Originally aired as episode 198 on March 22, 2022. Trigger warning: This episode contains discussion of eating disorders. At the age of 25, Eva Noblezada is a two time Tony Award nominee, a Grammy Award winner, and a WhatsOnStage Award winning actress and singer. She starred as Kim in Cameron Mackintosh's London revival of Miss Saigon when she was 17 years old, and shortly after played Eponine in the West End revival of Les Misérables. Eva later reprised her performance as Kim in the first Broadway revival of Miss Saigon (also her Broadway debut). In 2019, she made her film debut in Yellow Rose starring alongside Lea Salonga, who originated the role of Kim in Miss Saigon. Eva originated the role of Eurydice in Hadestown on Broadway, and it's in Hadestown where she continues to lead, and take audiences “way down under the ground”. Eva speaks candidly about her past toxic relationship with the word “perfect”, how it affected her life as a 17 year old all on her own abroad, leading Cameron Mackintosh's London revival of Miss Saigon, and why she felt like she was “falling for years”. She opens up about living with anxiety, panic attacks, and body dysmorphia, and how she's learned to come back to herself at those times, and ask the important questions - “Are we in danger? - We're okay”. Talking about Hadestown, Eva shares her thoughts on Eurydice (and playing Eurydice), and her love for the “extra layer of consciousness” that can be seen throughout the whole show. In this episode, we talk about: Growing up Filipino Mexican, and discovering musical theater A strong work ethic, instilled by her father The mental and physical toll of an 8 show schedule Meeting Tara Rubin at the Jimmy Awards Pole dancing as fitness, and how society sexualizes women Her “all or nothing” way of life Connect with Eva: IG: @livevamaria Twitter: @EvaNoblezada Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. We were at the Luck premiere in LA to talk to the cast about the meaning behind good and bad luck. As Jane Fonda mentions, she hopes fans are less afraid of bad luck and understand that bad luck is part of good luck, and it's the opposite of the same coin, and there is a lot to be learned. Other cast members spoke about the magic and fun the movie brings for kids and adults -- and the importance of hope. Not to mention how the experience of making the film, for some, was a dream come true. Dave is back from vacation, and he's excited to talk about movies! We start with LUCK (2:17), a poorly thought out Skydance animated film about a young woman (Eva Noblezada) with bad luck trying to turn things around for herself and her young friend with the help of a black cat (Simon Pegg). Next we dig into Jae-rim Han's ambitious Korean disaster movie EMERGENCY DECLARATION (20:40), which is long, yet features a great ensemble, compelling themes, and tense action scenes. We wrap up with Scott Mann's anxiety-inducing thriller FALL (38:23), about two friends trapped at the top of a 2,000-foot radio tower. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about the 1989 neo noir GLEAMING THE CUBE, starring Christian Slater as a high school skateboarder investigating his adopted brother's murder.

MISS SAIGON COMPOSER: Claude-Michel Schonberg LYRICIST: Richard Maltby Jr & Alain Boublil BOOK: Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schonberg SOURCE: Giacomo Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly (1904) DIRECTOR: Nicholas Hytner CHOREOGRAPHER: Bob Avian PRINCIPLE CAST: Willy Falk (Chris), Jonathan Pryce (Engineer), Lea Salonga (Kim) OPENING DATE: Apr 11, 1991 CLOSING DATE: Jan 28, 2001 PERFORMANCES: 4,092 SYNOPSIS: In war torn Saigon, Chris, an American soldier, meets Kim, a sex worker lorded over by The Engineer, and begins a romance that produces a child. When Chris returns to America, Kim, dutifully and tragically, awaits his return to rescue her and his son. A discussion of the impact of Miss Saigon on the casting industry and on the AAPI community. A film documenting the casting of Lea Salonga in the leading role sheds light on the racist and patriarchal process facing the young actors auditioning for the protagonist and a survey of public correspondence from Actors Equity representatives, critics, and artists illustrates the racism present in the casting of white actor, Jonathan Pryce in the role of a Eurasian character. Postcolonial theorists have written extensively about the troubling implications of the show's commercial success. This chapter seeks to outline the shortcomings in the Asian and Eurasian representation in Miss Saigon while envisioning possible futures for racially-charged stories on the commercial stage. Join us this week for one of