This week, writers John Berendt and Taylor Mac discuss the Goodman Theatre's world-premiere stage musical adaptation of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Berendt is the author of the original book the musical is based on, and Mac wrote the book for the adaptation. Learn more about Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: The Musical, here. This conversation originally took place July 8, 2024 and was recorded live at the American Writers Museum. AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOME More about Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: The Musical Southern charm is bountiful in Savannah, Georgia. But behind polite smiles, the eccentric residents are filled with secrets and motives. When wealthy antiques dealer Jim Williams is accused of murder, the sensational trial uncovers hidden truths and exposes the fine line between good and evil—which sparks Lady Chablis and other Savannahians to change the city forever. The world-premiere stage musical adaptation of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil—John Berendt's 1994 blockbuster non-fiction book, a Pulitzer-Prize finalist that was on the New York Times Best-Seller list for 216 weeks—is realized at Goodman Theatre by creators MacArthur “Genius” Grantee Taylor Mac (book), Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown (music and lyrics) with choreography by Tanya Birl-Torres. Tony Award winner Rob Ashford directs a cast led by Tony- and Grammy-Award winning actor J. Harrison Ghee as The Lady Chablis; Tony Award nominee Tom Hewitt as Jim Williams; and Olivier Award nominee Sierra Boggess as Emma Dawes. JOHN BERENDT was born and raised in Syracuse, New York. He attended Harvard, where he majored in English and wrote for the Harvard Lampoon. Upon graduation he was hired by Esquire magazine—first as an editor, then as a monthly columnist. Later, he became the editor of New York Magazine. It was during a trip to the South in the mid-1980s that he discovered Savannah—a cloistered, inward-looking garden city that basked on the Georgia coast, reveling in its own peculiarities and giving not a thought to the outside world. He was enchanted and began writing about the city and its people in what would eventually become the non-fiction book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. TAYLOR MAC is a MacArthur Fellow, a Pulitzer Prize Finalist, a Tony Award Nominee (for Best Play), and the recipient of the Kennedy Prize (with Matt Ray), the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a Guggenheim, a Drama League Award, a NY Drama Critics Circle Award, two Obie's, two Bessies, and the first American to receive the International Ibsen Award. Mac is the author of Joy and Pandemic (Huntington Theater); The Hang (with Matt Ray); Gary, A Sequel to Titus Andronicus; A 24-Decade History of Popular Music; Hir; The Fre, The Walk Across America For Mother Earth, The Lily's Revenge; The Young Ladies Of; and The Be(A)st of Taylor Mac. The documentary Taylor Mac's A 24-Decade History of Popular Music recently premiered on HBO to critical acclaim.

This episode was recorded live at the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan on October 9, 2023. It is a conversation with creative and cast members of the Broadway musical, Harmony. They include book writer and lyricist Bruce Sussman, and performers Chip Zien, Julie Benko, Sierra Boggess, and Danny Kornfeld. The narrative of Harmony is set in the 1920s and 30s in Germany, a deeply unsettling time in history, and still the central characters found harmony, not only in the melodic sense but also as a diverse group coming together in partnership. It's an inspiring idea for us all to seek ways to live harmoniously with others. After all, harmony occurs when different sounds blend together.I hope you enjoy the following interview, and please check out the links below to two songs from the cast recording of Harmony. With the recent passing of Lucy Simon, playing the role of Lily Craven in "The Secret Garden" is both special and bittersweet for Sierra Boggess and the rest of the cast. Despite people telling her to switch to vocal performance, Sierra stayed as a musical theatre major so she can “graduate a triple threat.” She recalls how she got to do Phantom in Las Vegas which changed the trajectory of her career. She considers leaning into acting as the most important aspect no matter what you're doing and always considers her character's need at the moment to help her with how she's going to sing or dance. Being a part of "The Secret Garden" now playing at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, Sierra talks about the different messages of the show, her relationship with Lucy and how they're honoring her, and the contrast between working with adults and kids. She also gets real about her beliefs, her relationship with fans, knowing what your truth is and why you shouldn't let anyone take your love of performing away. Sierra Boggess is an Olivier-nominated actress who made her Broadway debut in 2007, originating the role of Ariel in "The Little Mermaid" wherein she received Drama Desk and Drama League nominations. She's also best known for her re-inventing the coveted role of Christine Daae in Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera". In fact, Lord Webber himself went on record to say that she's the best Christine. Her other stage credits include "It Shoulda Been You", "School of Rock", "Master Class", "Love, Loss, and What I Wore", and "Music in the Air". She also starred in London West End's "Les