenged her to overcome obstacles. Arriving in the United States in the first grade and speaking very little English, Sandra soon became the school's translator, bridging the language gap between administrators and Spanish-speaking students — all while growing up in a tough neighborhood and, at times, receiving government assistance. Sandra's childhood experience set the foundation of her passion: changing lives through education. Previously, Sandra was the CFO and Co-Founder of the University of Antelope Valley. Since its inception in 1997, Sandra has overseen her company's transformation from a small CPR company start-up into a nationally accredited higher education institution. The University of Antelope Valley has graduated over 1,000 students a year, with programs ranging from the master's-level to career-specific certificates. The University employed over 100 residents and had two campuses, an athletics program, and over 30 academic programs and certifications. Sandra and her husband decided to retire from the University and sold the University of Antelope Valley in July 2022. They felt this would be the best move for the community to bring investors with higher volumes of funds to quickly assist in making the university a local mark and a global one. Sandra has become a focal business leader in the Antelope Valley, earning the 2009 City of Lancaster's Citizen of the Year Award, recognized jointly with Marco Johnson — her husband and co-founder of the university. In 2012, she obtained strong community support in her successful run for a seat on the Lancaster City Council. She recently addressed a Congressional Woman's Conference on entrepreneurial fundamentals. She attributes her success to putting vision before profit. Did you know that Latinas make up only 3% of the marketing industry? And that's being generous because Latinx in general only makes up 6% of the marketing industry! And it's crazy because every industry needs marketing. No matter what you love there's always a marketing department. So why aren't we in the room when these marketing decisions are being made? Or even better, how do we get in the room? Alejandra Hurtado started Majesty Academy, the first marketing school for Latinas. With over 12 years of marketing experience, she noticed a shortage of Latinas in Marketing and Tech. Now, her mission is to use her academy to empower more women and Latinas into marketing. Alejandra is deeply committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the marketing and tech industries. In this week's episode, Alejandra tells us why she wants more Latinas to be in the marketing industry. Whether you're an entrepreneur or you work for a company you love, marketing is all about communication. And the Latino population is being neglected because there aren't a ton of Latina markers to speak to our own people. The marketing industry needs people with cultural competency, and that includes you. Listen to Alejandro's episode to hear all about her journey as an immigrant, why she loves marketing, and why she started Majesty Academy. In this episode, Adam sits down with serial entrepreneur and endurance athlete Steven Pivnik. With incredible achievements in both building a successful business and completing grueling endurance races, Steven has overcome tremendous challenges through grit and perseverance. In today's discussion, he provides invaluable insights on turning vision into disciplined action through planning, execution, and overcoming fear. Steven also shares how powerful tools like visualization helped propel him to achieve goals that initially seemed impossible. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Immigrating to the US as a child from Eastern Europe Building a tech company from scratch Achieving feats like Ironman World Championship and ultra marathons Lessons on overcoming fear, planning, execution and visualization Episode Highlights: [06:10] The Transition from Doing it All to Delegating Effectively Steven discusses both the importance of grinding and hard work to get a new business or goal off the ground, as well as the critical need for delegation as things scale. While grinding builds character and is necessary initially, Steven acknowledges that as a company grows, there comes a time when delegation becomes even more important than personally doing everything yourself. He notes it can be difficult for CEOs and founders to let go and trust others, but determining when to delegate more is key to allowing scalability beyond one person's capacity. Steven enjoys helping entrepreneurs through his advisory work to identify the right moment to shift more towards delegation as their growth necessitates. [21:33] Building a Successful Tech Company from Scratch Steven shared his journey building tech company Binary Tree from the ground up over 26 years through relentless hard work. He also grew the custom application development business to provide enterprise email migration software and services. The company achieved consecutive annual growth despite challenges until culminating in an acquisition that validated the tremendous success and scale the business reached from its humble origins. [28:43] Lessons from the Ironman Grind Steven highlighted how achieving this goal demonstrated his incredible grit, determination and commitment to endurance sports. Finishing 12 Ironman races, each one a grueling physical and mental challenge, shows the type of relentless dedication it took for Steven to achieve his goal of racing at the Ironman World Championship level. It serves as an inspiring example of the grind it sometimes requires to accomplish what at first seems impossible through perseverance and hard work over time. [39:07] The Power of Visualization Steven envisioned racing at the Ironman World Championship in Kona so many times through dedicated meditation. By the time he achieved that goal, the actual experience matched what he had previously imagined down to the smallest details. This demonstrates how effective visualization can be to program the mind and body to help achieve big goals, as the mind cannot differentiate between vividly envisioning something and it truly happening.