the more tragic musicals we have discussed to date; the 25th anniversary performance of Miss Saigon, which shouldn't come as a shock given it's subject topic and that it comes from acclaimed duo Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil of Les Misérables fame. As always we discuss the show in detail, but we also touch on a range of controversies attached within the history of the show, and how it played a role in changing theatre. With a phenomenal cast of Eva Noblezada and Jon Jon Briones, this is a fantastic show, and maybe the best way for Miss Saigon to be experienced, but will this be too much for Danny to take, or will he instead be moved by Kim's struggles and find solace in The Engineer's eccentricities? YELLOW ROSE features Eva Noblezada, who is joined by fellow Miss Saigon alum and Tony Award winner Lea Salonga. The film follows Rose Garcia, a 17-year-old Filipina American in Texas. When her mom is arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Rose undertakes a musical journey while facing deportation back to the Philippines. Inspired by the music of country musicians like Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Willie Nelson, the original composition accompanied by Noblezada’s captivating voice becomes the soundtrack of Rose’s wanderings akin to American westerns. YELLOW ROSE Director Diane Paragas joins us to talk about her warm-hearted tale of a young woman’s determination to fight back against the cruelty of a heartless immigration system while pursuing her own version of the American Dream deep in the heart of Texas with Austin’s music icon, Dale Watson at her side. From Memphis To Muscle Shoals & More. Una semana después, el día 19, llegará Bob's Back Pages: A Night Of Bob Dylan's Songs. J.D. Long Road Out Of Eden. Escuchar audio

Jeff and Phil welcome filmmaker Diane Paragas, writer/director of the new movie Yellow Rose. She talks about the long journey to bring her story to the screen, how she cast the film's incredible star Eva Noblezada, and why country music is so cinematic.
Eva Noblezada took Broadway by storm several years before being named one of the honorees of Forbes Magazine's prestigious 30 under 30 list for 2020. At the 'ripe old' age of 17, Eva was cast as Kim, the lead in the 2014 and 2017 revivals of MISS SAIGON, for which she earned her first Tony nomination for Best Actress in a musical. Tony nomination #2 was for her performance as the Eurydice in the hit musical HADESTOWN. And now, Eva's impressive list of credits includes the big screen. She makes her film debut in YELLOW ROSE - which follows a Filipino teenager in Texas, determined to pursue dreams of becoming a country music star. We cover a lot of ground in this open, honest, no holds barred conversation!
Yellow Rose, from director Diane Paragas, is about a Filipina girl who fell in love with country music while growing up in Texas. But her dreams of music stardom come under threat when her mother, who is undocumented, is taken in the night by an ICE raid.Like her protagonist, Paragas grew up Filipina-American in Texas. To tell the story of Rose Garcia (played by Eva Noblezada), she relied on her firsthand experience and research that included visits to ICE detention facilities. She shot the film amid the Trump Administration's policy of separating families at the border. And as timely as her film is, she tells host Eric Steuer that she's had the idea for Yellow Rose for 15 years.Yellow Rose is in theaters now. Everyone has a different path to success in the biz. Eva Noblezada was launched to musical theater superstardom at age 17 when her performance at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, a.k.a. the Jimmys, earned her the lead role in the West End revival of “Miss Saigon.” Before she could finish high school in North Carolina, Eva was navigating the joys—and high-pressure demands—of pursuing a childhood dream at the highest level. This candid interview includes plenty of advice for young and early-career artists: “I am very grateful to have had that inner voice that I listened to...I did know how to say no.” Eva has received Tony Award nominations for leading actress in a musical for both her Broadway appearances: 2017’s “Miss Saigon” and 2019’s Grammy Award-winning “Hadestown.” She now stars, and sings, in writer-director Diane Paragas’ hit Sony Pictures film “Yellow Rose,” the story of an undocumented Filipina teen turning trauma into country music. On October 9, Sony Pictures' Yellow Rose makes its theatrical debut on hundreds of screens across North America. To celebrate, the film's star, Eva Noblezada, and writer/director, Diane Paragas, join Keith on a brand new Southern Fried Asian. Diane starts