Miserables", and "Love Never Dies". Currently, Sierra is playing Lily Craven in "The Secret Garden" at Los Angeles' Ahmanson Theatre. The maiden voyage of a cruise ship starring a boatload of musical theater stars — like Tony Award-winners Laura Benanti, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming and Lena Hall — will set sail next spring. The Broadway Cruise — heading roundtrip from New York City to Bermuda, from March 31-April 5, 2023 — will also feature Tony nominees Joshua Henry, Taylor Louderman and Jeremy Jordan, as well as Broadway favorites Randy Rainbow and Sierra Boggess. Producers promise “intimate and grand scale shows and cabarets from Broadway's coolest talent” as well as “tips and techniques from some of the best and brightest creative talent working today.” Tony-nominated scenic designer David Korins will discuss his creative process when designing settings for the stage and Tony-nominated choreographer Kelly Devine will discuss the art of the dance. Chris Jahnke will serve as music director. The cruise will borrow the Norwegian Gem, which accommodates 2,000 people. Cabin prices begin at $1,165 per person. The trip was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. Cruise ships were an early source of outbreaks at the start of the pandemic. The CDC issued a no-sail order in March 2020, prompting a standstill that ended in June 2021 as cruise ships began to leave U.S. ports with new health and safety requirements. All guests 12 and over — and all artists and crew — aboard The Broadway Cruise are required to be fully vaccinated and present proof of vaccination to board. "Once upon a time... later..."This week, Drew and Cassie are joined by Cassie's brother, Matthew, to explore the deconstruction of fairy tales in Act II of Into the Woods. In Act I, the Baker and his Wife collected the cow as white as milk, the cape as red blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold. They successfully lifted the curse on their house and now they have a baby, as they've wished for so long. Now, they are living "happily ever after," as are Cinderella, Jack, Little Red Riding Hood, and our other characters... or are they? Act II explores the consequences of the characters' actions in Act I in a fresh, new way. We dig in deep, discussing the complexity of Stephen Sondheim's score, the "bean theme," the many parallels between Act I and Act II, the Baker/Cinderella ship, the Jack/Little Red ship, the word "nice," some of the changes made before the show opened on Broadway, more "realization songs," dwarfs vs. dwarves, and much more that we can't reveal without getting too spoilery! What is Cassie's mysterious childhood memory of Act II? Which role was Matthew going to play in Drew's dream childhood backyard production of Into the Woods? What fascinating insights will Matthew offer regarding the Granny/Giant double casting? You'll have to listen to find out!Throughout the episode, we reference the following productions of Into the Woods. As always, we recommend watching before listening to the episode, but you definitely don't need to watch all of these! The original Broadway production is the one to watch for sure!- The 1987 original Broadway production, professionally filmed in 1989 (available on Broadway HD), starring Bernadette Peters as the Witch, Chip Zien as the Baker, Joanna Gleason as the Baker's Wife, Tom Aldredge as the Narrator/Mysterious Man, and Kim Crosby as Cinderella- The 2002 Broadway Revival production, starring Vanessa Williams as the Witch, Stephen DeRosa as the Baker, Kerry O'Malley as the Baker's Wife, John McMartin as the Narrator/Mysterious Man, and Laura Benanti as Cinderella- The 2010 West End Regent's Park production (available on Broadway HD), starring Hannah Waddingham as the Witch, Mark Hadfield as the Baker, Jenna Russell as the Baker's Wife, Billy Boyle as the Mysterious Man, and Helen Dallimore as Cinderella- The 2012 Central Park production, an American recreation of the West End Regent's Park production, starring Donna Murphy as the Witch, Denis O'Hare as the Baker, Amy Adams as Cinderella, Chip Zien as the Mysterious Man, and Jessie Mueller as Cinderella- The 2019 Hollywood Bowl production, starring Patina Miller as the Witch, Skyler Astin as the Baker, Sutton Foster as the Baker's Wife, Anthony Crivello as the Mysterious Man, and Sierra Boggess as CinderellaMusic: Through The Woods by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com
"Do you know what you wish? Are you certain what you wish it what you want?"Have we said "we're excited" enough yet? Probably, but we're going to say it approximately fifty more times. Drew and Cassie are joined by Drew's sister, Daurie, to work our way through the complexities of Act I of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into the Woods. This 1987 musical tells the tale of a Baker and his Wife who learn that their next-door neighbor, a Witch, was once wronged by the Baker's father and so she placed a spell on them so they could never have a child. In order to break this spell, the Witch sends them "into the woods" to collect various iconic fairy tale objects. Act I of this musical weaves together the plots of four fairy tales: Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel. Along the way, we talk about the show's themes, the double-cast roles, Jack and Little Red's ages, sibling rivalry, the varied portrayals of the Baker and his relationship with the Baker's Wife, Milky White, Cassie's cues from the production she assistant stage managed, the Baker's Wife's "celebrity list," the