Today we are joined by Alan McDougall, Professor of History at the University of Guelph, and the author of Dreams and Songs To Sing: A People's History of Liverpool F.C. From Shankly to Klopp (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2025). In our conversation, we discussed the rise of Liverpool as a global football club, the crises that beset the club during the Heysel and Hillsborough disasters, and the necessity of inherent optimism of fandom in contemporary sports. In Dreams and Songs to Sing, McDougall writes the history of Liverpool FC from Shankly to Klopp in a register that will appeal to both popular and scholarly readers. McDougall is a lifelong Liverpool supporter, and he is careful to point out where his connections to the club and its fandom might shade his examination, but he also shows how those same affective connections allow him to a unique entry point into issues only visible to fans and that supports can be even more critical than a detached observer. This is especially true in his investigation of Heysel and Hillsborough. The book proceeds roughly chronologically. The book's early chapters examine the club's connection to Liverpool's working-class district 4 and to their Anfield home ground. He pays special attention to the supporter's end - the notorious Kop. Using oral history interviews, McDougall illustrates the exceptional pull of the stadium to both local and global fans. The heart of the book is its engaging, thick description of the club's history during the Shankly era. McDougall shows that not only was Shankly a very successful manager, and quite funny, but that he ran the club with a sense of Liverpool's local identity. A man who arrived at the right time – he benefitted from Liverpool's growing global reputation; Beatlemania gave the city a sound but players and fans rubbed shoulders with comics, musicians, and poets. Shankly embodied the very local socialist, working-class attitudes of the majority of club supporters. His retirement shook the whole city. McDougall uses a family repository of letters to show how people from around the city, the country, and the world wrote to him to express sadness at him leaving and to wish him luck. McDougall's account might be from an insider, but his analysis does not shy away from shining a light on the difficult social politics that accompanied the club's enormous success on the field. European Cup victories sit alongside the deadly hooligan violence at Heysel. Black players like Howard Gayle and John Barnes face racism from the club's supporters. The club first ignores and then undervalues the rise of women's football. McDougall's history ends in the Klopp era – perhaps a mercy to Liverpool fans! He shows how the contemporary club embodies the idea of a global club with a local heart. The international ownership of the club has successfully navigated the rise of the Premier League and the increasing commercialization of European football, but local supporters have been innovative at creating a culture of resistance to changes that could undermine the glocal identity of Liverpool. Klopp symbolized this new football club: cosmopolitan, emotional, forward, successful. Compelling and hard to put down, McDougall's Dreams and Songs to Sing will appeal to all readers of sports history. It will be of particular interest to Liverpool supporters and football fanatics. Jean Van Bronkhorst is a dream researcher and consciousness explorer whose work focuses on the profound experiences that occur at the threshold between waking reality and the dream state. In Dreams at the Threshold, she examines lucid dreams, hypnagogic imagery, precognitive dreaming, and the symbolic language of the subconscious as gateways to deeper awareness. Drawing from research, case studies, and experiential insight, Van Bronkhorst reveals how dreams can act as bridges between the conscious mind, the unconscious, and expanded states of consciousness. Her work invites audiences to recognize dreams not as random mental noise, but as meaningful experiences that offer guidance, insight, and a deeper connection to the nature of reality.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. A Company of Wolves (1984), Nightbreed (1990), Errementari (2017) As horror fans, we might not really think about the amount of horror elements that are in other sub-genres, such as fantasy. Sure, we all know titles like Conan the Barbarian (1982) that has a guy who turns into a giant snake, or Legend (1985) where one of the main characters is some sort of demon or devil, do those elements make it a horror film? We all know that horror is used in many different genres of films, even some where the filmmakers themselves go out of their way to make sure to define it NOT as horror. But we know. But when it comes to Fantasy / Horror, that's where the story might be based on fairy tales or folklore, and definitely has some elements of horror in there, either in content or maybe just characters. The line can get kind of blurry. But we also know that if its entertaining, then does it really matter? Take a listen as we discuss 3 titles that we all felt hit the Fantasy / Horror sub-genre, for a variety of reasons. Tune in and find out why. Titles mentioned in this episode: Army of Darkness (1992), Beastmaster (1982), A Company of Wolves (1984), Conan the Barbarian (1982), The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), The Crying Game (1992), The Devil's Backbone (2001), Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010), Errementari (2017), Eyes of Fire (1983), Frankenstein (1931), Freaks (1932), Häxan (1922), Hellboy (2004), Hellraiser (1987), In Dreams (1999), Interview with the Vampire (1994), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), Krull (1983), Legend (1985), Lord of Illusions (1995), Masters of the Universe (1987), Nightbreed (1990), Pan's Labyrinth (2006), Phantasm (1979), The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), Sword and the Sorcerers (1982), Suspiria (1977)

