Jason Gregor is back with another offseason edition of The DFO Rundown and today, he was joined by Michael Russo of The Athletic. He's spent the last number of years covering the Minnesota Wild but has been working in hockey for a lot longer than that. The guys started the pod off by talking a little bit about Russo's career and how he ended up in ‘The State of Hockey'.From there, they got into the current situation with the Kirill Kaprizov and the Wild. He's eligible for an extension and there's no doubt that the Wild would love to lock him up, but is he open to a max-term contract? Russo gave some insight into that before getting to another contract situation that GM Bill Guerin is currently dealing with in Marco Rossi, who is an RFA.They then talked about how certain offseason moves could change the balance of power in the Central Division. There are some serious question marks around teams like the Jets and Avalanche meanwhile the Stars are going to get a full year out of Mikko Rantanen, which could change things. The Utah Mammoth are also quickly becoming everyones favourite underdog. GM Bill Armstrong had himself a very busy summer, but did he do enough to make them a playoff team? They also talked about Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks and the Nashville Predators chances of bouncing back after a miserable season.Tyler then popped in for Fill in the Blank, where he asked the guys about who will start Game 1 for the Edmonton Oilers, Mitch Marner's ceiling in Vegas, and if they think there could be any surprise teams who get to 100-points.3:50 - Kaprizov & a short-term deal9:50 - Will Marco Rossi in Minnesota?15:05 - The Central offseason20:25 - Everyone loves Utah24:05 - Can the Hawks take a step?28:40 - Can the Preds rebound?33:10 - Fill in the BlankWant to hear more from Jason and the entire DFO team? The guys started today's podcast by talking about one team that they think really improved themselves this summer: the Montreal Canadiens. Are they good enough to be a team that wins playoff rounds next year? They discussed it.From there, they talked about the moves that the Anaheim Ducks made so far this summer. They brought in some veterans in Chris Krieder and Mikael Granlund and while they moved on from Trevor Zegras, it's easy to see a path to the Ducks improving. They then talked about the Mitch Marner saga and him officially becoming a member of the Vegas Golden Knights. Should Vegas be considered the favourites in the West? They also touched on the way the Maple Leafs handled the situation and the Florida Panthers finding a way to keep all their free agents around.Tyler then popped in for Buy or Sell where he asked about the Ken Holland's moves with the Kings, the bottom-five teams in the league and the remaining free agents on the board. They wrapped up the show by talking about James Reimer and some of the names still out on the market, the impact some of the new Head Coaches around the league could have and the state of the Dallas Stars after the hiring of Glen Gulutzan.1:10 - How much better are the Habs?8:30 - Are the Ducks good enough?15:40 - Marner & the Golden Knights23:00 - The Leafs rebound27:30 - Bennett & the Panthers33:10 - Buy or Sell50:00 - The new coaches52:00 - Stars hire GulutzanWant to hear more from Jason and the entire DFO team? The DFO Rundown is back and with draft weekend in the rear view mirror and free agency opening up tomorrow, there was no shortage of talking points for Jason Gregor. He began the show by going through a little bit of what we saw over the last 72 hours in the league from the Islanders picking first overall to some of the big extensions that were signed.Jason was then joined by guest co-host Chris Pronger. The Hall of Fame defenseman talked about the end of his career when he was trying to overcome an eye injury and life after hockey, including his stint with the Florida Panthers organization. The guys then got into free agency. Teams finally have some money to spend and that could result in some pretty shocking contracts. They talked about what smart teams will do with their money and they also talked about some of the big free agents on the board, like Mitch Marner, who is rumoured to be heading to the Vegas Golden Knights.Jason also got Chris' take on this years crop of free agent defensemen. Provorov, Ekblad, and Gavrikov are all coming from very different situations but teams are always hungry for defensemen this time of year. Could one of those three get a bigger contract than we think? Pronger also talked about how going to a different system could expose some flaws in their games.Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about who could increase their Stanley Cup odds the most in the next week, the New York Islanders big weekend and they shared their favourite under the radar free agent options.1:00 - Draft weekend recap13:50 - Chris Pronger on life after hockey26:10 - Best on Best hockey22:50 - Mitch Marner's future39:55 - Free Agent Defensemen41:00 - Fill in the Blank50:00 - Under the radar optionsWant to hear more from Jason and the entire DFO team? Should GM Mike Grier spend like crazy? Or stay the course? The guys debated that. They then had a similar conversation about the Chicago Blackhawks. The Nashville Predators were one of the more disappointing teams in the NHL this year and now, they'll try to get things back on the rails. That could involve trading one of the players they signed last summer. The Seattle Kraken have some contracts that Frank thinks they need to move and probably won't be buyers.Speaking of buyers, that's the expectation in both Anaheim and Utah. Both Frank and Jason agreed that those two teams should be very aggressive this summer. They then went up to Canada to talk about the Vancouver Canucks, who are trying to turn over a new leaf after a drama filled 2024-25 season