This week, writers John Berendt and Taylor Mac discuss the Goodman Theatre's world-premiere stage musical adaptation of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Berendt is the author of the original book the musical is based on, and Mac wrote the book for the adaptation. Learn more about Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: The Musical, here. This conversation originally took place July 8, 2024 and was recorded live at the American Writers Museum. AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOME More about Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: The Musical Southern charm is bountiful in Savannah, Georgia. But behind polite smiles, the eccentric residents are filled with secrets and motives. When wealthy antiques dealer Jim Williams is accused of murder, the sensational trial uncovers hidden truths and exposes the fine line between good and evil—which sparks Lady Chablis and other Savannahians to change the city forever. The world-premiere stage musical adaptation of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil—John Berendt's 1994 blockbuster non-fiction book, a Pulitzer-Prize finalist that was on the New York Times Best-Seller list for 216 weeks—is realized at Goodman Theatre by creators MacArthur “Genius” Grantee Taylor Mac (book), Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown (music and lyrics) with choreography by Tanya Birl-Torres. Tony Award winner Rob Ashford directs a cast led by Tony- and Grammy-Award winning actor J. Harrison Ghee as The Lady Chablis; Tony Award nominee Tom Hewitt as Jim Williams; and Olivier Award nominee Sierra Boggess as Emma Dawes. JOHN BERENDT was born and raised in Syracuse, New York. He attended Harvard, where he majored in English and wrote for the Harvard Lampoon. Upon graduation he was hired by Esquire magazine—first as an editor, then as a monthly columnist. Later, he became the editor of New York Magazine. It was during a trip to the South in the mid-1980s that he discovered Savannah—a cloistered, inward-looking garden city that basked on the Georgia coast, reveling in its own peculiarities and giving not a thought to the outside world. He was enchanted and began writing about the city and its people in what would eventually become the non-fiction book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. TAYLOR MAC is a MacArthur Fellow, a Pulitzer Prize Finalist, a Tony Award Nominee (for Best Play), and the recipient of the Kennedy Prize (with Matt Ray), the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a Guggenheim, a Drama League Award, a NY Drama Critics Circle Award, two Obie's, two Bessies, and the first American to receive the International Ibsen Award. Mac is the author of Joy and Pandemic (Huntington Theater); The Hang (with Matt Ray); Gary, A Sequel to Titus Andronicus; A 24-Decade History of Popular Music; Hir; The Fre, The Walk Across America For Mother Earth, The Lily's Revenge; The Young Ladies Of; and The Be(A)st of Taylor Mac. The documentary Taylor Mac's A 24-Decade History of Popular Music recently premiered on HBO to critical acclaim.

In this episode Jim is in conversation with Tom Hewitt MBE, founder and CEO of Surfers Not Street Children – a charity that uses surfing, mentorship and care to intervene in the lives of children living on the street in South Africa and Mozambique. After first encountering street children on an anti-apartheid fact-finding visit with his father, Tom settled permanently in South Africa at the age of 19 and set about working with local organisations to improve the lives of the kids sleeping rough around his neighbourhood. It wasn't until many years later that he was inspired to combine his lifelong passion for surfing with the programme and establish a new structure that offered mentorship, intervention and distraction through the act of riding waves. In this conversation, Tom recounts the charity's origin story and the significant moments in his own life that led to its inception and development. He dives deep into the logistics of operating in a fast-changing South Africa in the early days and the importance of embracing anarchy as well as the myriad ways SNSC has since established itself, from forging relationships with local gang members to applying global media pressure to the South African government via a well-timed newspaper editorial. He also discusses the unexpected challenges – like the backlash faced by local white Durban surfers when young black kids from the programme took their place in the lineup – and the humbling rewards – like when a group of kids in his care stepped in to face down a man threatening him with a machete. Tom Hewitt, a lifelong surfer, first went to South Africa in 1990 on an anti-apartheid fact finding trip with local activists. He also spent time with peace activists in Maputo, Mozambique during Mozambique's civil war. It was here that he met street children for the first time. Inspired by the movement against apartheid, Tom stayed on in South Africa to volunteer further. Shocked at the plight of street children in Mozambique, upon his return to South Africa, he noticed and befriended a group of street children in East London, a town in the Eastern Cape. In 1992 he started working with street children in that town as a way of supporting, in a small way, the transition of the country into the