off by talking about how growing up in Lubbock, TX informed parts of the film (2:30). She then talks about the process of casting both Eva (4:00) and fellow Broadway legend Lea Salonga (8:00). Eva joins the podcast at 9:35 and explains what it was about the Yellow Rose script that made her want to make it her feature film debut (10:30). Eva then talks about how much her upbringing in North Carolina did and didn't influence her performance (16:00), and Diane speaks to the film's political timeliness given that it was originally shot two years ago (20:00). The director is also adamant that her movie does not fall into the white savior trope despite some early criticisms (29:30) and goes on to explain her determination to tell a fundamentally Filipino American story (33:45). Finally, they share food memories from shooting in Austin, including Eva playing the Miss Saigon card at a Filipino bakery and Diane's revelation of a scene cut from the script involving adobo chicken fried steak (35:00). Last week, theatre insiders found on the website Federal Elections Commission that Nederlander Organization President James Nederlander had donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to elect Donald Trump. These contributions to Trump Victory and Donald J. Trump for President and ranging $2,700 to $50,000, were made in 2015 and 2016 at the same time as the Nederlander's nine Broadway theatres were running inclusive productions like On Your Feet!, Motown and Hamilton. How could an organization that gives home to these productions channel ticket sales into campaign contributions to Donald Trump? That's the question asked by Marla Louissaint. A 2015 Jimmy Award winner, Louissaint and other participants of the awards Award participants are asking how an organization that supports progressive stories could also fund the campaign of a president that promised to hurt Black and Brown people. Along with other Jimmy Award winners such as Kyle Selig and Eva Noblezada, Louissaint has created a Change.org petition calling on Jimmy Nederlander to make a statement about his campaign contributions. She joined me over the phone to talk about what the contributions mean to Black artists like her. EVA NOBLEZADA previously starred in Hadestown at National Theatre in London. Last fall, she shot the lead role in the upcoming indie, Yellow Rose. In 2017–18, Noblezada starred on Broadway in the title role of the revival of Miss Saigon, receiving a Tony nomination. Variety called her Broadway debut performance “entrancing.” She previously starred in the London revival of Miss Saigon and played Eponine in the West End revival of Les Misérables. Noblezada was a high school student in Charlotte, NC, when she was discovered by casting director Tara Rubin at the 2013 Jimmy Awards in New York City. AMBER GRAY stared in Hadestown (London’s National, Edmonton’s Citadel: Sterling Award, NYTW: Lortel nomination); Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 (Broadway: Theatre World Award, Kazino, Ars Nova); Daniel Fish’s production of Oklahoma! (Bard SummerScape); An Octoroon (TFANA, Soho Rep, P.S.122); and Taylor Mac’s A 24 Decade History of Popular Music: 1900’s–1950s (NYLA/UTR). Gray is a member of The TEAM and has codeveloped and performed in their Mission Drift, Primer for a Failed Superpower and the upcoming Reconstruction. Gray can always be found with political activist group and show Reverend Billy and The Church of Stop Shopping. Recent television: “Escape at Dannemora.” MFA: NYU.
Eva Noblezada stars as Eurydice in the 2019 Tony Award winning Best Musical, Hadestown, It’s rare that an actress bursts onto the Broadway scene with as much power and relevance as my guest today. Making her debut at age 21 in Miss Saigon, she received a Tony Award nomination as best leading actress in a musical — an honor that would be repeated just two seasons later for her current project, Hadestown. Eva's character, Eurydice, is open-hearted and self-reliant, vulnerable and tough, strong and wise and literally eternally hopeful. Knowing the actress a little bit off-stage, I’d ascribe the same attributes to the woman visiting Laura Heywood Interviews today.

You Guys, I said it the day it happened and I'll say it again: The chat I had with Miss Saigon's Eva Noblezada is one of the most memorable I've ever had. I can't put my finger on exactly why, but I found her to be SO charming and SO funny and SO downright personable that I just wanted to talk to her for hours. I won't give too much away here, but her story of being literally plucked from obscurity--with NO professional theatrical credits--to lead the company of the "Miss Saigon" revival is amazing. She is such a delight! Enjoy!