show's choreography, Daurie's experience playing Rapunzel, the brilliance of this interpretation of Cinderella, and much more, including a plethora of our favorite quotes!Throughout the episode, we reference the following productions of Into the Woods. Mystery. Hidden identities. Con Men. Secret sting operations. Money vanishing into thin air. Even death plagues the players of Rebecca, the musical. What was supposed to be a big Broadway musical, complete with a spectacle that included burning a house to the ground, turned into one hell of a true crime story, where everyone got burnt. Rebecca was the dream of Ben Sprecher, an old-school producer looking for his big break on Broadway. It was based on the famous gothic novel by Daphne du Maurier and the subsequent Oscar-winning film by Alfred Hitchock. But Hitchcock could never have dreamt up something this crazy. Episode 1 features interviews with Oscar winner Christopher Hampton, Sierra Boggess, Michael Kunze, Francesca Zambello, Tripp Phillips, Robert Viagas, Michael Riedel, and Peter Bogyo. LOOKOUT! It's one of those special days in The Batter's Box as Sierra Boggess joins us for Episode 95! For nearly a decade and a half, Boggess has cemented a standing as one of the best players in the game here on Broadway through her brilliant ability to bring iconic characters to life on stage, powerful singing voice, and inspiring disposition that embodies the good stuff in show business. Whether it was originating the role of Ariel in the Broadway production of The Little Mermaid, her portrayal of Christine Daaé in both the Broadway and London 25th Anniversary productions of The Phantom Of The Opera, or her other memorable performances in School Of Rock, It Shoulda Been You, Master Class, Lés Miserables, and Love Never Dies, her accomplishments on Broadway and The West End are on par with any hitter who's dominated in both the American and National League. Ironically, some of Boggess' success on stage is rooted in her own athletic background, as she grew up as a competitive figure skater in her native Denver. Despite having to put the skates aside in her early teens, her passion for the sport has never wavered, and the values it taught her have truly helped shape her into the All-Star actress she is today. Over the past year, she's rediscovered those skills on the ice and this week, she takes host Al Malafronte through this incredible chapter of joy and the intense work she's put into it. She also discusses some of her eventual aspirations in the sport, which may just include competing on the professional level! One of the ultimate testaments to a performer either on stage or at the stadium is their mental fortitude, and some of Boggess' stories behind her success on Broadway fully back up that notion in this conversation. Her ability to set herself apart as a star player in order to achieve her dreams is on par with anyone we've ever spoken with. One might even view her as a master "hitter" when it comes to her technique, mindfulness, and ability to evaluate scouting reports before going into an audition room. On the subject of hitters, it's fitting that Boggess views herself as a “DH” if she were to take on a position in baseball, and also has some great memories of her hometown Colorado Rockies! If you're in New York, be sure to catch Sierra Boggess in her upcoming concert series at 54 Below from September 8-11, as she helps ring in Broadway's triumphant return this fall! Broadway’s Ariel, Sierra Boggess (“The Little Mermaid,” “School of Rock,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “It Shoulda Been You”), is the guest on this episode of “E-Ticket to Broadway” and shares just how much she’s always loved Disney, especially the sidekicks. As a kid Sierra never wanted to be Cinderella—she wanted to be Gus Gus, and has always loved “The Sword in the Stone” and Madam Mim and is ready to bring her to Broadway. Listen as she recalls going to Walt Disney World for the first time when she was six years old and loving the Haunted Mansion and taking a photo with Goofy—to then going to Toyko Disney Sea and Disneyland Paris as an adult. Sierra beautifully explains what makes a Disney Park so magical and “how they do everything they can to keep you invested in the magic," and shares a really wonderful observation that the Parks may be more deeply appreciated by the "young at heart." Sierra has a lot of love--from her must-do attractions including the Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones, The Matterhorn and/or Expedition Everest; to her memories of her Broadway debut in "The Little Mermaid"; to "Brave" and learning about never giving up from watching Disney movies." She recounts stories with Jodi Benson, Jonathan Freeman, and Sherie Rene Scott, and shares her dream of performing in "Disney on Ice." This episode features a very intense conversation on Mouse Ears, and a very strong opinion of "It's a Small World," and the sounds of Britney Spears singing classic Disney tunes as only Sierra Boggess can do. Sierra Boggess is a theater actress and singer, best known for originating the role of Ariel in The Little Mermaid on Broadway and for her multiple appearances as Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera. She also originated the role of Rebecca Steinberg in the 2015 Broadway production of It Shoulda Been You, and performed the role of school principal Rosalie Mullins in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical adaptation of School of Rock. Other roles include Love Never Dies (Christine Daaé); Master Class (Sharon