This week, writers John Berendt and Taylor Mac discuss the Goodman Theatre's world-premiere stage musical adaptation of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Berendt is the author of the original book the musical is based on, and Mac wrote the book for the adaptation. Learn more about Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: The Musical, here. This conversation originally took place July 8, 2024 and was recorded live at the American Writers Museum. AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOME More about Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: The Musical Southern charm is bountiful in Savannah, Georgia. But behind polite smiles, the eccentric residents are filled with secrets and motives. When wealthy antiques dealer Jim Williams is accused of murder, the sensational trial uncovers hidden truths and exposes the fine line between good and evil—which sparks Lady Chablis and other Savannahians to change the city forever. The world-premiere stage musical adaptation of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil—John Berendt's 1994 blockbuster non-fiction book, a Pulitzer-Prize finalist that was on the New York Times Best-Seller list for 216 weeks—is realized at Goodman Theatre by creators MacArthur “Genius” Grantee Taylor Mac (book), Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown (music and lyrics) with choreography by Tanya Birl-Torres. Tony Award winner Rob Ashford directs a cast led by Tony- and Grammy-Award winning actor J. Harrison Ghee as The Lady Chablis; Tony Award nominee Tom Hewitt as Jim Williams; and Olivier Award nominee Sierra Boggess as Emma Dawes. JOHN BERENDT was born and raised in Syracuse, New York. He attended Harvard, where he majored in English and wrote for the Harvard Lampoon. Upon graduation he was hired by Esquire magazine—first as an editor, then as a monthly columnist. Later, he became the editor of New York Magazine. It was during a trip to the South in the mid-1980s that he discovered Savannah—a cloistered, inward-looking garden city that basked on the Georgia coast, reveling in its own peculiarities and giving not a thought to the outside world. He was enchanted and began writing about the city and its people in what would eventually become the non-fiction book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. TAYLOR MAC is a MacArthur Fellow, a Pulitzer Prize Finalist, a Tony Award Nominee (for Best Play), and the recipient of the Kennedy Prize (with Matt Ray), the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a Guggenheim, a Drama League Award, a NY Drama Critics Circle Award, two Obie's, two Bessies, and the first American to receive the International Ibsen Award. Mac is the author of Joy and Pandemic (Huntington Theater); The Hang (with Matt Ray); Gary, A Sequel to Titus Andronicus; A 24-Decade History of Popular Music; Hir; The Fre, The Walk Across America For Mother Earth, The Lily's Revenge; The Young Ladies Of; and The Be(A)st of Taylor Mac. The documentary Taylor Mac's A 24-Decade History of Popular Music recently premiered on HBO to critical acclaim.

With his signature voice and charismatic presence, legendary actor Keith David has starred in almost 400 projects, including film, television, stage and interactive media. From devils to angels, David has played just about every kind of role you can think of – including voice work in Disney and Manga animation, to roles in classic horror and comedy, to small time crooks and mega-church preachers. His acting range is incomparable, and as a classically trained actor, he's a firm believer that talent alone is not enough – you must put in the hard work and training to be successful. That's why he's won three Emmys, an NAACP Image Award, as well as being nominated for a Tony Award. But how has he remained passionate about acting for so many years, while delivering grace and splendor to each character he portrays? Join us as I SEE U's Eddie Robinson chats with one of Hollywood's most sought-after performers, Keith David. The Harlem-born veteran actor shares family stories and insight into his very first movie role—the 1982 horror classic, The Thing. He also reminisces about his relationship with the church, and how he had considered becoming a minister at one point in his career. He channeled that love of ministry into his character, Bishop James Greenleaf, for a powerful performance in the Oprah-produced drama series, Greenleaf. David shows no sign of slowing down as he reveals to I SEE U the secret to his remarkable longevity as a successful actor in a competitive and ever-evolving entertainment industry.

