Welcome to Part 2 of a two-part colorectal cancer (CRC) awareness series featuring guest Trevor Maxwell, Founder and CEO of Man Up to Cancer, a non-profit that inspires men to connect and avoid isolation during their cancer journeys. Trevor shares what he's learned since being diagnosed with stage 4 CRC six years ago, the darkness he faced from mental health struggles and how he ultimately decided to Man Up to Cancer himself.Precision medicine (i.e. “personalized” medicine) is predicated on the idea that treating the whole person leads to better outcomes. Trevor's story is evidence as host Karan Cushman takes listeners through his journey with cancer beginning with the less-than-obvious signs that led to his diagnosis at age 41.As husband to his wife, Sarah, and father to two young daughters, Sage and Elsie, Trevor now realizes he has a lot to live for, but in the initial months after he was diagnosed he couldn't see beyond the devasting news. He says he felt like an outlier—as if all other men with cancer were somehow shouldering the burden without help while he struggled. He later realized that many, many men felt the same way he did, and they were less likely to be accessing support resources than women. Trevor says, “I just realized that something needed to be done for those guys like me who maybe don't want to participate in a co-ed environment, and maybe if we give them something, maybe if we build something for them where it's by men going through cancer, for men going through cancer, maybe they'll open up.” This realization led Trevor to launch Man Up to Cancer. He says, “People who isolate going through cancer have worse medical outcomes, number one, and worse problems with mental health.” He created his non-profit to address those issues head on.Trevor notes that treating the whole person, not just the cancer, can save lives, but men first need to learn to ask for help. This whole-person approach is very much in line with the idea behind precision medicine today in that understanding ourselves and how we operate can optimize our treatment paths. As Trevor says, “For me, mental health was just as important as my physical health going through this [colorectal cancer]. For so many others, it's the same.” If you're living with cancer or supporting someone through their journey with cancer, please tune in to Part 2 of our incredibly candid and insightful conversation with Trevor. Not only is he truly inspiring, but he underscores how cancer patients reaching out to their communities and asking for support can sometimes literally be a matter of life or death. And don't miss the other episodes in our CRC awareness series, which includes Part 1 with Trevor in which he discusses the critical need for better screening for CRC as well as our broader discussion with Dr. Douglas Flora, Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services at St. Elizabeth Healthcare and Editor-in-Chief of AI and Precision Oncology.Download the full transcript of the episode here (pdf).Like what you hear? Today, 80% of adults younger than 60 are not being effectively screened for colorectal cancer. They now have a 50% greater chance of being diagnosed than they did in the 90s. Additionally, the rise of early-onset CRC—even in otherwise healthy young people in their 20s and 30s—is unprecedented. This marks the 60th episode of the Precision Medicine Podcast as host Karan Cushman begins a two-part series focused on colorectal cancer with Trevor Maxwell, Founder and CEO of Man Up to Cancer. Trevor was diagnosed with CRC at age 41 and attests that it feels like we are back in the early days of breast cancer in terms of building awareness around the criticality of basic screening, yet the statistics are startling. In this Part 1, Trevor helps us understand the facts and current trends behind the second-leading cause of death for both men and women in America today. Trevor says the numbers are alarming, noting a 1% to 3% increase in the young-onset cohort every year. The big question, he says, is “why?”.

