What is your relationship with the planet we live on? As a human rights lawyer and environmental activist, Nonette Royo is trying to make us all live more symbiotically with nature. She works hard to listen to indigenous peoples around the world to help them control the land they live on and have a voice in policies and decisions that combat climate change. Nonette sits down with Chris to help us better understand how native traditions can inform all of our lives and why fighting for land rights may be one of the most important policies to mitigate climate change.

Dr. Daniel Royo wrote his PhD dissertation on looking at the Biblical history of those inside the covenant versus those outside the covenant. In this conversation, Dr. Royo takes us back to Isaac and Ishmael and we explore the Biblical account for secrets that can tell us more about God and how He relates to those inside and outside of His covenant.
We continue our conversation with Dr. Daniel Royo on the history of the interactions between those of inside and outside of God's convenient. In this episode Dr. Royo takes us through time and shows us a repeated pattern of God's grace in using these two groups to bless each other. Perhaps this can help understand how God would want us to relate to current events?

For any of us working in sustainability, land guardianship is crucial to climate action. Yet the ways to support stewards of the land - Indigenous peoples and local communities - are not obvious. I learned so much from Nonette Royo from the Tenure Facility: she grew up seeing violence and land grabs in her home in the Philippines, and became a human rights lawyer to protect the protectors of land. THE IMPACT. Nonette Royo: - Is a human rights and environment lawyer, committed to supporting the aspirations of Indigenous and local peoples and helping forest communities protect their people and land - Is currently Executive Director at The International Land and Forest Tenure Facility, an organization focused on securing land and forest rights for Indigenous Peoples and local communities - Gave a TED talk on why Indigenous forest guardianship is crucial to climate action - Has over 30 years experience advising funds dedicated to Indigenous Peoples and local communities in forest and climate programmes - Co-founded and led the Samdhana Institute and set up several NGOs focusing on advancing Indigenous Peoples and women's legal rights, helping design and implement funding portfolios for local communities and Indigenous Peoples in the global south THE JOURNEY. In our conversation, we explore: - Origins of Nonette's life and work in the Philippines: a "land of promise" and broken promises - Becoming a lawyer and the challenge for Indigenous communities: traditions that don't believe in land ownership in a capitalist system that demands deeds and titles - Bringing alternative law solutions to bridge the two worlds: through basic human rights, ancestral domain law, and Indigenous People's Collective Titles - The hardest part of this work: bringing communities together to heal stories and land - The key to climate change: land rights in conversation with stewards of the land As always, send any feedback and ideas to impactjourneypodcast at gmail dot com.
As our Year of the Zebra focus on rare diseases continues, we're putting several neurological conditions in the spotlight whose symptoms include neck pain, vertigo, swallowing issues, memory trouble and many more: idiopathic syringomyelia; idiopathic scoliosis; and the Arnold-Chiari Syndrome type 1 caused variously by cavities in the spinal cord and brain herniation. Fortunately, our guide is one of the world's leading experts in this area, Dr. Miguel Bautista Royo-Salvador, Director of the Institut Chiari & Syringomyelia Escoliosis de Barcelona, and President of the Chiari and Scoliosis and Syringomyelia Foundation. In his fifty-plus years of focus on these conditions, Dr. Royo-Salvador has alternated between research activity and clinical practice in which he applies a treatment method he developed called the Filum System. Inventing this new approach was sparked by a patient who experienced very little improvement from what was the standard surgical treatment at the time. “I have come to the conclusion that an abnormally intense caudal traction of the entire central nervous system is the cause of the descent of the cerebellar herniation in Chiari Syndrome type 1, as well as of scoliosis and syringomyelia and others. To speak figuratively, it's like a pull from below on the whole central nervous system,” he explains to host Michael Carrese. After 2,100 procedures with a subjective improvement rate of 95%, Dr. Royo-Salvador and the Institute are working to broaden awareness of this minimally invasive approach. Tune-in for an educational journey into these rare conditions and a proven technique to relieve patient suffering.Mentioned in this episode: https://institutchiaribcn.com/
This week on Dopey! We are joined by legendary actor of the stage and screen, Andre Royo. Andre recounts his journey growing up in the Bronx and inhabiting arguably the greatest heroin addict in television history playing 'Bubbles' on the Wire. Dopey Podcast is the world's greatest podcast on drugs, addiction and dumb shit. Chris and I were two IV heroin addicts who loved to talk about all the coke we smoked, snorted and shot, all the pills we ate, smoked, all the weed we smoked and ate, all the booze we consumed and all the consequences we suffered. After making the show for 2 and a half years, Chris tragically relapsed and died from a fentanyl overdose. Dopey continued on, at first to mourn the horrible loss of Chris, but then to continue our mission - which was at its core, to keep addicts and alcoholics company. Whether to laugh at our time in rehab, or cry at the worst missteps we made, Dopey tells the truth about drugs, addiction and recovery. We continually mine the universe for stories rife with debauchery and highlight serious drug taking and alcoholism. We also examine different paths toward addiction recovery. We shine a light on harm reduction and medication assisted treatment. We talk with celebrities and nobodies and stockpile stories to be the greatest one stop shop podcast on all things drugs, addiction, recovery and comedy!

Founder of Hip Hop Building Blockshttps://hiphopbuildingblocks.com/Born and raised in New York Eric Royo grew up in an era where Hip Hop thrived and was at the forefront of everything cool, expressive and revolutionary. He gravitated towards the music because it gave him the feeling of being free and open to express himself in whatever way he chose. The beats, the rhythms, the lyrics all called to Eric in a way that was magnetic and electric. At first just freestyling in the parks of NYC he eventually formed a group with other MC's, producing beats, writing raps, and performing shows. Hip Hop gave him a voice and an identity in a way nothing else had before. As he navigated his way through a complicated music industry he eventually began to find his footing running Hip Hop workshops with youth groups. This natural evolution transformed his career from Emcee to educator. Over the next 12 years Eric taught in elementary schools and continually found ways to introduce Hip Hop culture to his students. Through this desire to spread the real and honest narrative of the culture, Hip Hop Building Blocks was formed. By teaching the origins, influences, and history of the culture it serves as a model for students to build and strengthen their own school community. Engaging students in the elements of Hip Hop (DJing, Emceeing, Graffiti Breakin' and Knowledge of self) encourages them to represent their identity, giving young people a voice and a platform for self-expression. With the core principles of peace, love, unity, and having fun, Hip Hop Building Blocks is a unique approach to social emotional learning that is experiential, engaging, and accessible to all. Indigenous communities have looked after their ancestral forests for millennia, cultivating immense amounts of knowledge on how to protect, nourish and heal these vital environments. Today, 470 million Indigenous people care for and manage 80 percent of the world's biodiversity -- yet their legal rights to these lands are inexplicit and subject to exploitation by illegal loggers, miners and companies. Human rights lawyer Nonette Royo describes how her team at the Tenure Facility, an organization that provides legal assistance to Indigenous people by taking their land rights battles to court, will help these communities secure and defend 50 million hectares of forests over the next five years. (This ambitious plan is a part of the Audacious Project, TED's initiative to inspire and fund global change.)