From The Land Down Under to The Big Apple, this singer-songwriter, pianist, writer and comedian just released his new album, Beetlejuice: The Demos! The Demos! The Demos!, and is showing other Australians that it’s possible to make the leap and find yourself working on a Broadway musical (or two). Eddie Perfect is an Australian singer-songwriter, pianist, comedian, writer and actor. He is now also a Tony Award Nominee after receiving a nomination for best original score for Beetlejuice the musical. During the same season, Eddie also wrote songs and vocal arrangements for King Kong on Broadway. Eddie is a four time nominee and two time Helpmann Award winner for his work in Australia. In 2009, his biographical musical comedy Shane Warne: The Musical won the 2009 Helpmann Award for Best New Australian Work. This production also received a Victorian Premier's Literary Award and a Green Room Award. Eddie has recorded solo albums and written and performed in numerous cabaret shows, including Songs from the Middle with the Brodsky Quartet. Following his songwriting career on Broadway, Eddie returned to Australia where he waits to star as Franklin Hart Jr. in Dolly Parton's musical 9 to 5 once the COVID-19 pandemic subsides. And most recently he released his fifth album, Beetle Juice: The demos! The demos! The demos!, a new album of demos created for his Tony-nominated score to Beetlejuice. The album also contains 17 cut songs that will be new to everyone's ears. During our conversation, Eddie candidly talks about his process for creating. He describes “kind of a weird trance I go into when I make stuff, where I really think about what it would be like to be in the audience watching it.” He focuses on what he wants an audience to think, feel, or learn in a particular moment. Reflecting on the process for Beetlejuice, Eddie shares that he wrote the opening number for the show over a 5 year period. He also recalls it was during their first previews that Beetlejuice really started building it’s cult like fan base. And it was this fanbase that served as some of the inspiration behind releasing the Beetlejuice demos in the first place. Eddie was blown away by the unique creative responses many fans of the show have had, saying he’s “never experienced anything like that.” His new demo album serves to broaden the universe of Beetlejuice a little bit “for those fans that do really riff off the work.”   In the episode, we talk about:  The intense Beetlejuice fandom  The Beetlejuice preview when they knew the show had struck a chord with people  Reading the reviews of the original 1988 film to cheer them up after their DC reviews  Australia being an importer of Broadway shows  Being in a period of his life now where he is confident with his writing and his process  Working with the cast and creatives of Beetlejuice Juggling work on Beetlejuice and King Kong simultaneously Connect with Eddie: Listen to Beetlejuice: The Demos! Steven Boyer (Hustlers, Orange is the New Black, Chicago: Fire, The Blacklist, and Tony-Award Nominee for Hand to God), Nick's old partner in both committing and fighting crime on their beloved little comedy Trial & Error, hops on the phone from his place in Brooklyn and tells a beautiful story about what led to his conversion to Reform Judaism.  Born in Columbus, Ohio to a loving Presbyterian family that did not practice weekly, or even monthly, Steven found himself at a young age seeking out a deeper religious connection than what he had at hand.  He spent time with Evangelicals, and time as an Agnostic Secular Humanist, but his life transformed emotionally, practically and spiritually upon meeting the woman whom he would marry.  Feeling no pressure from her or her family, Steven began to feel a resonant kinship with the synagogue at which his wife's family attended service, and he decided to convert when they were engaged.  Steven talks affectingly about the Jewish concepts of dayenu and tikkun olam, and he and Nick reminisce about how they were together in Vancouver when Steven led a Passover Seder for the first time (Jewish fans of the show may find a "bone" of contention in the story wink wink).  It's a warm, heartfelt, thoughtful and loving story, and it was an honor to listen to an old friend tell it. Something I need your help with: Let me know if you jam with the Peanut Butter Podcast. Steven Twitter: @SteveBoyer5000  Steven Instagram: @SteveBoyer5000Twitter: @nicholasdagosto #GodsDelicateShow Instagram: @nicholasdagosto #GodsDelicateShowOfficial Website: nicholasdagosto.comMusic by Sean Whalen, Art by Alexandra Delano