Trevor Maxwell was diagnosed with Stage IV colorectal cancer in March 2018. During his treatment journey he was dismayed to learn that support services specifically geared to men are sorely lacking, so he set out to change that. In 2019, he launched Man Up to Cancer, an organization that encourages men facing all forms of cancer to avoid isolation and connect with each other. Men find connection in The Howling Place, a private Facebook group, in 40-plus chapters across North America and around the world, and at an annual retreat called the Gathering of Wolves. MUTC also offers chemo backpacks to men undergoing chemotherapy, and is piloting men-only support groups at five cancer centers in 2024. The organization achieved non-profit status in November 2023 to continue its efforts to reach even more men who are not on social media, and to continue to provide all services at no cost. Further Together host Michael Holtz, a 12-year survivor of stage IIIB rectal cancer, is a member of the MUTC board of directors and recently recommended an ORAU-Directed Research and Development project to study the importance of peer-to-peer support for men facing cancer as part of his white paper, "Meeting the Moment: Aligning ORAU capabilities with the federal government's priorities to end cancer as we know it." Holtz and Maxwell discuss all things MUTC, the importance of peer-to-peer connection for men's mental and physical health, and how research will play a key role in reaching even more men in the future. What does it mean to use tragic circumstances as a means to serve others?   How can men take the fear, uncertainty, and vulnerability that often accompany their darkest moments and turn it into a chance to connect with others and free themselves of the social stigma surrounding men and being vulnerable? Beyond this, what does it look like to create an environment where men can be vulnerable and open without fear of criticism or judgment? Shawn Nason speaks with Trevor Maxwell on today's episode to discuss his journey as a cancer survivor, what it was like to overcome his darkest moments, the mental health component that often goes unnoticed in illnesses like cancer, and how he used his cancer battle as a springboard to set an example and serve others in a similar struggle. In This Episode (2:21) What Trevor does at Man Up To Cancer and why he does it (6:00) How healthcare organizations could better meet the needs of men with cancer and other serious illnesses (7:35) Understanding how cultural conditioning influences the needs of men vs. women  (9:14) Oftentimes, men don't have the available resources to have their emotional needs met (12:18) Why Trevor created The Howling Place (15:34) How Trevor's background helped him write his book, Open Heart, Warrior Spirit. (18:26) Finding your people: using social media to build a community (21:28) Trevor on his “Shawshank Moment” (25:41) What healthcare professionals need to know to help patients (27:15) Trevor's advice for people who want to turn their life experiences into something that serves the world (29:35) The Combustion Questions What We Learned From Trevor Men are culturally conditioned to see asking for help as a sign of weakness, so even in cases such as a cancer diagnosis, men are more prone to isolate and “tough it out” than women. There is a gap in healthcare organizations, leaving the mental health component often undervalued despite the heavy emotional burden that accompanies illnesses like cancer. Men crave a space that allows them to share struggles with other men who understand their struggles and can offer support and understanding. The best time to start turning your life experiences into something that serves the world is right now - start where you are. Notable Quotes [4:41] “The cancer world needs guys who are going to step up, be honest about it, start talking about it.” [7:10] “A lot of us have been conditioned to think that if we ask for help, that that is weakness.” [20:33] “I needed to connect with others who were around the same age, you know, raising kids, going through the same challenge, like to know that I wasn't alone.” [27:02] “If we're gonna enter this era of precision medicine, we need to do it so that everyone gets on the train.” Our Guest Trevor Maxwell is the owner of Maxwell Media and PR, which is a media/public relations consulting firm. He is also an author and founder of Man Up To Cancer, a purpose-driven company that sets out to inspire men to forge connections and avoid isolation when battling cancer.  With a background in consulting, writing, journalism, public relations, and being a survivor of stage 4 colon cancer, his focus is changing what the phrase “man up” means in the context of fighting cancer. He believes men are stronger as a pack than flying solo as a lone wolf. After surviving his cancer experience, Joe felt called to encourage other men to connect with others and seek support via the creation of a growing Facebook community. Joe also now is organizing support for pediatric cancer patients and their families. Episode Host: Bruce WatkinsA Father, Cancer survivor, podcaster, writer & content creator, speaker, voice-over artist, facilitator/moderator, traveler, cultural explorer, humanitarian, giving-back & minimalist evangelist, music enthusiast, former Corporate people leader, and curious soul who transformed into an unapologetically optimistic and unpretentious advocate of Life-Optimization for all. After surviving Cancer and other life-changing experiences in 2017, Bruce gave away most of his possessions, left his home behind and began traveling, writing, volunteering, and giving-back. Randall Broad welcomes Trevor Maxwell, founder of Man Up to Cancer. Man Up to Cancer inspires men to connect and avoid isolation during our cancer journeys. Founded in 2020 by stage IV colon cancer patient Trevor Maxwell, Man Up to Cancer is a digital content company and online community. They offer a podcast, website, social media channels, and an insanely engaged Facebook group called, 'The Howling Place'. When faced with cancer, women tend to, “reach out,” and men tend to, “check out.” This tendency toward isolation leads men down the path toward mental health problems, strained relationships, and poor medical outcomes. Man up to Cancer presents a new path. We are changing what it means to “Man Up” in the face of cancer. It's not just about being tough. It means having the courage to accept help, knowing we are smarter, and stronger as a pack than we are as lone wolves.
