Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world, with an average of 98 million cups consumed in the UK every day, according to the British Coffee Association. In moderation, there are plenty of benefits to be gained from drinking coffee, but there can also be some negative side effects, in particular due to its caffeine content. Decaf is an alternative, but is it really healthier? Our bodies don't all process caffeine in the same way. It also depends on our sleep quality and the dose of caffeine. What effects can caffeine have on our bodies? How is decaf actually produced? What about the benefits of drinking coffee? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Felisha Rogers joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to talk about the services provided by Braveheart Children's Advocacy Center (CAC), child abuse, child trafficking, and donations. At Braveheart Children's Advocacy Center, a dedicated team is making a real difference for children and teens facing trauma from abuse or witnessing crimes. Previously, victims endured the pain of recounting their story to multiple agencies. Today, Braveheart brings together experts from law enforcement, child services, and the court system, so young people need only speak once in a safe setting. The conversation is recorded to ensure accuracy and spare the child further emotional strain. Since opening in 1999, Braveheart has expanded its caring approach across several Illinois counties, guiding families with advocacy, education, and unwavering support throughout the investigative process. Braveheart's mission: "Our mission is to strengthen our community's response to child abuse through prevention, intervention and advocacy." Braveheart CAC relies on donations and grants to provide vital services to children of physical and sexual abuse. Visit "Donate to Braveheart" to contribute. Donations needed to support children and families during the difficult process The Braveheart Children's Advocacy Center is in need of donations to support children and families navigating difficult situations. Staff encourages donations of individually wrapped snacks, juice boxes, fruit snacks, and bottled water, which can bring comfort to young clients. Gas cards—with a preference for $10 amounts from Casey's—can be crucial in helping families access therapy and specialized medical care. Everyday essentials such as cleaning supplies, toilet paper, printer paper, and Forever Stamps are also sought, as grants do not cover these needs. Donations must be new and unopened. To coordinate a donation, email jackie@braveheartcac.org or deliver it directly to 292 South East Road in Cambridge. If you're holding a cup of coffee or tea right now, here's a small piece of encouraging news. A large study published in the journal JAMA suggests that people who drink two to three cups of caffeinated coffee or tea a day have about a 15-20 percent lower risk of developing dementia compared to people who avoid these drinks altogether. The researchers analysed data from more than 130,000 men and women followed for up to 43 years as part of two major US health studies. Participants regularly reported what they ate and drank, whether they developed dementia, and how their cognitive abilities changed over time. The people who drank the most caffeinated coffee or tea had an 18 percent lower risk of dementia compared to those who drank little or none. The benefit seemed to plateau at around two to three cups of coffee or one to two cups of tea per day. Decaf coffee showed no clear link to reduced dementia risk. Regular caffeine drinkers also reported slightly less cognitive decline and performed a bit better on some objective brain function tests. Now we have to remember there may be other factors. It's possible that people who drink tea and coffee differ in other ways, maybe they're more socially engaged, more active, or have different sleep patterns. For example, people with poor sleep (which is linked to higher dementia risk) might avoid caffeine which could skew the results. There are plausible biological reasons for the link. Tea and coffee contain caffeine and polyphenols, which may: Improve blood vessel health Reduce inflammation Lower oxidative stress (damage caused by free radicals) Improve metabolic health Caffeine is also associated with lower rates of type 2 diabetes, which is itself a risk factor for dementia. But caffeine isn't purely good. In some people it raises blood pressure, and high blood pressure is a major driver of dementia risk so more isn't better. Experts estimate that up to half of dementia cases worldwide could potentially be prevented or delayed by addressing known risk factors like high blood pressure, smoking, obesity, hearing loss, poor sleep, and lack of exercise. So while your morning coffee might be part of a healthy pattern, it's not a magic shield. The real protective factors are the familiar ones: regular exercise, balanced nutrition, good sleep, social connection, and mental stimulation. If anything, this research offers gentle reassurance. If you enjoy your daily coffee or tea, there's no strong evidence here that you need to give it up for brain health and there may even be a modest benefit. This episode was recorded LIVE at APHRS 2025 in Yokohama, Japan. This episode is recorded entirely in Japanese. The DECAF trial investigated whether continuing regular caffeinated coffee consumption versus complete abstinence affected the recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) or atrial flutter in patients after successful cardioversion. Over six months in this randomized study of 200 adults, those who drank at least one cup of caffeinated coffee daily had a significantly lower rate of AF or flutter recurrence compared to those who abstained (47% vs. 64%), suggesting moderate coffee intake may be safe and potentially beneficial for rhythm stability in this setting.    