Daniel SeidmanComposer & Co-LyricistDr. Daniel Seidman is a licensed clinical psychologist practicing in New York City. Dan started playing in a band at the age of 12 at the Cafe Wha in Greenwich Village. At the age of 15, he toured the U.S. and Canada playing Hammond organ for Chubby Checker. He completed a year as a composition major at the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1972-1973, and a B.A. in History from SUNY Binghamton. He received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1988, and subsequently joined the faculty at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) where he taught, practiced psychology, and did research for 30 years. He retired from Columbia in June of 2018. Fifth Avenue the musical originally grew out of Dan's combined interest in jazz and history. Discussions with a history professor Albert Fried about the immigrant experiences of the Irish, Jews, Italians and in more contemporary times, Blacks, Hispanics and the Chinese provided insight into the “dark side” of the American dream and its “underworld culture”. This is the story Fried tells in his book “The Rise and Fall of the Jewish Gangster in America” (Columbia University Press). After college, Dan began composing the music for "Fifth Avenue" while employed by the Shubert Organization in New York City. He met Susan Crawford, who wrote the book and co-wrote the lyrics for Fifth Avenue, in 1979. They were married in 1984 and are now the proud parents of two grown sons. Susan CrawfordBook Writer and Co-LyricistMy theater life began at 13 in my hometown's Shakespeare Festival. It evolved into much acting from then into my 30's. It soon overlapped with an interest in playwriting, and I finished my first play at 24. Eventually writing overcame acting for me. For that I studied with Arthur Kopit and John Guare; lyric writing at the ASCAP workshop, and with Sheila Davis, and Dorothy Fields. Around that time I co-developed the continuity for Ned Sherrin for “Only In America” songs by Leiber and Stoller. It ran at the Roundhouse in London, and was a distant antecedent to what became “Smoky Joe's Cafe.” “Dollars to Doughnuts, a Comedy for the 99%” was my master's thesis in the CCNY Graduate Writing Program where I studied with Arthur Kopit. It was a finalist in the O'Neill Playwriting Conference the year it was finished (under the title "Lotto"). For the summer 2022 season, it was selected by Theatre for the New City's “Dream Up” Festival where it was workshopped and is now being submitted for production. My one-act "Place Settings" was selected for the Chain Theatre's 2023 Winter One-Act Festival, and is also available for production.R.K. I was just sort of marinated in it.” He's since played many of the great villains, from Iago to the Grinch—Shakespeare and Shakespearean. Produced with Red Bull Theater. Music: Lance Horne.

Patrick Page has earned a reputation as one of the top classical actors in America today and one of the best at playing villains. He's played Iago in Othello, the Grinch, Marc Antony and Brutus in Julius Caesar, Scar in The Lion King, King Lear, and Hades in Hadestown to name very few of his roles in a decades long career. But Patrick has faced off against a classical villain off stage as well, having battled a depressive disorder ever since he was five years old. He talks about his experiences with bipolar depression and substance use disorder and his own efforts to get and remain healthy. He also discusses the emotional toll of taking on very heavy roles and playing them on stage while dealing with his mental health. It's a revealing conversation about mental health and about art.Learn more about Patrick by visiting his website, www.PatrickPageOnline.com. Can you imagine performing without hearing your own voice? Patrick Page began to lose his hearing completely and thought he was losing his voice because he couldn't hear himself and could only understand people by reading their lips. He was worried to test his hearing, until he remembered how important it was to embrace everything about yourself, similarly to the history behind his deep voice he began to accept what it was and leaned in to his uniqueness. Page now performs with Widex hearing aids as Hades in the Broadway's Hadestown as well as Apple TV+' Spirited, Schmigadoon, and more! Patrick Page departs from the underground of Hadestown at the end of the month. Patrick Page is a Grammy award-winning actor and playwright currently playing Hades in "Hadestown". He looks back on his early years growing up in Oregon and becoming a professional magician wherein he toured an illusion show and won awards. He shares how doing magic gave him the validation he needed and taught him about audiences and how to hold the stage. Patrick eventually got deeply interested in acting as a craft and pursued it as a career. While he decided to go for a Liberal Arts degree, he also spent his college years performing in plays. He shares his audition story for The Utah Shakespeare Festival despite being unqualified. Patrick shares how because he didn't go to acting school, he sort of learned by failing. He also talks about the first time someone told him his way of work was out of line and why he considers that a good thing. Apart from acting and writing, Patrick also has an acting studio in New York where he teaches. He talks about the importance of time management and knowing what you can do and offer, his hearing loss and the struggles that came along with it, including having to rely on muscle memory, and pursuing acting not because it's how you wish to be perceived but because it is who you are. Patrick Page is an actor and playwright known for his role in "In the Heights", "Flesh and Bone", and "The Good Wife". His other TV and film credits include "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit", "The Blacklist", "Evil", "Chicago P.D.", "Elementary", and "Spirited". He originated the roles of Norman Osborn and Green Goblin in "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark", The Grinch in Dr. Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical", and Hades in "Hadestown". Patrick's Broadway credits also include "Saint Joan", "Spring Awakening", "Beauty and the Beast", and "Lion King". His long list of stage credits also includes "Cymbeline" (New York Shakespeare Festival), "Richard II" (The Public Theatre), "The Sound of Music" (Carnegie Hall), "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (The Papermill Playhouse), and "Rex" (York Theatre). He's an Affiliated Artist with The Shakespeare Theater Company in DC and The Old Globe in San Diego, has taught acting in numerous programs and classes and is the founder of The Patrick Page Acting Studio where he also teaches. Apart from acting, Patrick is also a playwright. One of his plays, "Swansong", was nominated for Best New Play by The American Theatre Critics' Association and received many regional productions. In his early years, Patrick did magic and was honored by The International Brotherhood of Magicians as the “Best International Teen Illusionist” at their yearly convention in 1979. Patrick is also the recipient of The Grammy Award, The Tony Award nomination, the Helen Hayes Award, The William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theater, and The Emery Battis Award among others. This week on the pod we are incredibly honored to be joined by Amy Jo Jackson! Amy Jo co-hosts an incredible podcast with partner and former guest host Jeff Ronan called 'And Almost Starring', which breaks down a movie's casting and discusses who almost starred. Amy Jo has recently written a musical, so what a perfect guest for our 'In The Heights' discussion! As always, anytime we say a negative comment about the film, we have to drink! Fortunately, we recorded on a Friday night, not that Amy Jo has weekends at the moment. We discuss being a musical theater lover seeing this prescient piece on the screen in NYC, the stories, the characters, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The movie is directed by John Chu, written by Pulitzer winner Quiara Alegria Hudes who co-wrote the musical with Lin-Manuel, and stars Anthony Ramos, Melissa Barrera, Leslie Grace, Corey Hawkins, Gregory Diaz IV, Olga Merediz, Jimmy Smits, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Marc Antony and Mateo Gomez, featuring cameos by Christopher Jackson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Patrick Page and more. This episode is a "tale as old as time," as Broadway stars Paige Davis (Chicago, "Trading Spaces") & Tony Award-nominee Patrick Page (Hadestown, The Lion King, Spiderman: Turn off the Dark) join David to share their love of the Disney magic and discuss what exactly a Dole Whip is. Listen as this incredible married couple share the story of how they met during the national tour of Beauty & the Beast, and Patrick tells incredible stories from his time playing Disney characters over the years. In addition to their strong opinions on thrill rides and "It's a Small World," Patrick shares an incredible story of his first trip to Disneyland which he describes as a "breakthrough moment," and how a garage sale led to him memorizing the sounds of the Park, as well as having a map of Disneyland in his college dorm room; and Paige giggles about her first trip to Walt Disney World staying at the Grand Floridian and "never leaving the magic" despite a very traumatic experience waiting to go on an attraction. If you've ever wanted to hear one of Broadway's deepest voices deliver a speech from "The Haunted Mansion"...this is the episode for you. Bookwaves Erik Larson, author of The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky. Erik Larson is the author of several best-selling works of narrative non-fiction, including Dead Wake, In the Garden of Beasts and The Devil in the White City. His latest book takes us one year, from May 1940 to May 1941, a time which encompasses not only Winston Churchill's first year as Prime Minister of England, but also the Blitz, the often daily air raids by the Germans on London, Coventry and other cities, which began at the same time and ended almost to the day one year later. We follow the Churchill family's quotidian lives during that time, from watching to bombs to various wartime love affairs and break-ups, along with a look at how both the British and German governments worked during that year. In the interview, Erik Larson discusses his source material, and compares some of what went on then to what's happening today, particularly in terms of heroic and destitute patterns of leadership. Join us as we catch up as we converse and try and predict the future of live theater, talk about him missing his Hadestown cast, his favorite past roles and costumes, our opinions of Game of Thrones book verses film, his new podcast and most importantly- the future of live theater. When Patrick and I meet we always geek out over magic, it never fails. We are riveted by sleight of hand, and Patrick himself is a magician.