As the film famously polarized critics upon release, the group also discuss the surprising watchability of its most unsettling scenes, along with distinctly "American" sensibilities tapped into by Lynch and other offbeat filmmakers of his generation, and the desires which underly the dually transparent and enigmatic actions of the film's main characters, Jeffrey, Dorothy, Frank, and Sandy.  What kind of beer do you like? Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/helmet-2024Subscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTube“I could not exist without guitar,” admits Helmet founding lead guitarist and singer Page Hamilton. “I know this to be true because I'm a miserable asshole if I don't play guitar. When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is play guitar. It's an incredible instrument and I just love it.”But what does one do with that creative codependency? Page Hamilton's impactful contributions to rock music were cemented when Helmet wrote and recorded a pair of back-to-back blisters with 1992's Meantime and 1994's Betty. Those pillars of '90s alternative metal and guitar granite forever chiseled out his place in hard-rock history. Since 1989, Hamilton and Helmet have dished out a total of nine studio albums (plus a live set) that balance punishing, fastened-down ferocity with mercurial moments of melody that make their sledgehammer fall harder. Beyond that legacy, Page was a part of David Bowie's band for the 1999 Hours tour, playing Saturday Night Live and being included on two live albums from the Starman. Further diversifying his guitar vocabulary, he's contributed to several film scores for Heat, Titus, In Dreams, Catwoman, and Chicago Cab. He's explored the instrument's outer realms with German avant-garde guitarist Caspar Brötzmann on a live improv album (1996's Zulutime), and expanded his vocabulary by diving into jazz guitar, noting in our Rundown he'll release an album next year. Hamilton has even put out a guitar instruction DVD, Sonic Shapes: Expanding Rock Guitar Vocabulary for Hal Leonard. All of this (and more) accomplished because guitar is his lifeblood. And we found out during our Rig Rundown—filmed May 7, 2024 at Nashville's Exit/In—that most of this material was spawned from three key ingredients, all still in his rig: ESP Horizon guitars, Fryette amps, and DiMarzio humbuckers. These partnerships with each company are not gratuitous or grifting. He's been aligned with ESP since 1989. He started working with DiMarzio in the early '90s, and he and Steven Fryette have sharpened his sound since 1996. These three friendships have fostered an integral strand in Page's tonal DNA, and Hamilton covers each at length with us. Plus, he breaks down the simplifying move from a complicated Bradshaw rack-switching system to something more modern and efficient, with five Boss boxes and a duo of H9s.Shop Page Hamilton's Gear:ESP LTD Horizon 87 Solidbody Electric Guitar - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/9gKdg4 DiMarzio Air Norton - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/k0x2O0 D'Addario EXL140 XL Strings - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/anEGON Eventide H9 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/baQr0x Boss MT-2W Metal Zone Waza Craft - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/AW4MPK Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/1r4d9D Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/JzDdK2 Boss ES-5 Effects Switching System - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/ZQgj6K Pedaltrain Nano+ - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/XYJ9mGFull Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/helmet-2024Subscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPG Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar0:00 - D'Addario Strings0:15 - Chris Kies Intro1:43 - Page Hamilton Intro3:09 - ESP LTD PH-6004:23 - ESP LTD...

Two time Olivier nominee Fabian Aloise is back In The Frame!Fabian is the co-director and choreographer of Kathy And Stella Solve A Murder which is about to open in the West End at the Ambassadors Theatre following two sold out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and a tour. He's also preparing to make his Broadway debut as the choreographer of Sunset Boulevard starring Nicole Scherzinger and directed by Jamie Lloyd, having received an Olivier nomination for his work on the West End production which ran to huge acclaim at the Savoy Theatre. Some of Fabian's recent work as a choreographer includes the first international non-replica production of Wicked in Hamberg, Germany, the London production of Bring It On, Cabaret in Paris, SpongeBob The Musical on tour and In Dreams in Leeds and Toronto. Originally from Canada, Fabian trained as a ballet dancer in Melbourne, Australia but, after being told he wouldn't make it as a ballet dancer, pursued a career in musical theatre. As a performer, Fabian appeared in many shows including the West End productions of We Will Rock You and Legally Blonde. In Dreams in Double Time: On Race, Freedom, and Bebop (Duke UP, 2023), Jonathan Leal examines how the musical revolution of bebop opened up new futures for racialized and minoritized communities. Blending lyrical nonfiction with transdisciplinary critique and moving beyond standard Black/white binary narratives of jazz history, Leal focuses on the stories and experiences of three musicians and writers of color: James Araki, a Nisei multi-instrumentalist, soldier-translator, and literature and folklore scholar; Raúl Salinas, a Chicano poet, jazz critic, and longtime activist who endured the US carceral system for over a decade; and Harold Wing, an Afro-Chinese American drummer, pianist, and songwriter who performed with bebop pioneers before working as a public servant. Leal foregrounds that for these men and their collaborators, bebop was an affectively and intellectually powerful force that helped them build community and dream new social possibilities. Bebop's complexity and radicality, Leal contends, made it possible for those like Araki, Salinas, and Wing who grappled daily with state-sanctioned violence to challenge a racially supremacist, imperial nation, all while hearing and making the world anew.