Learning Objectives Evaluate the impact of caffeinated coffee consumption versus abstinence on atrial fibrillation recurrence following cardioversion. Interpret the design and key outcomes of the DECAF randomized clinical trial and their relevance to clinical practice. Apply the trial findings to patient counseling regarding caffeine intake and atrial fibrillation management.   Article Authors Christopher X. Wong, MBBS, MPH, PhD; Christopher C. Send us a textCoffee and heart rhythm don't have to be enemies. We dig into a new randomized trial across the US, Canada, and Australia suggesting that caffeinated coffee may lower the risk of recurrent atrial fibrillation compared with abstaining, then connect the dots with real-world monitoring, ablation strategy, and day-to-day choices that influence heart health. We start by grounding AFib in plain terms: what it is, why so many people never feel it, and how stroke risk rises when the atria stop driving a steady beat. From there, we step into the electrophysiology lab to explain why trouble often starts near the pulmonary veins and how clinicians map and ablate rogue electrical tissue. Along the way, we highlight the role of wearables like Apple Watch in catching silent arrhythmias and guiding decisions, a shift that is rapidly improving detection and management outside the clinic. Then we unpack the DECAF trial's headline: coffee drinkers showed meaningfully lower recurrence of AFib or flutter over six months versus those who abstained. We explore possible reasons, from caffeine's adenosine receptor antagonism and calcium signaling effects to the antioxidant and mitochondrial support offered by coffee's polyphenols. We also compare with NEJM data in the general population showing no significant increase in ectopy, putting fears into perspective. Finally, we get practical: dosing and timing to protect sleep, what brewing methods change, how dairy proteins can blunt polyphenol absorption, and when unfiltered versus filtered makes sense if you're balancing lipids and antioxidants. If you enjoy coffee and live with AFib, these insights can help you personalize your cup without losing sight of the fundamentals: anticoagulation when indicated, smart rate or rhythm control, and balanced training that avoids chronic overload. If this conversation helps you think differently about caffeine, subscribe, share with someone who cares about heart health, and leave a review so others can find it.For powerpoint slide deck, video recording and reference open-source articles go to: www.thehealthedgepodcast.com

Aaron Glenn met the media and compared the season to Legos. He also said a season is not ‘instant coffee'. In the past Robert Saleh called the NFL an ‘instant coffee' world. The Yankees were shutout in Minnesota, 7-0. The Phillies clinched the NL East. The Moment of The Day: Adam Schein on the Chicago Bears: Amateur hour. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Stefanie: Hyperhydrosis issues here! I've always had sweat profusely pouring from my hands and feet, even as a child. I'm healthy, very in tune with my body, a professional bodyworker myself, and lots of nervous system regulation as well. It's worse when I am very focused, not necessarily nervous. Any ideas on why or how to help resolve this issue?             Lynn: I am very sensitive to caffeine and have been trying to find a good decaf matcha green tea (or another type if that one isn't available). I noticed you had a recommendation for regular matcha in your resource page, but do you have any recommendations for a caffeine-free, organic ceremonial grade matcha? Thank you                                    Lara: Hi, dr. C, hope you're all well..I'm wondering about XXXX ionic foot bath therapy that uses negative ions to get rid of toxins from the body.. it comes with a chart to tell you where your toxins are coming from by the colour of the water.. do you think it actually works? It seems like it would be a great tool if it did what it says it does, but you are my go-to person to ask these things.. thank you and happy healing to everyone !                                               Milan: Dr.Cabral, I am an IHP and have ran OAT, MycoTox and gut microbiom for my client. There was SIBO and SIFO, but no leaky gut and no elevated mold markers. While we have worked on dysbiosis, gut symptoms are all gone. There is one remaining symptom left - fungal patches in the groin and armpit area. Isn't it strange that there are no elevated levels of mold neither at OAT nor at MycoTox test? Can it be really only local on the skin and not systemic? In such case, am I thinking right that local application of Citricidal with coconut oil, colodial silver and tea tree oil should heal skin fungal infection? What could be the cause?                                                                                                                                         Terri: Hi Doc! I've been listening to you for years and love your podcast! Here's a question I haven't heard. About a year ago, my bloodwork showed a high TSH and thankfully, my PCP was on board with me trying an elimination diet and allowing me to test once a month. I immediately eliminated gluten, dairy and soy and within a month my TSH fell into a normal, although not ideal, range. When my TSH was high, I noticed a small bump at the base of my big toe. It disappeared almost completely when my TSH dropped and reappeared when I tried reintroducing dairy and soy into my diet. My TSH also went back up at the same time. Could the bump on my toe be related to the thyroid or is this just coincidence?? It seems to appear and disappear with variations in my TSH. Thanks & keep up the amazing work!             Thank you for tuning into this weekend's Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right! - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/3278 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept?