new South Africa and in 1994 he was a peace monitor at South Africa's first free and fair elections. In 1997, he relocated to Durban and a year later, set up the Durban Street Team which introduced surfing as an activity. This was so popular among the street children that they soon pioneered a new model for working with homeless street children which fused surfing with mentorship and care. This organisation would go on to be renamed Surfers Not Street Children. The charity  has gone from strength to strength and now works with both street children and children at risk in the downtown Point area of Durban. Surfers Not Street Children also operates in  Mozambique and in 2017 launched Girls Surf Too, specifically targeting girls living in difficult circumstances. In this episode, Tom shares more of the backstory to Surfers Not Street Children and how it has evolved and developed over the last 20+ years. We discuss the challenges he has faced along the way and the unexpected benefits that have come from his work with the children and those who support them. We also discuss the  growing body of evidence around the power of "blue health" initiatives and his plans for the future of the charity. Find out more about Surfers Not Street Children: website: https://www.surfnotstreets.orgInstagram: @surfersnotstreetchildrenTwitter: @surfnotstreetsFind out more about Tom's work: Instagram: @tomhewittmbeTwitter: @tomhewittmbeTo contact Nicki about The Everyday Adventure Podcast, Coaching or "Resilience & Adventure" Workshops for Leaders, Teams and Individuals:Email: nicki@resiliencework.co.ukWebsite: https://www.resiliencework.co.ukInstagram: @resilienceatwork ,  @everydayadventurepodFacebook: The Everyday Adventure ClubTwitter: @resilience_worx

Brad talks of the influence Tom had on his sons- David, Bernie and Mark, all highly successful in their own right. He says his Aunt Jenna, the only girl in the Hewitt family wasn’t allowed to drive in races. The young horseman talks of the trotting genes to be found on the maternal side of his family. Brad says his brothers have also chosen harness racing as their preferred livelihood- Sam as a trainer and breaker, Scott as a trainer and farrier. Sister Jess also gets a mention. The thirty year old looks back on the thrill of his first winning drive and his handful of winners at historic Harold Park.   Brad pays tribute to the special horses who’ve helped to launch his career. He speaks with great reverence of his all time favourite Spare Me Days.   He speaks of his great friendship with Canberra Raiders skipper Jarrod Croker, an avid harness racing fan. For the trots punters Brad highlights a couple of promising young horses in his stable. He talks of his only Gr 1 winning drive to date. It was Rockin’ Marty in a Breeders Challenge Final. The horse was trained by his father David. Brad says his partner Milly had no interest in horses when they met but quickly adapted. He and Milly are the proud parents of Ruby who’s almost two and William who arrived only a few weeks ago.

Surrendering and not trying to fight the things out of your control.  If it is just thoughts that create the fear and the feeling how noticing our minds and the stories they build about right and wrong can help. Building love not judgement through the power of silence and observation. Will and Liam talk about greed, as abundance grows,  across money, sex and surfing and why surfing - if you are going to get addicted to anything - is the drug of choice! Can taking your own good vibes and high energy into the ocean create better waves? Going from flat to flow with the ‘positive vibes wave machine'. Rumi gets a mention and the belief the Universe has got your back.  https://www.rumi.org.uk/ Will runs the Mindfulness segment of the show with a 4/8 breathing technique. For Mind Body and Stoke segment the boys chat fasting, ketosis and energy supplies. Will runs through his fasting regime, while Liam is still trying to put down the Dorito's.  How fasting can affect your mood and impact home life. Again Duality being everything. The theme of altruism continues following last weeks chat with Tom Hewitt and how happiness and well-being can grow out of benevolence and love for others. Feeling happy for someone else's happiness. Can we bring this to a better understanding other people's points of view. Walking around in their shoes with good will and good vibes. Inspiring People Through Mentorship and Love of Surfing. Tom Hewitt MBE, founder and CEO of Surfers Not Street Children, fused his passion for helping street children with his love of surfing. This leadership coaching is using mentorship to create better lives for street children by teaching them how to surf. These inspiring projects in Mozambique and South Africa led him to take on more philanthropic humanitarian causes on the African continent. Later on, Hewitt was actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa where he acted as a peace monitor for the first free and fair elections.  My Key Takeaways Tom's story from his childhood, to adulthood, and to the present day is a remarkable one and well worth a listen! His privilege as he sees it gave him the opportunity to see such lack of privilege in others at an impressionable age. The influence from his dad, others, and the compassionate family in which he was born was a part of this.  