Graham); Les Misérables (Fantine); and Love, Loss and What I Wore (Various Characters). If you haven’t seen Sierra perform, then, well, you’ve missed out on seeing someone do exactly what they are supposed to be doing with their life. Her way with a song, a lyric, or just an introduction is as entertaining, uplifting or as heartbreaking as she wants . . . and she makes it all seem so easy. It’s no wonder why Disney tapped her for The Little Mermaid. Hear Sierra talk about all that, as well as … The big risk she took to get the role of Ariel and what put her over the edge in the room. How she stays positive when the business disappoints her, through no fault of her own. Her style of working with writers on new musicals and how that has changed over the years. (And she’s currently in Atlanta on a pre-Broadway tryout of Ever After!) Why she created “Light Lessons” for artists and everyone. (Click here to check them out. I’ve got a set on my desk.) Broadway's Sierra Boggess and I gather in the Rosalie dressing room at the Winter Garden Theatre and discuss the greatest gift of our biggest career disappointments — learning that we are not defined by our work. We are so much more. We discuss and explore a plethora practical tools and strategies to get through disappointment and difficult experiences. Sierra shares her network and team in NYC and recalls Tyne Daly’s advice that “Theatre is a team sport.” We then go into a wonderful discussion about finding our purpose and how freeing that is. Finally, Sierra gets REAL. I’m talking, down right vulnerable about how she came to learn her personal mantra “You are enough, you are so enough, it’s unbelievable how enough you are.” May 16th Wednesday @ 5PM Facebook Live with Sierra and Me! Jonathan Slavin was born on a marine base in North Carolina, and grew up in rural Pennsylvania. A bit of a shy weirdo to his peers, he found his voice when he was cast in his first play. After high school, he landed in New York and performed in some truly abysmal theater, before being cast to play the sexually confused protagonist in “The Best of Schools” at Ubu Rep. From there, he moved to Lincoln Center and then Broadway in Wendy Wasserstein’s “The Sisters Rosensweig”, to Dallas to do “Six Degrees of Separation”(a production that was visited and subsequently cited by the Dalllas Vice Squad), and finally to Los Angeles, to appear in the West Coast premiere of Larry Kramer’s “The Destiny of Me.” After a few months playing a string of “insert occupation here” Guy television guest stars(Flower Delivery Guy, Fish and Chips Guy, Computer Tech Guy) Slavin graduated to more memorable roles. He has appeared as a series regular on Better Off Ted, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Mission Control, Union Square, and voiced Ogo, a neurotic and slightly deranged robot on the cartoon Robot and Monster. He has recurred on Better With You, Family Tools, and My Name is Earl, to name a few. Recent and notable guest stars include Legit, Suburgatory, Castle, Grey’s Anatomy, Weeds, The Glades, and Perception. His feature film credits include Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day, Dirty Girl, Hard Pill, and My Mother’s Hairdo. Slavin is an activist, dedicating much of his time to animal rights, and is a longtime vegan and animal rescuer. As a gay man, he is equally committed to LGBT rights, and has twice participated in the California Aids Ride, a nearly 600 mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, raising funds for HIV services provided by the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. ______________________________________ The Boyz talk with the new Associate Director for American Diabetes Association in Central Washington, Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho Julie Lockhart. When Sierra Boggess made her Broadway debut in 2008 in the title role of the hit Disney musical 'The Little Mermaid,' she became an overnight not just star, but also idol, role model, sensation even in a way that happens so rarely to person appearing on a Broadway stage for the first time. She, of course, went on to star in the Broadway revival of 'Master Class opposite' Tyne Daily and as Christine Daae in London’s West End production of 'Love Never Dies,' Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sequel to the Phantom of the Opera. I first got to witness the greatness that is Sierra Boggess on stage in last season’s 'It Shoulda Been You'—a show that I found to be so special for a variety of reasons that we’ll get into in this interview. She is currently starring as Rosalee Mullins, the sort of tight lipped, rulsey principal in the brand new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical 'School of Rock'—a show that frequent listeners know that I am completely obsessed with. I love this interview for a lot of reasons. Not the lease of which being that we did the interview in Sierra’s dressing room about 90 minutes prior to an evening performance and I think it really captures the bustle and energy of the backstage of a Broadway theater just before showtime. At one point we’re interrupted—good naturedly—by a stage manager, The charming Alex Brightman makes a small cameo, oh and then there was the moment Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber himself spoke over the PA system. Anyway, Sierra is a force of nature and just as brilliant as you imagine she is. It was so much fun to chat with here. Enjoy our conversation!

Now the 28-year-old is about to return to Broadway as one of the most in-demand ingénues of her age.