and have some clear holes on their roster. The Calgary Flames were one of the more positive surprises in the NHL and instead of heading towards a rebuild, GM Craig Conroy could try to add to this group and try make them a legit playoff team.Tyler then popped on for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about Sam Bennett's Conn Smythe chances and the rumblings about NHL expansion. They wrapped up the show with some Stanley Cup Final talk as the Panthers have the Oilers on the brink of elimination for a second consecutive season. With Frank Seravalli away for the week, Jason Gregor was joined by Daily Faceoff Prospect analyst Steven Ellis for today's episode of The DFO Rundown. There was a lot of Jason to get to with Steven, who is one of the best prospect analysts in the game, as over the last two weeks, we've seen a handful of big-name prospects make the jump from college and junior to the NHL.They kicked off the pod by talking about the New York Rangers handling of Gabe Perreault, who left college but has been sitting in the press box for his first few games with the Rangers. They also talked about what the Flames could do with Zayne Parekh, who could make his debut before the end of the season. They also touched on the Chicago Blackhawks' next wave of young talent, whether or not Zeev Buium will play in the playoffs with the Minnesota Wild, and how much of an impact Jimmy Snuggerud could have with the Blues. The biggest news of the week though came from Montreal as the Canadiens announced that 19-year-old Ivan Demidov, the 5th overall pick from the 2024 draft, will be coming over from the KHL to join the team for their playoff run. Steven talked about his potential to be a true superstar and whether or not he can make an immediate impact with the club.Tyler then joined for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about a handful of teams who have been officially eliminated from the playoffs, the first confirmed playoff matchup, and whose stock Steven is buying ahead of the 2025 draft. To wrap, they talked about the insane season that Gavin McKenna is having with Medicine Hat and where he could end up next season.2:45 - The playoff picture4:00 - The Rangers' handling of Gabe Perreault6:20 - The Flames with Parekh & Suniev14:05 - Blackhawks' next wave of talent18:05 - The Wild & Buium21:00 - Demidov comes to Montreal24:10 - Blues & Snuggerud27:25 - European free agents33:30 - Buy or Sell43:30 - Gavin McKennaWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? There's nothing quite like a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio to wrap up your Tuesday and keep you up to date on all things Edmonton Oilers. We kicked off the Tuesday episode of the podcast with a delicious debate about the team's lack of response to Radko Gudas' dirty headshot on Corey Perry. Given that the team responded relatively lightly to doing nothing after the play, the guys wondered whether or not more should have been done in the moment or afterward. Another angle on the story is how the refs completely lost the plot in Monday's game, and their performance so poorly only contributed to the chaos on the ice. Changing gears, we looked at the last two games the Oilers lost and tried to figure out what went wrong at the end of the road trip. Yes, it's a massive problem that McDavid and Draisaitl are not in the lineup, but the struggle to get goals in the net is a problem the team can't seem to solve. We also touched on Olivier Rodrigue's first NHL start and how it was a big moment for the second-round pick from 2018, even though he didn't get the desired result. The guys also reviewed the latest injury updates for the roster and discussed how it's more important for the team to get healthy than to rush people back. According to Jason Gregor, Stuart Skinner may be the first man back after he started practicing with the team and is targeting coming back this week. Without the team practicing on Tuesday, we don't know the status of the other injured players, so the boys took their best guesses for who would come back first. Finally, the boys wrapped up the podcast with a discussion about Alex Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky's goal record, and how it was pretty fun to see one of the most untouchable records get broken. We also ran through some betting talk for our friends at bet365 that looked at the Oilers' Cup futures as well as Leon Draisaitl's chances to win the Hart Trophy before wrapping up the pod with keys to victory and a score prediction against the Blues. Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli did a special LIVE Trade Deadline preview to get ready for what should be a wild 24 hours around the NHL. As we approach deadline day, there is a new number one on Frank's Trade Targets board as Mikko Rantanen has rocketed up the board. Where could he land? Will the Hurricanes even move him? The guys gave their takes. From there, they talked about what the New Jersey Devils could do now that they'll be without Jack Hughes for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs. Some thought it could lead to them being sellers, but Frank threw cold water on that idea. They also talked about the series of trades we saw yesterday which included the Tampa Bay Lightning making another massive splash and the Pittsburgh Penguins making a puzzling trade with the Nashville Predators. Could Pittsburgh flip the assets that they got?Tyler then popped on for a special edition of Fill in the Blank that was fueled solely by questions from the live chat. They talked about a potential deal between the Avs and Flames, what the Blue Jackets could get up to, and the chances of Brock Nelson heading to Winnipeg. To wrap, they went through some Western Conference teams that could make some noise in the next 24 hours. What could teams like the Oilers and Wild get up to?