Equality and human rights were a regular topic of conversation. This is where his passion was born and grew into something immense, developing his mantra ‘always remain true to your mandate!' Speaking with Tom was a valuable reminder to me for the tenacity needed for success: To never lose sight of our reason. The way in which we develop something of impact can of course change. There is a need for openness and flexibility but to waiver from the truth of your reason has the tendency to dilute impact greatly! This interview was so valuable for me as I can clearly relate this to where I've been successful and my reason being centre stage has been paramount at these times. In short, your reason is the spine of what you do. What a simple yet remarkable focus for us all! Being the workshop presentation, we basically saw excerpts of all the original music from Bombshell by Shaiman and Whitman that we have seen thus far, but we also saw a new original song called “On Lexington and 52nd Street” in its entirety which closed out the presentation. We also saw a cover of Colbie Caillat’s “Brighter Than the Sun,” but the tour de force number we got to see was “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from Gypsy. Investors are coming in tomorrow to watch the workshop presentation of Bombshell. The flame is hot between Julia Houston and Michael Swift, canoodling in the hallways outside the rehearsal room. Ivy Lynn arrives at rehearsal with her mother, Leigh Conroy, who just happens to be a veteran Broadway star in her own right. With only a day before the presentation, rehearsal pauses so that Ms. Conroy can wow the company of Bombshell with an impromptu rendition of “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.” Moments later, rehearsal pauses yet again when Michael Swift’s wife and son barge into rehearsal, causing Julia to storm out of rehearsal and leave rehearsal. Again: the day before the presentation. With all of the personal drama combined with the rehearsal building seemingly crumbling under their feet, Derek Wells wonders if the project is cursed. But Eileen Rand promises him that Bombshell will be a hit “because Marilyn deserved it.” Leigh Conroy won a Tony without drugs but it doesn’t look like Ivy Lynn will be able to claim the same accomplishment, taking sleeping pills the night before the presentation. She confides in Tom Hewitt that “her mother is doing everything she can to undermine her, and Karen Cartwright is being handed everything on a plate.”  The workshop begins with Ivy singing to a swelling imaginary orchestra, but it’s Karen who see dreaming of performing the role of Marilyn. With highlights of the fantasy sequences we’ve seen from the TV series’ first six episodes, we watch both the workshop and the watching of the workshop. Everyone seems to be a bit off of their game, with Ivy falling in a lift, Karen falling off of a platform, and Michael Swift falling head over heels in love with Julia. Amidst the drama, Karen Cartwright records a demo for Bobby Raskin across the street and wins over yet another potential critic with vocals. The next morning at 6am, she gets woken up by a call that Raskin wants to meet her but she skips it to perform in the workshop. The rest of the ensemble questions her decision but she says “she wouldn’t have missed it for the world.” After the workshop, Ivy confronts her mother by drawing a comparison between herself and Marilyn: both were sad and drug-addicted women whose mothers didn’t love them. Leigh tells her that she knows how difficult this business can be, and that even though wishes Ivy would be something else with her life, her day will come because she truly is talented. The team also contemplates the future of Bombshell - and whether Ivy Lynn or Michael Swift will be a part of that future at all... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

“Enter Mr. DiMaggio” premiered on February 20, 2012. It was written by Theresa Rebeck, and directed by Michael Mayer. It’s only three weeks until rehearsals begin for the workshop of the new Broadway-bound musical Bombshell. However, other than a great idea (that may or may not have been stolen from composer Tom Hewitt’s assistant Ellis) the writing team only have eight songs and half a book ready to go.  Up and upcoming ensemblist Ivy Lynn wonders if the only reason Derek gave her the part for the workshop is because she slept with them. He doesn’t seem to give her any reason to think otherwise, spending his energy on courting Karen for a role in the ensemble.  Meanwhile, the creative team hunts for the rest of the workshop’s cast. They think they’ve found their leading man Joe DiMaggio in Michael Swift, played by Will Chase. Since he is offer only, Eileen and Derek scout him out at an off- off- Broadway Show. But it turns out Michael Swift has a past with our lyricist Julia Houston - they had an affair five years ago!  Karen’s parents are worried about her (still) but she stands up to them, saying “being in the chorus of a workshop is so much bigger than many people get to do.” Dennis tells Tom that Derek and Ivy are dating. Julia confides in Tom about her affair, which Ellis overhears. But Ellis is making his own mistakes, stealing Julia’s notebook of ideas for Bombshell as well as sleeping with his friend/roommate/girlfriend Condola Rashad. Learn more about your ad choices.
